وگلشتاین مترجم داستانی از بورخس را ترجمه کرده بود، اما این ترجمه به مذاق بورخس خوش نیامد و سبب شد میان‌شان نامه‌نگاری‌های جدل‌آمیزی دربگیرد. در خلال این نامه‌نگاری‌ها، وگلشتاین تازه دریافت که بورخس کیست و مقام‌اش کجاست، اما کار از کار گذشته بود و او به هر دری می‌زد، بورخس خود را نشان نمی‌داد و پاسخ نامه‌ها را نمی‌فرستاد.

Nascido em Porto Alegre e filho do também escritor Érico Verissimo, Luis Fernando Verissimo (Luís Veríssimo, na ortografia legal) é famoso por suas crônicas cheias de ironia humorística. Além de escritor, ele também é jornalista, publicitário, cartunista e tradutor. Entre suas paixões, estão a família, o time de paixão, Internacional de Porto Alegre, e o jazz sendo praticamente inseparável de seu saxofone.
Seus amigos o definem como "uma pessoa que fala escrevendo". Em público, ele é tímido e de forma alguma aparenta ser o autor de seus irreverentes textos. É considerado o escritor que mais vende livros no Brasil.

One of the most purely entertaining books I've ever read. Honestly, when I finished, I held it to my chest with a purr.

I was a bit nervous at the start. I mean, was this just going to be some guy capitalizing on the fact that Borges never wrote a novel? Saying to all the Borgesians who are a bit glum over the fact: "Hey everybody over here! I got your Borges novel! Your Borges stamped key chains! Borges coffee cozies! Going fast!"

Well the book was an homage, definitely, almost a piece of fan fiction, but an extremely respectful and astute one. The guy obviously knows Borges down to his fluids and neurons. At the end he crafts this letter written from Borges to the narrator, and the rhythms and diction are so spot on I had to go look at the publishing date to make SURE Borges hadn't participated somehow. No, he was dead by the time this book was written, and admits as much in the letter. The book was full of little touches and nods like that. This book distills and collects so much of what I love about Borges.

Okay, how's this for super clever? Borges stars as the sleuth in a very Borgesian detective story (it relies heavily on a mirror), set appropriately enough in Buenos Aires at a literary conference on Edgar Allan Poe, who a) invented the detective story and b) was a primary if not THE primary influence on Borges and c) was also the primary influence of H.P. Lovecraft, another Borges favorite. The puzzles in this book quickly move from forensics to philology, as you'd expect.

While Poe and Lovecraft definitely have their qualities, I'll admit they can be a little too pulpy for me. I think I like them best as busts in the library of Jorge Luis Borges. Herein lies one of the main pleasures of this book for me: examining those two writers through Borgesian eyes (excuse the irony there), through his love of semiotics, of misdirection, and of obscure and fantastic scholarship. The letter, mentioned above, was only one of the many ways that Verissimo exploited the meta-fictional "Is this this real or not?" possibilities of the story. The last word of the book is "verisimilitude" a word which I think, in its connotations toward both truth and the simulation of truth, captures the spirit of this book; and it makes me wonder if the universe is really so kind to have honestly named this author Verissimo.

یک جمله کلیدی دارد رمان که می‌گوید «جغرافیا سرنوشت است» و اتفاق‌ها حول‌وحوش همین عبارت پیش می‌روند و هسته اصلی داستان انگار همین است. این روزها که داریم دسته دسته جان می‌دهیم توی بیمارستان‌ها و اینترنت‌مان قرار است به زودی صیانت شود، احساس می‌کنم که این عبارت کلیدی ما هم هست. حتی اگر کمی دقیق شویم در چهره هم شاید بتوانیم رد این جمله را روی پیشانی‌های هم پیدا کنیم. بگذریم. رمان را خیلی دوست داشتم. به دلایلی نتوانستم آن متن اولیه که در ستایشش نوشته بودم را بگذارم این‌جا. فقط می‌توانم از بورخس ممنون باشم، برای این‌که حتی وقتی وارد داستانی می‌شود، جادوهای خودش را هم به آن داستان اضافه می‌کند. چون او بورخس است و دیگران فقط اورانگوتان‌هایی که تا ابد به تقلید از او می‌نویسند.

