The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook: The Optimal Keto-Friendly Diet that Burns Fat, Promotes Longevity, and Prevents Chronic Disease

Rate this book
The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook is your guidebook to the ultimate superdiet, an evidence-based keto diet that emphasizes a diversity of fish, healthy fats, and a rainbow of colorful vegetables--with 100 delicious recipes for everything from snacks to dinner.

The Mediterranean diet has long been touted as one of the world's healthiest diets, renowned for its protective effects against heart disease, cancer, and other chronic illnesses. However, its heavy inclusion of grains and carbohydrates can contribute to obesity and is a drawback for many. Also shown to have many health benefits, the ketogenic diet stimulates the fat-burning and longevity-promoting state of ketosis by limiting carbs and emphasizing high-fat foods. While the keto diet is about the proportion of macronutrients (fats, protein, carbohydrates) in the food you eat, the Mediterranean diet is about specific food seafood, olive oil, colorful vegetables, and other anti-inflammatory foods.

This book is about living and eating at the intersection of these complementary diets so you can reap the benefits of both. While both diets advocate significant amounts of healthy fats and protein, The new Mediterranean approach to keto significantly shifts the fat profile of the diet to emphasize the monounsaturated and omega-3 fats that health experts agree promote living a long disease-free life. It also includes colorful vegetables, providing a diversity of nutrients and flavor. The result is an enhanced Mediterranean diet that stokes metabolism, supports the gut and microbiome, and is anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and nutrient-dense.

3☆ A Variety of interesting Mediterranean Recipes.

This book was a tough one for me, I didn't particularly dislike this book and it would most definitely appeal to a wide variety of readers.... it's just for me I didn't particularly find any of the recipes that inspiring. Which is odd for me as I normally find something I like.
I'm not a lover of eating fish, In fact I would go as far to say I dislike it alot and there is a fair amount of fishy recipes.

I'm not familiar with the keto diet so maybe that's why I'm not necessarily inspired by the recipes.

I did however find the ingredients to be rather on the expensive side, like octopus, sea bass, scallops, duck, venison, they certainly wouldn't be in my price range especially if you was feeding a family of 4.

I really liked all the fun facts that were scattered about within the recipes. They was really interesting.

The recipes are measured in Grams and Oz and spoons so easy enough to convert.

Overall a good cookbook with a variety of recipes, not all of the recipes are illustrated which is a lil bugbear of mine, but what was illustrated was done beautifully.
I would recommend The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook to others, it just wasn't the cookbook for me!

My hubby and I went keto last fall. For me it was to improve my health post-covid when I was left with a lot of lingering diabetes-like issues (even though I was not diabetic before getting sick, that has been reported by others as well) and for hubby it was about weight loss. It has worked very well for both of us. I lost a lot extra weight that had been stubbornly hanging around since I turned 40 and we both feel good (my heart palpitations have mostly gone away, my blood pressure is down again, my blurry vision has improved, I have energy again, etc.). I cook very clean keto and look for healthy keto recipes, which can be hard with all the "cheese and pork rinds" types of keto cookbooks out there. I seek out Mediterranean recipes since the health effects are well known, so this book was a perfect resource.

The recipes are diverse and fairly easy to follow. Nutritional information is given for every recipe, with more detail than most (things like healthy oil percentages, detailed macros, etc. are given) and there are lots of color recipes. The beginning gives a very good overview of the benefits of both diets and what foods are best for you. I'm looking forward to trying a lot of the recipes.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook is an amazing recipe book to help you to eat a much healthier diet.
The book starts out introducing you to the style of the Mediterranean diet and the science behind this type of diet and cooking. Then the book moves on to mouthwatering recipes that had my taste buds tingling.
I received a pdf version of the book so I've screenshot some of the recipes I really want to give a go to try at a later date.
Each recipe includes symbols as to if certain dietary restrictions are included etc and there are the odd fun facts to go with some dishes spotted through the book.
I just hope my attempt looks as good as the photos in this book.

If you're looking to eat healthier you're going to want to add this cookbook to your stash. Very well thought out with symbols on each page to show which dietary restrictions that recipe meets, servings, hands-on time, overall time, nutrition facts and the occasional "fun fact" about a particular recipe or ingredient.

