A popular author of her day, she wrote over 100 novels and numerous short stories of religious and Christian fiction. Her characters were most often young female ingénues, frequently strong Christian women or those who become so within the confines of the story.
Short, very preachy story about one community's battle with the devil within their churches. Points out hypocrisy, gossip, slander, disagreement, etc. There is not much of a story here, mostly just fifty pages of preaching with a few characters thown in.
There were some things I liked about this story. I like how it illustrated the power of prayer, and I liked the devil's assistants thrown in (à la Screwtape Letters). I also enjoyed how deftly GLH incorporated the details of cooking and serving dinner into her story. It teaches good principles; it just isn't much of a story.
