When the Rebels escaped through the portal, the planet they chose seemed like the perfect place to hide. Shrouded in flames, with underground caves and passages, Alistair knew it would give them a chance to regroup.
He was wrong.
What or who is this dark force that hunts them?
As Dreadnaughts narrow their search and come closer to the planet called Phoenix, it has become clear that their options are limited. Caught between two threats, Alistar knows only one thing: The Commonwealth never forgets or forgives.
What is his next move?
You’ll love this second installment in The Great Insurrection series, because the stakes have grown and only a brilliant gamble can save them.
I used to deliver pizza. I was pretty good at it, too. I mean, it's not that hard, but if I'm not going to brag, who is, right? Anyways, so I'm delivering pizza while I'm in college, and my boss has been in the pizza industry like six years. He's supposed to graduate from college this year, and I ask him, what are you going to do after college? We're all supposed to go out and conquer the world right after college, so this guy has to have some kind of plan.
He looked at me like I was delusional.
"I'm a writer, man."
Those four words changed my life more so than anything else ever spoken to me. I'd always written, since I was twelve participating in online-wrestling forums in which you acted out your character. I wrote because it came naturally. Never once, in the entirety of my nineteen years did I think that writing could be a career though, until a Pizza Sage said those four words to me.
So what did I do? I went home and wrote a short story and immediately understood that I was the greatest writer to ever touch a keyboard. I brought it to the Pizza Sage and he told me what anyone could have told me--it was horrible. I might be dumb, probably am, but I'm also tenacious.
I spent the next seven years writing almost every day. My first novel grew to the length of 40,000 words, then I threw it away. My second novel grew to 140,000 words. I didn't throw it away, but it was rejected about 50 times by agents. My next novel ended up at around 55,000 words, which I showed to a few friends and shelved. Then I wrote Dead Religion, which is the only reason I have an author page at Amazon.
I have had four short stories published, paid and unpaid. 'Effects May Vary' won an award that was voted on by readers, which was pretty cool.
I'm currently getting my Masters in Business at the University of Georgia's Terry School of Business. I'm doing this in order to not deliver pizzas but still keep the lights on. I have a girlfriend who will soon be my fiancé, and after ten years, I imagine she's ready for that title.
This is the second book of the series, it is a hit as well. The action ratchets up, there is more character development and great space battles. You get some backstory concerning the major characters and how their inspirations caused them to do what they do. The two things I don’t like are the books are short, I finish this one in one sitting. The second thing I do not like is keeping your enemies alive when they have done horrendous things, to me is not realistic. I am invested in the series the author says it’s going to be a nine book storyline so I suggest people get on board.
GraphicAudio - 3.75 stars. Another GA book where I found the music distracting. At one point there was cheesy retro funk music going on, weird. Also, I get irritated whenever Realm (?) says "bruv", which he says after every line. Overall plot didn't move in this book. I don't quite understand Hel's character. Is she a badass fighter or is she not? Alistair seemed to beat her with no problem, so is she holding back like she did before? I read somewhere that this is going to be a 9 book series... unless things ramp up I probably won't stay with it.
You need to spend your money on this series of books, some of the best writing I've ever seen. It's hard to describe how good this book is, how well thought out and how tied together the plot line is, and how great the main character is. These books are so good, that I might have to buy them on paperback and put them in my bookcase to make sure I keep them.
This one continues the journey of him discovering himself and what exactly he wants to do as the new leader. We get a few details of his past life and the other characters as well, but the overall story doesn't move a lot. This has great acting and I'm enjoying listening to something else other than a western, but I would appreciate a little more humor and gun play. I'll keep listening as the actors are great and the story is OK.
Wow! Alistair keeps getting bigger and tougher. This time he took over the Commonwealth's Dreadnought (a ship.) He and 4 other members of his crew against 50+ Titans. What a battle that was. I was sooo glad Alistair beat the hell out of HEL the Assassin. She was so deserving of it.
No romance, except for the undying love between Alistair and Luna, his wife, that he hasn't seen since he escaped and she was told he was dead. The F-bomb was used 21 times.
I've realized this plot is really short. Much of the story devotes a lot of time to the enemy or other characters' backstories. So, if we followed the story from A to B, it might have been a three-hour book. That being said, the book is enjoyable. I love the stakes in this book. It may not have been as grand as the last, but it was still great. Characters are just as fantastic as they were before! The actions were just as EPIC, heck I'll say even better! I am looking forward to the next book.

The second book is even better than the first, although clearly (and perhaps not too surprisingly) still setting the scene. The stage is getting bigger, and the number and depth of the cast is expanding organically. The main character is growing (literally and metaphorically) into his role. This is clearly an expansive series with plenty of action and surprises on the way in future books based on the delightful delivery in this book.
I was overjoyed to see this series is going to be 9 books long. The action is really good and pulse pounding. The characters are extremely likeable, Alistair is like a God and rises to each threat beautifully. I'm intrigued at the role Luna will play. Next book please.
A brilliant book that I could not put down. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. A strange and dark future. I have always believed the Arthur c Clark quote about advanced science being like magic and I loved the mod to it in this book. I look forward to the next one 😀
Good flow, good characters, interesting premise. I hope it doesn't take until book nine before he gets his wife back--that kind of thing annoys me beyond reason. I really hope they are fighting the Ascendant together even if they're galaxies apart. I'm fired up for book 3 and hoping the story keeps all the elements I like!
More action and adventure sees the heroes surmounting ever greater challenges. Well written and a good story, the characters are growing on me. Certainly worth reading.
Can this really be happening?! Unimaginable turn of events! Heartstopping every step of the way!! Hopefully I won’t have to wait too long for the next installment!!
Heading it to certain death to do battle is second nature to Alistair Kane. Can he save the all mother and himself this time by giving themselves up. A great book by David Beers. Waiting impatiently for the next book in this series.
Alistair is going to continue his mission. He has become a different person, Prometheus, the bringer of fire and knowledge. He is against the Commonwealth and the forces of the AllSeer. And neither will deter him from his mission. A good read.
A great new series with a brilliant new MC and looks to be an amazing universe to explore in depth. Bit space marine such as Warhammer but looks to be great so far and can't wait till i get the next book
I think the super soldier genre has been really over done. But this series is fantastic. The MC is very well done and you can't help but feel for him. The science and action are revetting.
