Thai island girl Thanikarn's chances of meeting a good Thai man were limited … and foreigners couldn't be trusted. On the Thai island of Koh Samui, Thanikarn, a masseuse with traditional values, has never fallen in love – until she meets Lucas, a dashing French American musician, ten years her junior. After a brief and passionate affair, Lucas returns home and Thanikarn doubts she'll ever see him again. But Lucas leaves Thanikarn with more than just memories, including a song that he composes and records for her. While Thanikarn bravely navigates adulthood alone, making life choices, moving to the island of Phuket and developing new friendships, she is unaware that Lucas' singing career is taking off. Will Thanikarn find out what has become of Lucas? Will their lives ever cross again? Only unforeseen events and the gift of a song will decide.
If you grew up watching & loving Winter Sonata & Autumn In My Heart, YOU GOTTA PICK THIS BOOK UP!!
Thanikarn, wanted to be a lawyer growing up but her father’s death became a turning point in her life. With only high sch edu, she got a job as masseuse. There, she met Lucas, a French boy visiting Koh Samui with his family. They grew closer, rode around the island, mesmerised by the beauty & culture & ofc, fell in love.. 2 weeks of holiday ended and Lucas is now back in Paris, while Karn found out she’s pregnant. The story then followed Karn’s life as a single mother & Lucas wanting to pursue his musics.. with hope that they’ll eventually meet each other again….
This story sets in 90s (I assume from the yuppies & Friends TV show) where internet is not as ubiquitous as it is now. What even owning a smartphone/ social media!
So can you imagine the longing?? Heart wrenching?? The person you love is at another side of the 🌎 and it’s not like you can contact them everyday
It’s a slow moving plot, the beginning are all cutesy, followed by rising plot that’s nothing major except their life progress and boom! The climax and ending are just 😲🤭😩😭 I immediately gave it a 5🌟
The pacing is fast though it’s a 5-year-life-journey. Author succeeded in writing beautifully flawed characters which is very humanly, grasp cultures of both Asian & Western. In fact, I initially thought that she’s Thai! The way she portrayed Karn is as how we know “gadis kampung” to be. And I love all the references she used, even learned few Thai phrases! Also some Thai yummy delicacies 😋
I won’t give you any spoiler, but this is a book you would want to tell your Asian mother, grandma, aunties about it. Simply because they’ll connect with the story more. I just poured all 52-episodes sinetron to our bibik😌Dia pulak emosi pastu hahahaha
Oh yea, there’s no evil character here, only life can be cruel, sometimes 😌

I would want to love this book so bad as I was having a very high expectations when I picked this up. This book has been on my tbr since last year so I was actually quite disappointed when I know I didn't enjoy this.
At Sea with a Song is about Thanikarn, a masseuse, who fell in love with Lucas who was visiting the island of Koh Samui with his family. Both went head over heels for each other, spent time together and grew closer. Two weeks of vacation ended and Lucas returned to Paris, which left them figuring out their own life in two separate ways.
The beginning was actually wholesome and cute. Lucas was literally a walking greenflag and I'm so awed by his manner. Trust me, Thanikarn, I would fall for him too. I literally sketched and wrote all over the book on how green-flag he was. Okay, enough about the character.
I don't like the writing style to be honest. I felt like it was all over the place and kinda messy. Some scene was rushed, so when I read it, I did feel like the author's dire need for the scene to be over JUST BEFORE IT STARTED. It irritated me that it kept happening as I turned the pages over. This, honestly, ruined my excitement to enjoy this book.
And the ending? Idk... it's that some kind of a hint that there's gonna be a second book? I hoped there would be tho because I can't tolerate with that kind of ending.
If you love a quick read with simple writing, this may be a good book for you. I don't think I am a fan of the writing style so yeah.
Not bad. I enjoyed the trip to Thailand and learning about the culture. I had mixed feelings about Thanikarn, doesn't a father get to know he's a father? The prose has a good balance between lyricism and action. A good vacation book!
