Does the Bible feel confusing and complicated to you? Perhaps some of it feels familiar, but overall, does it feel impossible to navigate? Maybe you recognize the stories, but you just don’t know how they all fit together. Yet they do fit together. In her unique and remarkably readable way, Angie Smith—bestselling author of What Women Fear, Mended, I Will Carry You, and Seamless—helps you tie together all the loose, disconnected threads you find in the Bible, weaving them into a beautifully crafted storyline. After reading Woven, when it comes to reading Scripture, you’ll From confused to confidentFrom lost to knowledgeableFrom separate stories to the One they are all about Because once you see the big picture, you’ll see it on every page. Every time.
First sentence: I was in my early twenties when a couple of new friends invited me to a Bible study.
Angie Smith's newest book, Woven, sets out to tell the big picture story of the Bible in a reader-friendly, super-accessible way. The intended audience she has in mind are those that are new--even completely new--to the Bible. To folks who might not know there is an Old Testament or a New Testament. To those who may not know that there are sixty-six books in the Bible. To those who may not know what chapters and verses are, who would be completely out of sorts if the pastor said turn your Bibles to John chapter three verse sixteen. It's important to keep HER intended audience in mind. Because I am sure there are folks out there who need such a book as this.
The book is focused on telling the whole big picture story of the Bible--mostly chronologically. It doesn't fit in all the details from all the books and should not be viewed as a commentary. The most time is given to the foundational book of Genesis and the four gospels.
I never got the sense that the book was trying to take the place of the Bible. (I do get that sense in some books about the Bible. Here, read this so you don't have to read the Bible.)
I would recommend to those who are new to the Bible, curious about the Bible, new to the faith, or perhaps for those that are trying to think of ways to help children or grandchildren access the Bible for the first time.
I didn't always love, love, love the narrative style. There were a few places here and there were the humor or presentation just wasn't my cup of tea. But I am not in the intended audience for which she's directly writing. One example that pops to mind is her presentation of Sarah--Abraham's wife (Sarai). Her presentation made it sound like Sarah didn't want to be a mother, to have a baby. Like she hadn't spent decades of her married life *longing* for a baby. Of course that is reading between the lines in both cases. The text doesn't explicitly state Sarah had been wanting a baby from the time she she was a young, new wife. Nor does it state that Sarah was happy, content, pleased with not having a child and would find a baby tiresome and too much too handle. But the way she presents that portion of text it was like THANKS A LOT GOD JUST WHAT I NEED AT MY AGE, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING, SURE THIS IS A BLESSING FOR ABRAHAM, HE DOESN'T HAVE TO GET UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. It just seemed a bit off. But still more often than not the narrative wasn't problematic for me. It was nice enough.
I loved this book! Angie Smith explains the Bible so well and as if you’re speaking with a friend, putting little jokes in there and everything. Hahaha. She’s not making fun of the gospel now, so don’t think that. But she adds little things here and there that you might think before you understand things correctly. I just love how she wrote and explained the Bible and if I don’t get too busy and forget ;) , I’m going to write down all the stuff I learned and want to remember from this book. I love the title WOVEN. Because this is exactly how everything in the Bible is. It’s Woven intricately piece by piece. And I love how she shows us how. I definitely recommend this book to everyone. Thank you to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to read Woven by Angie Smith and review with my honest opinion.
If you loved Seamless, you'll love Woven. It's the chapter book version with more content! Not only does Angie do an amazing job of teaching the bible as one story, her writing is like sitting down with a friend. She's so relatable and it draws you in. I am so excited to read with my small group next month!
I love this book! It goes through the full story of the Bible and focuses on the metanarrative of scripture, the thread of God’s love and plan from Genesis to Revelation. This book reminded me of the old saying “not seeing the forest from the trees” because people can sometimes focus on particular sections of the Bible and miss the larger story. I think this book does a wonderful job focusing on the big story. It’s great for new/young believers to learn God’s big story and it’s great for longtime believers. And Angie’s down to earth writing and humor make it an easy read. I think it’s a must read!
