In Where There's a Will, a short story that kicks off A Duke in Time, first in a brand-new series from Janna MacGregor, a recent widow and her despicable, late-husband's brother meet, with sparks flying almost instantly.
Prequel to A DUKE IN TIME
Katherine, Lady Meriwether Vareck, dreads attending the reading of her husband’s will, but she’s hoping she’ll at least have her dowry returned. And meet her departed husband’s half brother, the popular war hero duke, who seems to be everywhere, including her daydreams. Though the errant duke has never bothered to write or see her, Katherine decides to go to his house and introduce herself. Their first meeting shouldn’t be at a solicitor’s office, after all.
Even though he’s just returned home from the war, Christian Vareck, the Duke of Randford, is quite tired of all the ladies vying for his attention by throwing handkerchiefs his way. That is...until he catches a glimpse of her, the woman with a handkerchief in hand, walking to his front door. When she suddenly turns and leaves without introducing herself, Christian is surprisingly devastated. Determined to discover her identity, he plans to scour the streets of London until he finds her. But first, he must locate his late half brother’s missing will, then meet his late brother’s widow, too…
Janna MacGregor was born and raised in the bootheel of Missouri. She credits her darling mom for introducing her to the happily-ever-after world of romance novels. Janna writes stories where compelling and powerful heroines meet and fall in love with their equally matched heroes. She is the mother of triplets and lives in Kansas City with her very own dashing rogue, and two smug, but not surprisingly, perfect pugs. She loves to hear from readers.
This is an entertaining, well-written, historical romance novella which is the prequel to Ms. MacGregor's outstanding novel, "A Duke in Time". It is a quick read, which introduces the reader to Christian, a duke who is a war hero, and Kat, an intelligent, strong and capable female protagonist. It has a nod to Ms. MacGregor's wonderful Cavensham Heiresses series, and is a tribute to veterans. Ms. MacGregor never disappoints her readers!
Short prequel that is more of a teaser...and quite confusing toward the end. However, I do plan to immediately start book 2. Maybe it worked after all.
A prequel to A Duke In Time. A short, quick read. It was a bit fanciful in parts for me but the premise is good. Fleshed out this will probably be a good read.
Where There's a Will was a great introduction to the characters in the author's new series, The Widow Rules.
Katherine, Lady Meriwether Vareck, has been dreading the reading of her husband's will but hopes the event will at least see the return of her dowry. Not wanting to meet her late husband's brother at the solicitor's office, Katherine decides to go to the duke's home to introduce herself. But when she arrives, she finds herself more intimidated than expected about meeting the man and decides to wait after all. Christian Vareck, the Duke of Randford, has tired of the endless stream of people wanting to meet the so-called war hero duke. But when he spots a woman from his window who turns away from his door, he's surprisingly upset. Determined to dedicate his time to finding the woman, Christian needs to get his late brother's affairs in order. Including meeting the man's widow.
Where There's a Will gives us a taste of Katherine and Christian's first "meeting" which I enjoyed. I was surprised to discover through this novella that this series deals with three women who discover they were all married to the same man. I recently read and really enjoyed another book with this premise, The Unexpected Wife by Jess Michaels, so I'm hoping that will also be the case with A Duke in Time. We only get a small glimpse at the other wives at the end of this story, but I'm quite interested to learn more about them. I'm also curious to see what Christian's reaction to the news will be as we learn in this novella that they two weren't terribly close and Christian already thinks of his family as a scandal waiting to happen.
Overall Where There's a Will was an enjoyable read that wonderfully sets up the events of the first full-length book in the series, A Duke in Time. I'm looking forward to continuing the series and would recommend this novella to anyone planning to pick up A Duke in Time.
I really don't know how to write this review without giving any spoilers. Trust me, this prequel is ravishing and will make your jaw drop to the floor when you're done reading. Read it right now and go on to the next book, A Duke in Time 5 stars
Where There’s A Will is a great prelude to A Duke in Time and the rest of the books in this new series by Janna MacGregor! In just 60 pages, I’m already intrigued and ready to find out how this all turns out!
Wow! What a setup for a series, quite the jaw-dropping twist! Already engaged in the characters! I can't wait for each to find their happily ever after in the Widow Rules series!
Katherine, Lady Meriwether Vareck, dreads attending the reading of her husband Meri’s will, but she’s hoping she’ll at least have her dowry returned and meet her departed husband’s half brother, even though the errant duke has never bothered to write or see her. But first, he must locate his late half brother’s missing will, then meet his late brother’s widow, too This is a prologue to a new series & ‘sets up’ the series beautifully, we are introduced to Kat & learn how she made a life for herself after Meri left, we also meet Christian & gain an insight into his character. There are a couple of surprises & I can’t wait to read the first book in the series. I love epilogues & also love a prologue & this one whetted my appetite
What a delightful introduction to the characters we will meet when reading A Duke In Time. I loved the compassion Katharine and Christian have for the less fortunate. I hope to learn more about the other wives as well as the linen work Katharine creates and her employees. Janna MacGregor really wet my whistle for her next book!!
