Campbell McBride drives to her father’s house in Murray, Kentucky, dreading telling him she’s lost her job as an English professor. Her father, Bill McBride, isn’t there or at his office in town. His brash young employee, Nick Emerson, says Bill hasn’t come in this morning, but he did call the night before with news that he had a new case.
When her dad doesn’t show up by late afternoon, Campbell and Nick decide to follow up on a phone number he’d jotted on a memo sheet. They learn who last spoke to her father, but they also find a dead body. The next day, Campbell files a missing persons report. When Bill’s car is found, locked and empty in a secluded spot, she and Nick must get past their differences and work together to find him.
FROM AUTHOR'S WEBSITE: I'm a native of central Maine, and grew up on a small farm with a wonderful mom and dad, three sisters and a brother. Most of my books take place in small towns, many of them in Maine.
My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!
Our children are all home-schooled. When Jim retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, we moved from Maine to Kentucky.
I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books. Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.
For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.
This is another great Mystery by Susan Page Davis. I am not reading much but this book got me in. I wanted to know more. Campbell comes home after being retrenched from her job and finds her dad missing. Her Father is a PI and with the help of his employee Nick and the local police detective they set out to find him. Campbell wants to find her father and they go about piecing together his last movements and asking questions of people who had seen him and also information on the possible case he was on. I won't give more details as this is a mystery and readers need to find clues themselves. I found I had ideas of what would happen and it changed several times. I like the idea of having a Private Detective agency as the main focus of the book. I also can't wait for the next book in the series. As I mentioned I am not reading as much due to health issues but this book had me wanting to find times to read and made me want to read more. If you like a mystery involving Private Investigators this is the book for you.
Feeling like her Dad will be disappointed in her, Campbell heads to his new home in Kentucky. As the newest professor at the college, she was the first to be laid off when budget cuts became necessary. At her Dad's office, she soon realizes he has been out of touch with his only other employee Nick since the previous day. While Campbell was still in college, her Dad moved to start a small private invegaiter's business. By the next day, Campbell and Nick are both concerned about her Dad's disappearance. Little by little, Campbell becomes very involved in several cases while trying to find her father. This is a great story with multiple crimes plus plenty of action and many fascinating characters too! I always enjoy the mystery stories from the pen of Susan Page Davis
Bowser! Just loved this book! Good setup--Campbell McBride loses her job as a college professor of English and goes home to her father's house only to find him missing. Nick, the bad kid in high school, is now working for her dad, and has matured under Mr. McBride's mentoring. And for now he is running True Blue, her father's private investigation business in the boss's absence. Following meager clues, Campbell stirs things up and is subjected to break ins at home & office plus threats to do more. Bottom line, in pursuit of her father's whereabouts, Campbell manages to clear three cold cases, a recent murder, and find her dad. This book is titled Book 1, so I'm hoping Campbell applies for that P.I. license and clears up even more mysteries. And what about that name: Campbell McBride! Could it get any more Scottish than that??
Wow! I was excited when Susan Page Davis asked me if I'd like to read a copy of her soon-to-be-released book, Blue Plate Special. She didn't ask me to review it, but since I tend to review every book I read and love, I'm doing the same with this one. If you read Davis's bio you will read that she worked for a Central Maine paper as a freelancer. It really shows in her knowledge of investigative procedures and in how her main character in this book, Campbell McBride, begins her search for her missing father. I LOVE procedurals and mysteries so this book was perfect for me. I also like how Davis gives us just enough detail to really flesh out the story but not so much that you can predict how it's going to end. I certainly recommend this book!
I'm never disappointed by Susan Page Davis! Campbell McBride may be an adult but when she arrives home to stay with her father, private investigator Bill McBride, to find him missing and not answering his phone, Campbell is upset! I admired how Campbell takes on the investigation when she doesn't feel the police are doing enough. People get nervous when Campbell starts asking questions about unsolved crimes in the area! Campbell and her dad's employee end up facing danger. I recommend Blue Plate Special to others who enjoy suspense! I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.
Campbell McBride intends to stay with her dad in Murray only until she find another job. Laid off from the position as English professor because of budget cuts, she's not sure she wants another teaching job. When she arrives, her father, PI Bill McBride of True Blue Investigations, is missing, and she joins forces with Bill's assistant Nick Emerson to find Bill. Along with the discovery of a dead person, their investigation stirs up a hornet's nest related to a couple of unsolved past murders Add dedicated, good-looking police detective Keith Fuller and you have action-packed suspense and the beginnings of romance.