Woven Understanding the Bible as One Seamless Story by Angie Smith Back of the Book: “Does the Bible feel confusing and complicated to you? Perhaps some of it feels familiar, but overall, does it feel impossible to navigate? Maybe you recognize the stories, but you just don’t know how they all fit together. Yet they do fit together. In her unique and remarkably readable way, Angie Smith—bestselling author of What Women Fear, Mended, I Will Carry You, and Seamless—helps you tie together all the loose, disconnected threads you find in the Bible, weaving them into a beautifully crafted storyline. After reading Woven, when it comes to reading Scripture, you’ll go: From confused to, confident. From lost, to knowledgeable. From separate stories, to the One they are all about. Because once you see the big picture, you’ll see it on every page. Every time.” Impressions: She has an easy personality that is very relatable but, in this book, she tended to get sidetracked too often. It was also very reminiscent of Seamless in its goal, layout and graphics. Liked: I like that Angie is down-to-earth and humble about her journey. There is no pretentiousness as she shares the gospel and her testimony in this book. Disliked: I read Angie Smiths Seamless back in 2016 and loved it. It inspired me to read through the Bible for the first time in my life and I’m so grateful for that experience. I was eager then to read Angie’s newest book, Woven. Unfortunately, it fell flat for me. I felt parts were too off-topic and wordy in attempts to be chummy which distracted from the main point, causing confusion. I think if this was a podcast the side notes would translate better but, in a book, it is disrupting the idea we are trying to understand. She often says, “you’ll understand this later”, or “I’ll explain this later…” This also was frustrating to creating a streamlined understanding of the Bible. This is a side note of my own… I purchased the journal to go along with this book and felt it didn’t match well with the reading. I was hoping for something that asked relevant questions to what the reading was about or at least allow a timeline or flow of what I was reading. It was a generic outline repasted for each chapter. I still used the journal but it wasn’t organized in a helpful way to go back and use it easily. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
The Word of God is so rich — and it’s woven together seamlessly. I remember the first time I realized the Old Testament talked about Jesus — that Jesus, my Jesus — and how it all seemed to click. It’s ONE story.
Angie Smith tells that story in fast-forward with her signature sarcastic style (which may not be everyone’s cup of tea, mind) and a depth of insight that had me connecting dots I’d never seen before. Highly recommend whether you love the Bible or you want to but don’t know where to start!
Thoughts: When I first started reading, my initial thoughts were that the writing was super casual & there were way too many unnecessary side comments, which distracted me from the content. But as I progressed further, I don’t know whether my tolerance increased, or I started to skip over the side comments, or the content was just so interesting that I didn’t notice them, but overall, the last 2 thirds of the book were heaps easier to read.
I really enjoyed reading about Bible stories that I am already familiar with, but learning & having a clearer understanding of where they fit in the overall picture & their importance to the whole story.
I’ve come away feeling like my knowledge & understanding of the Bible has increased & I think I’ll now read the Bible from a new perspective.
I wouldn’t recommend to a brand new Christian, because of how casual the writing is, that it would be easy to mistake some of the comments as fact, this is where my prior knowledge & experience of the Bible was helpful.
This book took any remaining jumbled fragments of what I’ve always known about the Scriptures and seamlessly (ha) sorted through them, piece by piece. Smith’s writing style is engaging and lighthearted, which was so refreshing for this type of read. She gives solid contextual/historical background to each story and book she covers (and even provides visuals bc it’s a lot to break down). This is done while keeping the focus on WHY we should even care about any of it. How every little inspired detail is intentional, and how every ancient/Old Testament prophecy points directly to Christ. Brilliant 🤍
This really synthesized the Bible for me in an approachable, friendly way. It does not delve so much into the verse, but gives more of a layperson’s overview of each of the books and stories — in chronological order, which isn’t how they are found in the Bible. I already want to reread it. God is so good!
Read this about a year after doing the Seamless devotional. Went into it, not knowing how similar or different it would be. To me, it was basically like doing the Seamless workbook again, but without the work. Just reading. It was almost identical, but did seem like there were some things in this book that I didn’t remember from Seamless. I loved it just as much though, and think it’s great for anyone wanting to refresh their memory awhile after doing Seamless!