This is the prequel to 'A Duke in Time', a regency historical romance set in 1815 London. It's beautifully written, sent me back to the time period, and now I'm going to dive right in and read the ARC; which happily I have been gifted by the publisher and Netgalley. 😀
I found this in my Kindle after already reading and reviewing A Duke In Time, the first book in the new series, which I rated with 5 stars. This is really a prologue to that book. While it is an intro to the characters in the book to come, it is really not vital to read, but it is free, so why not?
Good lord. These 50 pages felt like an eternity. This is just a boring and repetitive setup for the actual first book in a new series. It could have been an intriguing 20-page prologue but instead was a sloppy mess.
I’m not a stickler for editing, but when the word “gaudy” is misspelled—twice, and separated by many pages—as “gawdy” (and there were plenty more editorial issues otherwise as well), that’s really a death-knell for me. As this was the second thing I tried by this author (the first being a DNF and me wanting to DNF this as well, thinking the whole time “how long can 50 pages *really* be?!)) that I hated, I will not be trying anything further.
This is a prequel to A Duke in Time, introducing us to the characters in the the Widow Rules series. Katherine, Lady Meriwether Vareck, is the widow of the brother of the Duke of Randford. Christian Vareck has just returned from the war, must find his brother's will, re-establish himself in society, and, oh yes, find the mystery lady he saw outside his window and find out why he feels a connection to her. This short preview lays the groundwork for what promises to be an amazing series. Can't wait!

When a will ‘s read leads to the shocking secret life of the late husband to be revealed ...
As time passes, I am always after my list of arcs to read, why I have alas very little moments to read outside this list. But for once, I am glad I mostly read close to release date, so I was able to read the prequel before the main novel. It is a short story setting the pace for the upcoming story. It is mostly about Katherine, the first widow and Christian, her husband’s brother. But it offers a glimpse of the two other wives. A quick and fast read which introduce Katherine, an illegitimate actress daughter trying to secure her business and Christian, a war hero and newly appointed Duke. I am happy to have read this short story, now I can jump into the main one.
Katherine, Lady Meriwether Varick's husband died within a year of their marriage. She owns a successful linen business catering to the elite by appointment only. She was surprised she hasn't received condolences from her husband's brother, Christian Varick, the Duke of Randford. Since he was at war she really couldn't blame him but now he was home he should have at least sent a note. She knew she would see him at the reading of her husband's will, but somehow her mind has judged him and not in a very charitable way.
The Duke is returning from the war and is to attend the reading of his brother's will, but first he has to find it. Apparently Meriwether said he gave it to him before he left for his commission. He wasn't expecting the spectacle awaiting him at the docks, woman waving handkerchiefs some close enough to make improper suggestions. There was only one encounter that meant anything to him though. The wife of man he served with came to greet him with their children. Their conversation was touching and brought a tear to my eye. He also gave a coin to a boy by his horses, telling him to get a gift for his mother.
The spectacle of the handkerchiefs didn't end at the docks, it was all over his lawn the next day as well. Unfortunately Katherine had decided to call upon the Duke before they were removed. At the time Christian is closed in his study with the family solicitor Mr. Hines, but he spies her from the window.
Before Katherine reaches the door, she changes her mind and decides to have that first meeting at the solicitor's.
Christian's batman now valet, Jacob Morgan, finally locates the will, in time to make the appointment at the solicitor's office.
Then all the shocks hit and the fun begins, only to be continued in the first book 'A Duke In Time', coming June 29th.
The reading of her late husband’s will is something Lady Meriwether Vareck dreads, yet she hopes it will mean the return of the two hundred pounds that was her dowry. Katherine could use the money for her linen shop.
Lord Meriwether’s half-brother, returning war hero Christian Arthur Thomas Vareck, intends to deal with the aftermath of Meri’s death. But the Duke of Randford is certain to be astonished when he discovers exactly what Meri has left behind.
Kat decides she should meet Meri’s brother before they both attend the reading of the will in the solicitor’s office, but once she reaches Rand House, she has convinced herself that she is being ridiculous and she turns away and leaves. But Christian has already caught sight of her and finds himself strangely drawn to the intriguing young woman.
What lies ahead for Kat and Christian?
Set in 1815 London, this novella serves as a prequel to “A Duke in Time” and establishes the framework for the telling of the larger tale. The plot is relatively straightforward until the revelation of the huge twist that changes everything. But the reader gains insight into the characters of both Kat and Christian as their backstories play out in this novella. And the twist makes all the difference as it leaves readers anxious to discover exactly where the larger story will take them . . . .
The unfolding narrative reveals the duplicitousness of Meriwether Vareck and leads to unexpected complications when everyone arrives at the solicitor’s office for the reading of the will. Like all good prequels, it ends on a cliffhanger and leaves the reader feeling fretful, worriedly contemplating exactly what will happen next.