محوم. غرق شده‌ام. گرفتارم. این داستان مرا تا جایی که می‌شد اسیر خودش کرد، چه می‌شود که کسی چنین متن بدیع و پیشرویی بنویسد، چه می‌شود که این متن به دست من می‌رسد، کتابی از یک نویسنده‌ی مجنون ادبیات. چه معجون نابی بود حیف که زود تمام شد
شاید اگر بورخس، لاوکرفت و آلن پو این کتاب را می‌خواندند بسیار لذت می‌بردند

"ادای احترامی به بورخس با استفاده از خود بورخس"
یا
"پیوند زدن دم خروس به میمون"

بعنوان یک عاشق سینه چاک ادگار آلن پو ،  دیوانه ی اچ پی لاوکرافت و کسی که برای بورخس احترام بسیار قاعله؛ از خودم توقع داشتم در مقابل داستانی که ادای احترام به این سه اسطوره به حساب میاد زانو بزنم و زمین رو ببوسم. اما اونقدر که از خودم و از این کتاب انتظار داشتم تحت تاثیر قرار نگرفتم و این خیلی ناامید و ناراحتم کرده ؛ بخصوص وقتی دیدم بعضی از کتابخوان های خفنی که میشناسم به این کتاب امتیاز بالایی دادن، این ناامیدی عمیق تر شد و الان واقعا و جدن فکر میکردم اشکال پیدا کردم.
در حقیقت داستان هیچ اشکالی نداره نه از نظر تکنیکی و نه تاکتیکی. همه چیز هوشمندانه و دقیقه و سرجاشه. نبوغ خالص، شیطنت، شوخ طبعی ، اطلاعات زمینه ای فوق العاده زیاد، هیجان، ترس، پیچش داستانی و مقادیر زیادی نماد و معما ؛ چیزهایی ان که میتونن هر خواننده ای توی هر سطحی رو به جنون عشق بکشونن. اما داستان برای من با وجود اینهمه کامل بودن، تکراری بود و انگار قبلا بارها و بارها خونده بودمش.
البته بعنوان همسر سابق ادگار آلن پو بهم حق بدید این داستان ها برام تکراری باشن و زیاد هیجان زده‌ام نکنن.

متاسفانه من نه از بورخس خوندم، نه از آلن پو و نه از لاوکرفت، اما قراره که بخونم! (گر عمری باشد) این رمان کوتاه واقعا که درخشان بود. جوری نوشته شده بود که علاوه بر تکنیک درخشان و زیباش، یه کاری باهام کرد که همون لحظه که تمومش کردم دوباره از اول یه مقدارشو خوندم و کلی نکته جدید توش کشف کردم.

جذاب، درخشان و غافلگیر کننده (مخصوصا از نظر سبکی). نویسنده‌ی این رمان کوتاه که الحق دین خودش رو به بورخس و آلن پو ادا کرده. وریسیمو داستانی ماجراجویی، جنایی و کارآگاهی خلق کرده که یکی از عاملین حل ماجرا، خود بورخسه! داستان آکنده است از اطلاعات ادبی و تاریخی مختلف در مورد ادبیات، به خصوص ادبیات کهن و قدیمی، که هر خوره کتابی رو به وجد میاره. اتفاقات اصلی داستان هم در زمان برگزاری کنفرانسی در مورد آلن پو صورت میگیره که پای لاوکرفت و علوم خفیه و زبان ازلی و... توش باز میشه. پایان بندی کتاب فوق العاده است و دلیل 5 دادن من بهش همینه؛ که اگه میشد از 5 به پایانش 6 میدادم! حقیقتا که خستگی‌مو در کرد. برای این حجم از کتاب، یکی از بهترین داستان هایی بود که خوندم.

Καταπληκτικό αστυνομικό διήγημα το οποίο περιστρέφεται γύρω από τους αγαπημένους Μπόρχες, Πόε αλλά και τον Λάβκραφτ.

Όσοι είναι εξοικειωμένοι με τους παραπάνω συγγραφείς θα απολαύσουν το πανέξυπνο αυτό διήγημα λίγο παραπάνω...

Ο καθηγητής Φόγκελστέιν καλείται να λύσει το μυστήριο μιας δολοφονίας με την βοήθεια του Μπόρχες... Η ιστορία είναι κλασικό δείγμα μυστηρίου "κλειστού δωματίου" με έξυπνη πλοκή και αναπάντεχο τέλος... 3 μαχαίρια, ένας καθρέφτης και ένας Βαλές χωρίς μάτια είναι τα στοιχεία που θα δώσουν την λύση αλλά και θα ταξιδέψουν τον αναγνώστη στα δαιδαλώδη μονοπάτια και τις μυθοπλασίες του Μπόρχες!!!

Απολαυστικό καλοκαιρινό ανάγνωσμα και 5/5 αστεράκια...

