Translated as First Frost by English fan translators, this is a related novel to the super popular Netflix cdrama, Hidden Love. Hidden Love's female lead is this novel's male lead's younger sister. I'm giving this a solid 4.5 star because the length was just right and most importantly, this story was SO cute and SO sweet 🥺
I rate this romance on the level of the romance in 长风渡(Long Wind Crossing?) by Mo Shu Bai because of how very well-written it was. Beyond a romance, this is a story about a traumatized and emotionally wounded/withdrawn person slowly healing and finding connection. I really felt like this story transported me away.
I also appreciated how the female lead is written as being comfortable with wanting someone and with desire. Such a nice change instead of the somewhat repressed/embarrassed/ashamed attitudes in other cnovels.
English title: Hard to Please / First Frost 3.5 stars
Been meaning to read this novel for a while, since I really liked the sister novel about the ML's younger sister. Now that I've read the story, I'm excited for the drama adaptation (called First Frost) to come out, hopefully this year!
The story follows our FL, Wen Yifan, who due to some circumstances ends up moving in with her high school classmate and old crush, Sang Yan. They both liked each other in high school, but because some things happened to the FL, they had a falling out right before graduation and haven't kept in touch for several years.
When she moves back to the same city where they went to high school for work, she coincidentally runs into him at the bar he owns and they have a series of awkward encounters. Eventually they end up as temporary roommates, and that's when their relationship slowly builds up again. Add in her habit of sleepwalking whenever she's unhappy and his tendency to exaggerate everything and tease her, and you've got yourself a solid recipe for a modern romance story.
The FL has gone through a lot of during her high school years because of her family circumstances, and because of that, she doesn't have a lot of confidence and wants to keep everything to herself to not bother others around her and especially Sang Yan. This leads to a lot of miscommunication (and frustration on my part) even after they get together, until one day Wen Yifan reaches her breaking point and reveals everything to Sang Yan. And as part of her healing process, she cuts off all ties with her family and counts only Sang Yan and his family as her "family", which I 100% agree with. Her mom and her uncle's family really failed her when she was in high school, and they don't deserve to be a part of her life now.
A lot of the story is told through flashbacks to their interactions from high school, and it's clear how much Sang Yan helped her back then. It was kinda cute how he was always there for her and how he stood up for her against their slandering classmates. What's crazy to me is how he kept being there for her throughout her college years even after their fight. He even bought all of the newspapers from another city when she was working there as a reporter. If that's not dedication then I don't know what is. He kept his promise to her to stick around in her life and watch over her, even if she's not aware of it.
If you're looking for a cute fluffy novel, then this isn't it. That was my expectation going into this story and perhaps why I was a little bit disappointed. The FL has a lot of issues that she's working through, so she remains closed off to the ML for most of their relationship. Despite their previous close relationship in high school, when they meet again the FL treats him almost as a stranger she happens to be rooming with. She doesn't have a lot of confidence in herself, but I'm glad that once she realizes her feelings, she decides to proactively chase after him in her own way.
I mentioned this earlier, but I was really frustrated by her lack of communication after they get together. For a while they don't bring up the past, and she tries to take care of all her problems on her own without involving Sang Yan. Of course there's a reason for it; when her past trauma is revealed at the end, it helped to frame her earlier actions, but still I can't say I really enjoyed the romance. To me their relationship really starts after she tells him everything, but that happens pretty close to the end of the novel. This line from the novel sums up her behavior really well: She just wanted to be good to him, to keep the unsightly parts of her life far away from him, to make him feel that being with her was an easy and ordinary thing, to make him want to stay with her forever.
I really liked Sang Yan's character though. It's a huge difference from how he was portrayed in the Hidden Love drama, where he was goofy and immature. In the story he's super arrogant but in an endearing way, like I can't believe he just said that but it's such a Sang Yan thing to say. That makes his bragging about their relationship to his friends all the funnier later, cause he goes from a confident man to someone who seems awfully whipped by his girlfriend.
This story is written at the same time that the events of the Hidden Love novel take place, so it was interesting to see Sang Zhi and Duan Jiaxu's relationship from Sang Yan's point of view, and Sang Zhi makes fairly frequent appearances in this story as well.
More than anything, it's the moments where Wen Yifan confronts her family that struck a chord with me rather than any of her interactions with Sang Yan, so I'll end my review with the scene where she finally talks to her mom at the end:
“You made me constantly doubt myself,” Wen Yifan murmured, “Why? Why is it like this?”
Why indeed.
Compared to me, my mother loves other people’s children more.
Where exactly am I lacking?
Did I do something wrong?
Am I not good enough?
Am I not worthy of being loved at all?
“Why is it that in this world, the mother who should love me the most,” Wen Yifan stared at the woman in front of her, her eyes reddening slightly, her words becoming uncontrollably heavy, “doesn’t love me at all?”
reading this while listening to the audio drama was an entire experience. this heart-wrenching second chance romance had me crying uncontrollably at 3am. ive never read about a mmc who is as thoughtful and devoted as sangyan. he is the standard. the greenest green flag. i refuse to date anyone unless I can find someone like him irl 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
La relación de Sang Yan y Wen yifan got me giggling and kicking my feet.