Where There’s A Will by Janna MacGregor kicks off a new romance series, “The Widow Rules”. This is a short story prequel to the first book, “A Duke in Time”.
This short story lays the base for the first full length novel featuring Christian and Katherine’s story and what an intriguing base it is! I am so excited and eager to read “A Duke in Time by Janna MacGregor” now!
Go read this beautifully written and engrossing regency romance with interesting characters and an intriguing story line. Njkinny Recommends this short story to all romance lovers. 5 out of 5 super shiny stars to it.

Now with his half brother dead he has to return to London and clean up any news Meri left.
What is not counted on is having to face not one but three widows. What is a Duke to do? Will the give him grief or can be fix what Meri messed up? Will the ladies be glad or something else? Only getting their stories will we find out!
This will be good. So much to look forward too. Can't wait to read them all!
This was actually a perfect prequel/intro for A Duke in Time. I already read A Duke in Time already but really enjoyed this freebie prequel read after the fact (I actually enjoyed it more 😆). This prequel introduces all the characters that are featured in the first book & series. We meet the widowed heroine Katherine and Christian the hero, Duke and half brother of her deceased husband. I loved seeing a little backstory to all of the characters and Christian’s complicated relationship with his family and half brother Meri (the deceased husband of Kat). At the very end we also meet the two other women/widows of Meri, as book 1 follows Kat as she finds out her husband Meri was married to 3 women total.
What a delicious prequel to a book that I absolutely adored! We get to see where Kat and Christian almost meet and how fate had plans the entire time. We also get a glimpse of Meri's other wives, and the bizarre heros welcome that greeted Christian. I love it when we get more details and the inner musings of beloved characters. This is just a huge gift to us readers and I couldn't be happier. This makes me want to read A Duke In Time again because it memorably stayed with me. These characters are engaging and will pull upon your heartstrings. No one writes quite like Janna MacGregor, she's a writer that I absolutely cherish.
Christian Vareck, Duke of Randford and returning war hero, is upset with all the women throwing their handkerchiefs at him when he returns to London. He is in his study talking to his solicitor when he notices a young woman outside and wants to knock on the window to get her attention. He turns his head aside just as she looks up. She was coming to the door, then walked away. He can’t get her out of his mind. As the solicitor’s clerks are getting ready to go over the will of the duke’s half-brother, they find that the man had married three women. What would the duke say when he learned this? The clerk told him, "where there's a will, there's a way".
This was a sweet prelude to A Duke in Time that introduced the characters of the series, concentrating mostly on Kat and Christian, who are the main characters of that novel. It was a short read and revealed the benevolence of each and how they were dealing with life after Meri's passing.
I don't want to go into any details because it is a short story and to say anything would mean spoilers. Suffice it to say, even if I hadn't read A Duke in Time before reading this, I would've after. It caught my interest and reminded me why I liked Kat and Christian so much.
*The cover and title of this book is perfect for the story
I suppose I knew when I downloaded this that this was really a very short quasi novella...but I didn't remember. I have read several other books by this author, almost all of which I have enjoyed very much, so I was delighted to see this in my kindle feed. Unfortunately this is really just a taster, setting out a very complicated situation for the hero to resolve. So now I'm drooling but don't have the next book to bite into. Far be it for me to look a gift horse in the mouth - I received this for free via book bub, but still... a bit frustrating. So I will have to see about getting the next sometime soon. Which is, after all, the point of offering these freebies.
This is the prequel to A Duke in Time by Janna MacGregor. Lady Katherine Meriwether Vereck’s husband died and left a will for Katherine and also the scandal of two other widowed women her husband left behind. She plans a trip to visit her husband’s half-brother Christian Vareck, the Duke of Randford after he returns from the war hoping to get a dowry from him. Christian has no interest in women who have been swooning over him except for Katherine who has no interest in him but he is interested in her. But there is another problem for the Duke trying to find the will his brother left for him. I really enjoyed this regency historical romance short-read story.
This is a prequel to A Duke in Time, the first book in her new series The Widow Rules that comes out in a few weeks. It felt like a prequel chapter and I so wanted to turn the last page that wasn't there to get on with the story. It definitely leaves you hungry for the book. The new Duke of Ranford, Christian Vereck finally finds his younger brother Merriweather's will. The book ends at the meeting at the solicitor's office to read it. Christian, a Captain in the war has just arrived home from serving in the war. He ran off to war to avoid his scandalous family. Now he has to face his unwanted responsibilities.
I purchased a free copy of this book at both Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
Where There’s a Will by Janna MacGregor is a prequel to her new novel A Duke in Time. The Duke of Ranford went off to war knowing that if something happened to him his half brother Merriweather would become Duke, but Merriweather is dead and he’s come home from war a hero, to find his will and settle his half brothers estate. He’s on his way to his solicitor’s office with the will, but will be shocked with what he finds when he arrives……And that is why this is such a phenomenal prequel, it leaves you avidly curious to know what happens next.