دلچسب بود.
از بیرون، این یه کتاب به سبک داستانهای کاراگاهیِ locked room هست اما رهیافت نویسنده برای کشف قاتل یه پروسه پلیسی نیست، یه آنالیز ادبیه/اسطوره ایه. این باعث شده کتاب تبدیل به اثری متافیکشنال بشه و رفرنس‌ها و ایستر اِگ‌های کتاب از حالت فن سرویس فراتر برن و تبدیل بشن به ابزاری برای پیشبرد فرامتن داستان.
ترجیح میدادم از هزارتوهای بورخسی بیشتر استفاده میکرد.

The sort of novel that can be described as "fizzing," that induces a sense of effervescence thanks to affable playful clever intelligence. It's a literary murder mystery animating Borges and often referencing Poe and Lovecraft, in league to a degree with Cynthia Ozick's The Messiah of Stockholm, which reanimates Bruno Schulz. Also the sort of magical novel I read a few pages of and then find myself somehow reading something totally different on my phone. How does it do that? It triggers something that I search and then ten minutes pass and I'm like oh yeah I wanted to at least finish this section of the book. Which is why this short novel took me so long to finish -- it's not particularly dense, I just often found myself reading something else when I intended to read it. I'm sure a few dedicated concentrated reading sessions with technological gadgetry locked away would've improved my engagement and experience. Maybe another time. A case of not quite the right book at not quite the right time.

Okay you guys who've been pushing all those "bizarro" novels: take your favorite bizarro author, and Jorge Luis Borges will totally drink his milkshake. Even as a fictional character.

Borges wrote what's called "magical realism" nowadays, but while his fans may think "fantasy" is too undignified a label, Borges himself was a huge fan of science fiction, fantasy, and pulp fiction. The murder takes place at the Israfel Society Conference (Edgar Allen Poe was one of Borges's favorites), so you have Borges (a real person) fictionally attending a fictional conference studying a real author whom Borges really numbered among his influences. This book is a tribute to Borges and Borges's fiction, and Verissimo actually has the cajones to use Borges as a character in his Borges homage. In fact, the narrator is an author, addressing his narrative to Borges, and in the end, Borges answers back.

Under all this meta-fiction, the book is a locked-room murder mystery (with an unreliable narrator, another Poe element), and you can read it on that level, but you won't come close to appreciating it unless you've read a few of Borges's short stories.

Brazilian author Luis Fernando Verissimo totally nails the feel of a Borges story, and while this is a novel (Borges famously only ever wrote short stories; he wrote no novels), it's a short one, which also makes it more believable as what could have been just a really long short story by Borges. Since Borges writes the ending (... just read it) you might find yourself repeatedly checking the cover to remind yourself who the author really is.

If you haven't read anything by Borges, you are missing a treat. Go read Labyrinths or Ficciones. Then read this book. Then read some Poe or Lovecraft. Not necessarily in that order.

«اورانگوتان‌های ابدی» می‌تونه بشدت جذاب باشه طوری که کتاب و بگیرید دستتون و وقتی زمین بزاریدش که دیگه کتاب
تموم شده…
برای من دقیقا همین اتفاق افتاد!

این کتاب به شرطی میچسبه که عاشق بورخس باشید …

انقدر سریع کتاب و خوندم وقت نشد اپدیت‌ها رو بزارم، امروز همشون و نوشتم تا اینجا زیر این ریویو خونده بشن…



خورخه، دارم به نصیحتی گوش می‌کنم که لحظه‌ی خداحافظی به من گفتی: « بنویس، و به یاد خواهی آورد.»



مجادلات روشن فکری معمولا مثل جنگ سگ‌های بی‌دندان است، پارس‌کردن‌های آسیبی می‌زند، نه گازگرفتن‌ها.



در نخستین دیدار گفتی که سعی می‌کنی کتابی، رساله‌ی واپسینِ آینه‌ها را املا کنی. من پرسیدم چرا «واپسین» و تو گفتی که برای آدمی به سن و سال تو معقول است که برای آخرین بار، هرچه را انجام داده است جمع بندی کند.



پرسیدم آیا صحت دارد که پلیس هرازگاهی برای حل پرونده‌ای از بورخس مشورت می‌گیرد، چرا که او متخصص رمزنگاری و کشف رازها و معماهای پیچیده است. با این حال، کوئروو، بدون ذره‌ای لبخند، گفت که بله، آن‌ها برای حل بعضی پرونده‌های پیچیده از تو یاری گرفته‌اند و مشارکت تو همیشه سودمند بوده.



برای سرنوشته‌ی داستان جمله‌ای از آورده بودم، در این باره که کیفیت‌های پدرانه و آینه‌ها به یک میزان ناشایست‌اند، زیرا هر دو بر شمار مردان می‌افزایند.



