It turns that even a witch can't run from her past forever. A lesson I learned the hard way. But now I'm back home, and things are going well. Or they were for about five minutes. With the town-saving fall festival days away, the inn's renovation have fallen apart, running me ragged and right into a crime scene. A suspicious death has sent gossip flying faster than you can say bibidi babidi boo, threatening to put Silverlake on the map for all the wrong reasons . It'll take all witches on deck to solve this crime and save Silverlake before it's too late.
I'm a mystery author with a soft spot for romance and humor, too. I love all things girlie with a dollop of danger, have a strong affinity for the color pink (especially in diamonds and champagne), and, not to brag, but chocolate and I are in a pretty serious relationship.
My books are fun and flirty, and feature smart and sassy sleuths. If you love books with a dash of spice and twist of whodunit, you're going to love my work!
Our protagonist, Angelica who is a witch in a supernatural town, is tasked with so many things to do at once it stresses her. But, with the Inn she helps her aunt Thelma run going through renovations while the Fall Festival is coming up and she serves on the committee she gets a little stressed out. And with so many things going wrong with the renovation will the Inn be able to open on time? Will she have to call all the reservations and cancel? Aunt Thelma keeps trying to tell her to keep calm it will all work out. Then when Aunt Thelma's long time friend, Sophia, comes early to the Inn, Angelica finds there is something off about the woman. But she can't say anything to her Aunt who seems totally fixated with her friend. When Sofia is found dead, Angelica takes it upon herself to find the murderer before everything falls apart! With her friend Vance, she sets out to find the murderer and hopefully save the the festival from bad press as well as save the Inn. But with so much on her plate and a lot of twists and turns and red-herrings can she do it or will it do her and the Inn in? Great promising series and I look forward to reading the next adventure with Angelica, Aunt Thelma and Vance. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
So in my last review, I wasn't sure if I had just missed the Fall Festival or not, so I decided to continue to book two - yes I could have read the blurb to find out my answer, no I didn't, let's just continue.
So we picked up closer to the Fall Festival that was created and started to be planned in the first book. I was so glad that we hadn't missed the Fall Festival because I was really excited to hopefully see the Festival and what they did with it.
While the preparations are in full swing, the renovations on the inn aren't going so well as they try to ensure that the inn is ready for all the incoming guests who will be attending this festival and of course need somewhere to lay their head at night.
It seems like the renovations will be the biggest issues but of course, when a popular witch ends up dead, the focus changes to find out whodunit as gossip flies faster than the actual police work.
I'm still not sure where I land on this series. The world is interesting, I'm curious what could be done with it. But there are still things I'm not entirely sure I'm loving. I get having past biases against people, but the fact that Amber, miss that's Deputy to you, is quick to pin shit on Angelica with no reason or evidence is getting old already and we're only in book two. It makes no sense, even in a cute, cozy mystery world, that someone who holds that much responsibility doesn't even actually look at the evidence. I get nepotism, but at the same time there's no way she'd end up as deputy if she were this shitty at her job.
I also get for cozy mysteries we need some suspension of disbelief that our MC can solve the mystery, the whodunit before the cops in most cases, or at least about the same time while assisting. But to have the police force feel so inept at their job is kind of crazy.
I'm still hoping maybe this series will get better. I also just want to see this Fall Festival, so I guess I'll give book three a trie.
ngelica is stressing over the rehab of the inn and everything going wrong. They don't have much time to get everything together for the festival. Thelma's friend Sophia is early and wanting to stay there. Angelica doesn't like Sophia, something about her is off. Angelica is meeting her friend for a run when she sees a something in the lake. Angelica realizes who it is. Sophia is dead and this will bring the wrong attention to the town. Angelica and Vance will work to find out who is behind the murder. They realize just who Sophia was, they keep finding people that she had wronged.
This book was so much fun to read. You will be pulling to the mystery of the murder and everything else Angelica is dealing with. You will be so surprised by who did and what happens. The author pulls you into the world and you will not want to leave. I love the characters of the book, each brings something interesting to the series. Looking forward to see where her relationship will go with Vance. Really can't wait for the next adventure in this series.
Just barely 3 stars from me, my standard for a read that I enjoyed mostly. To be honest, the second book curse had also befallen this one. Not quite as good and charming as the first with the novelty of cast and world lost, there being hardly anything new added to the world. I had hoped to learn more of this magic world in this second book and while there was a bit here and there, it didn’t feel like enough for me. And Angelica still debated with some of the same issues as in the first one. There was some growth though, so I have hope yet that it won’t be the same cycle in every book. I honestly don’t know why some authors feel the need to repeat the same circle of uncertainty, fears and newfound knowledge/discovery/confidence in each book … The main reason why I gave three stars after all was because the cast and world is still nice and mostly because I once again had a moment of loss and utter blankness about who the murderer was. That doesn’t happen often to me in cozies and it is after all a mystery novel at its core. So kudos and a star for that.