Thank you to Quarto Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me to preview this cookbook. My review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

Originally posted on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook is a tutorial guide with recipes by Martina Šlajerová et al. Due out 13th April 2021 from Quarto on their Fair Winds Press imprint, it's 208 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

The Mediterranean diet has gotten a lot of attention because of its association with a wide variety of health benefits including a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and early death. This book provides a good introduction (the authors call it a crash course) to the science behind the diet and lifestyle for beginners wanting to make changes to their eating habits for health benefits and a healthier lifestyle. Extra information is provided in highlighted text boxes with short information bits which are accessible and easy to understand. The book also includes clear colorful graphics to help make information easier to remember. This book contains recipes which are also keto-friendly for weight loss and maintenance.

The layout is logical and easy to follow. The introduction covers the basics of the Mediterranean Diet, tools, supplies, and the how-to and why of choosing ingredients. The following chapters include the recipes arranged roughly by category: breakfast, snacks, salads & soups, lunches, dinners, sides, desserts, and partial recipe ingredients (sauces, spice mixes, pesto, etc).

Ingredient measurements are supplied in American standard measurements with metric in parentheses. The nutritional information: calories, fat, carbs, and protein content are listed for the recipes as well as macronutrient ratios, fat breakdowns, and serving sizes. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in sidebars. The recipes themselves are fairly straightforward and are made with easily sourced ingredients. Many are very simple, none of them are overly complex. I didn't count the number of recipes, but there are a lot.

The photography is abundant, clear, and appealing; roughly 2/3rds of the recipes are illustrated, and serving suggestions are appropriate and appetizing.

This is a nice collection of recipes and will keep cooks going for ages. Many of these can also easily be adapted to other styles of cooking and meal planning.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

The beginning of this cookbook gives the reasons for the diet as well as important health benefits of certain foods. The recipes in the book look good with beautiful pictures. Some of the recipes have a lot of ingredients and/or unusual ingredients which may throw some readers off.

If ever there was a time to explore a new cookbook, this is the time. I have been the chief cook in my house since last March, and honestly, I have run out of new ideas. Especially healthy ones, and not just making pasta, again. While I don't personally follow a strict Mediterranean or Keto diet, what I do want is healthy, non-processed food that tastes good too. You will find all that and more in this cookbook, and if you do want to learn more about the science behind eating certain foods, that is here too. So many cookbooks claim to have nutritional recipes, yet provide very little information to back up those claims. What I appreciated most were the detailed nutritional information and the gorgeous pictures. I didn't have to Google a similar recipe to see how it should look, and I have run into that with so many other cookbooks.
There are sections for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, soup and salads, and desserts. I was extremely happy to have some new ideas, and a few of my favorites so far are the Superfood Omelet, Eggplant Manicotti, and the Wild Mushroom Chicken Risotto. A very informative book whether you want to change your whole diet, or just make some changes and make it healthier.

We enjoyed Šlajerová's Keto Slow Cooker & One-Pot Meals: Over 100 Simple & Delicious Low-Carb, Paleo and Primal Recipes for Weight Loss and Better Health (Volume 4) and a few of those recipes have become staples at our house. So we were excited to find this Mediterranean cookbook, but the excitement evaporated quickly once we started reading the recipes, and ultimately none of them stood out enough for us to even try. That's one star from us, because it really can't get worse than a cookbook that doesn't inspire you to cook!

We understand that this book wants to present "NEW" Mediterranean dishes, and we really don't mind experimenting with food, but this just doesn't work well. The thing is, traditional Mediterranean cookery is already perfectly tasty and perfectly healthy, so why would you go and change things in the first place? But if you are going to attempt such an ambitious project as improving on Mediterranean food, you really need to do better than to replace a few ingredients and call it a day. There's far too much emphasis on "superfoods" and replacement foods (collagen shakes, low-carb sweetener, coconut/almond flours) and more stuff that just plain isn't Mediterranean (curry, poke, coconut aminos, lime juice). There's lots of coconut oil, ghee, and avocado oil in these recipes, instead of olive oil... so you're needlessly introducing extra saturated fats (from coconuts and butter) and what's more, these flavors don't even go with the rest of Mediterranean cooking. It just makes no sense. Similarly, there's a noticeable lack of the delicious nuts and seeds that typically add healthy fats to Mediterranean dishes: walnuts, pistachios, pine nuts, almonds, sesame... Some of the recipes actually call for Brazil nuts and macadamias -- tropical nuts with higher saturated fat content. Just why?!

