This year I decided that, on occasion, I would read an entire series and post a single review at the end.
The first series was “The Lost Fleet” which had 22 books and I gave 4.5 Stars.
The second is the 20-volume “Dragon Wars” which, to be honest, struggled to reach 3 Stars.
On the plus side there is a believable world(s) and a suitably fantastical plot involving magic, mayhem and, most importantly, time travel.
The overall plot concerns Grey Cloak and Dyphestive, two teenager/young adults/adults, depending whether you are in their past, present or future, and their attempt to overthrow the massive and evil dragon Black Frost and his minions.
It is very much YA - there is zero cursing and absolutely no sex.
What is does have is an extraordinary amount of onomatopoeia (a word I never thought I would use in a review).
Over several pages around the 3536 page mark “CHA-THOOM” occurs not once but 14 times. It is not just annoying it is the sort of stuff that prompted me to disengage.
I made it as far as book 16 before finally throwing in the towel.
Why?
There is pretty much zero progression in terms of relationships between the characters, and I never felt any real connection to them.
Another thing that annoyed me was a reference to the “Darkslayer”series:- “Learn more about the world of BISH in my other Sword and Sorcery Masterpiece, the Darkslayer Omnibus.”
To be perfectly clear “Dragon Wars” is not a masterpiece, it is not even close to a masterpiece. It is competent, workmanlike, writing.
I have no idea about the 'Darkslayer Omnibus' but, on the evidence before me, I very much doubt that it is any better.

Bedlam is a Good Title

Insanity. Wild confusion. This book takes the story all over the place. Past and present. Traitors all around, on both sides. Goals are achieved, some with regrets. Surprises abound. I recommend this book.

oh my goodness

Now this story is full of action and surprises. I thought I had it figured out but the author totally surprised me. I can’t wait to read the next book. Excellent.
