This book was amazing.
This follows on from the first one, and you really need to read the first one first.

When Mr. Ross here does a sequel, he DOES A SEQUEL! Lol This was SO good!! He is such a talented author. This is pretty dark, so definitely upper MG. Can’t say a lot, or it will spoil book 1. But this had EVEN MORE adventure, danger, suspense, magic, & gruesome mayhem! His attention to even the tiniest detail, amazing writing, phenomenal world/story building, & superb character development is next level. There’s a new character in here that I absolutely adored! As well as original favs. There is 1 sad part, & y’all know I don’t like sad things. But it had nothing to do w/animals, & it could have been a lot worse with as dark as this was lol so I still loved this regardless. I really really really hope there will be more to come in the series! So intriguing & engrossing. On the edge of my seat the whole time, & could not put it down. I picked this up yesterday on page 50 some, & then finished the rest. HIGHLY recommend! BEAUTIFUL cover by Amy Grimes!💜

I have really enjoyed reading both Evernight books especially The Feast of the Evernight. Out. I was really drawn into the excitement of the book and how the author made me think about what he had written down, he has really painted a good picture of what Westerly Witch looked like and all the characters. I liked how this book linked to the first one too, it was nice to have the same characters but further in the future.

I thought that the characters in this book were very well described so that I could make a good picture of what they looked like and were like and understand what they were thinking. I also liked the relationship between Lara and all of her friends, I felt like I knew them well.

This is a brilliant book, but I think that it is much better to read the first book before you read this one so that you can fully understand all of the places and characters more. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who enjoys reading an exciting and brilliant fantasy fiction book. I have enjoyed this book lots and hope that lots of others will too.

This is such a magical story and I loved it so much more than the first book! After defeating the Evernight Lara has been spending the last year training to become a proper witch before leaving her home in Westerly Witch in order to be mentored. But some terrible things are happening in the sourthern lands of the Silver Kingdom, and Lara’s mentor soon has her helping to find a killer, someone she might know.

This is such an interesting story and so compelling to read that I just couldn’t put this down and ended up reading almost all of it in one sitting! A year after the Evernight was defeated the king is planning a celebration, a feast, to celebrate the overcoming of the evil and darkness. But a killer is out there on the loose and Lara and her mentor Ginny do everything they can to find the killer and stop them before they hurt someone else. I love how brillint this story is and how much depth there is to what happens. As Lara goes on her new journey of being mentored, as her friend Double Eight did before her, her other friend Joe has his own journey to go on separately from Lara.

There is a lot happening in the story but there is never any confusion and all the individual stories end up coming together to form what feels like a brilliant and epic tale. While Lara and Joe travel south from Westerly Witch and then go on their individual journeys which are both interesting and exciting, we’re introduced to new characters Ivy and Karl Younger who I couldn’t help but love as the new villian of the story. I really enjoyed how this new character was introduced and what happens with him later in the story. The way some chapters, especially earlier on were written about him, he just feels like a brilliant villain for the story. I enjoyed Ivy’s character too, especially what happens to her with her magical abilities and how important she becomes to the story and the other characters later.

As the story continues we learn more about this killer and I couldn’t help but love how interesting and creepy this part of the story is. What happens and who is thought responsible is interesting and I did find myself feeling shocked and amazed more than once when I found out what was really happening. The descriptions of some of the story feel quite creepy and a little dark considering how eerie and weird the killings end up being. I’m not sure if I felt as creeped out with the first book as I did with this one but this really did feel like a good book that I just couldn’t put down, as I desperately wanted to know what would happen to all of the characters.

Although the story frequently changes viewpoint, as I said it’s never confusing and in fact it felt like I was watching a movie, with so many different things happening but all connected in some ways. Although I remembered the previous book and a lot of the details of how magic worked I had forgotten how clever and different the way spells are cast and I liked the unique way the wands fire spells, a little like a gun. Some of the spells were interesting too and I couldn’t help but like the locator spell and what happens when it’s cast. The new location of the book, much of it taking place in Lake End was interesting too, I enjoyed the new area with its more rural, wild and wild west feel.