Our heroine is settling in back at her home town, but that goes a bit awry when another body shows up. Better solve this one quickly before things get out of hand.
This is book two of the series. It is written as a standalone, so feel free to start here.
This is an urban fantasy story with a witch as our heroine, but there is a lot more going on than that. The story is well written and easy to read with well developed characters and setting. We get to explore some more in this book as well as meeting new characters, which is always fun. The mystery is also a good one which will keep you engaged as you follow the various twists in the investigation. Overall, another fun mystery and I look forward to more in this series.
Highly recommended.
I received an ARC from the author for review purposes.
Angelica is getting more comfortable and beginning to embrace being a witch. She’s settling into being back home and is happy that she’s where she’s meant to be. The renovations at the inn aren’t going as quickly or as smoothly as she’d like and with the fall festival only days away she’s really feeling stressed and doesn’t need one more thing on her plate. Unfortunately there just isn’t a good time to schedule when you’re going to stumble over a dead body. The festival doesn’t need the kind of negative publicity a murder will bring - Angie and Vance are in a race against time to get it solved.
This is an entertaining series. There are enough twists and turns to hold your interest and keep you guessing. The books can be read as stand-alones, but I think it’s always more enjoyable to read a series from the beginning.
Eerie Check in is Book 2 in the Mystic Inn Mystery Series. I am really enjoying this series. This book can be read as a stand alone, but definitely check out the first book in the series.
Its almost time for the fall festival and things are going well for Angelica. Now that she has stopped running from her past and settling back into Silverlake, things seem calm , well for a minute.
There is a dead body, of course and Angelica and her crew need to solve the murder before the fall festival, which is set to save the town financially.
This is a fantastic twisty mystery with great characters and a wonderful witchy setting.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series.
More trouble than things going right, but . . . Angelica WILL get to the bottom of it!
Entry two into this series is a well-written, intriguing mystery. D'Amore's characters are well-drawn, engaging people, of the sort I'd like to know in real life too! As she struggles to get her in ready with a seemingly impossible timeline, she not only deals with an early check-in, but that guest's untimely murder. Can she resolve the mystery - and her renovation woes - in time?
A not-to-be-missed page-turner, you will thoroughly enjoy Errie Check-In!
[I was fortunate to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author, with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed herein are given freely and are entirely my own.]
Silverlake's Fall Festival is on the verge of opening and Mystic Inn is still under renovations. Nevertheless, when Aunt Thelma's best friend arrives, Angelica manages to find a room for her and her husband. Things become complicated when she's found floating (dead) in the lake and he's taken in for questioning. Angelica needs to find the killer to do right by her aunt's old school friend.
I read this back to back with the first Mystic Inn book and it was a pleasant surprise to find how the characters had flourished. This time around, I found everyone to be much more sympathetic and I actually rooted for Angelica to find the killer. Despite a number of malapropisms, I quite enjoyed the story. I'm still not fussed with the ghost, though.
Setting the Scene: Angelica (a/k/a Angela, Angie) has returned to Silverlake, recaptured her magic, and is now in the midst of revitalizing the town and organizing a Fall festival. When a famous former citizen of Silverlake returns for the festivities, things get a little strained, and when a body is discovered, Angelica must figure out what happened before all the publicity they wanted becomes publicity they do not.
What I Thought: This was another fun read in this gem of a cozy paranormal series. As my review of the first in the series stated, tropes abound, but it is a true cozy read. So, get comfortable and enjoy.
The narrator does a good job of voicing the characters and capturing the spirit of the book.
Angelica's idea of a festival to revitalize Silverlake was taking shape, but would Aunt Thelma's renovation of Mystic Inn, plagued with mishaps and delayed deliveries, be ready in time for festival guests. When her aunt"s friend Sophia arrives early, things really go wrong. Angelica finds Sophie's body in the lake, and she and Vance start looking into her death. In a series of false leads, suspects running away, an apparent suicide with a confession note, and a deputy sheriff who would like nothing better than to lock Angelica up, Angelica and Vance are in for an exhausting adventure.
Tricky Paranormal Cozy Mystery This cozy, paranormal mystery is the second book in its series. I think a reader would not be lost if the books were read out of order. But, as usual, the reader would enjoy the series much more if the books were read in order. The series has the somewhat tired trope of a 'new' witch who is really inept at her craft. The plot, however, is really good. This one is a really powerful murder mystery with some great twists. It will keep the reader's interest until the final reveal!
Wow, some might say Karma or Murphy's Law. But your past is always lurking around the corner, waiting for the opertunity, to bite your on your hiney-bo. At the worst possible time. You have to eat that big hunk of crow you kept putting off, denial just ingoring, hoping it has really gone away. But as they say the Devil and the pipper always collect their dues. I enjoyed this you can almost feel the cringe your self. Who doest have the episode in the past, you want to stay in the closet? Cant wait for the next book!
