Nagatoro is a cute freshman in high school who loves to toy with her senior classmate (Senpai). Even though Nagatoro tricks Senpai, makes him cry, and teases him, the two of them are hardly ever apart. Do the two of them really like each other as friends? Or are they toying with the idea that they can be something more?? Find out in this rowdy romantic comedy!
Hooray! It's the return of my favorite dysfunctional manga duo: Senpai and Nagatoro. Same warnings apply to this volume as all volumes; if you're disturbed by depictions of bullying stay far, far away from this series. While later volumes are nowhere near as mean spirited as that first one… well, the series is built on a joke and it's not going to abandon it six volumes in.
We ended last volume on a bit of a cliffhanger. Given that the series has been mostly plotless, with just random scenes in the lives of our characters, I figured this volume would continue directly off the ending of the last one, and then we'd get back to normal.
I was wrong.
This entire volume is one story arc. For a series that didn't really have a true plotline for the first five volumes, it's a little bizarre to see this. Keeping to classic manga tropes, it is of course a school festival, but I did not call it lasting for an entire volume.
I have mixed feelings on this development. On one hand I think it really demonstrates how much these characters have changed, as we no longer have to follow the formula set in previous volumes, and how these characters are able to stand with an actual plot and not just a gag-per chapter. I also concede that there are some extremely funny chapters.
My biggest problem is that the actual plotline wasn't that great. Obviously this is an opinion based thing, but I can't really say that I was that invested. It was pretty much a standard "we have a competition and if we fail we need to close our club" story and for a series that has consistently surprised me, it was a bit disappointing that we were going this path with our first big story. Had it been a shorter one I think it would have looked better, instead it takes the entire book.
In the end, complains aside, it's another entertaining volume. Though far from the best the series has to offer, I'm still always delighted to get more of this horribly mean spirited little comedy. 3/5 stars
With the Art Club turned into a hangout for Nagatoro and her crew, Senpai has to throw down with the club president to save it from being disbanded. A popularity contest during the school festival between an art goddess and the cripplingly unpopular Senpai might seem doomed to failure, but...
I think this series has officially broken my ability to look at it objectively because it is dumb and ridiculously service-y this volume and I still enjoyed the heck out of it. It’s just a romp from start to finish, using the series’ first real go at long-form storytelling to excellent advantage.
The Art Club president is a total lunatic who seems to be no less than a raging narcissist whose inspiration is her own body. It’s one of the wildest takes on the pretentious artist type that I’ve seen and even if it isn’t intentionally so, it keeps going to such insane lengths that it becomes hilarious (you cannot tell me that the use of the word arsenal wasn’t done intentionally).
With a wanton exhibitionist continually escalating her attacks over the volume (the way this part plays out is actually fairly clever), there’s a ton for the entire group to do. The secret plan the girls come up with to win the day is actually more nuanced than you might have expected, even if it boils down to the same idea.
This dynamic between Senpai and the others has been shifting constantly and that character development pays off here. Nagatoro and Senpai are even more clearly into one another at this point and the brief slips they make are actually really cute.
The jealousy of Nagatoro is funny enough, but paired with how she very obviously switches back to teasing Senpai when things start to get too serious as a defence mechanism? Well, we’re a long way from the first volume.
It all feels like a well done screwball comedy. Our scheming gyaru has one particularly hysterical appearance that has spot on comedic timing, which is not easy for a book to pull off. The overly busty president just happens to have her hands under her assets like 90% of the time. It all holds together so well and does it with more heart than you’d think.
It’s certainly not perfect - if you’re in the market for something that is not layered in boob jokes then this is not going to do anything for you, but much as I’m not the biggest guy for fan service, this one really won me over even with how over the top it goes. Just know what you’re in for.
3.5 stars. I’m certainly not giving something this incredibly goofy the privilege of rounding up to 4, but it is one of the silliest, most enjoyable volumes of this series yet and shows that a long story arc can work with these characters just fine.
