About the author

Reinier Hendrik de Graaf was born in Schiedam, Netherlands, where he graduated from Stedelijk Gymnasium in 1982.[1] He holds an architecture diploma from Delft University and a master's degree in architecture from the Berlage Institute. De Graaf worked for architecture firms in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom before joining OMA in 1996.

Чесно кажучи, думала не подужаю цю книгу…Очікувала, що роман буде саме про архітектуру. Але отримала книгу зав’язану на політиці, фінансових оборудках, темних схемах. Оскільки очікування не виправдались, а на середині читати стало дуже нудно, то я покинула. Після прочитання заявляю:незважаючи на вищезгадані недоліки книга варта уваги.
Особливо, через те,що ...
По-перше, якщо вас хоч раз цікавило чи архітекторів безпосередньо хвилює "законність" їхніх проектів чи подальше користування ними, то тут є дещо цікаве про їхню мотивацію. Або як сказано в передмові "руйнівне архітекторське еґо"))
По-друге, психологія стосунків дітей талановитих людей.
По-третє, чисто сюжет. Мрія будь-якого амбіційного архітектора – побудувати місто з нуля.

I’ve read this book because I care about what Reinier de Graaf has to say (and, perhaps, because I cherish an image of my future self as a similarly polymathic architect-writer).

I, for my part, have very little to say about it.
It is a decent book, well-paced, with genuine conflict and independent characters. The writing style falls into the background: it is adequate and appropriate enough not to call attention to itself.

Predictably, the plot revolves around a masterplan, an architect, and is, apparently, based on a real story (which I researched obsessively for a couple of weeks after finishing the book).
The main character is a bit of a naïve lamb, which, again, serves the story and is generally believable, but seems like a stretch at times: the reader figures out the plot twists before he does, even as the character researches, encounters suspicious situations and names like “Mr. Soantso”. Though one certainly understands his consuming feelings of self-doubt, inferiority and general self-absorption that contribute to him remaining in his bubble of ignorance.

The world of building design and construction is depicted with a measure of depressing accuracy, if not particular breadth, despite the low-key witticism weaved through the entirety of its image. The frustrations ever-present in the profession invariably come up in the main character’s ruminations.

The ending ties everything up with a little bow, being unexpected and foreseeable at the same time.

A good casual read, but not something to be placed on “must” lists.

He was an architect. He was here to build a city, not to construct a model society. It was a classic discussion about the role of the architect, one he remembered from his student days and from his family's kitchen table - should architects take stock of political ideology or was architecture a profession which ultimately existed independent of ideology.

Цей роман не про архітектуру, а про архітектора. Тут показана вся складність роботи зодчого у капіталістичному світі, де головною роллю виступає рентабельність та вартість будівлі, і вже потім її краса та естетичність. Головною думкою роману є показати на що найбільше витрачає сил архітектор, а саме: виборювання можливості зробити архітектуру, а не типову будівлю.

Гарний переклад, але слабкий сюжет

Головний герой не продемонстрував ані бажаних знань в архітектурі (для чого в такому разі були згадки, про навчання у всіх можливих топових університетах з архітектури?), ані присутності здорового глузду та можливості критично подивитися на ситуацію. Інфантилізм, демагогія, відсутність довіри до правдоподібності подій
