Okay, wow! Let’s talk about Shattered State by L. Blaise Hues, the second book in the Legacy of Debris trilogy. I absolutely loved it. This series is quickly becoming one of my absolute favourites. It’s got everything romance, drama, a post apocalyptic world and a hint of a fairytale retelling all thrown together in an action packed storyline that will leave you wanting more.
It started off a little slower than the first book but damn, when it gets going it doesn’t stop. This story will honestly have you on the edge of your seat. I am always so afraid going in to second books because so many series fall prey to second book syndrome but this did not fall into that trap. This book was engaging and interesting and again had me hooked from line 1. I loved seeing the adventure from multiple POV’s and getting to know Kestrel as well as seeing our other main characters grow (Ellie, Johnny and Jackson).
I honestly can’t wait to see what happens next in book 3, especially after that cliffhanger ending. Thanks so much L. Blaise Hues for creating such an amazing series. I am enjoying every second of it. Thank you for sending me an arc copy in exchange for an honest review. You should be so proud of all your hard work this series is amazing!

An explosive follow up to Republic of Ruin, Shattered State takes the dystopian apocalyptic landscape, tragedy & war of the first book and turns everything up to 11.
Integral to this sequel is chapters of the story told from Kestrel's perspective. Through her, we get to see the absolute devastation in the town of Knotwood and how good people lost their lives, trying to extend a little compassion to their fellow man. There is a brief respite and moments of harmony back in Rock Ridge but it's not enough to quell the looming doom overshadowing them because of the rogue Vultures. Theresa & Royce's presence still continue to loom large over the entire novel. Side by side with the series protagonist Ellie Hudson, we see both young women (along with Johnny & Captain Jackson Wyatt) experience fragile alliances and familial bonds being broken, betrayal, danger, death and yet, there is still some hope, what with the blossoming of love and new relationships, along with forgiveness.
With the book ending on an absolutely insane cliffhanger, however, Crimson State promises to be an absolute roller coaster of a finale for the Legacy of Debris trilogy.
Perhaps the strongest middle entry in a trilogy I've read in a good 15 years, L. Blaise Hues more than satisfies in upping the ante from the devastation of Republic of Ruin.

This is book 2 in the Legacy of Debris series. A post apocalyptic with a dark fairytale spin.

Shattered State is full of hope, patriotism, and love.
This book starts out with a bang. As soon as it begins we learn about an important character. We learn more about Kestrel’s mother and I loved being able to relate to her.
I enjoyed the dual POV because it gave me much more knowledge of what certain characters were thinking. I’m happy to feel more connected to these characters and really understand their thought process.
I loved that we get to really understand the actions of Kestrel. I felt more connected to this character after learning about her inner struggles. I loved seeing Johnny grow as a disabled character. He was becoming a solider right before our very eyes. Ohhh Levi 🥰 I really enjoyed learning the reasons behind his actions and about his past.
The characters came to life so much that I found myself yelling when they’d do something dumb. There were these romantic and cute moments that give you all the feelings and emotions of a first love.
Love love the fairytale aspects!! I guessed at something with Kestrel that I am still proud that I knew.
I can’t wait to see where this story goes and how it unfolds. You know when you read a book and you feel changed by it? Yes, that’s how I feel about this book.

Book 2 of the Legacy of Debris series has left me stunned. That ending has left me wanting book 3 immediately!
I wasn’t sure how this book was going to play out after all that happened in book 1, but I have to say I’m really impressed. I loved the multiple POVs, Kestrel is an amazing character. She is strong, kind, compassionate and getting to know more about her and getting her perspective was a great choice for this book.
Even with the dark post apocalyptic feels of the book, there was still lightness. The characters grew, there was romance, there were new challenges, there was mystery and among all the bad there was still hope.
Definitely would recommend!

Shattered State is book 2 in the legacy of debris trilogy by L. Blaise Hues. I really liked it!
I loved that we got to see Kestrel’s perspective of the story. Honestly, the character development for the characters in this book was so well thought out.
There were some things that I didn’t think would happen but I was pleasantly surprised when they did. I read this in one sitting. Loved it!
I just want to say that Johnny, more than anything, is a great friend. He has such a kind soul. Love him.
This book does end on a cliffhanger!! I can’t believe it ended like that!!! Why would you do this to me! I can’t wait to read the third book!!

"Shattered State" brings another perspective to the events in Rock Ridge through the eyes of Kestrel. Strong writing that avoids the 'second book slump' so frequent in trilogies. With good pacing throughout, the book added to the main events and storylines of "Republic of Ruin," and then added a new dimension through Kestrel's experiences. I enjoyed how Ellie's persona gained depth through this change in perspective. I really liked Kestrel's story and the author's adaptations to another well-known fairytale. The action scenes were great, as well as the psychological aspects touching on how people cope with loss and remain resilient in the face of adversity. Strong rite-of-passage themes throughout, not just dealing with adolescence, but also acknowledging how the hero herself must change--not the world around her. POWERFUL ending! Excited for the finale in book three.

A wonderful follow-up to the first installment in the series, Republic of Ruin. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Shattered State and being once more exposed to the world of Rock Ridge. This sequel has all the strengths of its predecessor, while also introducing new conflicts that will need to be resolved, as well as telling the story through new characters. It also ends on a WHOPPER of a cliffhanger, so needless to say, I am quite excited at reading the third and final installment in the series!

I waited too long after reading book one to pick up book two so it took me a bit to remember what was going on nd who was who. The beginning of this one actually goes back into the events of book one from Kestrel's point-of-view. Honestly, that threw me because you don't get all of book one again, just some highlights.
However, once this book got past those initial (short) chapters, it picked up and didn't let go! Somehow this book deals with trauma and its after effects without losing the pacing or making you want to yell at the characters. It does NOT suffer from the second book slump that I a lot of trilogies so - this book is just as good as the first one! And the cliffhanger ending? I will definitely not be waiting as long to read the third book!

This book was amazing!!! I don’t know how it’s possible but it’s even better than the first book. We are not only getting the storyline and pov of Ellie, but also of Kestrel, which makes it so interesting and fun to read. I was holding my breath many times during thrilling moments and plot twists. L. Blaise Hues managed to keep me interested throughout the book and surprised me many times. She did a phenomenal job expanding the world of the “after EMPs America”.