Should I mention the Nordic Stone Age Bread which contains things like flaxseeds, chia seeds, "olive oil or ghee," and black pepper? Pretty sure the Nordic peoples of the Stone Age didn't have access to South American pumpkin seeds and chia seeds; Mediterranean olive oil; or black pepper (which, at the time, was just being discovered by people in present-day India). And what is this random concoction doing in a Mediterranean recipe collection? Come on already.

We've been eating low-carb Mediterranean for about a year now, simply by combining fish/eggs/meat with plenty of veggies prepared in traditional Mediterranean ways. When you can have grilled or oven-roasted zucchini, there really is no need for watery zoodles and other such silly re-inventions. This book suffers from a serious lack of focus and culinary/cultural/historical understanding.

What a fabulous and clever idea, combining the world's healthiest Mediterranean diet with the low carb, high fat ketogenic diet (or, as I like to say, lifestyle). These are 100 recipes with a purpose...to include superfoods in a balanced way with the nutritional values listed. Every single ingredient plays a role. These are not recipes which happen to be healthy but chosen carefully to provide us with what our bodies need. And the photography is crystal clear and vibrant, mouthwatering.

First, the four knowledgeable authors with culinary, healthcare and scientific backgrounds point to science and benefits (though this is not textbookish) of the New Mediterranean diet and keto and explain the principles of the book along with illustrations. The insulin octopus is my favourite analogy, one I will remember.

Second, the recipes which make optimal use of the described superfoods (which have changed, by the way). So many are complete meals such as Greek Breakfast Power Bowl, Herb and Cheese Fritters (making for lunch!), Upgraded Shrimp Cocktail Salad, Five-Superfood Salmon Brain Bowl and Pancetta-Wrapped Sea Bas Sheet Pan. Not only are we given the nutrition values but tips, key points and fun facts. I plan to make most of these dishes but will start off with Fennel Tzatziki, Goat's Cheese and Hazelnut Dip; Coconut Shrimp Skillet; and Poached Chicken with Fettucine Avgolemono. In summer I will make the Lemon Berry Cream Pops.

As a forager who lives part time in the Mediterranean on a keto diet for health reasons this book is my wheelhouse...and then some. Talk about refreshingly original and inspiring! I taught culinary classes and am always looking for new techniques and combinations. Got it here. So, if you are seeking something different, something healthy (I mean truly healthy) do pick up this book to add to your culinary lifestyle repertoire.

My sincere thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Fair Winds and NetGalley for the privilege of reading this compelling ARC.

I am food obsessed. I drive friends and family mad by constantly watching things like MasterChef and Saturday Kitchen, trying to find the next wild and interesting thing to attempt cooking.

I don't need a diet, but I am very conscious of what ingredients I use or what something contains. I don't trust most ready made sauces for instance (no matter how well renowned) as I'm not convinced what quality ingredients went in to it.

The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook grabbed me right from the start. I am terrible at being told what I should and shouldn't eat, but this book cleverly explains why things are good for you and how to make subtle changes to what you already cook with. Nothing authoritarian such as 'you must' or 'do not use', it simply lists the benefits of various ingredients and what a difference they can make for very little alterations.

I've long thought it's not about 'what' you eat but the attitude towards the food you eat and what you cook with.

The recipes are interesting and clearly healthier alternatives to what some may already make, but I didn't find anything overly revolutionary unfortunately, but perhaps that's because I am quite adventurous with what I cook. It does however serve as fantastic inspiration of how to apply the ingredients you learn about in the first chapter and how to incorporate those changes in to your diet.

