Make Mine a Double

Nick specializes in drinks, not feelings. With a passion shaken not stirred, can the new guy serve up romance?

If love ever walked into his bar, mixologist Nick Valentine would send it right back out the door. Figuring casual hookups are the best he can expect, he’d rather give his time to his makeshift family of inebriated patrons. But when the delicious new bouncer catches his eye, he can’t deny the flutters of his watered-down heart.

Former soldier Davis “FatBoy” Newman can’t imagine coming out. But when the snarky hunk behind the bar proves irresistible, he wonders if he should risk it all for love. After days of subtle hints and flirty looks, the smitten security man finally secures an after-hours first kiss.

Just as Nick thinks he might have something real, St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans and an offensive live Irish band conspire to keep them apart. And while FatBoy is head-over-heels, staying safely in the closet may cost him everything.

Can their perfectly mixed connection pour them a happily-ever-after?

Originally released by another publisher as two standalone books, the novella edition of 6 Days to Valentine, and the novel length edition of 6 Days to Get Lucky have been re-edited into a single edition and given new book and series titles. No significant additional new material has been added.

At seventeen, LE Franks walked away from writing for love. Jumping head first into real life and travelling the world seemed to be fair compensation until the characters in her head demanded their turn. Now, living in the San Francisco Bay Area, surrounded by inspiration everywhere, LE is finally taking off the filters and giving the stories free rein. These days, LE can be found frequently writing about sexy men who desperately need a happily ever.

LE writes M/M Romance in a unique mix of humor and drama with enough suspense to produce fast-paced stories filled with emotion and passion and featuring characters that are quirky and complicated. Don’t expect the typical, rugged hero or sophisticated businessman with the world at their feet; LE’s men are living in the margins— they’re in the middle of their journey, doing the best they can while searching for a connection to something bigger than themselves. With a little effort, and a lot of luck, they may actually find their happily-ever-afters.

When not writing, LE wrangles an odd assortment of jobs (six— both paid and volunteer), houseguests (including pro baseball players), family, and friends. Manifesting an odd combination of contradictory talents and traits, LE is tragically honest and personally deceptive and makes the best piecrust— ever.

Nicky and FatBoy, aka Nick and Davis dance around each other in beautiful and frustrating ways, but it's the dennisons of the bar they work at, Frission, more than the pesky closet door that Davis is behind, that truly, though inadvertantly, keep these two apart.

This was a fun and unxepected read that will keep you entertained and guessing through to the Book One conclusion. On to Book Two!

Nick is the lead bartender at a restaurant/bar. Fatboy, Davis, is a bouncer there. They've been circling each other for months. The biggest problem is Nick is gay and out. Davis is not. He's constantly worried about people seeing him and Nick and every time they are alone, someone interrupts them and the moment is gone. Add some regular customers, an entire hurling team, an Irish band and little person who is bent on causing trouble, and you've got a great story. I really enjoyed the banter between Nick and everyone. His humor and snark make for great reading. I'd classify this as a HFN since the next book continues their story.

Nick Valentine is the mixologist at a Bar/Restaurant in Murfreesboro, TN. And he HATES Valentine’s Day. Well all Holidays really it seems, but in particular Valentine’s Day and Christmas (for obvious reasons 😉 ). The run up to Valentine’s Day this year is no different than any other, with the exception of the new bouncer/head of security. Davis ‘Fatboy’ Newman is new to Frisson. He’s been eying Nick and asking to set him up with his cousin. Nick is not interested and he’s trying to figure out why the straight bouncer is so interested in him. When they make a bet and Nick isn’t quite above board, he gets out of the setup and Davis has to act as his “bitch” for a day. That day ends up being one of the best of their lives 😀 Despite the nagging from Natalie, the front of house manager, about ridiculous decorations, the cajoling by the head chef and his assistant for Nick to settle down and find a nice boyfriend, and the end of his hookup relationship with Juan, his bar-back, Nick’s not ready to make changes for just anyone.

There is a mix up with a customer who takes Nick’s phone. When Nick finally gets it back and then discovers WHO the thief was after an unexpected encounter, all hell breaks looks and Nick is MAD. Davis has some explaining to do and some groveling. And Valentine’s Day ends being not so bad after all 🙂

Post Valentine’s day, Nick is really looking forward to FINALLY getting to be alone with Davis “FatBoy” Newman – bouncer and now very much potential boyfriend. Davis is going to visit his grandmother and Nick is going to go away with him. Until he gets suckered into working and leaves Davis high and dry. This, needless to say, sets off a string of new mishaps and obstacles that keep Davis and Nick from getting their act together.

