Escaping Sanctuary #1

The Book of Jared

In the Sanctuary, survival comes at a price.

As the Earth self-destructs, Jared Morgan’s only hope for survival is the Sanctuary, an underground city carved from the tunnels of Poland’s salt mines. However, it soon becomes clear that the greater danger is not what Jared endured on the surface, but who he is now trapped with below it. The ruthless new leader, David, wants just one thing in return for safe passage into the Sanctuary - complete control of every aspect of the citizens' lives.

But Jared and his grandfather have a secret. They’ve discovered that DNA can be used as a map for time travel. As the warped forces within the Sanctuary threaten to twist Jared in their own image, he realises that if he wants a future in which he is free, then he will have to find the courage to escape to the past.

The Book of Jared is the riveting first novel in the Escaping Sanctuary series.

I was interested in this book due to the premise being similar to the Hugh Howey Wool, Shift and Dust books, however the only similarities were the uninhabitable earth and the survivors living underground, other than that it went in a different direction, including a bit of time travel! I really enjoyed this book, it was an easy read and as it ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, I look forward to reading book 2!

Great story

This was a very intriguing read and I found myself sucked into Jareds world. But David, him, I was not a fan of, right from the start.

Thought-provoking post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi

This was a well-written and engrossing story of the survivors of a global apocalypse trying to survive the “sanctuary” they’ve created for themselves.

I found the central characters engaging and original and the plot and world-building entertaining. Overall smart and thought-provoking.

J for Jared

This book was very, very well written. The dystopian genre isn't usually my cup of tea, but this really captured my attention. The author, Cher L. Jones, is very talented. I recommend this book, and I'm on my way to read the sequel!

Thought provoking time-travel adventure!

This is a great dystopian time-travel novel. It had time-travel, natural disasters, mystery, and an evil dictator, all blended together flawlessly. Very enjoyable.

interesting work

The work of any author is measured by how they express their ideas into an interesting way. In this novel we look at the story Jared how he tries to unmask the past by using DNA. Concluded as expected.

cool concept

Cool and fun concept of time travel! Which is my favorite genre! Characters were well flushed out, but wording was fairly simple. He said she said was used a lot, but many of the descriptions were imaginative!

interesting story

I liked the idea of this story a lot and the pace is good. But the author doesn’t write transitions and I found this difficult. It just makes reading it feel like you’re driving over a bumpy road. Also sometimes the dialogue falls flat. I just didn’t “swan” with the writing style I guess.

Such a surprising book. Well done. Loved the play of characters. The story is told through three points of view; Laura, the mother of Jared, Edmond, the grandfather of Jared, and Jared. Kept me interested. So much going on. Handled all the juggling well. There is a dystopian story here, but so much more. There is also a lot of science in this science fiction. DNA is highly involved. There is time travel here as well. The time travel is weird but understandable. When is time travel not weird? Always harken back to Terminator when people reference time travel. The lesser characters are interesting. The author handles every detail well. There is a little Terminator feeling in the time travel element. Suppose that has to happen. Overall the story is enjoyable, the characters are well developed and everything works. Love the idea of a world restarting underground in this claustrophobic environment and all the craziness of living in a windowless cave. So happy to read an entertaining, multi-leveled and enthralling effort. Looking forward to more from this author.
