Leaving Noah is a heartwarming tale of love, loss, second chances, and the power of the written word.

When a rodeo accident leaves Rock Creek Ranch shorthanded, Connie MacKay travels from South Dakota to Montana to visit her daughter and help with the neighboring ranch’s cattle roundup. Raised on a ranch and comfortable in the saddle, she is determined to help.

After decades of working ranches throughout the northwest, Noah Parker heads home to Rock Creek to stay—maybe. That all depends on the reception he gets from family. When he arrives, the last person he expects to see there is Connie.

Several months earlier at Sarah MacKay’s wedding, Noah and Connie shared a clandestine night together. Neither have seen nor spoken to the other since.

It’s been a little over a year since Connie’s husband’s death, and no matter how attracted she is to the rough stock cowboy, she can’t let herself get swept away by Noah’s charm and old-fashioned cowboy ethics. Figuring out the next chapter of her life is her priority—and one she must do alone.

Noah has baggage of his own he’s not sure he can get past, let alone heap on top of hers. He has known love, and lost love, and doesn’t want to live out the rest of his days alone. He loves her, but following Connie to South Dakota is not the answer, so he tries another tack—old fashioned love letters designed to share his story, and perhaps woo her heart.

Romance of mature couple with lots of angst and passion, low steam
I still feel warm fuzzies from the ending of this book!
Widowed Connie MacKay at 52yo is having a hard time finding herself after being married for so long and no longer being needed by her adult children. She is at a point in her life where she needs direction and change. At her daughter Sarah’s wedding, she and Noah Parker have a fling. Will anything come of it? At nearly 60yo Noah is also having an identity crisis. He is still mourning an incident which we learn at the end. Until that time, he is feeling guilty because he is having feelings for Connie. Through many events they are thrown together. Will this push along their future relationship or will it be its ending?
This book takes place over almost a year’s time which gives them many opportunities to get it right. My favorite line: Noah says, “I’ve never been good at falling in love.” Ms. James has written a book that has given me a vested interest in how it ends. Love the many characters, some newly introduced and others from previous books with their continued stories. If you like books with low steam but lots of passion and an older couple, you will want to read this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of it.

Is it possible for them to have a HEA?
This was a really good book dealing with older main characters. Both have suffered some major events and both are hurting and not sure where in life they need or want to go. It showed how close family can be when trouble hits and it shows just the attitude that many cowboys have. I have met a few slow to talk, down home manners, and dreamers. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

This is a well written book with strong characters in Connie and Noah, two older people who have past baggage, spend a memorable night together thinking they would never see each other again. It's an emotional story with family and love, moves fluidly with perfectly painted scenes and is a terrific read.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.

Really good story about being able to love again after loss. This is my first book in this series. I'm going to have to back and read the rest now.

Sometimes, a book doesn’t just tell a story—it stirs something in you. Leaving Noah wasn’t just another cowboy romance for me. It felt like a quiet, soul-deep whisper of what it means to start over, to love again when you thought that chapter was closed forever.
Connie MacKay is the kind of woman I instantly felt a kinship with—strong, self-reliant, and carrying just enough heartbreak to make you nod and say, “Yeah, I know that weight.” She’s a ranch-raised woman who's been through it—loss, change, motherhood, love—and now she’s just trying to figure out what’s next. She’s not some wide-eyed girl looking to fall headfirst. She’s cautious. Grounded. Real.
And then there’s Noah Parker. Oh, Noah. This man isn’t just a rugged cowboy with a weathered face and a lifetime of dust on his boots—he’s the kind who still believes in love letters. In putting pen to paper to bare his soul, because sometimes words are all you have when your hands can’t reach. That got me. Right in the chest.
Their story isn’t flashy or fast—it’s tender. Earned. A little raw around the edges, the way second chances usually are. They had a night that neither of them could forget, but real life—grief, grown kids, responsibilities—got in the way. I loved how Maddie James didn’t shy away from the complexity of love after loss. It’s messy. It’s hesitant. And it’s beautiful.
But those letters? That’s what did me in. Noah writes with the heart of a man who's known loneliness and doesn't want to wear it like a second skin anymore. It reminded me that sometimes love doesn’t charge in like a storm—it shows up in the mail, in the quiet moments, in the choosing of someone again and again even when the future’s uncertain.
This book made me sigh, tear up a little, and close it with a smile that was half-hope and half-homesickness—for a place like Rock Creek and a love like Noah’s.
So if you’ve ever loved, lost, and dared to believe that maybe… just maybe… there’s another chance out there for you—Leaving Noah is waiting to wrap you up in its dusty arms and remind you what real love looks like. The kind that shows up late, but right on time.

