Reaching the Sun presents a beautiful blend of poems, quotes and lessons on growth and transformation from the author of the bestselling book “Bloom for Yourself.” The latest collection features bespoke illustrations depicting the journey of healing and growth, and allows for an immersive experience as you travel through the book. Each chapter focuses on the author’s personal experience of surrendering control, reconnecting with the self, and reclaiming inner power. Green’s touching narrative celebrates the reader for their strength and resilience as they journey through life, and most prominently the relationship they have with themselves. “Perfection is an idea you have in your mind of something you think will hold the key to happiness. And when you can’t seem to reach the unreachable state of perfection, you start blaming yourself, rejecting yourself, and punishing the physical parts of yourself you believe to be holding you back. You start to change, you start to run, you forget who you are, you get so lost in a storm of self-destruction that you can no longer see reality. You shrink and hide in all the dark places because you think your body, your face, your personality are letting you down. You turn to behaviours and habits that keep you from remembering that you don’t fit into the person you're so desperate to be. But you forget that you are only ever supposed to fit into the person you already are.”
A beautiful book filled with wisdom from a great human. April Green is definitely in her domain when she writes about self-healing and gives sage advice on how to bloom and "reach the sun." Her words make you think about past relationships and ways to improve your present life. There are lovely illustrations and symbolic growth throughout the book.
My least favourite of Green’s collections. It was more of a half attempt at a self help book with an odd poem thrown in rather than a collection of poetry and prose and it just wasn’t that enjoyable. Really disappointed in this one
Insightful. Just didn’t resonate with some of the others I’ve read this year. Still great for those who wish to know more about coming into their own and growing out of past relationships and toxic environments! I’ve gotten past that and was on a high from it for a while and now it’s like a calm before the depression storm so I was looking more for support and encouragement when you get there and it feels like a “now what” situation. Recs are welcome!!
I love my April Green books. There hasn’t been one yet that I haven’t enjoyed reading. I sit there in the morning with my coffee and read a couple of pages to help set me up for the day. Each poem or prose is a reminder to check my perspective and mindset, open my eyes, and enjoy the moment.
Beautiful! Blooming for yourself is a read to recenter your inner self and let it bloom. Reaching the sun is a reminder of your own self worth, your value, your identity. To never lose it or take a step back of your journey. And if you do is okay to take the path and never lose it again.
This was truly a breath of fresh air. Releasing old narratives we’ve stamped into ourselves can be quite difficult, but after this short read I feel light again.
Reading April Green's work always feels like being comforted and supported by a friend. This particular collection focused greatly on the importance of individual growth and how crucial it is to us as human beings to work on growing so that we can have a healthier relationship with ourselves, and therefore with others too. I really enjoyed reading a lot of the pieces in this book, especially since self compassion and growth is very important to me, so a lot of the author's words resonated deeply with me. Even if you're not sure about growth or where to start, these bite sized poems and prose are a great place to start to spur you on towards a healthier and vibrant self.