The book has such a good ending with a lot of tension and build up and a great few twists which I didn’t see coming, including the big reveal which completely surprised me! I just love how this story went and what happens with all the characters, even though I felt some mixed emotions reading this as there are some truly wonderful happy, funny and some very sad moments too. The ending is good and completes the story well with no loose ends and although the last pages don’t hint at another book in the series I do really hope there is another one being written as I just want to find out even more about the characters including Lara’s family and past which was hinted at but not fully explored in the first book. The final pages are good though they again left me with mixed emotions over how the story ends, both a happy ending but sad with the way that the characters are growing moving on.

The book has some lovely images at the start of each chapter which hint at something that happens in that chapter, as well as an absolutely gorgeous cover! The story has some mentions of killings which might be a little too creepy and gruesome for younger readers although I don’t believe any of it is too scary for older children to read. The fact that this book has not only Karl Younger as the typicall villain but also the interesting and creepy tale of the killer and who it might be, this just felt like a much more compelling book than the first and I would urge anyone who loves a magical story to check this one out, even if you had mixed feelings over the first book like I did.

I really hope there will be a third book to this series and will be eagerly waiting if there is! This is such an interesting and creepy story and one which I have enjoyed so much. I just can’t wait to read what I hope will be another book in the series and I can’t wait to see what happens to Lara and all her friends, both old and new! This is definitely a book I’d recommend although you may want to read the first book to understand who all the chracters are and what happened with the Evernight.

If you’re looking for magical middle grade reads for spooky season then I’d recommend the Carnegie Medal-nominated Evernight and Feast of the Evernight. This was one of the those joyful instances where book two, Feast of the Evernight, lived up to and maybe even surpassed its predecessor

Over the Pewter Sea in Westerly Witch, Larabelle Fox is about to sit her final test to become a fully-fledged witch. Meanwhile in the Silver Kingdom, a new threat is emerging from deep inside the Veil, the forest that surrounds the Kingdom’s Southern lands. Lara and Joe again find their courage put to the test as a spate of killings threatens to undermine the fragile peace of a nation that teeters between trust and mistrust of magic and witches

Not only is the world that Ross Mackenzie builds beautifully rounded and believable, so too are his characters. This doesn’t come at the cost of plot or pace as the story jogs along merrily with a good old-fashioned struggle between good and evil. Here’s hoping that another one may be along soon 🤞

This was so disappointing.
I really loved the first book in the series, but unfortunately everything that made that book good is missing from this one.
*mild Spoilers ahead*
The main villain of the first book is a truly gruesome, evil creation who steals the souls of babies to keep herself young and has an army of zombie-like witches at her disposal. This villain is Lord Voldemort from Philosphers stone crossed with the face stealer from Airbender. Which sounds chilling but it's never actually explored.
The first book is a Save the World adventure, this is a Fetch Quest.
The first book features distinct and interesting characters, this book either removes them altogether, or turns them into whiny cry babies.
Basically, I'm not a fan. Which is a shame, because Evernight was SO GOOD. Sorry.

What an exciting adventure! Full of magic, mystery and intrigue. Once I started reading I couldn’t stop, I was on the edge of my seat and just had to know what happens next!!

We fall back into the Silver Kingdom with Larabelle Fox and Joe Littlefoot as if we’ve never been away. The evernight has been destroyed and now Lara and Joe are growing up and moving on with their lives. But there’s something deadly in the Silver Kingdom which threatens the Silver King’s Evernight Feast and Lara has to find out who or what is causing these atrocious acts.
Along Lara and Joe’s journey we find ourselves in the company of familiar faces and also find some new friends. There are many twists, turns, ups and downs in Feast of the Evernight which will keep you reading long into the night!