راه حل‌ها همیشه در کتابخانه‌ها پیدا می‌شوند.


ما می‌نویسم تا به خاطر بیاوریم.


هیچ چیزی اتفاقی نیست، هرچیزی پیامی دارد.



ناگهان پیرزن بومیِ سیاه پوش از دل تاریکی پیرامون مان بیرون آمد و پیامی از سوی بانوی خانه به تو داد. بورخس باید استراحت می‌کرد. بازوان‌ات را گشودی و با خنده گفتی «دستور از بالاست، باید اطاعت کنیم.»



همیشه معتقد بودم که اگر کسی می‌خواهد نویسنده‌ی بزرگی شود، باید سابقه‌ی زندگی دریایی داشته باشد، به همین خاطر است که کنراد و ملویل و به طریقی استیونسن که روزهای آخر عمرش را در دریاهای جنوب گذراند، از همه‌ی ما بهتر بودند، وگلشتاین. در دریا، نویسنده از دست دیوهای کوچک می‌گریزد و تنها رویاروی دیوهای بزرگ قرار می‌گیرد.
یکی از شخصیت‌های کنراد می‌گوید از بندرها واهمه دارد، چون در بندرها کشتی‌ها می‌پوسند و مردها به پابوس شیطان می‌روند. منظورش شیاطین از هم گسیختگی و زندگی خانوادگی است، شیاطین کوچک کره خاکی. اما من فکر می‌کنم که اگر نویسنده‌ای «تراش» را تجربه کند، مثل این است که به دریا رفته باشد و به شکلی تماشایی، قفل و زنجیر انفال خود را می‌شکند، دوری‌اش از مسائل بنیادین جهان را از میان بردارد.
«منظورت این است که اگر نویسنده‌ای سه ضربه چاقو به کسی بزند، می‌تواند ادعا کند که این کار را کرده تا سبک خودش را بهتر کند؟»
یک چیزی در همین مایه‌ها. جذب تجربه و حال و هوای پیرامون.


مسیحیت متعلق است به تاریخ خرافه‌های یهودی.

این کتاب مرا به یادِ فیلم (( چشمان آبی پریده‌رنگ)) می‌‌اندازد‌. در آن‌جا کارآگاه یعنی کریستین بِل و پو همراه هم می‌شوند تا قاتل را پیدا کنند. و سرآخر قاتل همین کارآگاه از آب در‌می‌آید. این ایده برایم بسیار دم‌دستی و نخ‌نماست که راوی خود قاتل است.

من و خیلی‌های دیگر عاشق خورخه لوئیس بورخس هستیم.
به‌شخصه کتاب یا مقاله‌ای نیست که در آن نشانی از بورخس باشد و کنجکاوی مرا برنیانگیزد و مرا مجبور نکند که آن را تهیه کنم و بخوانم.
کتاب «بورخس و اورانگوتان‌های ابدی» هم از این قاعده مستثنا نبود.
یک نویسنده برزیلی که شیفته بورخس است داستانی جنایی نوشته که بورخس یکی از شخصیتهای اصلی آن است.
داستان به‌مانند نوشته‌های خود بورخس ساختاری لابیرنت‌گون یا هزارتومانند دارد، در واقع یک داستان وفادارانه به سبک بورخس و علایق ادبی و غیرادبیش (مانند اسطوره، نشانه شناسی و ...). و انصافاً نویسنده شرمنده مراد خود نشده و داستانی قابل قبول ارائه کرده است.
رمان «بورخس و اورانگوتان‌های ابدی» ساختار بدیعی دارد. لوئیس فرناندو وریسیمو نویسنده برزیلی رمان، نویسنده و مترجمی برزیلی و آلمانی‌الاصل به نام وگلشتاین را خلق می‌کند که او هم شیفته بورخس است و داستانی از او را در جوانی ترجمه کرده و چیزی بر داستان افزوده که نویسنده آرژانتینیِ معروف را خوش نیامده است، بعد از این قضیه او به بورخس نامه‌های زیادی می‌نویسد که همگی بی‌جواب می‌ماند تا اینکه بیست و پنج سال بعد از ترجمه آن داستان در جریان نشستی درباره آثار ادگار آلن پو (از بنیان‌گذاران ادبیات جنایی) در بوینس آیرس با نویسنده محبوبش بورخس روبرو می‌شود، و به‌واسطه قتلی که در یکی از روزهای این نشست رخ می‌دهد، رابطه صمیمانه‌تری با او پیدا می کند و با همدیگر به حل معماهای این جنایت می‌پردازند.
رمان هفت فصل دارد. وریسیمو در پنج فصل اول از زبان وگلشتاین به شرح وقایع می‌پردازد در فصل بسیار کوتاهِ شش با نامه‌ای از وگلشتاین به بورخس روبروییم که در آن از نویسنده محبوبش می‌خواهد که او فصل آخر را بنویسد، فصلی که معماها در آن حل می‌شود و نتیجه‌گیری نهایی انجام می‌پذیرد فصلی که بسیار خوب و شگفت‌انگیز نوشته شده است. وریسیمو به‌خوبی توانسته در قالب بورخس فرو برود و داستانش را به پایان برساند.
و طنز قضیه این است که آیا این رمان داستانی‌ست به قلم وگلشتاین و بورخس یا داستانی‌ست نوشته وریسیمو با شخصیت‌های وگلشتاین و بورخس؟ اصلا قتلی رخ داده است؟ نشستی درباره آلن‌پو برگزار شده است یا نه؟
و این یعنی همان ساختار هزارتومانندِ بورخسی که وریسیمو به‌خوبی از پسش برآمده.
ولی نمی دانم که من به‌عنوان یک بورخس‌دوستِ دیگر در معرفی این رمان موفق عمل کردم یا نه؟ :)