Can Noah woo Connie with heartfelt love letters or will both wind up alone? I’ve become a huge fan of western romance and later-in-life romance. Maddie James blends both in Leaving Noah and it’s a truly remarkable read. The romance is later-in-life/seasoned yet it’s filled with emotion. The descriptive narration is so well done, it felt like I was part of the story. The characters are realistic and relatable, you’ll fall for them like I did. Trust me, you won’t be able to put this romance down.

Let’s start with the descriptive narration. I’ve never been on a ranch or been around ranchers. Yet, after reading this book, I know the ins and outs of working on a ranch. Maddie James takes great care to immerse the reader in the setting she’s created. Every detail in intricately described so the reader can dive into the story. It’s impressive how all-encompassing the narration is.

The romance is an unexpected pleasure to read. Here are two characters who have loved and lost and are not sure about loving again. All the tension and insecurities are laid out in classic romance style. Yet, there’s a heartwarming twist to this romance: love letters. An older cowboy takes his time and writes letters to show how he feels. As I read this part, I teared up. You don’t see this in romance today and my romantic heart gobbled it up like candy.

If you’re a romance reader, you have to read this book. It’s incredible!

Leaving Noah by Maddie James is an entertaining quick read. The characters are wonderful and the story is engaging even without reading any of the previous books in the series. I think my favorite part is that both the main characters are over 50 which is rare.

Connie MacKay is a widow and mother of 6, including 2 sets of twin boys. She travels from her family's ranch in South Dakota to Montana for her only daughter and youngest's wedding. At the wedding with her family, she meets the intriguing Noah Parker.

Noah Parker is wandering cowboy that has worked on ranches throughout the west for decades and never seemed to want to put down roots. He was visiting his family's ranch at the time of the wedding and met the captivating Connie MacKay.

Connie and Noah meet at the wedding rehearsal party and are both immediately attracted to each other. The enjoy a some dancing and a little too much whiskey at the party followed by a tryst in Noah's hotel room. Neither one is looking for or ready for a relationship. Their story takes place slowly not seeing each other for several months at a time but thinking about the other the whole time. Noah is not much of a talker and finds he is better at putting his thoughts and feelings down in writing. He keeps a notebook in his pocket to write down his thoughts and later starts sending letters to Connie.

The story is sweet. It is a great example of unexpected second chance love giving some of us hope that we too can find it later in life.

If you want to read this book without any confusion, don't read both The Montana McKennas Boxed Set AND the Parker Ranches, Inc. Only one or the other. . The names, circumstances, and all the important stuff have been changed 3 times to my knowledge. Noah, in other books, is either gone and lost, or died an alcoholic, so I was really surprised when I saw he had his own story. I am completely confused because Buck, AKA Sam, died in a previous book; he was James/John/Jim's friend and worked on the ranch, and now he's going to Vegas because Luke/Brody, had a bull accident, who was taking care of the dude ranch with his mother Liz/Abby so why was he riding again? Putting that aside, Noah and Connie are a 50+ couple who meet during a wedding reception. They both have baggage, especially with grief, and decide to tread slowly. The description of the scenery, the smells, and the emotions are all realistic and tangible. I love the letters and the way they both push the other to make decisions; it was needed and the other consent to it grudgingly. Feel good HFN.

Leaving Noah is an amazing western romance, which has charm, some suspense and is a page turner. I thought the story to be captivating from start to finish, entertaining and an enjoyable read. I didn’t want to set this book down for a single moment because I was that hooked on the story. Leaving Noah is fantastically written, exceptionally balanced and beautifully executed by Maddie James. This is my first book I’ve read by this author and was blown away by the storyline. Leaving Noah has a marvelous plot, wonderful characters and a breathtaking ending for the main characters. The main characters of this story are Connie and Noah. The chemistry between the main characters is absolutely breathtaking and phenomenal. I loved getting to know both Connie and Noah as well as witnessing their feelings for each grow stronger as their story progresses forward. I would gladly recommend this book for anyone to checkout and give it a read. I will definitely be checking out more of this author’s work in the future.

This is a older couple romance which I enjoyed reading.
Connie has been widowed for about a year and Noah was in a long term relationship that ended when his common-law wife passes away not long after he meets Connie.
There is a lot going on with Noah that is holding him back from having a serious relationship with Connie. You don't find out what it is until near the end of the book but it doesn't affect the story in any way.
I am a sucker for stories about love stemming from letter writing whether it is with paper & pen or online through emails or chat. There is something about the freedom of putting feelings down in print where there is no pressure from facial expression, vocal interruption or time constraint.

