Three years ago, J.J. Santos, Jr. got himself killed—at least that’s what it said on paper. The DEA resurrected me as Mason Black, forcing me to leave behind everyone I’ve ever card about, including an angel in blue scrubs I can’t seem to get out of my head.
Her name is Dr. Callie Nicolo, and when our paths cross again, I’m in more danger than ever before. But I’m not about to leave her behind this time. Not even if it compromises my identity and my mission.
I’m the kind of man who wants it all. I’ll find a way to pacify the warring cartels on my tail and make up for lost time with the woman of my dreams. Most importantly, I’ll protect what’s mine—the doc who saved my life in more ways than one, and the little girl waiting for me back in Mexico.
Ophelia Bell is the author of the super steamy Sleeping Dragons series. Ophelia loves hot alpha heroes, especially if they’re dragons, but believes the world needs more alpha heroines, so has made it her mission to make that happen. Ophelia grew up on a rural farm in North Carolina and now lives in Los Angeles with her sexy tattooed alpha husband and five-and-a-half attention-whoring cats (one of them is exceptionally large and might actually be a dragon in disguise).
Mile High brings us Mason's (J.J) story. We start his story in the hospital after he gets shot which happens in Mad Dog's story and then continue's on. You don't technically have to read Mad Dog, but I would highly recommend it.
Mason will meet his soon-to-be love interest at the hospital, Callie when he is shot then but it won't be a few years until they get their chance to be together. Mason and Callie have hot chemistry right off the bat. Mason is at the end of his mission that has taken him all over Mexico and now is back in America. But he has to save someone near and dear to him before he can put the past behind him. Will Callie be able to understand everything he has done before her so that they can have a future together?
These two are wonderful together. They talk, laugh, love, and enjoy each other while there is danger all around. Mason doesn't try to hide who or what he is doing from Callie but he knows that everything he is doing could put her in more danger. Callie is a strong, intelligent, and loving woman that deserves someone like Mason. She has always needed someone to stand next to her in life, and that man is Mason.
In Mile High, we get to see everyone in the family again, and since a few years have gone by everyone has grown up and moved around some. I am excited to see where the next story takes us.
After Mad Dog,i knew i wanted to hear more of the Santos family. So,when i had the opportunity to get the ARC of Mile High,i didn’t have to think twice. Thank you,Ophelia, for JJ’s story,i really enjoyed it!
JJ “died” in hospital 3 years ago and Mason took his place. This was done to make it possible for him to work with the DEA on bringing Amador down. Who made all of this happen? You’d be surprised to see….in fact, you’ll find out in this story. His family was heartbroken, all of them, except his father….that man cares about one person, himself.
Neuro resident Callie is the one that saw him brought in,was there when he was operated on,and saw him wake up after. When she returned to his room,he was gone….and they told her he’d died? WTF? He kept haunting her mind and she was determined to find out one day what really happened. Until she meets him again……only now he’s called Mason?
There’s more to his story than she thought, and someone close to him needs to come home with him. Catching up,finding out how intertwined their lives are, finding they have chemistry, they can’t seem to be able to say goodbye. Even if Mason has a job to do,and they can’t commit until he’s done. So,when he’s ready to do what he has to,she goes with him.
Will it all work out without anyone getting killed? Will they manage to get everything they need? Is there a future for them when they get back home? An what about Mason’s parents……?
This was a rollercoaster ride that held my attention throughout. A beautiful story that shows patience does pay off… And that shows that even though children do look like their parents, they still are their own persons. They still have their own character, follow their own path…. And i love it!
Damn, call emergency services to put the fire out!!!! The heat and sizzle between our alpha hero and his heroine just about scorched my reading device.
I am loving this series, so the next book has a lot to live up to.
There is a lot going on in between the sizzle and fire of the romance, and things just seem to be getting the family in deeper, rather than getting them out!
Mason Black has been undercover for three years and has now found himself tied up and laying down on the floor of a plane. Now the really hard work begins for him. He has a time limit to gain the cooperation of his superiors and the agreement to a trade because more than one life depends on his gaining that cooperation. He only has one person he can count on, and they must convince the higher ups that the information they must trade will be worth the cooperation if they want to bring down the cartel.
Callie Nicolo has been in the same relationship for five years. It’s a tradeoff. She doesn’t have to worry about dating or making time for someone else in her life while she’s trying to finish her residency. Little does she know that the man she’s been with for so long doesn’t have the same issues. She’s about to find out though. There’s been one case since she’s been doing her residency that she hasn’t been able to forget, the man that asked her out while he was coming out of anesthesia from a dangerous surgery.
This story started out by pulling me in. While the first book was a tough start for me, Mile High was not. It drew my attention from the very first page and wouldn’t let go until the end. I loved it. I loved the connection between Mason and Callie as well as the intense storyline of the book. The danger, intrigue, and suspense were palpable and what pulled me in so hard from the beginning. These two are perfect together and Mason has learned to stem some of his quick reactions to his anger. I love the story and the characters, and I give this book a 5-star review.
After a gun running deal with drug lord Vincente Amador goes wrong, JJ Santos is badly injured and ends up in hospital. There he meets Dr Callie Nicolo who he chats up. Unexpectedly JJ dies overnight but Callie is not convinced. When she questions her boss about him, she is told to leave it alone but she cannot seem to forget him. Through his brother Mad and Arturo Flores, who has been working with the DEA to get rid of Amador. JJ now becomes an undercover agent for the DEA. As Mason Black he is placed in César Zavala's drug cartel. Over the next three years he collects information. Then Zavala finds out he is a mole, he gives him an ultimatum. He wants his brother released from jail and he will pass on enough information to get rid of his competition, Amador – if he fails, he will kill Mason's daughter. He returns to the US to meet with his handler and the Senator who is trying to take Amador down. But he learns his Mum has had a stroke and when he visits the doctor is none other than Callie and this time he is not letting her get away. There is much intrigue, twists and turns in this captivating story. Romance between our two lovers, Mason and Callie with hot steamy scenes. Adding to the story are the side stories involving other family members and friends. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next one in the series.
If you want a lot of intrigue, secrets, action, mob life and lots of hotness this is the series for you.....This is the second book of this great 5 part series and they are all stand alone.
This is the story of Mad Dog's second brother, J.J. Santos died 3 years ago, or that's what the Flores Cartel, DEA and a certain Senator wants the world to think.....Enter Mason Black, he's going to get dirt on the the major Cartel in Mexico, the Amador Cartel and what better way than to go under cover....Things go sideways and now Mason is facing certain danger, especially to the baby girl he needs to get out of there with the Senators help....Only he never counted on meeting up with that gorgeous Doctor he remembers from 3 years ago when he died. It was heaven seeing her when he woke up that fateful day, it's even better now. Only he's dead to her, or so she thinks.
Callie never thought any man would ever grab her attention like Mason Black, but he does and he is so familiar it's uncanny...She has dreamt of only one man for many years, but he died and she'll never get a chance to go on that date with J.J. but it doesn't matter in the arms of Mason. She is flying high in his arms. What would my mother think if she saw me now?
The beginning of this book was a bit of a struggle for me as it seemed to be a bit all over the place. Couple that with Callie & Mason being more like two ships passing in the night I found it very hard to really connect with them. This book was more action adventure with a side of romance thrown in as a good portion of the book had already gone by before these two spent more than a few minutes together.
After reading Mad Dog and with how things ended with Mason I was expecting a lot more than we got with this story. I appreciated Callie being more interested in the clinical aspects of certain things that she found out about, however that seemed at least for me to also carry over into the story itself a lot of it felt more clinical and detached rather than engaging.
Many of the previous characters were also present in this book which gave the story the much needed interest and connection for me to not make it fall totally into the forgettable category. So, while there are parts that I really enjoyed it still wasn’t enough for me to rate this higher than a 3.5 star review.