I bought this book four years ago, fully intending to read it. Over the years, I've started it multiple times but never managed to finish. I'm not quite sure why I couldn't get into it and stick with it. Determined not to give up on it, I picked it up again yesterday, and ended up reading it cover to cover in a single day. It's a wonderful book that beautifully weaves together the books of the Bible into one cohesive narrative.

"Not only is the Bible one story, it’s a story you are now a part of."
I really enjoy reading books/studies by Angie Smith. She is funny and light hearted, but there is also plenty of content to digest. My firsts experience with Angie Smith was her Bible study, Seamless. If you have not read that study, I highly recommend going through it. You will see the same theme in her newest book, Woven. In this book, Smith teaches that the Bible is one big story, from Genesis to Revelation. We often do not realize that there is such a connection between the Old and New Testament. When you are reading about all of the laws of animal sacrifice and how to live and worship in Leviticus, it is sometimes hard to imagine how any of that is relevant now. However, when we see the Bible as one big love story from God to us, with Jesus as the central character, it all comes together in such a beautiful way. You will see these connections being made and explained, and more, as you read Woven.
The book starts out in Genesis, and works through each book of the Bible in order. I enjoyed reading the summary of each book, along with the humor and personal connections that were included. Even though this is a summary of a huge and complex book, Smith's style of writing is easy and engaging. It feels like you are just chatting with a friend over coffee, as you discuss the Bible and how all of those stories come together. I love reading and studying the Bible! It is my passion and something I spend a lot of my free time on, and this book has helped improve my study time. It allowed me to see a bigger picture of how everything fits together.
“God has woven himself into his Word and into his people, and the best way for us to follow that thread is to begin tugging on it.”
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
What a great book! 4.5 stars for me. Angie Smith provides a solid overview of what you’ll find in each of the books of the Bible & it’s written in a very charming way. Her humor is so engaging that I felt like I was reading something that had been written by a friend. The idea of reading the entire Bible in one fell swoop has always seemed incredibly intimidating to me. To be perfectly honest, I’ve never had the desire. I still don’t (LOL), but this book provided a good perspective on how it’s all connected. The only thing I didn’t care for was the way the book ended. It was too abrupt & didn’t seem to mesh well with the engaging way she started the book. One minute, I was reading about Revelation & two paragraphs later the book was finished. Still, I’ll recommend this book to friends who are looking to learn more about the Bible.
To be completely transparent, at the beginning, even the middle of the book, I wasn't 100% sure if I wanted to recommend this book. I appreciate when there is humor in a book but there were points that felt like it was more "forced humor". My sister-in-law suggested we read this book together. We took notes and talked about our thoughts on what we read in each chapter (highly recommend). Ultimately, reading through the whole book... I am glad we continued despite some things causing us to lose sight of the meaning of a few chapters. We have some knowledge of the Bible, but being still newer believers, we learned a lot of things!
Three of the biggest achievements from reading this book; -We opened our Bibles A LOT just to see for ourselves about the topics that were mentioned in certain chapters. -Now we look at connections from other parts of the Bible in a different light by thinking "Could this be another one of those threads that foreshadow the birth or death of Jesus?! -The biggest one... this book encouraged us to look for ourselves! I believe she even said "Don't just take my word for it" OPEN. YOUR. BIBLES! Dig deeper and search where it is, read that book, and make connections. Look at different translations too.
I would recommend this book to someone who is either somewhat seasoned to some stories of the Bible. Or to someone who is absolutely eager and willing to open their Bible to find out the information for themselves! I find this book to be a good way to dig deeper and make connections. The Bible is overwhelming because there is so much information. This book helps us understand some of the books in the Bible and why things are significant.
If you are a believer and are curious and want more teaching on the Bible, it’s stories, and Jesus this is the book for you!
I really enjoyed reading this book from start to finish! I learned a ton about how Jesus is woven into every area of the Bible! He truly is the star, the main character, and the BOTTOM LINE of the entire Bible!
Angie Smith writes in such a charismatic way I can promise you that you will not be bored! She adds humor and real life examples that make this a compelling read! Amen to this book!!