Good whodunit with some intricate plot lines. Enjoyed the rather non-complex characters and build-up to a possible romance in the next book. However, the characters were a little stoic and the book was slow for the first third. A good read if you're tired of characters being instantly and crazily attracted to each other and with stories having too much violence. Clean read, of course, from this author. There were a few times I wondered if what the detective did was really something a law enforcement officer would do or would be allowed to do. Otherwise, a good read.
With this superb read Susan Page Davis returns to my favorite genre, mystery. After losing her teaching position to budget cuts, Campbell comes to visit her private detective father only to discover he’s missing. Several mystery threads emerge during the search for her Dad, along with a great cast of supporting characters make this an intriguing and challenging read. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I look forward to reading more of Campbell, Keith, Nick, and others.
This book shows what great writing and storytelling accomplishes! I was intrigued from the first chapter and did not want to stop reading. The characters walk in, become real and you share their anxiety and the scary thrill of searching for Campbell's missing PI father and a murderer on the loose in their small Kentucky town. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!
This is a really good mystery. It’s almost where you can figure it out as you read but not quite. Campbell McBride comes home to see Dad and he isn’t there. Bill McBride is the owner of an Investigative agency and has disappeared. As Campbell and Nick and Detective Fuller start the hunt for him, many other things seem to fit into the picture, like murder, mayhem and missing people. This is a good read!
I’ve been waiting in anticipation for the Blue Plate Special to release. Oh, wow! It’s every bit as excellent of a mystery as I expected. With the same fabulous characters as you expect from Susan Page Davis. And the best part? It’s book 1 of a series!!! We get more mysteries and adventures with the True Blue Detective Agency - HAPPY DANCE!
If there is one negative for me it is there thus far are only two books. Which means in all likelihood I’ll be looking for another Goodread by the end of the week.
The plot was good, the characters gets believable and no overload of sappy romance.
Having read other Susan Page Davis books I knew it was clean and it won’t do a slow crawl into the wrong direction.
I have been a fan of Susan Page Davis for a very long time. This first in a new series was as good or better than her previous books. It had suspense and mystery mixed with family and friends. She sure kept me guessing. It had a little romance and an hea ending. I will definitely be reading the next book, or two of the series.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I felt that it went a little long, and there were too many cases they were investigating. The fact that Campbell has a Fusion was mentioned too many times. I like mysteries where I can figure out the culprit ahead of time, however, I did not with this book, which was fine. I am now reading book 2 and will finish the series.
I enjoyed reading this book. The author describes and develops characters that I can picture in my mind. I liked the main characters and imagined what I might do in their situation. Being in Kentucky I could picture all of the towns she described. It is good mystery story.
This story held my interest for most of the day. It was a fascinating storyline with a lot of mystery. It involved a missing private eye and some murders that had not been solved. It was like I was there following were the the people that were investigating were th PI went and other parts of mystery deaths were involved. One of the best books I have read.
This is a well written mystery that is full of twists and turns. It will keep you guessing until the end. I love a good clean mystery and this book was perfect. I loved it! I received a complimentary copy and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is truly an action packed, clean mystery story. Just the right interaction between characters...no lust, colorful language...just right! Susan Page Davis...one of your best!
OMG! 😁 This book is so GOOD! 😁 I got hooked at chapter one and didn't stop until the last page. 😉 I love the western books by this author and I thought I would give this new kind of story a try, so glad I did. 😊 Can not wait for the next story to see just what Campbell is going to do.
2.5/5 A well-written beginning to a new series, with a likeable protagonist, but not especially well-plotted. With the dearth of young adult mysteries available, this would be a perfectly suitable book for an advanced preteen or teenager to read.
Blue Plate Special begins slow and I was tempted to quit reading it. However I am so happy I stuck with it because it was a fun book that kept me guessing right along. I thought I had it figured out but the twist toward the end was really good.
I really enjoyed this book! It was better than most romantic suspense novels I've read. It has an interesting plot and it doesn't constantly teat how they should not have romantic feelings over and over like some I've read.
Susan page Davis knows how to develop a story and keep the details coming a little later time until you’re so hooked you don’t wanna put the book down.
I love a good 'Who Dun It' with lots of twists and turns, don't you? Here is one you will enjoy, and the best news is . . . it is the first in a series.
What a delightful book! Ms. Davis really brought all of her characters to life and the twists to the plot kept me reading what too late! Heading off to get Book 2 now😀