The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook: The Optimal Keto-Friendly Diet that Burns Fat, Promotes Longevity, and Prevents Chronic Disease by Martina Slajerova; Thomas DeLauer; Nicholas Norwitz; Rohan Kashid
Publisher: Quarto Publishing Group – Fair Winds
Genre: Cooking, Food & Wine | Health, Mind & Body
Release Date: 20 April 20, 2021

The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook combines keto practices with the Mediterranean Diet, looking to help people improve health, wellness and longevity. The book opens with the science behind these combined diets, how & why they work, as well as some important terms to know. This book is written in plain English so it is easy to read.

There are easy to understand icons included with each recipe that identify dietary restrictions. There are also nutrition facts with each recipe.

The recipes are broken into the following characters: Breakfast, Snacks, Salads & Soups, Lunches, Dinners, Sides, Desserts, and Basics.

I absolutely love reading cookbooks because I'm always looking for new foods to that my husband will eat! I look forward to trying some of the recipes (but I'm not sure I can convince my hubs to try anything though).

I'm so grateful to the authors, Quarto Publishing Group – Fair Winds, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.

5* for this great book. The format is excellent and easy to understand. I love that the staple foods are explained in great detail with key points highlights in the yellow boxes. The practical tips are so informing and certainly give you plenty to think about.

Recipes start from page 35 and there are so many great choices in this book that I myself know I will be very busy in the kitchen whipping up delicious healthy meals.

Recipes are easy to follow with all the nutrition facts at the end of each recipe. Each recipe includes interesting information and extra tips for you to experiment with.

There are many fun facts which are all really helpful also.

Pictures of recipes are colourful and give great examples of how your recipes look like.

Each recipe gives you servings, hands on time and overall time.

Overall I was very impressed with this book and will definitely be purchasing this one. Well done to the writers of the book.

Thanks to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Fair Winds for the opportunity to read and review this book.

An interesting cookbook full of health nuggets. It's great to educate you about the properties of certain foods and how to combine them for maximised efficiency. I enjoyed those little snippets on every page. There are a lot of tasty looking breakfast recipes and I liked how the book was divided into breakfast, snacks, salad/soups, lunch, dinner, sides and desserts. The dinner section was the most interesting to me with many flavourful options and suggestion for varied meals, I want to try the Moroccan lamb tagine, the Sciency liver saute skillet, mackerel with cilantro slaw, and a lot more. But I can't help but feel that there were a lot of similar feel recipes too, a lot of avocados and salmon, a lot of spirilized zucchini and a huge amount of recipes containing cauliflower. Of course there are no carbs, so the options are restricted. And I guess that if you buy a machine for making zucchini pasta you want to use it at its fullest, but I don't really intend to get one so I guess it was bound to stand out to me.

The cover of this recipe book is really appealing. It made me request it from the publishers as soon as I saw it. The photographs of the food throughout are very well presented and make the dishes appealing. .

Recipes are clearly written, from an American point of view so imperial measurements and cup measurements are given first, but helpfully there are metric measurements as well..

There is a lot of ‘science’ to convince you that higher fat, lower carb and Keto are the way forward, combined with the benefits of Mediterranean eating. It’s interesting enough to flick through this at the beginning and read about the benefits of various foods and the impact they may have upon the body. You can take the science as far as you want to, the main thing is the recipes and they look really tasty. Lots of the recipes will appeal; I don’t think you have to be committed to a Keto diet, or eat Mediterranean style meals all the time. I shall definitely be trying a few..

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book.

This is a cookbook that promises recipes for a healthy, keto based diet. That may well be true but, importantly, it is a book filled with good sounding food. There are chapters on breakfasts, snacks, salads & soups, lunches, dinners, sides and desserts. There are also a lengthy introduction, a section on basics and another on further reading. The photos show appealing looking foods.

A few examples of the recipes; these are from the breakfast chapter. There are green spinach & salmon crepes, Turkish egg bowl, sausage-avo-egg stack and creamy cinnamon porridge, among others. These recipes look easy to follow.

For readers who are intrigued, enjoy looking at recipes for the rest of the day and more. This cookbook looks like a very good resource.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

Disclaimer: I received this book for free in exchange of my honest opinion.

A few years ago I read another book my Martina Šlajerová, also focused on keto. In comparison, this one is much better. I actually quite liked the sciency bits in this book, but it still suffers of too much ketosis in my humble opinion, like its claim of not eating the rainbow when it comes to veggies, because some vegetables have more carbs than others, which I naturally disagree with. Plus I am a strong believer in enjoying the cauliflower as a cauliflower not cauliflower rice or pizza crust!