Would have been a five stars but the book contained just a bit too much sarcasm for me . However this book is so so helpful for anyone who might be struggling to understand how the bible connects from start to finish . I would recommend it to new Christian’s or any Christian who needs a refresher !
Super approachable way to see the Bible as one complete story. I will totally recommend to new believers or anyone who sees the Bible as intimidating. Wish I had this when I was a new believer because it would’ve made the Bible easier to get a general grasp of. The consistent “hey girl” language just got a little old for me after a while, but maybe that’s some peoples’ jam.
Really enjoyed reading this. The author has a charming personality that bleeds through the book. She makes everything relatable and even uses humor. She does a great job citing the text while also not acting like she knows and understands everything. She leaves room for your questions that you may research yourself.
Angie Smith writes with humor and heart. As you read her book, it reads as if you are chatting with a friend.
“That’s because the Bible is unlike any other book in all the world.... It’s a library of books. It’s made up of historical accounts and spiritual instruction and handwritten letters and—just some outright beautiful writing—prophecy, poetry, praise songs, personal conversations.” “The books of the Bible are not entirely in order... Who is up to the task of reading a sixty-six-volume set (of anything!) and keeping up with all the information, all the characters’ lives, getting all the details down right, and synthesizing it perfectly? Without any help?”
One of my favorite Bible study that I have went through in my women’s ministry was Seamless. I still have it on my shelf and would gladly enroll in it again. Then this book came along and it is just as great as Seamless.
Angie does an amazing job of telling the Bible as a story. Reading the Bible in its entirety can be daunting and disjointed at times. Angie helps any new or seasoned Bible reader put all the pieces together to help it flow where you can see the big picture. The prophecies and how they are fulfilled helped me bring these stories a new perspective.
Many thanks to Angie Smith and B&H Publishing for this advanced copy and allowing me to review this book.
I wasn't sure about this book in the beginning. Some of the jokes and sarcastic opinions in the early chapters were a little much for me.
BUT it got better! As someone who has read some, but not all of the Bible, Angie Smith's casual tone did help with understanding and picking up on things I hadn't before. Every chapter of this book connected more dots for me and helped me to see God's story in a new way.
Woven takes you through Biblical history with your best friend by your side. Angie Smith writes and teaches the Bible in a way that is fun and easy to understand. For the new believer or the seasoned Bible buff, this book has fun facts and history to keep you interested. As someone who reads the Bible daily, I was able to see the stories from a whole different perspective. The author shows us how each book connects to the next while all pointing to Jesus. This book is perfect to keep with your Bible study tools, beside your nightstand or as a gift to any reader. (I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review.)
This book makes the Bible very personal. It not only explains and informs, by explaining how the Old and New Testaments work together, it more importantly points readers to Jesus. Very well done.
The book in general was good. Began reading it to try and figure out where to start reading Bible to better understand it. But author puts too much small talk, funny business (idk how to explain it) in the chapter which make it kind of hard to follow at times. But overall good.
I have never read a book like this one. I had no idea how the author could possibly write a book about the entire Bible. But she did and she did it well. It was an easy read that makes me want to dig deeper into God’s Word.
I was blown away by the bible study Angie Smith did, Seamless. I loved her transparency, her humor, and the way she put things together for people that did not grow up in church and/or if they did how to tie things together from Old Testament and New. Likewise, I appreciated her use of visual aids with maps, pictures, and other tools to help bring these stories to life.
Furthermore, I enjoyed this book as the author continues the same style of writing and teaching about how bible characters relate to one another and God. Helping readers see the whole story, see the bigger picture. Here’s a peek at her humor in the midst of a bible story. Angie talks about Adam, Even and the Serpent and the disillusion of perfection and the reality of our true condition after the fall. She says,…”God’s first recorded words, “Where are you?”
“Rest assured, he was not looking down into the garden like, “Oh my gosh, these are my first people, and I’ve already lost them. PERFECT.” No, he knew where they were. He wasn’t asking about their physical location; he was asking about the posture of their hearts toward him.”
I highly recommend this for everyone. I know it is one I’ll be reading over again. There is so much in here.