Beyond the cancelled trip and various miscommunications, there are a LOT of other distractions. The first is a crazy Irish hurling team that arrives en masse at the bar. Nick is nearly overwhelmed with the sea of humanity. It’s also the week before St. Patrick’s Day and he’s NOT looking forward to what he sees as the silly and annoying decoration and costume extravaganza that is sure to strike the manager’s fancy.

Next there is a bitter and surly little person who is all kinds of obnoxious to Nick at the bar. Little does Nick know that this guy and his friends will truly prove to be his undoing. He and his band of merry men wreak all KINDS of havoc at the bar while Nick keeps trying to play peacemaker.
Finally, we have an Irish band booked by Nick’s boss as the special entertainment for St. Patrick’s Day. Nick knows that this is going to be nothing but trouble the second he lays his eyes on the lead singer. And he couldn’t be more than right.

Poor FatBoy is along for the ride on most of this. Since we are getting the story from Nick’s POV, it’s obvious that he still really wants to try to have something with Davis, but his insecurities and his mouth tend to run away with him at times. Poor Davis is still trying to make his way to Nick, but he’s got his own issues with his family and with trying to manage Nick and his freak outs. And there’s the little issue of him being closeted – something Nick is NOT on board with for any length of time.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed this highly entertaining book. I loved to two previous books and it’s great to have them combined into this novel and revisit these characters in preparation for the “rest of the story”. I can’t help loving Nick and FatBoy. Nick is really stuck in his own head so much – can’t see for the forest for the trees as it were 😉 FatBoy we still don’t know that much about yet since this is told from Nick’s POV, but I hope we learn more since this is really just the start of what could really be something. I enjoyed getting to know all of Nick’s found family at Frisson. I love Nick’s voice but honestly there was a LOT going on in this book. Overall I still loved being in Nick’s head while he TRIES to get it right – usually falling short. Nick definitely has a lot of issues. He’s kind of a lone wolf and has trouble believing that anyone would really want to be with him. I have to say the entire dramedy around St. Patrick’s Day was pretty amusing and I loved the Irish guys – well except for one. Nick’s boss, coworkers and bar regulars provide grist for the mill and add to the wild ride. It’s obvious that they care for Nick (well maybe not Christine, even though she OWES Nick) and I really enjoyed this family and support for him. Nick is very reluctant to take their help though because he’s still dealing with feeling like he’s not worthy. Davis is trying hard to make him see that he is – that his heart is big, but that he’s not good at taking care of himself. But given Davis’s inability to be out, Nick can’t help but feel wary. They have a long way to go to anything approaching a real relationship. I really really hope they can see their way forward, but this really is just the beginning for them.

Definitely recommended and I truly cannot wait to see what happens next with these guys. I’m sure it will be entertaining and worth the wait.

2.5 stars rounding up because I didn't skim (yes the rounding up is for me).

This is a new to me author and I have to say that I loved their writing style, it's what kept me going mostly in a quite an endless story, that was going nowhere fast.

We were dropped in the middle of something, somewhere with people. No names, no places, no introductions apart from our MC thinking how FatBoy was annoying him. Can I just say how much I didn't like reading FatBoy throughout the book? How, me a large person, made me feel uncomfortable and insulted? Not that Davis aka FatBoy was any better towards Nick, who is our one and only narrator of this story, calling him Princess. But for every 100 FatBoys there was only 1 Princess. Anyways these "pet" names just didn't work for me, putting a wall between me and the story.

As annoying and insulting those were the following happened at 44%, dropping this story from 4 stars and me wanting to read the next book to NOPE:
"I want you to take a minute and use whatever God-given faculties you still possess after the no doubt debauched existence you've led to date that has skewed your perspective, and fuckin' think, Nicky. Fucking use your goddamned head for something other than a vehicle for stylin' products. I'm so pissed!" .

That was Davis reaction to Nick's question whether or not he (Davis) is married. That reaction is totally unjustifiable especially towards a person you supposed to have feelings towards! F THAT! If I was in Nick's shoes I would have flipped him off and jumped off that car. Especially since Davis is so in the closet, for a family he has no contact with, from what we've seen in the book, that Nick should be throwing him a couple of moth balls to keep pests at bay.

For a book that is 4.5k locations on my kindle I know nothing about Nick apart from the fact that he may seem as a self-confident man but really he doesn't know his self worth, is a bit damaged, his thought process resembles a pinball machine, has very little self-confidence which revolves around his job. Why he is that way we have very, Very, VERY little info on!

