The Shadow Series #1

Twinned Shadow

Rate this book
I’m bait to draw out my sister’s killer and my sexy bodyguard might have killed her. All my awful family cares about is what I wear. Funerals suck.

A Foothold In Two Different Worlds, And No Safety In Either…

I, Becka Rowan, live in a time of uneasy peace. A fragile truce stands between humans, shifters, and the fae-touched—those who turn inward to their Houses for loyalty and protection and live in isolation from the outside world.

For an ungifted like me, that’s impossible to do.

Born of the fae but not blessed with their powers, I’ve grown up as an outcast within the human world. Humans don’t trust people like me with fae heritage, and the fae don’t bother with the ungifted. I said screw it and embraced college, determined to make my own fate.

Just when I thought I could start a prestigious internship and continue my quest to address interspecies conflict, someone murdered my twin sister, an adept illusionist and heir to our family lineage.

So, I’m going back home to say goodbye. Back to House Rowan. I take a deep breath, knowing after a short few days I’ll return to the city, free again from the melodrama of the House I was raised in.

There’s just one hitch in my plan—Quinn, a fae-touched member of the Enforcer’s Guild assigned to investigate the killing. Quinn doesn’t let the typical fae prejudices against the ungifted prevent him from staying close to me. Uncomfortably close. Besides, he needs my help to figure out what happened to my sister.

How can I refuse?

When a book does the whole "your family/guild/house/etc kicked you out for some political reason (not enough power, not the right power, someone was clearing out everyone above them in the line of succession, whatever), but now they want you back" thing, it is imperative to me that the FMC not be a fucking doormat.

Ideally, she will tell them to go fuck themselves. But it can work if she goes but refuses to be manipulated or bend to their whims.

This book doesn't do any of that. This bitch is basically a gullible Gumby, clearly so desperate for her family's acceptance that she meekly does what is expected of her, or allows herself to be manipulated into their plans.

She makes endless stupid decisions. She lets them order them around even though she is fucking outcaste and they have no authority over her. And when she inevitably finds she does have power (that's not a spoiler, of fucking course she has power), she lets them bring her right back into the fold without even a single fucking second of protest.

I just wanted to shake her and tell "they don't give a fuck about you! The minute you were not useful to them - at 16! - they cast you out into the world alone! You don't owe them a damn thing, and they do not deserve to lay claim to your new magic, you stupid asshole!"

I knew it was a losing battle, though, when really early on you find out that to support her (financially) after she's kicked out, she would have to agree to give them any baby she has if it shows magical aptitude. Just GIVE them the child, but stay outcaste herself. That's not a spoiler, the blurb mentions it. I assumed that she told them to go fuck themselves and made her own way in the world. Ha, no. She signed the deal and took the money.

And that, really, tells you everything you need to know about this spineless FMC. Becka is spineless, TSTL, and pretty much useless.

And Quinn is meh. A weird manipulative liar that maybe is okay, but that I don't expect much from.

Meh. Not reading on.

It was an okay start. Interesting enough for me to read the next one.
But I'm unsure about the series.
Because the problem for me is that I think this is a really interesting plot that could go places, but
I literally hate all of the characters, so...

*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from the author*

It's a 4.5 for me. I love that it took its time but didn't drag, and the details were potent enough to honestly give references if I ever wanted to draw the scenes out, and I like that.

Becka was kicked out eight years ago for not having any gifts, something the fae consider dire as it's the only thing that separates them from the humans. She's had to survive on her own but she's had help from another outcast, and technically the House pay for her expenses, though with the involuntarily price of taking in any magical children she may have. (She can't go with them, obs.)

But she's endured and adapted and has come out better for it. Becka's finally begun to seen the fruits of her labor, and it all goes awry when her father calls her back home for her twin sister's funeral. I thought the author did a good job at showing her grief without it overpowering the rest of the necessary things. Like... this story started off as a sad funeral for a loved one but it slowly turned into a mystery to be solved, one full of anticipation and side romance (without all the first-love spiels). And then there was that craziness that you couldn't really tell who was against her and who was genuinely there to help her.

