War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters #3

She's the One Who Gets in Fights

Rate this book
It’s the 1200’s, and the small realm of Ilari has had peace and prosperity for generations. That doesn’t mean every citizen is happy, however.

Sulphur, the third of seven sisters, is glad the older two have been slow to wed. It’s given her the freedom to train as a fighter, in hopes of fulfilling her lifelong dream of joining Ilari’s army. Then, within a matter of days, both sisters announce plans and now Sulphur is expected to find a man to marry.

Is it Sulphur’s good fortune her homeland is gripped by fear of a pending Mongol invasion? And the army is going door to door encouraging recruits? Sulphur thinks it is. But once she’s forced to kill in a small skirmish, she’s ready to rethink her career decision.

Too bad it’s too late. The invasion is coming, and Ilari needs every good soldier it has.

Once Sulphur learns Ilari’s army has made the strategic decision to not defend certain parts of the realm, including the one where her family lives, she has to re-evaluate her loyalty. Is it with the military she’s always admired? Or is it with her sisters, who are hatching a plan to defend their homeland with magic?

Everywhere she turns, someone is counting on her to fight for what’s right. But what is?

This is the third book in the War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters series. Sulphur is the third of seven sisters and always dreamed of being a soldier in their army. Her wish came true when the army looked to expand their numbers before the Mongols arrived to try and take everything from them. Sulphur’s dream of the army and the reality of it are vastly different. The politics involved as she rose in rank would have been her downfall if not for her two best friends.
As we are taken deeper into the series we see the plan for civilians working with the magical Velka become reality. Sulphur is placed in charge of the training and coordination of the civilians.
Cronin has me captivated. I cannot wait to read what happens next.

I started with this book, the third in a series of seven. I have no idea how I came across this book. It’s different from anything else I have ever read, and most enjoyable. Recommended.

This book is the third story in a series of seven sisters, but it can definitely be read on its own. Each of the sisters have a different talent, and Sulphur is a fighter. In fact, she has been her entire life. She felt it was her place to protect and defend her sisters.

The world building is remarkable. There are a lot of different words and concepts to keep straight, but the author makes it easy to keep up with everyone.

And the character. I absolutely loved her. She was definitely not a stick character, but a fully fleshed out character with faults and doubts and issues. All of these made her real and enjoyable to read about.

I’m definitely looking forward to reading the stories about the rest of the sisters and discover if they will be successful in their plan to help their country.

I received a complimentary review copy of She's the One Who Gets in Fights as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Thank you to the author for kindly sending a copy of this book, and to Goddess Fish Promotions for once again affording me the opportunity to be on the review team for the latest book in this series. My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

This is my favourite book yet in this series! Sulphur has absolutely won me over, far better than Coral was able to do in book two, and there's so much interesting action in this book that takes us to different places and into different meetings than what we saw in book one. My biggest critique of book two was that while I get this is a series of companion novels, (at least to start, I hope the story will progress beyond the cliffhanger these all end on,) Coral's side of the story is more world-building than plot development. It very much felt like a re-hash of the same snippet of the timeline as Ryalgar's story. Sulphur's story? I would almost say this book could be read as a stand-alone. Almost only because I do think we glossed over too much prior world-building lore under the assumption that the books have been read in order, and someone jumping in at this point isn't going to understand at all who the Velka is or the finer points of what sort of grand scheme Ryalgar has set in motion.

It's not just Sulphur who won me over, either. This book has the most likeable supporting cast of the series so far if you ask me. Tamara and Rooslin are awesome, Giorgi is entertaining, and I genuinely grew to like the side of Davor Sulphur sees. Don't get me wrong, the side Coral gets to know is a sleaze bag and that's still acknowledged here, but once Sulphur earns his respect and he treats her as equal and a fellow man, I like the soldier and mentor Davor presents. I guess that's a prime example of why Cronin is such a good author. Her characters are realistically complex and flawed, and she can make you love or hate any of them as she chooses. Sometimes she makes you do both.

