A new type of urban fantasy series heroine is a ghost
This book was given to me to read. I am voluntarily giving my constructive review and opinion on what I read. Constance Lore starts off the book by introducing the reader to the main character Mae- the ghost that feeds on fear. She has an attitude and doesn't take any scrap from anybody. Through the book the reader will find out Mae's backstory. While out feeding one night she sees a group of men outside the window. The leader is looking directly at her so she gives him the bird. He reacts to her so she flees because nobody is supposed to be able to see her except other ghosfae This makes Mae curious (curiosity killed the cat) she goes back to the house the next night which was a bad idea. The men are there waiting she gets knocked out and captured. She wakes up chained in another realm. When anybody looks at her they see their greatest fear. She gets beaten until she's unconscious by the Uncle and his son and their 2 henchmen. The fire fae heir shows up and puts a stop to it. Mae tells him she is dying unless she eats- her food fear he doesn't understand he gets her porridge. He starts to feed her & she is surprised to be able to eat real food. Cole the fire fae heir is the only one that actually can see her. Through the story Mae has to decide who is friend or foe and if she wants to help Cole take control of his realm. This book is the first in a brand new series that is different due to the main character being a ghost. It is Interesting and it has grabbed my attention that I want to read the next book when it comes out. I recommend this book, this new series, and this author to those who like to read urban fantasy.
I was given a free copy of this book and I decided to give it an honest review. I really loved the main character of Dark Creatures. The entire story is written in the first person, so we see everything from Mae's perspective. Mae never tries to sugar coat the past; life is hard and she did what she needed to do. Mae never tries to sugar coat the present; life is hard and she does what she needs to do. The author never tries to present Mae as a nice person and I appreciate that. Mae has total agency. If she sees something that needs to be done or she just needs to do something, then she does it. Mae doesn't ask for permission or hesitate, she acts. In some novels, the female protagonist misunderstands a situation or acts rashly, putting herself in danger, giving the hero an excuse to rescue her and then treat her like a child or an incompetent. Mae knows what she can do and it's nice seeing the heroine being competent. My only two criticisms are that Cole seems to lack depth (Everything is from Mae's point of view, we know very little about Cole, he seems like a great guy but 2 dimensional) and the questions that Mae accumulates are never answered. I am guessing these problems will be addressed in the second volume. Fortunately, for the author this book is good enough for me to wait for the second volume with anticipation.
We have a singular POV, our heroine. We follow her through a journey of finding herself, gaining power, and finding love. All while winning some amazing epic battles! There is going to be a second book coming soon and I can't wait to read it too! **I am leaving an honest and voluntary, review after having received this book for free as an ARC.**
This is a great introduction to a new Paranormal Series. There is danger, a powerful and competent heroine who takes action when necessary, and a truly sexy and dangerous male lead who captures her. Theirs is a bumpy ride and who knows where it will take them. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
I cant believe how much I loved this book!! The world and the characters the author creates is absolutely fascinating! Mae is awesome in spite of being a ghost that haunts peoples dreams. I love the Fire King and all his bonded Fae Princes. This book is filled with secrets, danger, love and sadness. I cant wait to read the next book in the series!