Book 2 in Second Skin series by Ophelia Bell. JJ has tried to get away from his abusive father and the life that comes with it. JJ becomes Mason Black which has been his alter ego for a long time but after a close call he finally put JJ in the past and fully becomes DEA mole into the cartel. Callie is the doctor that treats Mason when he came in as JJ and ever since has struggled with his death ever since but get a huge shock when she meets him again after his mother becomes ill and needs hospital treatment. I wasn’t sure if the first Second Skin was a fluke especially with the second book not having any main multiple partner bits but you can not beat Ophelia Bell in hot sexy romance. Absolutely love this next instalment and can not wait for next books in the series especially been tease by Flores twin bodyguards and Elle. If you haven’t checked out Ophelia Bells reverse harem series then it’s a must read and instant buy for me.
I loved this second book in what is turning out to be an epic Second Skin series. When we first met JJ he is in a bad way tortured and shot, he is fighting for his life, but still manages to proposition his doctor. Callie is said doctor and despite having a long distance boyfriend is tempted to say yes, due to a gut feeling and he is trying so hard to fight to live. With all the bad that has happened to him in this moment he only has eyes for her. Then when Callie finds out JJ died of compilations she vows to discover the truth. Great characters blended with an engaging detailed plot kept me engrossed. I loved Mason and Callie's interactions. The supporting cast are a mixture of characters from book one and new ones that I hope we will see more of. I great book I could not put down. I highly recommend this book, series and author. As a certain person once uttered about roses and names and blah blah... I may be using a different moniker now that I've been figuratively been resurrected. Yet I still seem to attract danger like money to a golddigger but hey what can I say I've been dancing the devil's tune for a long time. And it looks like I always will be; because those who are pulling my strings are very insisting. I'm also an obnoxious bullheaded man who's determined to have his cake and eat it too; and more often if I have my way. I saw her once just once and yes I wasn't in tip top shape; but things have changed now. Still life is especially way to short and as I stated before I'm an extremely determined man who's not about to let the world get in my way.