The way they treated her made me sick and I honestly don't know how she didn't lose her control, but she kept it cool most of the time. By the end of the story, you kind of get an idea of what her family is really like, and for some of them, I find them more interesting that frustrating, and I think I saw a bit of character development by the last few pages?

It ends on a twist that makes you want to read the next book I love how much I got out of this. It didn't blow through the plot and it took its time with the people and world-building. There wasn't an info-dump and it grew organically when the scene called for knowing about something, otherwise it made you feel like you were in suspense. It's a definite recommend.

I read both the Preview (Shadow in the City) and “Twinned Shadows” back to back. What a unique concept: two twin Fae sisters, one destined to be the Heir of House Rowan, and one exiled to human areas. In “Shadow in the City” the two sisters meet surrepticiously through texting and then have a lunch together. Tesse is described as lavender petals in motion, the prose making me feel the magic.
But all is not well this alternative universe. Although humans, Fae, and Shifters have created a super-police force to keep the peace, it is uneasy. Humans treat the Fae like we have always treated the conquered after a war: as second-class citizens. Shifters are present but frankly, I don’t think Candice Bundy placed enough depth behind their society interactions to mention them. AI-driven cars and cell phones indicate this is a world placed about 20 years in our future....maybe.
Unlike Tess, who grew up a Princess, trained in Illusions and grace, Becka has lived a scrappy life. She is pursuing a doctorate but faces discrimination and oddly, drug-addicted (fae blood) humans on the streets. She knows to avoid the alleys and shadows.
Becka saves Tessa from one abusive situation (which was a macabre dinner-hour debate), but Tessa later is murdered. Shocked and confused, she accepts her father’s request to attend a funeral, and mistakenly thinks Quinn is her ride. LOL, I don’t want to give the rest away, but the story is half murder-investigation and half a rebellion against tradition and place. Becka is constantly being sought as a lab rat. Seriously, read the Internship interview: she needs to ask if she is the one involved in the study, or IS the subject of the study. Ewww. There is an unwashed part of society in both human and fae areas.
The romance between Quinn and Becka is hot but limited to groping and kissing (no TMI). I absolutely want to see it develop. It is also refreshing to see a policeman or detective portrayed in a positive way.
The other supporting characters have depth and motivations, too. However, I did not see enough of Aunt Lydia. I want more! I want to hear more about the shifters, too. There is so much still to develop. Although this story seems complete it is obvious that more has been written and plotted out. There are unanswered questions, especially now that Becka has to take on the roll of Heir. Oops.
I could say more, but you need to read this.

Candice Bundy – Shadow Series Bk 1 – Twinned Shadow – Reviewed 1/13/20 – Read 1/12/20
Outcasted, Devesting Murder, Unexpected results all lead to a drastic change for Becka!

Tested and found ungifted (no powers), Becka Rowan was outcasted from the Fae community, never to see her twin sister or family again. Or so she thought! For eight years she had made her way in the human world with schooling and now a chance at an internship to help change the relationship between Fae and humans. Then, the fateful call from her father, telling her that her twin sister had been murdered. She was to return immediately to the funeral. After she takes her final leave with her sister, she’ll be able to return to the world that she has finally created for herself. The escort that they send to bring her back, hmm he is delicious looking. Quinn is fae-touched, and he is a member of the Enforcer’s Guild assigned to investigate her sister’s death. Even though she is ungifted, Quinn insists that he will let no harm come to her. Together they work to find the killer. Unexpected things start to happen to Becka that would all lead to the drastic change in her life, that she never expected nor after all this time did she want. What happens??? Is she in danger?? Will her life ever be the same again??

What did I like? It has been a while since I have ventured into the world of the Fae, shifters and the magical realm. It was refreshing and what a mystery did it turn out to be. I enjoyed the characters and the turn of events was quite unexpected.

What will you like? Wow, exciting, mystery, intrigue, deception, and new beginnings!! The characters are amazing and unique. The twists and turns are quick and certainly intriguing. The mystery begins on page one and builds all the way through. I love the descriptions and the details that Candice included. They were so descriptive, that I felt like I was right there. I could smell the forest and hear the birds in the trees. Excellent storyline and well thought out. The great thing is, this is just book one… just think of all the things that are to come!!!

