Rate this book

We all know that there are some people who demonstrate a capacity for extraordinary creative genius that sets them apart. They articulate things that have never been known before and become the transformative visionaries of history. We often assume that they must have been born with a rare talent for novelty. In this book, you will discover that genius is not only a talent that you are born with, it is a human capacity that can be trained and cultivated by anyone. In these pages, you will learn how to nurture your own creative brilliance by examining the unusual lives of luminaries ranging Gertrude Stein, Ralph Waldo Emerson and William James, to Anaïs Nin, Philip K. Dick and Captain Marvel. You will compare the genius of Eastern mysticism with the brilliance of Christianity and Islam. You will explore great works of poetry, literature, science fiction, comic books and even extreme sports. There is no realm of human endeavor that can not produce genius. What you learn from this brief history of genius becomes truly valuable as you discover how it can be applied to unleash your own creative potential. You will learn how to develop your own capacity for genius by discovering a mysterious inner state of mind that is intimately connected to life and simultaneously free of limitations and boundaries. "Nothing is more difficult than to allow a movement of which we are conscious to go on of itself. The desire to take charge of it is almost irresistible." - Solomons and Stein

"By exploring our bottom nature, those aspects of ourselves that go on mindlessly without conscious attention or deliberation, Stein was exploring what William James often spoke about as our 'habits'."

"The fact that most of our lives occur completely unconsciously is a blessing as long we 'make our nervous system our ally instead of our enemy' (751). We need to use the laws of habit to our advantage by making as many beneficial activities as we can automatic and habitual as early as possible."

"...we can imagine that, inside us, the dynamic energy of life has become intertwined with the energetic binds of personal conditioning and social expectation. Disrupting our deeply habitual tendencies might, therefore, be thought of as a way to unleash the more profound energy of elan vital."

"Most people's minds are so unfree that once they have been indoctrinated into the accepted truth of a scientific discipline, any other possibility becomes unimaginable. 'Only the born geniuses let themselves be worried and fascinated by these outstanding exceptions,' James claims."

"While our access to profound inner capacities can be gained through the demands of extraordinary circumstances and cultivated through practice and commitment, James reveals that hidden inner potentials can also be ingited by energy-releaseing ideas that liberate creative imaginative. These inner energies are released during the experience of spiritual transformation."

"We all find unhealthy boundaries like these embedded in our sense of self, and part of the work of psychology is to help us rid ourselves of them."

"My hope is that you, and I, will find our unique ways to unleash the higher creative potentials that lie within us. but in order to do that, we must first liberate our minds from the ontological assumption of being only a physical entity locked in a three-dimensional universe. We must challenge ourselves to imagine that we are much more than that. Embracing the immensity of a higher vision of reality will demand that we question everything, including the very existence of truth."

"But how do we know what is true? How do we know we are moving closer to the truth about reality if we don't know what that truth is?"

"My body continuously grows, my ideas change, I create new memories, and forget old ones. If I think of myself twenty years ago, that person seems like a completely different person than who I am today, but I still cling to the idea that there is only one of me."

"The stream of consciousness unfolds like a sentence, growing in richness of meaning with each new experience."

"These artists were breaking the rules no just to be rebellious, but to ignite us to greater conscious awareness."

"We take a shower and get dressed without conscious memory of what we have done. Certainly, consciousness was required from us along the way, but only at the most basic level."

"Art occurs when the spectator, reader, or listener actually feels what the artist is feeling."

"Life wakes us up and calls us into action when she needs us, and we are roused to conscious action to serve her."

"The revolutionary artist...must find a way to liberate our awareness from habitual patterns of perception. By confronting us with images and ideas that cannot be easily absorbed by our minds in their current configuration, the revolutionary artist creates a sense of discordance and, in so doing, manufactures a disruption in the flow of life. Life, in turn, responds by unleashing the energy of consciousness in an effort to restore harmony."

"Whatever burdens on thrown on God, He bears them. Since the supreme power of God makes all things move, why should we, without submitting ourselves to it, constantly worry ourselves with thoughts as to what should be done and how, and whats should not be done and how not? We know that the train carries all loads, so after getting on it why should we carry our small luggage on our head to our discomfort, instead of putting it down in the rain and feeling at ease?" - Ramana Maharshi

Heteronym - the name of an actual entity, a being, that wrote through Fernando Pessoa's body

Jeff Clark "created a possibility in Northern California that hadn't been there before."

"Artists of Possibility can work in any domain, because new possibilities are waiting to be created in philosophy as well as in surfing, in literature as much as in business, in science and in childcare. There is no aspect of human endeavor that doesn't have its Artists of Possibility pushing at the edges."

I have a very scientific rationalist neighbour here in a very small village in France who told me once: "Poetry is the art that is capable to approach reality, truth the most".

Jeff Carreira wrote with "Higher Self Expression" a remarkable and humanly very accessible book that not only approaches reality but even touches, re-ignites the sparkle of life and our creative imagination. With an interesting mix of philosophy, psychology spirituality, literature, personal experiences and yes freed creativity. Not by saying this all is true, but as possible invisible unending relations within the expanding and retracting breath of life. The fragments of science and our, for security looking brain are touched again, relieved from its isolations and therefore its anxieties invited towards the adventure, evolution of life ………………… of which we are part and which we forget at times.

My neighbour friend is at times a "rational extremist" as I am myself in moments of insecurity and isolation. At the same time, he is one of the most sensible persons I know. Often, we see in our experiences these as opposites that cannot unite. Jeff Carreira succeeds in writing "Higher Self Expression" to go in this betweenness not as a place of lost souls that lost their compass of life but as an invitation to see beauty and the wholeness of this mystery of which we are part. And that all there is, is part of the same mystery or illusion because it is co-creating through us. Like life and death. A betweenness in which you do not have to choose which one is truer then the other. No they are part of the same wholeness or nothingness if you want. When the experience of separation starts to dissolve it simply means it is reconnecting with that which has always been there. And it is not us doing so, it is simply life itself doing this, we can open the door to it, but it is not us doing it, we’re simply part of it and always have been. I recommend Jeff’s poetry full hearted, if you’re called to it by speaking and listening at the same time.

As a fourteen-year-old, I said once in the classroom: All is nothing and at the time I fully experienced what it meant. Later on in life I tried to get back to it to what it meant or what I experienced, why it felled so true at that time. But I didn’t have a clue. Life expresses itself in a mystery of infinite experiences, possibilities & opportunities through us.

Jeff Carreira touches this mystery in this beautiful poetry of life that combines spirituality, philosphy, literature, psychology and personal experience opening a new world of possiblity uniting the world that is and the world that can be, awaiting to be rediscovered and reconnected.

Jeff Carreira writes here about some very interesting and creative people in history. He reveals each one's particular genius and the way they had the courage to follow these deep questions that appeared in their lives. He also touches on process philosophy and radical empiricism.

After discussing many aspects of these artists of possibility, he lets the reader know why these artists were important in his life, how they managed to become known to him and how their stories helped to explain his own experiences. I was left with the desire to listen more carefully to the new story that Life wants to tell through me.