Let's also take a moment to celebrate all of the awesome LGBTQIA+ representation in this book in particular. It has been acknowledged throughout the series so far that while non-heteronormative relationships aren't exactly celebrated and encouraged in this setting, they're accepted and tolerated or politely ignored. In this book, though, we're tossed into the military (the Svadlu) where the male to female ratio is 9 to 1. Obviously, there will be less than traditional pairings. What we end up with from the main cast is a confident woman who would probably label herself by modern standards as genderqueer and demisexual, and I'm here for it. 100%! We then have this queer/demi warrior goddess choosing to keep company with a closeted gay man and a fierce woman who occasionally seeks the affection of someone with matching parts, even if she typically prefers the opposite. And fear not, fellow readers who avoid the romance genre because of the bedroom scenes, there are only three that come close in this book and they are not at all descriptive.

I'm looking forward to finding out more about Olivine and Celestine in the next two books, respectively, as their stories have been well teased by now. I'm perhaps more eager to get further into the series, though, and spend time with Gypsum. All the rebellion and free-spiritedness will be interesting to read, and I'm SO curious to know more about the reczavy.

Do I recommend this book? Heck yes! I recommend this series to all lovers of historical fiction and fantasy. Do I think you need to read the books in order? I think you should read the first book first, and after that it probably doesn't matter as much, but I will say I think you're meant to see Davor through Coral's eyes first and I'm not sure his role in her story would land the same way on a first reading if you already respect him the way Sulphur does.

I will be continuing to read and review this series regardless of whether or not I catch future tours, though I sincerely hope I can participate in more tours for this series and I'll be keeping my eyes wide open for the opportunities. Thank you again to the author for sending a copy for this review! I'm now extremely tempted to order physical copies of the previous two books to keep this one company on my shelf.

Such a fun series. Cliffhanger because each story gives a different sister's perspective of the main event. Fascinating world-building and a great main character. Full review to follow.

“She’s the One Who Gets in Fights” by S.R. Cronin details Sulphur’s journey as she finds her purpose in life. She and her sisters get intimately involved in various ways to defend their homeland from the vicious invaders that are threatening to destroy the realm of Ilari. Her career choice makes her contemplate her values and whether she has the determination to achieve her goals.

This historical fantasy is part of the ‘War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters’ series and centers around the sister who has the fire to become a warrior, although her gender is against her, especially in a system that leans heavily on a “who you know” sponsorship structure. I love seeing how she follows her heart and finds a way to achieve the goals she wants.

This series is fascinating, because each story can be read as a stand-alone story, but provides a different perspective of the same set of events. The drawback is that the tale ends on a cliffhanger, because the final major event will undoubtedly feature all seven sisters, each of whom gets her time in the spotlight. I enjoyed seeing the actions of Sulphur’s sisters through the prism of her perspective, and there are multiple twists and turns that keep one glued to the book and anxious to keep turning the pages. I confess that I was sad to realize I had come to the end and I am impatient to learn about the rest of the sisters’ talents and accomplishments.

The world-building is intricate and intriguing, and the characters are nicely developed. I appreciated the deft descriptions of this realm’s misogyny and how Sulphur finds a way to cope, even as I ached for the thorny decisions she was faced with at times. The book is an inspirational story that is filled with action and adventure that celebrates the power of women and I think it would be enjoyed by young adults as well as those who are older. I’m looking forward to meeting another of these extraordinary sisters and seeing how she changes her world.

I enjoyed this book and found it entertaining to see the different perspectives from the main character in this book and the main character in another book in the series, "She's the One Who Thinks too Much," which I read previously. We know that different eye-witness accounts of the same accident will most likely have different versions of what happened. The author does a wonderful job of portraying that very thing. In these books, we have sisters with different interests and lives who are key in helping their country prepare to defend itself against an invasion by the Mongols. The author writes about the unique perspectives of not only the main characters, but he also focuses on the perspectives of everyone who interact with them. I enjoyed the author's depiction of this character who had always wanted to become a soldier for her country, but who then realizes that she is someone who doesn't like to kill. The author also provides insight into becoming a good soldier when the character must learn that "knowing how to fight is useful - knowing how to prevent a fight is even better." The author is a great storyteller. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