This is a pretty good book, but it leaves you wanting more.

Becka is fae-touched, but she has been cast out of fae territory because she is ‘ungifted,’ i.e. she has no magical powers beyond enhanced senses that all fae have. Since she has been living in the human world, she has adapted and is even thriving, having continued her studies until she is nearing the point of getting her Ph.D. She wants to work on ways of improving human-fae relations, which are currently not too good.

Her life is suddenly interrupted when she receives news of her twin sister’s tragic death. Her family wants her to return home for the funeral. But they don’t treat her very well when she comes.

She is escorted home by Quinn, a member of an organization that functions something like fae police. He is more handsome than any detective has a right to be. He is also annoying. But he is using Becka’s return home to investigate Tessa's death, and Becka desperately wants to find her sister’s killer. She agrees to help Quinn in his investigation if he will tell her what he already knows.

In the process of investigating and attending a week’s worth of funeral events in Tessa’s honor, Becka discovers that she has somehow acquired powers after all, and is unexpectedly welcomed back into the family (although not very warmly). Her re-admittance to the family places her in the position of becoming her mother’s heir. It also means she is automatically engaged to her late sister’s fiancé. And, it seems, it means her life is now in danger from whoever killed her sister. Are all her dreams about to be shattered?

Becka Rowan is one of the fae-touched. When she was a teenager it was discovered that she had no magical talent, she became outcast, and was shipped off to live in a human city. Beck knew she would never return to the the House of Rowan, her ancestral home, but her twin sister was murdered and she has been invited to return so she can say goodbye. Beck didn't expect to be escorted by a fae-touched member of the Enforcer's Guild named Quinn, or the unexpected attraction she feels toward him. She quickly realizes that her sister's death is murder, and Quinn is there to investigate. She will also make it clear that she wants to be involved in the investigation, and that she wants to help find the person responsible for her sister's death.

Wow! Unique, compelling and well written characters. Becka and Quinn will face a dangerous fae with and agenda. Magic, murder, mystery, and some suspense, in a fascinating world. Fantastic book, I loved it!

Twinned Shadow: The Shadow Series book 1 by Candice Bundy is a 5 star read.
Becka Rowan is fae touched but she posses no magic, 8 years ago she was cast out to live in the human world where she was mostly shunned for her fae heritage, her twin sister Tesse is murdered on the day of her engagement and Becka is summoned home for the funeral. Becka no longer fits in with the fae but for her twin’s memory she tries a little, but her life is about to change in many ways that Becka may not be ready for.
Quinn is a fae enforcer who works with human’s, shifter’s and the fae, when he shows up to escort Becka home he believes she can lead him to her sisters murderer but he is hiding many secrets of his own.
I really loved this story, the characters were great and the storyline flowed wonderfully I can’t wait until the next book is released.

Becka and Quinn, Quinn and Becka... quintessential honey. Dark magic is trying to get her queen. I must say reading the first book after the second is somewhat disconcerting at first. But I simply had to do it as I got it false to start with. It’s equally amazing and annoying. Amazing because I discovered the roots of my “black holes” and disconcerting because I knew the outcome from the start. At this point I am glad I didn’t start with the third one!
This books from Candice Bundy are too captivating to not give the effort to read things twice. They are amazingly written, in the details and in the description of the feelings, even if only from one POV, are fantastic. One thing is for sure. If you like the world of fea, mixed with shifters and humans all in one, with mystery and crime and humor...this is for you. Definitely!
Enjoy your read!

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I am a twin so this book reached out to me and I was excited that there were so many different kind of characters. Becka is fae-touched but she was born without gifts and this gets her exiled from her people. She is going to school and working on human and fae relations which are not the best. When she almost has her Ph.d. that is when she finds out about the death of her twin sister. Her family calls her home, but they still don't treat her like family. Quinn the Enforcer that is investigating her twin's death is staying close to her and he does not seem to mind that she does not have gifts. I am excited to read the rest of the series.