But overall it's an okay book, with nice recipes. I still disagree with the name of the book - it tries to hide keto under the Mediterranean diet.

This is more than just another Mediterranean Diet Cookbook. This book combines the healthy and popular Mediterranean diet with the Ketogenic diet. It is filled with information about both diets and how they can complement one another. The format is easy to understand and the mouthwatering photos are in color. The recipes go beyond the basic Mediterranean staples of fish and olives. There are notes and helpful items throughout the book and explanations about why certain ingredients are better than others. The recipes are simple enough with easy-to-find ingredients. I am looking forward to cooking my way through this book. Bon appetit!

THE NEW MEDITERRANEAN DIET COOKBOOK is almost a unicorn for those of us searching for healthy habits. This cookbook modifies the Mediterranean Diet with a low-carb Keto approach, providing the hope that this cross-section is slightly better than either approach alone. There is a great introduction that describes the value in this approach. Each recipe has micronutrient counts listed for ease of use. I made one of the recipes in the book and was pleased with the outcome. This book is definitely at the cusp of healthy eating, for those wishing to cook or bake at home. I borrowed this excellent book electronically and read through it in one sitting. My goal was to take in what I could learn from the very qualified writers, and, to give the recipes a little ‘once over’.
I was very impressed with what I learned, and yes, it was really enjoyable for me. Why? because in my personal experience and development in my approach to dietary habits, I have become a ketogenic/mediterranean life-styler.
This book fits perfectly with my personal approach! and, the vast majority of recipes are so different from my normal ones. Greek, Middle Eastern and Italian recipes abound. I am sure I am in heaven.

>:( Not a Mediterranean diet cookbook at all, it's a keto cookbook trying to cash in with a misleading title.

It removes components of the actual Mediterranean diet (like pulses and legumes) and replaces them with things like red meat, and calls that 'improvements'.

Seriously: 'The Mediterranean diet has long been touted as one of the world's healthiest diets, renowned for it's protective effects against heart disease, cancer and other chronic illnesses..' but don't follow that, follow this quite different diet we've devised instead. 'So you can reap the benefits of both...' Eh? No, you can't.

Returned to library next day.

I'm possibly in the minority here, but I didn't love this. I don't usually follow a Keto diet, but I've recently needed to cut down on carbs and wanted some recipe ideas. Some of them sounded really nice - the spiced cauliflower dish looks delicious! - but a lot of them were things I either wouldn't eat, or were fairly basic (I'm not convinced the book needs as many recipes as it has for cauliflower rice variations). However, I'm probably not the ideal target audience - I'm a big fan of carbs usually!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this.

The recipes are pretty simple to prepare and sound delicious. I even have a few marked to make this weekend.

Not every recipe has a photo, but the ones that do are scrumptious looking.

I really didn't like the beginning. I understand they were trying to bring for science to the masses. But the analogies didn't help, and further confused their point.

I feel like this book really tried to give a science lesson behind diseases, and the illustrations were cool but I really just wanted recipes. The recipes start on page 36 with breakfast foods. I do appreciate the fact that *almost* every recipe has a picture with it; I will almost always skim over recipes without pictures.

The graphics in the science section are colorful and interesting, and the writing style is accessible.

We love the types of foods emphasized in this book, and, although we haven't tried the recipes yet, they appear to be less complicated than many other cookbooks of similar type.

I particularly like the "optional" for sweeteners in the recipe. The more one is on a sugar-free keto journey, the less sweetener is needed overall. Glad it is acknowledged in this book.

Some really interesting recipes. I'm reminded to try cauliflower rice in more of my meals and the huge benefits of salmon to health.

I'm going to try the coconut lollies as my husband is a huge coconut fan. I'm going to add this cookbook to my present list :)

I'm struggling to get a 2:1 or more fat:protien ratio and this book has that PLUS a lot of really good and practical recipes. I especially like that a lot of the recipes are for 1 or 2 servings. Other keto cooks who have good recipes (Maria E.) unfortunately have them for an entire household which isn't typical for people on keto.