তাজ্জব এক গল্প ফেঁদেছেন ব্রাজিলের লেখক লুইস ফের্নান্দো ভেরিসিমো।

ভোগেলস্টেইন একজন অনুবাদক। মাঝবয়েসী ব্যাচেলর, ব্রাজিলিয়ান ইহুদি। সেই ছোটবেলায় নাৎসিদের তাড়া খেয়ে জার্মানি থেকে পালিয়ে এসেছিল ব্রাজিলে, আর বিয়ে-থা করেনি। বই নিয়ে কারবার, বই নিয়েই দিন-গুজরান। বোর্হেসের একনিষ্ঠ ভক্ত - ওর ছোটগল্পের অনুবাদ করে বোর্হেসের বিরাগভাজনও হয়েছিল বিগত যৌবনে। সোজা চলে গিয়েছিল বুয়েনোস আইরেসে, বোর্হেসের কাছে সামনাসামনি মাফ চাইতে, কিন্তু অন্ধ বুড়ো ধরা দেননি, দেখা করতে চাননি। পরে অনেক চিঠি লিখেও কাজ হয়নি।

যাই হোক, আজ এত বছর পরে আবার বুয়েনোস আইরেস যাওয়ার সুযোগ। এডগার অ্যালান পো-র ভক্ত-অনুরক্তদের বাৎসরিক সম্মেলন অনুষ্ঠিত হয় স্টকহোম বা বাল্টিমোর বা ��্রাগে। কিন্তু কোন এক অজ্ঞাত কারণে এই বছর বুয়েনোস আইরেসে স্থানান্তর হয়েছে "ইস্রাফিল সোসাইটি"-র কনফারেন্স। তাতে নিমন্ত্রণ পেয়েছে ভোগেলস্টেইন - এবং কনফারেন্স শুরু হবার আগেই নৈশকালীন পানাহারে দেখা হয়ে গেল সাক্ষাৎ দেবতার সাথে। মেটাফিকশনের জিনিয়াস, বৃদ্ধ হোর্হে লুইস বোর্হেস।

এতদূর ঠিকঠাক ছিল। কিন্তু সে রাতেই হোটেল রুমে নির্মমভাবে খুন হলো জার্মান বিশেষজ্ঞ রোটকোফ। মরার আগে শেষ ফোন কল দিয়ে গেল ভোগেলস্টেইনের কাছে - কিন্তু রক্তাক্ত ঘড়ঘড়ে গলায় কি বলতে চেয়েছিল বুঝতে পারেনি ভোগেলস্টেইন।

কে খুনি? রোটকোফ-এর মত মানুষের তো শত্রুর অভাব নেই। ঘাতক কি অলিভার জনসন? মার্কিন পো-বিশেষজ্ঞ, বিংশ শতকের হরর এবং অকাল্ট সাহিত্যের কান্ডারি এইচ পি লাভক্র্যাফট-এর উপর পো-এর সম্ভাব্য প্রভাব নিয়ে গবেষণা করেছেন। কিন্তু রোটকোফ বিনা বাক্যে বাতিল করে দিয়েছিলেন জনসনের থিওরিকে। অকথ্য গালি-গালাজও করেছিলেন। এদিকে আরেক গবেষক আর্জেন্টিনার উরকিসা-র সাথেও তার দা-কুমড়া সম্পর্ক। কম সে কম তিনটি ছুড়ি পাওয়া গেছে হোটেলে - সম্ভাব্য খুনিও তাহলে তিনজন। জনসন? নাকি উরকিসা? নাকি জাপানি স্কলার মিরো?

