Oh my heart. So much happened in this book and I'm still reeling from the impact of it all. I highlighted so many beautiful quotes, took note of telling plot points...but I'm currently in my feels processing. SO I'll get back you you all with my review...
...for now all I can say is. READ THIS SERIES. It will hurt your heart but I KNOW my heart is still better off, having read it...thus far. I'm going to have to build a small fortress around my heart and have augments at my disposal when I approach book 5. Which I simultaneously want immediately and don't think I can ever prepare for...
Review:
I was given the privilege of an advance copy for a review but all opinions are my own.
“When I look at you ______ _____, I do not see a warrior. I see a tide-turner and fate-changer, a woman who could rewrite the paths of the stars if she chose. And I would like to be part of your choices, because a woman like that is someone I can entrust my wings to.”
You will never guess whom this quote is about nor whom the conversation is between. You just WILL NOT. And when you reach this quote your heart will swell, your eyes will fill and you will experience a renewed faith in all things hopeful and fantastical. ...but...I get ahead of myself.
Allow me to rewind: We find our beloved heroines and heroes on the precipice of a new adventure. Albeit an adventure that is a mixture of politics, intrigue and...healing. Going into this book I truly wondered: how will our cabal recover from what they have been through? They have been driven to the precipice of breaking time and time again. They have not broken, but oh have they come so very close.
“I don’t hate this kingdom, nor do I need to know its heart to know its worth. Only yours.”
Ashe has quite the journey ahead of her...I’m afraid to spoil anything because it it a dark, messy path that you need to walk with her to truly appreciate the depth to which she will crawl. She is struggling with her demons and with her self-worth. We see her set forth with our beloved Mal...and the development in their relationship...let me tell you is a whole lot of up arrows, side arrows, spiraling down arrows and then...a golden arrow finally finds its mark. But that’s all I’m going to say about THAT. (Oh and Mal is perfection and I love him and he has some of the BEST quotes and the end) The takeaway is: they’re off to help Cistine stave off King Jad’s menacing presence on the southern border and they’ll need all their cunning, strength and also vulnerabilities to do this. They encounter friendly faces, treacherous scoundrels and VERY unexpected allies. And I LOVED the tension-filled relationship Ashe has with King Cyril. Complicated, strenuous and yet…
“The beat of their blades pounded out the imperfections of her sorrow, fear, and anger like a hammer on new steel.”
Our dear Cistine. Is suffering. And this is where the brilliance of one R. Dugan comes in...we see Cistine floundering, not sleeping. Trying to work out her trauma on the practice grounds one lunge, one feint, one pounding of her fists at a time. But, it is wearing her down and she is stuck in a dark place. As are many of the cabal. They’re all still reeling from the events of the previous book and all are coping in ways they know how. With the impending trials and events tethering they are still being tested and and still fighting the good fight.
“Change precipitated by pressure can’t withstand the storm. I’ve learned this the most difficult way.” Mira tapped a finger over her heart. “Change begins when we choose light over whatever darkness hunts us. I’ve had to rise from my share of shadows, not because anyone begged me to, but because I grew tired of living in the pit. Are you tired, Cistine? Are you ready to rise?”
What I particularly loved about this book, however, was the introduction of a counselor-Mirasseh or Mira. Cistine is developing her abilities but encountering barriers within herself to fully embrace them. She starts to speak with Mira, as do other characters, and THIS is something I want to see more of in Fantasy! I highlighted SO many quotes from her discussions with Mira, and other character. So many reflective, thoughtful observations. For the characters’ benefits but also for our own, ultimately, as readers. Mira’s words were both a balm and a strengthening tool. She soothed and steeled the characters, and us, for what was yet to come. For, boy oh boy, do they have a lot thrown at them.
“I wanted everything I have now so badly, the treaties, this chance…” Her gaze flicked to him, a silent conclusion that that sent his stomach into somersaults: you. “But I can’t enjoy any of it with all this chaos tangled inside me.”
The trial is the ever-present, hovering dark cloud throughout the book. Progress is made only to have a wrench thrown in the whole carefully crafted machinery that is their case against Saltator. Evil incarnate. (I’m not biased). Members of the cabal steel themselves to face him in court and they are all tested with the stunts he pulls, manipulations he spins and lies he sows. He’s a masterful villain...and I hate him so much. I hate how he made our characters feel so small. I hate that he infiltrated their thoughts, left scars on their bodies and doubts in their minds. Our characters have been embattled on so many fronts...yet they still keep battling. This cabal has been through so much but they always find their way back to one another. And even manage to grow a bit in numbers and allies...
“They were a strange entourage: five warriors, a Tribune and one of his twenty-seven lovers, a young girl, and a princess in armor, all led by a wolf. The only held silence in common on the way to the ceremony where Thorne would finally accept the power to change injustice, cruelty, and imbalance in Valgard.”
What I love about this book in no particular order: Mental health advocacy!! People of all different genders, sizes, races, abilities, traumas, ages! MAGIC. Surprises (good and bad). Heart gripping action sequences. Heart-breaking, difficult scenes. GROWTH. So much character growth. So many moments that made me so proud! Tati and uncovering the truth, getting back in touch with her passions. Quill: I’m just so happy he has his selvenar and sister. Their scenes warm my heart and he is a steady presence in the cabal. And reliable for snark. Ariadne: her strength, grace, dignity and how she fought her was back to herself. Aden: This poor man has been through so much. I’m just happy he is slowly finding redemption and peace. Thorne and Cistine: finding their way towards healing. However, these characters do not use one another to heal. The work on healing themselves, in a healthy way. And grow ever-closer as a result.
“She was in no place to tell him how to heal his pain, and he was in no position to heal hers.”
I want to conclude with a note that: this book can be heart clenching but it is also full of hope and so much humour! Pippet causes mischief to no end, as do other characters. They find time for beautiful moments together, as a found family. Which is so precious and heart-warming. A LOT happens in this book, one of the most exciting events belongs to the mystery quote at the beginning of this review… And the ending definitely has me itching for the next book because I NEED ANSWERS and RESOLUTIONS. Also I can’t wait to see what Cistine does in this next chapter...and Ashe...and everyone. Overall: Such a wonderful continuation of a truly excellent series!