Frankly we know more about Davis than Nick. His father is a judge and there's elections coming up, his mother is manipulative, his cousin lives with him and he is a disaster and manipulative as well, the only good person in his family is his grandmother, he studied French Lit in college, he used to play football, he was in the military and he is in the closet and not willing, for the sake of forging a relationship with Nick, to be out at least to their coworkers, even though most of them know.

There were things in the story that didn't quite compute. Like

Anyways the story can be boiled down to Nick and Davis trying to push a thing to happen that was reluctant to go, sometimes because they sabotaged it, sometimes because of fate. I can't even say that the book ended with a HFN. There's a 2nd book but I don't think I'll be continuing because I just don't want to keep reading "FatBoy" and no matter how much chemistry these two have finishing this part of their story didn't left me with the warm and fuzzes.

I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

Book: Make Mine a Double
Series: Cocktails and Chaos# 1
Author: LE Franks
Publisher: Author
Pages: 307 pages
Release: March 17, 2021
Genre: Gay Romance
Rated: Mature

Author’s note :This material previously released under Book One & Two of the 6 Days Series (6 Days to Valentine & 6 Days To Get Lucky). series re-editing done to integrate into a single 90k+ novel.

I sometimes scare myself and it happened with this author…..I saw a new release from LE Franks on Amazon and it was book #2 of this series in August. Of course I wanted to read it, but I love a good series so had to buy both. Yes I know I fell behind, and read both the beginning of October but, just needed to say how happy I am that this happened and Thank you Amazon!

This first book is a never ending romp in the life of a young gay Bartender /Manager Nicky Valentine. If you have ever worked in the service trade, it is an open book of what can and does occur.

LE Franks drops us in to the fray of winter craziness with Valentine’s and St Patrick’s day and we are surrounded by quite a cast of characters whether they are employees or clientele.

Nicky is out and gay, the cold room may attest to his hornier moments when we find he and the bouncer Davis sniffing around each other. Slowly we start learning about the employees, the owners, the chefs and then a melee breaks out with St Patrick’s day and the Irish Team that floats in and we are never the same after that….

All I can say is Davis is hot and doesn’t deserve the name fat boy although he will have to ‘come out’ quick if he wants a chance with Nick. Crazy fun intro…..Hope they get their HEA

This book has a lot of promise as far as the storyline but I had a hard time connecting with the characters. There was little to no introduction to not only Nick and Davis but also to their developing relationship. I honestly kept waiting for a flashback chapter that would explain some of the backstory of both characters and their seemingly divisive relationship. This was an enemies-to-lovers story that did not really tell the reader why Nick and Davis were enemies to begin with.
Additionally, there were a few instances in which the characters made comments that were on the edge of hostile and toxic. One example that stood out to me was the exclamation by Nick for one of the bar patrons to "get on your meds." To me, just not necessary and very off-putting.
Overall, Make Mine a Double has some interesting characters and a compelling storyline that just need a little more. I have hopes for the rest of this series and plan to check out some other books by this author.

There were a lot of things I liked and found intriguing about this book (the author’s writing style is descriptive and easy to read, the dialog is particularly good), but the overall reading experience was a bit uneven— I found myself sort of ricocheting between “wow” and “why” with Nick and Davis. They are each interesting characters, in their own right, and they have some great chemistry, but they’re capable of doing some really odd things, at times, and they aren’t necessarily helped by the plot, which doesn’t seem to be going anywhere in particular. Sometimes they work together beautifully, sometimes not so much, but not necessarily in a way that seems to be following any kind of solid story arc. In spite of the occasional frustration, however, I’m invested in them and interested in seeing what happens to them next, which definitely counts for something.

I found that both Nick, an expert mixologist and Davis (Fatboy to Nick) head of security for the bar/restaurant they both work at took a while to get a handle one. There are a lot of characters apart from the main two to get your head around, but if you take your time and get to know all of them, they all play a part in bringing all the little parts of the background of this whole book together. Nick doesn't want to go into the closet that Davis doesn't want to leave, however, their attraction and growing feelings make it inevitable. There was a very interesting scene after what they are calling "the riot". I was concerned that the police wouldn't do due diligence in finding out that Nick actually worked for the bar before he was handcuffed, and carted off to the station and subjected to a police officer with obvious homophobic ideals with no come back. I do think this book is worth reading. “I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.”

Just didn’t keep me fully engaged.