রহস্য সুরাহার লক্ষ্যে নেমে পড়েন ভোগেলস্টেইন, বোর্হেস এবং কুয়ের্ভো। বুয়েনোস আইরেসে বোর্হেসের বাড়ির বিখ্যাত লাইব্রেরির (The Library of Babel???) আরাম-কেদারায় বসে তারা আলোচনা করেন জীবন, সাহিত্য, ধর্ম, দর্শন ইত্যাকার নানাবিধ জটিল বিষয় নিয়ে। ইহুদি কাব্বালা থেকে শুরু করে নেক্রোনোমিকন, মধ্যযুগের জাদুকর ডক্টর ডী থেকে বোহেমিয়ার উন্মাদ রাজা রুডলফ। কিন্তু রহস্যের তো কিনারা করতে হবে... কিশোর পাশার মতই নিরন্তর নিচের ঠোঁটে চিমটি কাটেন চিন্তামগ্ন বোর্হেস... আমাদের ভোগেলস্টেইনের অন্ধ পথপ্রদর্শক।

ভেরিসিমো-র গল্পটিকে সিরিয়াসলি নেবার উপায় নেই, কারন একটি উত্তরাধুনিক কৌতুক, এক ধরণের ইন্টেলেকচুয়াল এবং ইন্টারটেক্সচুয়াল ক্রীড়া হিসেবেই তিনি এই কাহিনী সাজিয়েছেন। পাঠের বেলায়ও সেই হালকা মেজাজই প্রযোজ্য। শিরোনাম থেকে বোঝা যায় - বোর্হেসের সাহিত্যের প্রতি ভেরিসিমো-র যে অপার ভালোবাসা (এবং অগাধ জ্ঞান), তারই বহি:প্রকাশ হিসেবে এই ট্রিবিউট গ্রন্থ বা homage।

তবে হ্যাঁ - একটুখানি বোর্হেস বা পো পড়া না থাকলে বইয়ের সম্পূর্ণ রসাস্বাদন করা সম্ভব নয়। ভুতুড়ে রহস্য সাহিত্যের অন্যতম পথিকৃৎ এডগার অ্যালান পো, সেই ছোটবেলায় পড়েছিলাম তার ছোটগল্প - রু মর্গের হত্যাকান্ড। বলা হয়, পশ্চিমা সাহিত্যের সর্বপ্রথম ডিটেকটিভ গল্প। একটা বন্ধ ঘরে সংঘটিত হয়েছে জোড়া খুন - বর্বর হিংস্রতায় খুলি থেকে ছিঁড়ে ফেলা হয়েছে চুল... কে এই পাশবিক খুনি? যারা পড়েননি, তাদের জন্যে উত্তর ভেরিসিমোর বইয়ের শিরোনামের দ্বিতীয় অংশে।

বোর্হেস বা পো-এর সমকক্ষ লেখক না হলেও বোর্হেসীয় ঘরানার সাহিত্যের প্রতি যথেষ্ঠ সুবিচার করেছেন ভেরিসিমো। নির্মল টাইমপাসের জন্যে, সাহিত্যের নির্জলা আনন্দের জন্যে বইটি চেখে দেখতেই পারেন পাঠক।

It's a very funny, entertaining, and refreshing whodunit, with more than passing references to Borges (a major character here), Poe, and Lovecraft. Vogelstein is a 50-year old translator and English teacher who adored Borges with the same fanatical zeal as the narrator of the Borges story "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote." His first "encounter" with the master was not agreeable: Vogelstein translated one of Borges's stories for a Portuguese magazine but he changed some aspects of the story to fit his own preference for how the story should proceed. Of course, Borges, upon learning of the travesty, was furious. They eventually exchanged letters, which was the start of Vogelstein's literary hero worship.

Their second encounter was face to face, in a conference about Edgar Allan Poe held in Buenos Aires. But even before the conference was to start, a murder of one of the speakers took place. The murder victim was found, in true Borgesian fashion, in front of a mirror – his body's position was such that it formed a letter from the alphabet, a clue that could point to the solution of the crime. Borges and Vogelstein were enlisted to help uncover the identity of the killer. The ensuing investigation was a riot of literary speculations, invoking the mystery stories of Poe, the Kabbalah, Necronomicon book of the dead, et cetera. This novel was criminally funny. I'm sure there were some in-jokes (Borgian, Poe-ic, Lovecrafty) that went past me, but it was altogether a solid detective work, if a bit too neat the way it all tied up, in a postmodern postmortem, in the end. Verissimo was nonetheless guilty of leading the reader into a maze of intertextual pleasures. There's a chance that a fan of Borges or Poe or Lovecraft will revel in the games and gimmickry of the Brazilian writer Luis Fernando Verissimo.