Noah and Connie first met at her daughter's wedding. Connie had lost her husband in the last year, and she was not ready for a relationship. Noah was getting over the ending of a long term relationship. Yet they spent the night together, and then they determined it to have been a mistake. They did not see each other for several months after that. Until, the Rankins family had a medical emergency, and Connie with two of her son came from South Dakota to Montana to help with round up. They ended up having a disagreement, but Noah did send Connie some letters, which she answered. He soon ended that. They were both trying to find their new purpose in life. Would they ever find their new purposes in life and get together? A heartwarming story of family helping family and friends.

Leaving Noah (Parker Ranches, Inc., #8)
by Maddie James

I received a complimentary copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Noah, an ageing wandering cowboy, heads home to where his life began while considering the possibility that it may be time to finally lay down roots.
A year after the death of her husband, Connie contemplates her life, and if it can include another love.
Noah and Connie have already shared one night, but is that enough to pave the foundation for sharing their lives with one another?
Can they both put their past behind them and look to the future together?

I love that this story involves romance and love surrounding a mature couple for a change. Normally it revolves around young couples etc but Noah and Connie are both in their fifties. While it may be uncomfortable for some, I find it refreshing, and Maddie James has created a story that proves we are never too old for love to blossom.
Leaving Noah is such a sweet read. It took me a few pages to become involved in the storyline, but when I was, I could not put it down. The flow of how the relationship develops between Connie and Noah is smooth and well-paced. I just love everything about it.
Connie is a strong and determined woman yet not overly headstrong. Noah is just a country-loving cowboy, a little rough around the edges but his heart is definitely in the right place. Both of them need to work out their history and where their lives are heading...hopefully they can head in the same direction.

Be prepared to become entangled in their lives very quickly!

Connie and Noah both have dealt with two years of grief, not knowing where their lives will take them next and the big decisions each has to work through. They meet at her daughters wedding and find kindred spirits. The characters are realistic, determined, with real emotions and feelings. The storyline shows caring, revelations that help heal, time to grieve and find themselves, and much more. Close families were fantastic and the surprises really add to the story. Perfect ending that is heartwarming.

Older couple romance
This is part of a series, which could be read as a standalone with references to events and incidents in previous books and characters. Clean romance so whilst the story is interesting, some may find it bland because there is not heartfelt gushing.
Noah is middle aged, a loner and roamer, but guilt tripping over someone. He must now decide where to go from here and whether to put down roots. Connie is widowed and despite her large, grown and close family is looking to find herself. She is not content and needs a purpose.
This book throws everything into the mix..conflicting emotions, family crisis, covid, new baby, lost love, distant yet constant feelings.

Connie lost her husband a year ago and now she needs to think about what she wants to do with her life.
Noah needs a change in his life, but he is not sure about what to do after a tragic experience. He had a one-night stand with a beautiful woman, and he can’t stop thinking about her, but he is still not ready for a new relationship.
A book about life making us go through hard times, but also about the good things or people we can come across during life.
An emotional read.

This was a beautifully written story of loss, heartbreak, healing and second chances at love for an older couple. Connie and Noah met at her daughter’s wedding. Connie lost her husband a year ago and she was trying to find herself again. Her children were all grown and didn’t need her. Noah was a wandering cowboy and had been for years. He was dealing with personal issues himself. This was a hard book to put down. At times my heart hurt for both of them. I highly recommend reading this book.

I never knew that ranching could be so exciting. And when two 'older' ranchers are involved, it allows me to dream what my life would have been like if I was raised on a ranch instead of in the city.
On top of that, lovers coming back together after years of guilt and baggage from life, could not put this one down.
The author's descriptions were so clear that you were right there with all the characters feeling the same emotions.
Waiting to see where the next novel goes.

This is book eight in the Rock Creek Ranch series. I have never read anything by Maddie James before, OMG this was fantastic!! Connie who is a recent widow, has a one night stand with Noah a drifter cowboy. They meet up again months latter on a cattle drive, neither discuss their night together. Can either get past previous lifes baggage? Love the plot, beautiful setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more by Maddie James!!

An intriguing late-in-life romance. Connie MacKay and Noah Parker have known loss. Connie lost her husband about a year ago. Noah's loss is the side plot of this story. The budding relationship between Connie and Noah is the main plot. The story ends well.

Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Happily Ever After. Romantic. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

There seems to always be issues between people that have a one-night stand. And they are always thrown together later on. They try to fight the attraction that is obviously there but that makes for entertaining reading. This book has good characters to follow along through the twists and turns of romance and love. Like the interaction and conversations between the characters. Good read.

Noah and Connie weren’t your typical romantic couple. They were older and each had baggage to overcome. They didn’t even live in the same state. There was sparks, misunderstandings, and a heartwarming journey to their HEA. This was a well written story that I would recommend.
