Vassal State #1

Vertus State

Rate this book
Two centuries after being captured, turned, and tortured, Mercenary finally manages to escape the clutches of his abusive lord in the north - only to fall into the court of a far more ancient and mysterious vampire lord to the south.

Unlike his tyrannical maker, the steadfast lord of Cairn-over-Merda follows a code of humanistic morality otherwise unaccepted by the rest of their unliving high-society. Won over by Lord Deutran's quiet strength and kindly disposition, Mercenary casts his lot with her retributive ambitions, breaking vampiric law... and pitching all of the Rheinland into war.

First in the Vassal State Trilogy, "Vertus State" will be available on all Kindle-enabled devices on the 15th of March, 2021.
The paperback version of "Vertus State" will be available on Amazon on the 20th of March, 2021.

Versus State

And awesome read! I truly enjoyed the story line, the protagonist and the antagonist. I’m so sorry that Sebara loses Misha in the end.

The time period in this book was really confusing - it kept referencing different years and different technologies, but those weren't available in Carin-over-Merda... and times / technologies being mentioned multiple times made me realize I don't really know what the exact time setting of this book is supposed to be. Luckily, it wasn't that big of a deal for the story, but I would still be curious for some clarification there. Other than that, I felt the story could also use some more character development / backstory for certain characters. It did pretty well for Lord Deutran and Misha, but I felt ones such as Lord Castello were lacking. Certain parts of the story also felt a little sudden, such as the main event at the end (I won't spoil it). Because of that main event... I'm not quite sure if I'm interested in continuing the series, because the rest of the book was interesting sometimes but also pretty dull at others. If my favorite part of the book is now gone... *shrugs* I'm not sure. But since I was mostly interested through most of the book, and I was a bit upset by the ending, I thought the book still deserved four stars.
