Throughout this splendid book, grounded in the intimate joys and trepidations of new motherhood, there is an undercurrent of foreboding about the kind of world we are bequeathing to our children-a world ravaged by environmental degradation and political strife. But Meghan Sterling's unflinching depiction of the imperiled world that her daughter will likely inherit is tempered by the abiding lessons of her Jewish ancestral history, a reverence for the natural world in all its seemingly unstoppable splendor, and an unquenchable hope that the future is ours to ". . . to you I bequeath / all the courage / of birds and flowers, / water and stones, / to love enough, / to love with the toughness of trees." -Richard Foerster
Beautiful poems by Meghan Sterling that touch on travel, grief, love, becoming a parent, and in particular becoming a parent when the world is (as it ever was) a mess and climate change is a genuine threat. It's been a while since I really got into a book of poetry and this makes me want to read more. Absolutely lovely.
Really enjoyed each poem in this collection because of the word pairings and imagery. Every poem made me see a beautiful event. Even when giving a sobering account of the precarious state of our natural environment, the poems were not angry, but wistful. Her words were those of a gentle mother warning her child to protect the Earth.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy seeing motherhood celebrated and the Earth respected.
