There are some good pieces of this book that you can use to evaluate yourself as a leader. For instance, the chapters on creating a mind map and creating your own definition of leadership are wonderful in helping you understand yourself as a leader. Yet while these exercises are helpful, the book may not be for everyone.

If you’re prior military or a fan of history, this book will be easy for you to follow and enjoy as Antal is prior military and a historian. You might also get more out of this book if you’re new to the leadership game and need help on finding your path. However, for those of you who enjoy a flow to your sentences (not choppy statements) and the presentation of leaders from the modern day workforce then you may not like this book.

Honestly, the main issue I had with Leadership Rising was it’s disturbing lack of women mentioned in leadership roles. While leaders such as Marcus Aurelius and Benjamin Franklin got multiple references throughout the book, only a few women were noted at all and none of them for their leadership prowess. Instead, the few women mentioned were for their empathy. If you are trying to inspire the leaders of tomorrow, shouldn’t you make sure they can see themselves represented in the leaders of today?