In this second installation of the series, Angelica has talked her aunt into renovating the inn. Like any home improvement, there are many glitches and it looks doubtful that it will be complete in time for the town festival. When a local celebrity comes back to town for the event, it should generate plenty of press and positivity for the town. Right? There’s plenty of mystery surrounding a murder of one of the inn’s guests and Angelica works with her friends to solve it. This is a great series for the reader who wants to be intrigued and entertained.
An good background listening cozy, but nothing special so far. The magic system has similarities to the one found in That TERF's books like dragonheart wand cores and transfiguration. The magic system is more of the hand wavey feel-good kind than one that seems like it's been built stringently. I wish that the author hadn't felt the need to mention the MC's pastry eating and need to exercise more because of it 🫠 So sick of cozy mystery protagonists always worrying about their weight. Maybe it's realisric, but it shouldn't be, and only detracts from the story, imo.
I’m loving this series! The fall festival is imminent and the inn is not ready for guests. Toss in a murder and Angelica has her hands more than full. The plot has many twists and will keep you guessing until the end. The book is expertly crafted and I like the new characters. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
Eerie Check In is a well written, entertaining mystery. I am really enjoying this series. Angelica is extremely busy. It is about one week until the fall festival; the inn's renovations are behind schedule and encountering issues, and the inn's early registering guest is now dead. What is an innkeeper to do? Solve the mystery, of course. The book is well written, the plot is convoluted and it will keep you well entertained. I could not put it down!
Angelica and Lance are the perfect mystery solving duo in a delightful town full of unexpected surprises. The town is full of wonderful characters and you never know what kind of magical abilities will pop into play. The mystery had plenty of twists and suspects that kept me guessing right to the end. I love how the town folk stick together to help each other and the town. I really enjoy this series and looking forward to the next adventure.
I thoroughly enjoyed the second book in this series! A light entertaining read that kept me reading for more. I love how Angelica is embracing Silverlake and her magic more :)
I was hoping for the ending to include more of the fall festival itself so it seemed to end a bit too quickly for me. However I already preordered the next book and can’t wait to read it! I hope the series continues on after the next book too! Keep up the good work!!
This is a whodunnit involving the murder of a Martha Stewart-like witch. It is a solid cozy mystery, and it was no problem to dive into the series at book #2 (which I got free). I enjoyed it, but it didn't grab me enough to continue with the series or author. I am a little tempted by her entry in the "Funeral Fakers" series (about a down-on-her-luck actress who is hired to be a mourner at various funerals).
With Angelica dragging her Aunt's inn into the present while also trying to organize the Harvest festival for the town. A famous witch and her husband check into the inn at her aunts insistence. Even though the inn is not quite ready. Angelica finds one of the new guests body in the lake. Now she needs to find out what happened before the struggling inn is shut down permanently.
Pro's: Developed characters, a good plotline, and some humor.
A town that is openly magical but only to those who can sense magic. However, the main character, Angelica is not very good at practicing magic. Don't worry, this does not detract from the story, her use of magic does provide a few light moments. There is the added feature of the re-igniting of the old flames of the attraction between
It was fine. I enjoyed it. It was some light summerish reading, nothing difficult.
I do wish the author had an editor to make sure she was using vile/vial correctly. Sometimes in one paragraph, we'd get both words when we really only needed vial.
A bit of a minor quibble in an otherwise enjoyable story.
As I didn’t start at the first book, I felt I couldn’t get a proper feel for the characters. Having said that I reckon if I’d read the first book I would not have read anymore anyway. It’s very cheesy, written simplistically and doesn’t have any depth of characters at all. They could have been cardboard cutouts. Although it is clean in everyway.
A magical town populated with witches, shifters, ghosts and the odd poltergeist and I do mean odd, stir-in mayhem murders and a maybe romance and you have this entertaining read. Well written with great characters with a complex storyline to keep you turning pages, and a twist that you won't see coming, well worth a read, Baz.
I am sort of quoting the author here: If you love books with a dash of romance and heavy on the mystery, you will love this series. That is exactly what I love. I like a little romance mixed throughout an awesome cozy mystery. And that is what I just read. I like that there are lots of suspects and real sleuthing. No hurried endings here. Great book.
A lovely cozy that anyone 8-80 could easily read! No language, violence or sex - so read on! In Silverlake there are potions, wands, people who transform- need I say more. All your witchy dreams come alive. There is even a little murder and mystery to keep things lively.
Now that Angelica has returned home to Silverlake and has accepted the fact that she is a witch, it’s time to get to work. Helping her aunt renovate the inn and get the town ready for the Fall Festival should be enough to keep busy but when a dead body turns up Angelica finds herself with one more thing on her plate… solving a murder.