Mason's book pulls you right back into this strong family series fraught with intrigue, violence and an attraction that reignites after years of being torn apart. Callie is drawn to Mason after emergency surgery to save his life only to be told differently. She spent a lot of effort trying to find out the truth only to hit a dead end. Imagine her surprise when she discovers who is next to her on a flight to see her mother. Emotions flare to life and Callie initiates something that causes her to hide before she can face Mason again. Fate has its way and before long they are reunited and end up in a life altering situation trying to save an innocent life with the clock ticking against them. A pace while you read story that is impossible to forget! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.
This series is so intense and amazing. I have fallen for everyone of these characters and I am so jealous of those women. This one is a second chance at life and at love. Mason is a tough alpha of a man. When it comes to those he cares about he is all in to protect them. Even if it means his own death. Then there is Callie. She is a doctor and is damn good at it. She’s lost patients and that is part of the job. But one patient three years ago haunts her as she knows he shouldn’t have died and can’t get any answers on what happened to him. The story is full of bad guys like the cartel and some guys that are bad but are better than the evil they try to destroy. Expect anything when it comes to love and hate.
This may be the first book I’ve read by Ophelia Bell, but it definitely won’t be my last. This page turner is a steamy read that had me flipping the pages to see what would happen next. Callie and J.J. first meet when he’s brought into the ER with a gunshot wound, along with his brother, Maddox. Callie is assigned to J.J. and he is doing well, so much so that he asks her out. At her next shift, she’s going to agree to go out with him, but he’s no longer there. She’s told he died. Fast forward three yeats, J.J. is now Mason. No spoilers, so grab your copy and see what happens. The suspense will have you on the edge of your sear. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Callie and Mason's relationship makes for a interesting read. Their encounter three years ago has never left either of their minds. But when they meet again it's like all the years just melt away. But first Mason has to get his life back on track. And Callie might just be able to help in that cause. Twist and turns in this story make for a cannot put it down read. I loved reading this book for a simple fact that the story drew me in and the characters are written in a way that makes me feel like I'm there and I love it when that happens.

I received an ARC from the author thru Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my review. The second book in the Second Skin series is about JJ/Mason and Callie. Mason and Callie first met when he was at the hospital as JJ, who then died. They have not forgotten each other in the few years apart. There is no denying the connection the second time around. Their story is full of danger, suspense, heartache drama, family, and love. I enjoyed both of the characters and the direction the story took for Mason. I am looking forward to Valentines Day

