This author is new to me. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it did not leave a good first impression.

This book is about two college sweethearts, Solana and Tommie, who are in a toxic and abusive relationship thanks to Tommie’s inability to cope with his promising future abruptly changing in a way he did not expect. Solana is pregnant and is trying to make the right decision for her and her baby and struggles with what to do with her relationship with Tommie. While Tommie struggles with his demons and his inability to control his anger and jealousy.

The story employed going back and forth between the present and flashbacks of the past. The past flashbacks help give context and history of the state of Solana and Tommie’s relationship in the present. However, the timeline of how the story was written in the present was confusing and disrupted the flow of reading. I’m still lost by how the story went from the baby shower scene to Solana sitting in a clinic about to get an abortion and Solana announcing her pregnancy to Tommie for the first time. How, sway?!?!

Scenes often abruptly ended and often jumped into a new day or scene without an appropriate paragraph break or lead in. There were other numerous grammatical errors in this book that made reading this book difficult for me. I will read the follow-up to this story, but I don’t think I will read any other books from this author unless there’s evidence of maturity in her writing and evidence a reputable editor was used before publishing.

New author to me. I got the overall message, but the timeline jumps were confusing. For example, one chapter mentions Solana being almost nine months pregnant, and the very next one still references abortion which made it hard to tell where we were in the story. It almost felt like certain chapters were out of order. I think with clearer sequencing, the story would’ve flowed a lot smoother.