This was a different read and I just didn’t feel connected and fully engaged with the characters or the plot and I felt that I was in a constant state of low level confusion when the narrative seemed to jump around a bit.
The story is told from Nick’s POV and I found it frustrating at times when he had angst filled monologues second guessing himself and the relationship with Davis. We are never really told why he is the way he is and so closed off.
He comes across as a bit immature and could be quite rude and downright nasty to Davis who is just a sweet and kind gentle giant. The character development could have be a lot stronger and I really didn’t feel much in the way of chemistry between them. It took a very long time for them to actually get together which lead to some low heat scenes. Their HFN was achieved after some minor dramas.

This is the first book I read from this author. Overall it has a good storyline, the approach especially at the beginning was new and a little bit confusing for me as I have always read a different style before this book. I also haven't read a lot of single POV so far.

The back and forth between the MCs were a bit redundant in that it always involves the same topic which is about sex and sexuality. Well, they both work at a club so I think that is a given, their (and our) preconceived notions of people working in this environment.

The chemistry between them is undeniable though, because time and time again, they gravitate toward each other. I guess I just found the unique approach very new to me so that there were a lot of times that I got confused along the way. But for a new author to me, this is a great introduction to her work.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. A slow romance between a bartender or mixologist as he prefers and his bouncer. Nick is out and hooks up regularly until he gets together with Davis. Then it is a long break for having sex as they keep getting interrupted and it is not helped by Davis being in the closet. Meanwhile guys keep hitting on Nick but he doesn't accept. It was an interesting look into a life working at a busy bar and restaurant. Things come to a head on St. Patrick's Day with a riot started at Frisson by a very surprising person. While in jail, Nick and Davis start getting together before being interrupted again by a lawyer patron who springs them. Nick and Davis at long last get together.

We have here the story of Nick, a bartender and Davis, a bouncer working in the same bar. They fall for each other, but Davis isn’t out and doesn’t plan to be out. The rest of the story and also the characters are like the title says chaotic. It’s a rough trip on the road of love for them.

I like the Story and also the two main characters, but there’s too much distraction from a lot of other characters. Additional as I’m not a native English speaker I had problems with the spoken = written English especially as also irish people were included in the plot.

For me it’s 3,5 stars, but it didn’t hit the 4 stars.

The author is new to me and curious as I’m I also read the second book, that was easier for me, but you can read that in the other review.

I loved this book, from the first page to the last it had me so invested with all the feels and drama you need in a romance, I couldn't hardly put it down. Nicky is a single gay, out and proud but subdued at work, working as a mixologist at a bar and restaurant, looking for his prince, kissing a lot of frogs along the way. Davis (FatBoy) the new bouncer and although he's interested in Nick, he's still in the closet. When they finially find their way together karma, insecurities, family, and unforseen circumstances keep dragging them apart, hopefully with some time, lots of patience and understanding they just might finally their way to each other.

I wouldn't say that I hated this book, but I wouldn't say I totally LOVED it either. Plot development...a bit erratic. Character development could be tightened up? I read this thinking...L.E. Franks has a great imagination but her writing skills could use a little refinement and editing. I am a fan of angst and a hard road towards a HPE, and I also enjoy banter and sarcasm. With this book, though, there were times when I I more felt like I was watching two teenage boys with stunted emotional maturity stumble through some bad karma. I gave the book 4 stars because I liked the idea of Nick and "Fatboy"--just didn't connect as much with the execution.

My review is actually three and a half stars. I’m not sure how I feel about Nick and Davis. Their somewhat hostile relationship is a bit of an enigma to me. I’m a fan of romance and a good love story, this one had a lot of potential. I did find it difficult at times to follow the storyline as it seemed to jump around. I was hopeful of the m/c’s getting together and following their journey wasn’t always easy but they did get their happiness, finally. Though it wasn’t as easy a read as some I’m glad I stuck it out.

Not Feeling It . . .

Using the nickname “FatBoy” takes me out of the story because of my reaction every time I hear it. It’s not a cute name or an affectionate name. It has connotations that could be terribly painful to someone and it’s design to hurt. As for the story line and characters, Nick and Davis are interesting characters who seem to have good chemistry, but it’s difficult to get pulled into their story because the reader doesn’t know where the plot is trying to go. Some of the comments made by the characters feel mean and hurtful. That sort of thing again pulls me away from the characters instead of making me care. This book just didn’t resonate with me.

Make Mine a Double, Cocktails & Chaos book one by L. E. Franks. I don’t believe that I’ve read anything else by this author before. This book had a fantastic storyline and I absolutely love the characters! I can’t wait to read more about them. I did have trouble a couple of times during the book. I think it happened when a lot was going on at once. It was like my brain short circuited and I couldn’t retain what I was reading. It happened a lot in the beginning of the book. I almost quit reading. That would have been a shame because I loved the story! I don’t know if it was the writing or just me, but I made it past the beginning and it only happened a couple more times. This book is definitely a must read. I can’t wait to read the next one!