When Callie was finishing her residency there was a man she couldn't forget. Mason was that man she couldn't forget. Mason has been undercover for the last three years when one identity died and another was born. Callie tried to look for answers but she couldn't find any. Callie was shocked when she got on a plane to see her mother and there was the man she couldn't get out of her head. I enjoyed reading this book. It had action, adventure, drama, danger, suspense, twist with some turns all mixed in. I loved the storyline and plot. Exciting Read! The characters in this series are very intriguing—so much so that you’ll find you really care about what happens to them. The series depicts a roller-coaster ride of intrigue and illustrates the dangers of being involved with one of three major crime cartels. The unexpected events will keep you turning the pages—I guarantee that this suspenseful story will keep you on the edge of your seat! I realized too late this book can not be read as a stand alone. I was overwhelmed with the huge number of secondary characters that were introduced in rapid succession but had no impact on the story, and I found the plot surrounding all the different drug cartels and bosses really hard to follow. I also don't understand why he had to fake his death. It seems like the only people who thought he was dead were his family, not the drug cartels. Seems like it should have been the opposite. But I could have missed something, because it was so hard to follow I ended up skimming it after a while.
Ophelia Bell takes to the skies with book two in her Second Skin series, Mile High.
Bell can write sexy and sweet, intricate and simple, and it appears everything we get from her is gold. After reading Mad Dog, the first book in this series, I didn’t know if she could top it, let alone move the story along in a significant way. But, she absolutely did!
I will not share any of this plot, because I want her readers to take the full emotional trip that I had. But I promise this destination will be well worth your time!
Wow, this Second Skin series just gets better and better! I absolutely adored JJ/Mason and Callie; from their first crazy encounter to their multiple coincidental reunions, their story was a thrill to read. While I didn’t think Ms. Bell could beat the heat from ‘Mad Dog’, these two definitely gave it a run for the money! This series is a family-based drama, but it’s also so much more, with action and intrigue and layers upon layers. I can’t wait for Sam and Toni’s story!
Julian Santos Jr. is legally dead and Mason Black is all any one knows. Mason meets Dr. Callie Nicolo as her patient and sparks definitely fly between them. When Callie discovers that Julian is dead she's only left with questions with no answers. A chain of events that bring Mason Black's life in a world of hurt that doesn't seem to end. Mason gets reacquainted with Dr. Nicolo after three years. Mason is on a time crunch yet has time for Callie. Can Mason and Callie begin again? Where does the time crunch leave Mason? Your answers await you in Mile High.
JJ Santos / Mason Black lives in a world of danger, betrayal, violence and death. When he comes perilously close to possibly losing his life, Mason comes face to face with Dr. Callie Nicolo. Their connection though brief will be the beginning of something special. The journey this pair take is intense, risky and sexy. The chemistry and visceral attraction drives this entertaining story. In addition there are intriguing supporting characters that add depth to the story. I enjoyed reading this book.
I have always loved Ophelia Bell’s Dragons series, but this was right up there at the top. Crime families, government, murder, kidnapping, family secrets and intrigue. There are bigger than life heroes that are hard not to love and strong women. The abusive father and the mother who takes the miss guided betrayal of a daughter. The ending will have you holding your breath and not all answers will be clear. I want more.

There is a major traitor in the mix, but who is it? When things go out of control and innocent people get killed Mason feels very guilty even though it wasn't his fault but he makes it up 2 them even in their deaths. He will do anything in his power with his partner 2 get what others want 2 help get the woman he missed yrs ago. when is protection enough between family and how his life turned out temporary. He will learn a few things from that special woman and other things hug e was least expecting 4 his future.
I was already invested from Mad Dog so I was intrigued with J.J. Aka Mason so know what’s next since Mad Dog left with a cliffhanger of sorts, just as this one did too. This one take place 3 years after Mad Dog. We get some more details with the old man Flores and his secrets including is once good friend turn rival, but we also get more in the Santos’ household. New details, secrets and new case to save...
What a wild ride this series is! Ophelia has got the jargon down pat and her writing is so descriptive that it pulls you right into the story as if you're actually there! Love Mason and Callie's story as much as I did Maddox's. The characters, all of them, are amazing and I can't wait to see where Sam's story takes us.

Mile High is the sequel to Mad Dog and follows J.J. Santos a.k.a. Mason Black. It has all of the deep character building that Ophelia Bell is known for as well as a riveting on going action story. Like all of her books it is a real page turner. Callie is an amazing character and her scenes with Mason are super steamy. It is a great read and I highly recommend it.

This is the second book in the „Second Skin“ series. In my opinion it is not necessary to read the first book „Mad Dog“ though it gives you more details about the characters appearing. I didn´t like Masom/J.J. In the first book, he seemed so thoughless about his actions, so I was a little sceptical if I should read the story or not, but I am happy I gave it a try. It is a beautiful love story with a lot of steam.
This is a well written book with strong characters and an intriguing story line. The author does a fantastic job developing the story and pulled me in with all the action and suspense. She brings a sweet and sexy romance between Callie and Mason and paints her scenes perfectly ,delivering a terrific read. I was glued to the pages reading this thrilling story line. Loved it!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
The next installment of this series did not disappoint! I fell in love with this book! The connection between Callie and Mason was just...ugh I couldn't stop reading. I love the continued story building and how more comes to light surrounding this family. Especially the little plot twist with Mason that I won't give away here. Seriously this book will keep you glued to whatever you use to read this on. Or the paperback.