This is my 1st read and review for this author and what a fantastic story I enjoyed it. Becka is a Fae Touched she has no magical powers so she’s exiled and taken to live with the humans away from her family and her twin sister, Becka gets on with her life until she gets a call that her sister is dead so Becka is allowed to go back home to House Rowan to say goodbye but that’s not enough for Becka she wants to find her sisters murderer. Quinn who is a member of the Enforcers Guild is there to investigate the murder and Becka tells him that she is going to help wether he likes it or not. Fantastic story I loved it and I highly recommend this book.

Who can she really trust?

Totally loved this book. Definitely want to read the next one.

Becka has been an outcast for the last eight years from her guild for being ungifted. When her twin sister dies she is invited back for the funeral so she can say goodbye to her sister and her closure. This is just the start of her life turning upside down, since she finds out her sister was killed and she has an unrequested escort/guard just in case the killer is after her as well.

This is a must read to find out how Becka handles everything and whether she gets the closure she wants or if life is more complex then anyone can imagine.

“Twinned Shadow” marks the start to “The Shadow Series” by Candice Bundy, an urban fantasy paranormal romance series featuring Becka Rowan, the ungifted half of a Fae twin sisters, who was exiled to the human world upon her birth, for her lacking of Fae powers. Unfortunately for Becka, human do not trust Fae, gifted and ungifted alike. After dealing with that prejudice all of the life, Becka has decided to move forward, accepting an esteemed college internship, that could help her to further approach the issue of interspecies conflict.

All her plans must be kept on hold though, as she is called back home for her murdered twin sister funeral. Reluctantly Becka goes back to House Rowan, confident that the trip will be no more than a short break for her chosen life in the human world. But of course, Fae business are never that simple, and as a member of the Enforcer’s Guild (Quinn) is called to investigate her sister’s murder (and prevent a possible attack on Becka herself), Becka joins him to resolve the case and find the killer. At least Quinn doesn’t seem to share the typical Fae prejudice against ‘ungifted Fae’.

Candice Bundy series is very well-written, fast-paced, and action-packed, with an exceptionally well-developed world, that successfully addresses each character’s personality and the rich social interactions between them. Nevertheless, the story is – as it should be – first of all, an urban fantasy story, designed to entertain, something it does in spades by mixing a ‘whodunnit’ plot with a romantic subplot into a very satisfying Fae related urban fantasy tale. Already looking forward to the next instalment in the series 😊

I received a free ARC of this novel via Hidden Gems in exchange for a review. My opinion is my own.

I have never read anything by Ms. Bundy before this but I will be looking for more by her in the future. This is the first book in this series although there is a prequel but it isn't something that you HAVE to read. The plot was really good. It made me feel a whole gauntlet of emotions for the heroine from sadness to frustration. The characters we well developed but I wasn't overly fond of most of them. I felt as though the heroine needed a little more backbone. Either way it was a great read and I will definitely be reading the next story in this series. I need to know what happens next!

A nice read!

I enjoyed this first part of the story. The main character and her position as an outcast to her native fae society provides a sympathetic start. The story quickly evolves, though, into much more. The world was interesting as were the various different paranormal groups and how they interacted with each other.

The danger to our main character feels real and the mystery is not easily figured out. The book does end with a minor story arch complete so no real cliffhanger. I certainly want to read the next one, though.

This book disappointed me a lot, because even thought it initially attempts to portray racism and interracial relationships in a fantastical setting, as it turns out, it ends up focusing on the love interests and personal anxieties of the main heroine. I did not think this book would end up like the Twilight Saga or Fifty Shades of Gray, and honestly, it felt quite bad. Just another coming-of-age, "love me even though we mustn't" kind of book, really.

Good start to a new fae series. Twin sisters, one gifted and one not on separate paths. Until Becka receives news of her twin and heir to the family is murdered. Hoping to return to the life she created after the funeral, her plans are dashed by Quinn a member of the Enforcer’s Guild who has been assigned to investigate the murder. Now they must work together to find the killer.