The short novel was translated by Margaret Jull Costa who was probably in top form the way she came up with words to describe the murder weapon:

You mentioned that Palermo, the part of Buenos Aires where you were brought up, had been a violent place full of bohemians and bandits. There they had two names for the knife, "the blade" and "the slicer". The two names described the same object, but "the blade" was the thing itself, and "the slicer" its function. "The blade" could fit in the hand even of a sickly child shut up in his father's library, "the blade" could be any of the superannuated daggers and swords belonging to his warrior grandfather or great-grandfather and displayed on the walls of his house, but "the slicer", the knife in the hand slicing back and forth, in and out, existed only in his imagination, in a fascinating world of rapid settlings of accounts and duels over honour, an insult or a woman, in dark streets where you never went, where no writer went, except in the literature he wrote.

Whether it's "the knife" (instrument) or "the blade" (form) or "the slicer" (function), the essence of light and dark comedy here cuts through like any sharp object.

Borges? Lovecraft? Poe?... Luis Fernando Verissimo'nun eseri kısa olmasına rağmen çok güzel kesişimler, gizemler taşıyor. 101 Sayfa hiç beklemediğim git gellerden oluşuyor. Anlatısını, dilini, dinemiklerini çok beğendim. Bu noktada özgün seçimleri ve basımlarını beğeniyle takip ettiğim Monokl Yayınevi'ne de teşekkür etmeliyim. Polisiye, gerilim, gizem arıyorsanız "Borges ve Sonsuz Orangutanlar" kısa ve çok güzel bir okumaya çağırıyor sizi. Fiyatının da son derece uygun olduğunu eklemeliyim.

Our story opens with Vogelstein, a Brazilian writer and translator, who is making arrangements to travel to Buenos Aires to attend a symposium in honor of Edgar Allan Poe's work.

The first-person narrative is addressed to Jorge Luis Borges, Vogelstein's literary idol. (He even named his cat El Aleph...) and he shares his surprise to finally meet Borges, at the conference's cocktail hour. All the scholars jockey to get JLB's attention, yet Vogelstein manages to sustain it and get a personal invitation to visit Borges at his home library.

The story jumps into a literary murder mystery - who killed the Poe literary scholar at the conference?? And Vogelstein's wildest dreams come true when Borges "takes the case" and enlists his help to solve the crime. Ciphers, codes, and a lot of allusions to Borges, Poe, Lovecraft's short stories and all sorts of other intellectual pathways and tangents, and then a surprise ending...

Rollicking good time for bibliophiles, mystery lovers, and Borges fans. In other words, I absolutely loved it! So much, in fact, that I immediately bought the other Verissimo translation from New Directions, The Club of Angels (2002).

Got a real kick out of this quote from Vogelstein's perspective as to why he never got married:
"I had always thought of a permanent domestic commitment to any woman (other than Aunt Raquel) as an intellectual threat. Not that another woman would steal my soul, but she would fatally interfere with the organization of my books..." 😄

A complete & utter delight of a book. A Borges style mystery with some Poe, Lovecraft, infinite monkeys, & surrealism thrown in. Verissimo (meaning 'true' in Portuguese) leads you through a labyrinth of mirrors, philosophy, surrealist reasoning, ancient history, & good old-fashioned noir while spinning this marvelous mystery as you search for the truth of the matter. Excellent.

Borges, Poe and Lovecraft, gathered by Verissimo, in a most surprising mystery novel. I really liked it.

This was an odd book. It was a murder mystery, but a lot of time was spent talking about origins of letters and theories about random things. I had a difficult time understanding a lot of it, so I didn't get as much out of the story. The main character Volgelstein, is telling the story to Borges, the reader. He goes to Buenos Aires for a conference and a much loathed man is murdered there. He then speculates with Borges who the killer is and what the symbolism left behind can be interpreted as. The ending was kind of interesting, but I was lost most of the time.