"We offer protection. We don't coerce behavior that good men and women consider cowardly in their own hearts." From She's the One Who Gets in Fights

4 stars

This was a great breif glismpse into Sulphur's life. It had great bisexual representation, and a rich world full of things that make it unique. I love the little wheel we get at the beginning of each chapter to clue you in when this is taking place because the books spans a good amount of time for such short book. I also really liked the idea of breakfast wine, and that they all seemed to have a drink for everything. It was little details like that which made the world feel real and kept me wanting to read more. I thought Sulphur's rise to the top rank happened too fast to be believable, especially after such a breif scrimmage. Also some of Sulphur's total lack of knowledge about what her sister's can do and such seems off. Other than that, it was an intriguing set up, and I can't wait to see where all of this goes.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This novel is the third volume of the series.

Just like the second volume, it tells the same story of a country preparing for a Mongol invasion but from a different point of view. This time, we follow Sulphur the third daughter of the family.

I was impatient to read this volume as I felt that Sulphur was one of the sisters that we knew the least of. Since I was scared of getting bored of reading the same story all over again, I hoped that it would all feel novel since we didn't know anything about her beforehand.

In a way, I wasn't disappointed. The plot focused on the story of the Svadlu and introduced interesting characters.

However, when compared to the other sisters, I felt that the main character was less developed and the story was in fact quite slow-paced. Her point of view was interesting though.

Seven sisters, each with a different path in life. Mom wants each to marry a prince. But, there is a future with a war coming and the entire community must prepare.
Sulphur is daughter number three. She was allowed to learn the fighting arts by her father. He didn’t understand why she wanted to fight. She was lucky to be a woman and not need to pick up a weapon. She explained her reasons for wanting to fight and asked him to help her join the army. He helped her to find a trainer. And she trained.
This is her story, third in the series about how women helped to plan the defeat of the invading forces. These stories are unique in that they run parallel with different points of view. They are awesome reads and can be read as stand alone.
I highly recommend this and all the stories in the series.

This is a stunning book.

I didn't expect to get into it as much as I did, especially given that I hadn't read any of the other books, but the author has done a wonderful job with writing in the backstories. It was seamlessly done!

Now, as to the characters. Well-developed, interesting, and relatable are the best words I can use to describe them. Even the antagonists are more than cartoon sketches, making for a more well-rounded book.

I won't go into the plot, but trust me. If you pick this book up, you won't regret it.

tl;dr: Get this book NOW.

Can you believe we're on book three already? I loved Sulphur. Her drive to fight for what she believes in, her rejection of what society considers proper for a woman, even under familial pressure. This book gives us better insight to the military during this time, all from Sulphur's POV. Sulphur isn't perfect, but watching her work through the obstacles and conundrums placed in her path made me love her so much more. I love that the characters have so much depth, and that the world is so rich. As a companion novel, this works seamlessly with the previous two, and just adds more depth to the story as a whole.

Epic Fantasy
Wow! It doesn’t take long to get drawn into this story of a strong female fighter, who just happens to be an amazing soldier. This is a tale about the effort to save their country and negotiate the pitfalls associated with men that did not treat her with the same respect as the other males. This was the third book of a series that will mesmerize you and make you want to read the other books to get the entire picture of a world under threat from an invading horde of Mongols. Want to escape into an amazing world? Then read this book!

The third book in this evolving series about 7 sisters, this one from the perspective of Sulphur, the fighter of the bunch. Set against a forthcoming Mongol invasion it follows her path in joining the military and the plans to thwart the Mongols from her standpoint. Another great story in this saga, building yet more to the overall world they live in. Strong characters as always and clever interactions between all. I look forward to the next book on the series.

This went more into the politics of the situation. Like the second story, there was a lot more friction and you see, again, how much work went on behind the scenes to make things go as smoothly as they did for Ryalgar. Sulphur is a compelling character, if a little more dense than her two older sisters. She's tough but feels deeply and, arguably, cares about others as much as Coral does, though more in a protective way. Watching her make friends and find her place was really enjoyable, as was seeing her learn to work with others to overcome obstacles.

this was another wonderful entry in the War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters series, I had enjoyed the previous two books. The story itself was wonderfully done and I was invested in what happened to the characters. It left me wanting more in this universe.