Becka Rowan is an ungifted, born fae but not blessed with powers. Her family, the House of Rowan, has labeled her an outcast and she's sent to live in the human world. The humans know about fae-touched and shifters, and don't regard them well in society. Becka refuses to let that keep her limited and tries to go to college and seek internship opportunities where they don't worry as much about her being fae. Her life however, is turned upside down when get "gifted" twin sister is found murdered. The House of Rowan invites Becka back for the funeral rights as is custom amoung the fae, but the killer is still out there and who knows if she'll be next. Quinn, a fae-touched member of the Enforcer's Guild is sent to investigate the death of Becka's twin and to keep an eye on Becka so she doesn't become the next victim.

I was hooked from the beginning with this story and did not want to put it down. I loved the idea that the humans, fae and shifters all knew about each other and the feel was more modern day then most stories. I liked Becka a lot. Her family basically disinherited her in her teens and she was sent to live in the human realm with an aunt who was also disinherited. Becka has given up being upset about her predicament and has instead tried to enjoy the freedoms of making her own choices and living her own life. The only thing keeping Becka tied to her past is her twin sister Tesse, who she secretly keeps in contact with. When Becka finds out Tesse is dead she is absolutely devastated and returns to her former home in the fae lands. There here fae family is obnoxious, rude and just plain mean to her because she's an outcast. I loved how she very rarely held her tongue and basically told them off when they were being rude to her, or did little things like wearing black instead of the traditional grey to the funeral rights. Even as the story progressed and she was forced to spend more time in the fae world, I loved how she stood up for herself and refused to be twisted back into their world.

Quinn was also a well written character who kept me guessing constantly. I could never quite make up my mind if he was on Becka's side or the killer himself. There were several other characters that Candice Bundy has you seconded guessing time and time again on how they are involved. I was actually not expecting the person that the actual killer turns out to be. Although I did feel the ending was slightly rushed, after all the build up we had to the killer, I did enjoy how the story came to an end and small cliffhanger left open. I look forward to reading the sequel and hope it comes out soon.

I received and advanced reader copy from Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.

The premise of this book was an excellent hook. An outcast diving back into the world she’d been banished from to find her twin sister’s murderer? I’m down for supernatural mysteries and this one promised to deliver.

Especially after the first few chapters, when we get to meet Becka. I loved her fierce independence and adoption of human culture. Denounced by the fae-touched, she embraced the Other, which was humanity in this case (humans and the fae-touched had a war a while back and the hostilities and prejudices are still trickling down to Becka’s time). While I loved that refusal to associate with anything tied to the people that banished her, I would have loved to see more bitterness come as a result of it. Or even bitterness toward humans, who might have tolerated her living among them, but still didn’t truly accept her. Candice Bundy goes to great pains to express how limbo-locked Becka is, not belonging to either group, but her personality doesn’t seem to reflect it truly. Sure, she has a few mean things to say to her family, but at the end of the day, it felt like she wasn’t truly messed up by their abandonment. She played nice (even though her family treated her horribly because of her ungifted status), slid back into the role of a dutiful daughter, and only made a few snappy retorts.

Quinn was similarly another character I had a few issues with. He seemed to be on the ball with everything. A revelation in the case was made to Becka, but then we had Quinn in the background, admitting that he knew that revelation already. It made him seem too perfect. Aside from his dark reputation (which actually wasn’t that dark as his reputation was as someone who seemed to value fairness over bigotry) he was the perfect book boyfriend: attentive, hot, mysterious, and charming.

The plot itself, at the beginning, was very engrossing. I followed along with the mystery, eager to uncover the clues and meet with the suspects. But when the culprit was announced, I felt disappointed. I won’t go into too many specifics, as I don’t want to spoil anything, but the stereotypical motivation and lackluster climax didn’t live up to the expectation I’d set from the stellar beginning of the book.

With all that said, I definitely encourage reading this book! I enjoyed it immensely and the only reason I’m drawing attention to these points is because after reading the author’s work, I feel like she can do better. I see great potential in her and I’m excited to see her skills progress as she keeps writing! 4 out of 5 stars!

Twinned shadows

I enjoyed the plot of the story. I enjoyed the idea of twin fairies even though one has a sad ending. The twists were good. I would have liked a better ending for the sister. Becca on the other hand was a very strong strong individual. I would recommend this book to those who like a murder mystery mixed with their fairy tale.