Ένα μικρό, συμπαθητικό και ευχάριστο μυθιστόρημα που διαβάζεται μονοκοπανιά σε δυο-τρεις ώρες το πολύ. Η όλη ιστορία διαδραματίζεται κατά την διάρκεια του ετήσιου συνεδρίου της Israfel Society, στο οποίο μαζεύονται διάφοροι ειδικοί για τον συγγραφέα Έντγκαρ Άλαν Πόε και αναλύουν και συζητούν το μεγάλο του έργο. Αυτή τη φορά, προς έκπληξη όλων, το συνέδριο θα διοργανωθεί στο Μπουένος Άιρες, και έτσι, ο αφηγητής της ιστορίας, ο μοναχικός μεσήλικας Φολγκεστάιν, θα ταξιδέψει από το Πόρτο Αλέγκρε για να συμμετάσχει στο συνέδριο. Εκεί θα έχει την ευκαιρία να συναντηθεί από κοντά με τον μεγάλο και τρανό Χόρχε Λουίς Μπόρχες, με τον οποίο έχει ένα παρελθόν λόγω κάποιας ανταλλαγής γραμμάτων. Όμως ένας φόνος, αυτός του αντιπαθητικού Γερμανού Ρότκοπφ, θα αλλάξει τα πλάνα των διοργανωτών. Ο Φολγκεστάιν θα είναι ο πρώτος που θα βρεθεί στον τόπο του εγκλήματος, στον οποίο θα ανακαλύψει κάποια κρυφά μηνύματα που πιθανόν άφησε ο κρυπτογράφος Ρότκοπφ πριν πεθάνει. Μαζί με τον Μπόρχες, θα προσπαθήσουν να αποκωδικοποιήσουν τα διάφορα μηνύματα και να βρουν ποιος έκανε τον φόνο. Θα γίνουν μπόλικες αναφορές στο έργο του Πόε, αλλά και του Λάβκραφτ, θα ασχοληθούν με τον μυστηριώδη μαθηματικό/αστρονόμο/αστρολόγο/γεωγράφο/αλχημιστή/αποκρυφιστή Τζον Ντι και τους "αιώνιους ουραγκοτάγκους" του, την Καμπάλα και διάφορες άλλες θεωρίες.

Πρόκειται για μια κλασική "μπορχεσιανή" ιστορία με κρυφούς κώδικες. Το τέλος θα είναι σίγουρα ανατρεπτικό. Δεν του βάζω μεγαλύτερο βαθμό γιατί δεν ευχαριστήθηκα ιδιαίτερα όλες τις αναφορές σε Πόε, Λάβκραφτ και Μπόρχες, γιατί πολύ απλά δεν έχω διαβάσει και πολλά πράγματα από το τεράστιο έργο τους.
Σίγουρα η γραφή είναι πάρα πολύ καλή και το στιλ αφήγησης πρωτότυπο. Μπορείτε να βρείτε το βιβλίο με ένα τάλιρο και κάτι ψιλά στην Πολιτεία.

Ένα παράξενο βιβλιαράκι, γραμμένο στο δεύτερο πρόσωπο (πιθανόν το πρώτο βιβλίο γραμμένο στο δεύτερο πρόσωπο που διαβάζω). Είναι σίγουρα αστυνομικό, αλλά ανακατεύει τον Πόε, το Μπόρχες, το Λάβκραφτ και μια ολόκληρη σημειολογία σχετικά με τους τρεις αυτούς στα όρια της ερωτικής μονομανίας. Η ιδέα είναι έξυπνη και στέκεται μέσα στον κυκεώνα των υποθέσεων που κάνουν οι λογοτεχνικοί ντετέκτιβ. Η γραφή είναι σπιρτόζικη, γεμάτη με πνεύμα, και αυτά που περιγράφονται μπορεί να μην είναι κραυγαλέα ανατριχιαστικά, αλλά σε κάνουν να σαλεύεις στην καρέκλα σου. Το τέλος είναι ταυτόχρονα αιωρούμενο και καταληκτικό, με την έννοια ότι ξέρεις ότι η υπόθεση λύθηκε, αλλά δεν ξέρεις αν είναι στ' αλήθεια αυτή η υπόθεση που διάβασες, ή αυτό το τέλος της.

Γενικά σε κάνει να εκτιμάς και το συγγραφέα και την επιλογή της φόρμας του και κυρίως να μη μπουκώνεις από το πειραματικό του ύφος. Πάει να πει, μπορεί όντως να πειραματιζόταν με το ύφος του, αλλά στο σερβίρει σαν κάτι εύκολο, κάτι που το κατέχει.

Θα το πρότεινα σε όλους, κυρίως γιατί είναι ευχάριστο στην ανάγνωση, με δράση και φιλοσοφία μπλεγμένες ταυτόχρονα.