Really wanted to be so crazy over this book that everyone has been crazy over at douyin, but other than the last half of the second book, everything seemed pretty okay for me. Don’t get me wrong, it was still good, but not the book that made me go WOW THIS IS CRAZY type y know
One thing I really liked about this novel is how both of them work so hard to protect each other, to do everything in their power to make sure that they were worthy of the love the other gave them. She stopped avoiding things and started running in his direction, he never once asked her what happened and what changed her mind but just kept his hands held up to welcome her into his world.
I really never expected someone like sang yan to be capable of being so 长情, I can’t believe someone like him liked someone since high school and still liked her this deeply despite being so brutally rejected as an adult. He was still the youth that promised her to be always by her side and always accompanying her (even if she wouldn’t find out) during her darkest and happiest time. He bought newspaper and kept the articles that she has written since her very first days as a reporter, he went to her city countless times and kept the two way tickets in a box, just like how he boxed up his feelings for her just because he didn’t want her to be unhappy due to his presence. He’s just too,,, unreal to even imagine
However wenyifan was a character that I really empathized with, no one wanted her since her dad died, and she lived her life trying her best not to get anyone in trouble because of her, not wanting to beg anyone or rely on anyone for her well-being, she gave up her lifelong dream of dance just because her mom didn’t fight hard enough for her, she had to grow up without a loving environment because her family were a group of assholes. Thank god, she found her light and decided to pull onto him before he left for good. It was so touching when they both finally got together, and when she finally got pulled out from the shadow that trapped her when she was young.
Overall I would say I really enjoyed the way this was written, it was neither too rushed or draggy, and sang yan was honestly too big of a heartthrob!! ALSO I REALLY LOVED THE SANG ZHI AND DUAN JIAXU CAMEOS HERE ARGHHHHHHHH
The romance was super sweet. Sang Yan is literally the definition of a green flag. I just don't know how I feel about Still, the way he wholeheartedly accepts Wen Yifan for who she is melted me. He keeps up a cocky and confident front, but beneath that he's willing to humble himself again and again for her, and for someone as prideful as him, it says something. His love is so intense it almost borders on obsessive, but the execution was so skillful that it never actually read that way.
Wen Yifan, also, is such a refreshing FMC. She’s strong and independent, but not in the “loudly authoritative” way you often see in romance novels. She has a quiet strength and gentleness that make her feel so unique. My heart ached for everything she’s endured, but I loved her growth and how her relationship with Sang Yan helped both of them become better people.
And since I'm talking about characters, might as well mention that I thought some of the side characters really brought life to this story. So many of them stood out. Wen Yifan’s coworkers were warm and fun to read about, and Su Hao An completely stole the show for me. His outrageous one-liners and comedic relief balanced the (at times) heavier emotions perfectly.
Some scenes I particularly enjoyed were, of course, when Yifan confessed to Sang Yan on HIS birthday, and the scene when Yifan finally sorted out all the past misunderstandings and issues with Sang Yan, via HEALTHY COMMUNICATION! I really enjoyed that.
Another thing I'd like to note about the book, which I'm not sure whether or not is true about all Chinese novels, is that there were a lot of time skips, as well as page breaks between chapters. It took a while to get used to, but I quite liked that change of pace. It felt nice, but at times I wished the time skips were more clear. Sometimes I'd get confused because the story would just abruptly jump forward like 3 months haha. I also really liked the flash backs to stuff that happened between Yifan and Sang Yan back in their high school days. I thought it was very fun.

Light novel with some heavy plot - still not hard to read. Romantic scenes a bit old-fashioned. Not quite motivating to read during a few chapters toward the end, not sure how the story loses its interesting points either, maybe not much to discover anymore. A little less fun to read than the prequel-偷偷藏不住 but still quite on the same level.
p.s. 偷偷藏不住 is also an old-fashioned romantic story. The romantic scenes there can be a bit more 肉麻.
p.p.s. The author has some complex with Adam's apple. She's too concious with the MLs' Adam's apple in both books trying to imply the MLs' sexual desire each time their Adam's apple moves.
It was a bit slow at the beginning but once the story picked up, it was so good. I cried so many times when reading the second half of the book. Mostly I cry when there are sad scenes in the book but in this one, I also cried tears of happiness for our FL and ML 😭
This is so heart wrenching yet so heartwarming at the same time! I love love their relationship like how they support each other, how they’re there for their partner 🤧 My boy Sang Yan and my girl Wen Yifan really deserve each other and live happily ever after 😭❤️
I can’t believe I finally finished this! 🥹 I was delaying reading the last chapter because I didn’t want it to end. This is easily one of my favorite stories ever.
Wen Yifan’s character development was so nice to see. She started off guarded and hesitant to trust others, but throughout the story, she gradually learned to open up and embrace happiness, and she treasures her relationships. She’s one of my favourite characters. Also, Sang Yan is easily one of my favorite male leads!
I read both Hidden Love and First Frost in the original chinese text and I much prefer First Frost. Hidden Love just felt a little bit juvenile to me (don't come at me) and no matter how amazing Jiaxu is I am still irked at the fact that he is quite a lot older than her lol. First Frost on the other hand plunges me into a different reality about this sacrificial love that Sangyan has for Yifan like bro did not have to do all that but he is a damned fool in love and that's so pure.