DNF @ 23%.

Cocktails and Chaos is the title of the series, and that’s what was delivered.

There is more details in the bartending than any of the other eke,Mets of the story combined.

As for the chaos, the narrative definitely lacks coherency. I’m not sure what the point was of the opening scene (a few scant paragraphs), only to jump back to the previous day. And it almost reads like scenes were removed, or maybe never there in the first place.

Second attempt at LE Franks, second DNF… this author may not need three strikes

Nick was a dream and I loved it

I absolutely loved this book. I thought that Nick and Davis were a dream together as they navigated the life behind the bar.
Nick was such a snarky delight as he spoke the truth about his coworkers and guests at the bar.

He and FatBoy worked so well together even though they never caught a break.
If you want a humorous story with good fun characters who stumble as they fall in love, this one is for you!

Worst luck ever

Man the road Nick and Davis are taking to finding a relationship is definitely not an easy one. Nick is a bartender and a habitual flirt while Davis is still quite firmly in the closet. Add in some coworkers with less than stellar interpersonal skills and rowdy Irishmen and you have some serious hazards in the way. It will be interesting to see how these two manage to keep up after the shenanigans at the bar during St Patrick's Day. This is a good read.

I loved this book about Nicky, the out proud bartender, and Davis, the in the closet bouncer. If the rest of the books in this series are as good as this one, I cannot wait for more to be released. The one hits the mark for me with great characters, humor, romance, and low angst. Loved watching them become a couple. This book reminds me that the path to love is slow and persistent but so worth it. Great fun read that I read in one sitting. I did receive an ARC and leave this honest review.

This book was ok but it’s constant back
And forth between the two MCs who are supposed to be heading into a romantic relationship and it kinda sorta finally happens at the end but we have to read a whole second book for it after that uhhh no I won’t be continuing this author writing style is good and they have some good humor but I just wish this book was more sweet I wanted it because I was looking for a funny romance not what I got.

The first book following a couple as they find love

This was a very hard book to follow at times but all in all I enjoyed the story. Nicky and Davis had better secure their relationship in the next book because they are so perfect for each other. I don’t typically read HFN books so I wish it would have been mentioned that this is a continuing series about one couple but overall it was enjoyable.

Good foundation but a little bit confusing to follow through from one scenario to the next. Occasionally hard to grab my attention and made it harder to get from page one to the very end.

As for the characters, Nick and Davis had the spark but the overall story could not keep the fires stoked.
I do hope to have a better experience with future works from this author.

Nick is a mixologist extraordinaire. He is slightly broken and spends a lot of time in his head. Davis, whom he calls Fatboy is a Vet, now working as a bouncer. They do a very delicate dance backwards and keep missing each other. Does Nick know what he wants, or how to get it? Will they connect? Can Nick get out of his head? Davis is a nice guy with a lot of patience. Interesting story. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Davis is the bouncer at Frisson, and Nick the bar manager. In this book you will find drama, humor, a lot of flirting and plenty of missed opportunities. It seemed that every time these two tried to get together something happened, which ended up frustrating both of them. There are so many characters involved in this story; the angst and drama they bring to each event that happens will either make you laugh or scream.

An OK read, but I've got to admit I got tired of the back and forth between Nick and Fatboy. I never really knew where I stood with them. It was difficult to read the characters, and suss out how they really felt about one another. Things improved towards the end, however, I'd have liked more background information about Nick and Fatboy earlier in the book. Still, if won't stop me from reading the next book. I really liked Nick, and want to learn more about him.

so i feel like this has potential to go somewhere but i was so confused through most the book.. i feel like someone just parachuted me into the middle of nowhere and cant figure out where to go from there.. i have no clue who these people are or why they are.. it was odd.. but the storyline had good potential.. i will also admit some of the issues people had were ridiculous... like overly dramatic to certain questions asked.. overall i will read the next book and see if i like it better.

The dance at Frisson

Told from the point of view of Nicholas, manager and head bartender at Tennessee bar Frisson, the 25yo's active casual sex life faces change between Valentines Day and St Patrick. Particularly in his pursuit of Davis, known as FatBoy. Frank's fills the bar with a broad cast of characters and plenty of social interaction as Nicky grows wiser. A thoroughly well developed story, laced with humor and snark, and plenty of lively interactions.

The story line was good, and I liked the idea of it, but it was difficult to stay engaged at times. The book was only told from Nick's POV with long narratives and not a lot of dialogue between both MCs, so it was difficult to connect with Davis. I think a duel POV would have me connecting better.