**I received an ARC from Book Sirens and am leaving this voluntary review.**
I am truly enjoying this series. Yes, they can be read individually, but each book adds more details to the events going on. And each sister's perspective changes the way you look at the story as a whole. Sulpher provides the POV of the military of Ilaria. She's on the inside of the government working to help her sisters defend their country against the attacking Mongols.

A satisfying multi-perspective female-driven fantasy series

A fast-paced female-driven fantasy series featuring distinct, well-rounded characters in a fully-realized alternative world with its own history, geography, calendar, holidays, peoples, politics and magical aspects. The most unique and interesting part of the series is that it views the same incidents from various perspectives. Each of the seven sisters has a separate enough life that you don’t see all the same events but just enough that the overlap is illuminating and gives you more insight rather than being repetitive. Each novel also moves the entire overall story forward toward what promises to be a dramatic finale. This series should definitely be read as one complete work not stand-alone novels.

Sulphur is the third of seven sisters and the next in line to get married which is the last thing she wants. Lucky for Sulphur her sister has been slow in finding a mate but that is about to change as both sisters have finally announced their intentions to marry.

Sulphur doesn’t want to get married as she wants to be a fighter. A war is coming and she wants to be a soldier in Ilari’s army to help protect the people she cares about. Sulphur has applied for entry into the army but before she can be accepted she must find someone who is willing to vouch for her and sponsor her.

Can Sulphur find someone to back her before impending doom settles over the land? Will Sulphur get to accomplish her life’s dream of being a soldier? Will she get the chance to try and help save the ones she cares about?

But then something awful happens that leaves Sulphur questioning if she has made the right decision. Secrets are revealed which leaves Sulphur once again questioning herself. Now she really doesn’t know what to do or what is right? Sulphur has a choice to make that could affect her for the rest of her life. What will she do?

She's the One Who Gets in Fights is filled with action and fighting from the very beginning that never let up from the first page to the last. I love the world that was created for the seven sisters in the War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters. I am enjoying seeing the world through each of the sister’s eyes. I like seeing their take on life and their world and seeing the part they play in it.

I like getting to know each and every character. When I was reading She's the One Who Gets in Fights I felt as if I was one of the soldiers standing beside Sulphur as she was sparring or fighting. I could see the whole world in my head as if I was on a movie set watching as each character played out their role before the cameras as well.

I love this series so much that I would highly recommend each and every book in the War Stories of the Seven Troublesome series. But I think I may be digressing here a little bit as today is Sulphur, the third sister of the seven troublesome sister’s day. Grab your copy of She's the One Who Gets in Fights today for a wonderful story!

I received this book for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. Goddess Fish tour and excerpt here.

Another great installment in this series. I love watching the story unfold from multiple angles, and the sisters are all so interesting. Sulphur is no exception. I found myself not quite understanding where she was coming from in the first two books, but this one made all clear. Sulphur emerged as a force, both on the battlefield and as a person.
The exploration of love/relationships was fascinating to watch. I won’t spoil, but Sulphur isn’t afraid to dislike something and make it known. She’s also okay with being different and not caring what people think about that difference.
I’m going to cut this short here because if I start writing too much, I’ll spoil things, and that’s the absolute last thing I want to do. Instead, I’ll just say “go read this series.” You won’t regret it. Trust me.

SHE'S THE ONE WHO GETS IN FIGHTS is the third book in the War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters series and this time, it's Sulphur's story.

Sulphur is the one who wanted to join the Svadlu and, thanks to Coral, made it. On her own merits, she rose in the ranks and became one of the Mozdol. This put her in the uncomfortable position of various groups asking her to give them information on the other groups she was associated with. What follows is an intricate and intriguing story as Sulphur finds her own path.

I love seeing how the different sisters see and act in various situations. Seeing the same thing through different eyes gives the reader a more-rounded view of the situation and Ms. Cronin does this perfectly.

The pacing of the story was just right, the world-building was as good as ever, and the character development was spot-on. A fantastic addition to the series that I absolutely recommend. I can't wait to see who comes next!