I really enjoyed the first installment of this series in early 2020, before COVID changed the world entirely and I’m a huge fan of Ross Mackenzie’s generally, so I was very excited to pick this up and it really didn’t disappoint. The world this takes place in is so unusual and interesting, and in this installment we follow Lara and Joe venturing to a different part of it, to investigate a string of sinister magical killings, which their friend Double Eight is believed to be the perpetrator of, amidst their world changing after the way that book one ended. It’s really hard to say much more than that about the plot as it would give away a lot of the first book, but I have lots of other things I’m excited to rave about! Lara is such a wonderful character and it was great to see her learning more about herself and her power, and her loyalty to Double Eight was so heart wrenching. I also loved Joe’s role in this and his sort of search for vengeance that he has going on, I found Ivy fascinating, and Ginny and Rob were such fantastic side characters. Something else I love about this series is how deliciously dark it is. It’s definitely an upper middle grade book for this reason, but if you like your middle grade with a bit of an edge, this is something you have to pick up! I’ve no idea what Ross is planning to write ne

Thank you so much for this ARC copy. I absolutely loved Evernight, so was really excited to get the chance to read this sequel. I was not disappointed at all.
Lara is back and the action starts immediately, as there is a gruesome murder and those at Westerly Witch think Double Eight might be involved.
It was great to be back with Lara and Joe and I enjoyed the introduction of new characters too.
I could not put this book down, the attention to detail, character development and descriptions are wonderful. I absolutely loved it. I hope there is more to come in this series.

A proper magical murder mystery for 8-11 year olds!
Following on from the excellent Evernight, we rejoin familiar characters Lara and Joe as they try to solve a mystery and save a friend.
Excellent narrative from beginning to end, with a really satisfying conclusion… dare I say? Better than the first book?
Yes. I think I do!

This is another magical mystery that is fast paced, scary and has a riddle at its heart that needs to be solved, because Larabelle Fox is quite certain that it is not Double Eight who does the bad deeds indeed.

Loved the characters, the magic, the plot and yet, something did just not quite click for me.

I received and ARC if this book from NetGalley and Anderson Press in exchange for an honest review.

I've been anticipating this sequel ever since I finished Evernight last year. The worldbuilding and characters set up in book 1 were so detailed and intriguing that I was eager to find out what happened next.

This book begins almost a year after the final events in the first book. With the Evernight defeated and the souls of witches that Mrs Hester stole returned to their rightful owners, Lara, Joe and Double Eight are free to move on with their lives. However, far to the south, in the Veil Forest, an evil presence lurks and it has committed some gruesome murders. All the evidence points to Double Eight being the suspect! Lara travels south to try and uncover the truth. Meanwhile, in King's Haven, the secret police are ruthlessly hunting down fleeing witches and anyone they perceive as a threat to their authority. Once again, Lara and Joe find themselves surrounded by danger and unsure who they can trust.

This book had me captivated from start to finish. Characters, atmosphere and plot all worked perfectly together. It was great to see Lara grow into her new life in this book, but still show the same fierce independence and no-nonsense attitude, I love her for. Joe continues to be a loyal friend, but I liked the fact that the story covered the emotional toll events in the previous book had taken on him. I also appreciated Joe having his own mission and m0tiviations. Ivy is a great addition. Just as brave and determined as Lara, but with a more thoughtful aspect to her personality, giving more variety to this trio.

The tension in the atmosphere is brilliantly crafted: from the creepy beginning; to the relentless pursuit by the secret police; to the reveal at the end. There are also great moments of humour and some poignant scenes.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Evernight. For those who haven't read Evernight, if you like fantasy worlds with a historical feel, magical battles, secrets and mysteries, this is a series for you.

Well this straight up starts with a scene from a horror movie, which I think would creep out the young readers the book is intended for.
It also felt like Evernight #1.5 and needed a clearer focus, rather than just checking in with folk since the first book.