TLDR: It's good. A tad cliche, and less harsh than the previous volumes, but it feels like a natural progression for the characters. I liked it.
Longer Review: If for some sadistic reason you really enjoyed when Nagatoro crossed the line and began bullying Senpai, then you may not like this volume. It keeps it a lot more in check. I feel like this volume does a really good job at strengthening the relationship between our two main characters, and overall makes the main characters all much more likeable. The volume is an enjoyable read, much more than previous novels, probably my favorite so far. If you were iffy on the series, this could probably make you feel better about the series.
It's a book-length adventure as Nagatoro tries to help her victim/crush beat the art club president in an art exhibition at the school cultural festival. If he loses, the art club will be disbanded!
Fan service and boob jokes abound as the art club president is extremely well-endowed.
But this series is really about Nagatoro's many and rapidly changing facial expressions and the slow but obvious tidal change of the emotions flowing between her and her senpai. Sweet and perverse, like the guilty pleasure it is.
Absolutely some of the best character development seen in the series so far. We finally get to see for a fact that the two main characters actually care about each other at the same time a misunderstanding puts it all in jeopardy. I really enjoyed Nagatoros friend group in this volume as well. They never seemed to actually like senpai in my opinion but then all of a sudden they're considering him a friend and hatching schemes to help him overall a fantastic volume.

Nice Arc, Senpai telling Nagatoro compliments might be the best thing to ever exist. The exhibition was pretty cute. The Art prez thing was so unexpected but very funny.
Once again, another great volume by Nanashi covering this unusual High School romance. As usual, I read it all in one sitting. The main focus is an artists' duel between our Senpai, teamed up with Nagatoro, against the Art Club President. Madame President is very avant garde and specializes in semi-nude self-portraits and consistently wins top honors. Senpai has to find an unconventional approach to win...and paints multiple "slice of life" paintings of Nagatoro. Hijinks ensue. The Art Club President acknowledges Senpai's skill & passion and says out loud what these two so far cannot....these paintings above all contain "Love"....a pronouncement that leaves Senpai & Nagatoro visibly impacted and nervous to acknowledge that truth. All throughout this volume we can see Nagatoro's insecurities and her jealousy over her Senpai whom she refuses to share. She always deflects overt acknowledgements of her feelings with a wisecrack or a joke...but everyone else can see what's going on and people are starting to talk. Nagatoro is even willing to face down the Art Club President, despite being a sophomore and Madame President a Senior. (Japanese High Schools only have 3 grades...9th graders are lumped in with Middle School students). I look forward to the next volume and to the anime adaptation coming out in Spring 2021.

As the school festival draws near while Senpai is struggling to find a way to keep the art club from being disbanded by the stoic-but-gorgeous school prez, Nagatoro and her cunning cohorts come up with a purr-fect idea to save it and gain attention during the festival. We get two bonus chapters of him and the two girls in a funny modeling session. A- (91%/Excellent)
Sticking to the formula that’s worked so far. Jealous Nagataro is easily the best emotion in the story and really hints at her true feelings about Senpai.
Ah a school festival storyline. The culmination of character's efforts and preperation. This time it allows Nagatoro and Senpai to showcase their skills to ensure the art club stays open. It's entertaining to watch.
Arriva la competizione d'arte. Questa parte di storia l'ho trovata molto intrigante. Il nostro sempai si mette in gioco con parecchia passione e la modella è... Nagatoro. La presidentessa del club è un osso duro. Davvero una bella sfida.
The more I continue reading the more those cute moments occur along with seeing how jealous they both actually are but can't admit it Then there is what looks like a new rival, very intriguing
I think after 6 volumes this series started to sound recycled and I was wanting something new or some kind of forward movement with Nagatoro and Senpai's story/relationship.
3.5 for this volume. It’s really entertaining and keeps the cute vibe. I liked this little arc with the club president and I’m interested to see where it goes.
