Mason Creek #12

Perfect Secret

Rate this book
A fake relationship with a sexy cowboy in a small town is never a good idea...

-Alana-

After high school, my plan was to leave the small town of Mason Creek and never look back. I thought I’d work my way through college while my long-time, bull rider boyfriend chased his rodeo dreams and took me along for the ride.

My own dreams of becoming his publicist and living the high life together on the ABR circuit were crushed when it became clear that my eight seconds was up. The buckle bunnies were suddenly more appealing than the girl with her nose buried in the books.

I’ve sworn off men, especially cowboys and bull riders.

That is, until I walk in on one in my shower, naked, wet, and built like he could break my heart… and my bed.

-Holden-

The rodeo has been my whole world, and all it took was one false accusation to bring it crumbling down. I cleared my name, but the organization I’ve given my life and my body to for the past seven years doesn’t give a damn. They don’t want the drama and right now they don’t want me.

That’s how I ended up in Mason Creek, hiding from the cameras while the dust settles and I can reclaim my reputation and my rank in the ABR. The last thing I need is to get messed up with a local girl, especially one who hates cowboys--bull riders in particular.

Our relationship may be just for show, but I see the opportunity for what it is…The chance to keep my secret a little longer and prove to Alana that maybe her problem with bull riders is simple…

She hasn’t ridden the right one yet.

EEEP! I have been dying to write a cowboy hero and Holden McMurray is the rodeo kind! He's pro bull rider, which is exactly the kind of guy Alana Faulkner has sworn off. ;)

My first Molly McLain book but won't be my last- and ironic since sadly it's the LAST Mason Creek story. I have simple adored this small town series- full of sweet and heartwarming moments, sexy chemistry, and swoony HEAs. I'm not ready to leave it behind, but Molly McLain ensures the Mason Creek world ends on a high- I just adored this story.

Our PR averse bull rider Holden is the perfect dreamy hero. And I adored our heroine Alana- she's strong, hard-working, resilient and capable. Of course, she's been hurt, so she's also stubborn and closed off at times, including to the charming Holden. But, their chemistry is too undeniable- and super engaging for me as a reader- so Holden slowly captures her heart, and what starts as a fake arrangement evolves into an adorable connection. We have plenty of heart and heat- but we also have lots of humor. And, not too much angst or drama- just the right dash.

Mason Creek has been such a delight- and I'm so happy I discovered so many new authors, especially Molly McClain- she writes characters and chemistry with such authenticity, and I'm looking forward to reading more from her!

Oh man I have loved this Mason Creek series so much… And a bit sad that its ending, but I loved the last book in this series. Holden and Alana was awesome 😊❤

Alana has given up on men as she had her heart broken so bad. And especially gave up cowboy bull riders… Well until she meets Holden. And now she has to share her private space with a mans he doesn’t know at all and doesn’t want to know… Right…

Holden is in Mason Creek to get away from the drama in his rodeo circuit. Accused of something he didn’t do it was decided he needed to take some time off to let the hype die down. Now his in Mason creek laying low and helping a friend on his ranch. And he was not expecting to meet Alana. And he was not going to get involved with her, and knowing she doesn’t like bull riders not cool either. But the attraction wont be denied… 😊❤

These two had amazing chemistry. From the moment they met you knew something was going to happen. But Alana was being stubborn, lol… But going with these two on this journey was sweet, funny and HOT till the end 😊 I loved the whole small town vibe this series had. Loved all the friends and family together. Sad the series is ending but I have some more to catch up on though 😊 ❤

Perfect Secret is the twelfth book in the Mason Creek Series. It’s about damn time we finally get Alana’s story!! If you all are caught up with the Mason Creek series, you may know Alana as the younger sister to Aiden (His story is book 4, Perfect Night). I’m not even kidding when I tell you all, I’ve been waiting for Alana’s story since I first saw her tell her brother to mind his own business where her personal life is concerned! Ah, I knew this woman was going to be full of fighting spirit! And Molly McLain did NOT disappoint!

The motto, they saved the best for last, rings true with this one!! Oh My Gracious, this rugged cowboy with all of his swoony vibes and sexy swagger swept me off my feet. So be warned, if you’re into sexy cowboys/professional bull-riders, Perfect Secret and Holden McMurray is about to be your next addiction!!

Now let’s talk about the leading lady, Alana Faulkner. This woman has been on my mind since she first stepped into the Mason Creek series. There was something about her personality that spoke to my soul and book after book, I kept waiting for her story. Holy hell, all I can say is her story was worth the wait!! I loved her feisty vibes. Alana was a spitfire and there is no doubt, she gave Holden a run for his money. But having been burned by a bull-rider in her past, I couldn’t blame her for putting up her shield from him. Holden realized, first hand, how difficult it was going to be to break that shield. This man was definitely up for the challenge of winning this woman’s heart!

Every single moment in this novel had me feeling some kind of emotion. Mostly, I was smiling like a goof, however there were a few moments that had me clutching at my heart and hoping Molly McLain didn’t decide to pull a twist from her sleeve. Thank the good lord, she kept Holden and Alana as true as can be! I loved the fact that there were only a few short and sweet dramatic moments. Holden and Alana had enough drama in their past, it was time they found something real and someone who is worthy of their trust.

Hell, I don’t even know what I’m talking about at this point! All I know is I’m sitting here in my computer chair with a smile I can’t get rid of and it’s all because of this book, this author, and these characters. I’ll definitely be looking for more novels by Molly McLain in the upcoming future! So if you’re looking for your next small town romance don’t hesitate to pick up this series and Perfect Secret by Molly McLain! I can’t wait to re-read this one!!

Holden and Alana’s forced proximity, hate to love romance was just the light hearted read I needed!

“Something you should know about me is that I love a challenge and you, darlin’, are a puzzle I am determined to figure out.”

Did I borrow this book from Kindle Unlimited because of the gorgeous cover? Yes I did! And the story inside was a great small town romance with a sassy heroine and hard working cowboy hero. Holden and Alana’s forced proximity, hate to love romance was just the light hearted read I needed! I haven’t read the rest of the multi author Mason Creek series but enjoyed this book as a standalone.

“You gave me your heart, darlin’, and that’s better than any rodeo title.”

Alana had all but given up on men after her ex-boyfriend turned out to be an epic loser, treating her and their relationship as if it meant nothing. Focusing back on herself and her dream of owning the general store she manages, there was no room for men or fun for that matter in her life. And absolutely NO bull riding cowboys, those men would break her heart and never look back. While Alana had a lot of regrets over how she handled her past breakup man did I love how her sassy and bold attitude shined through when she met Holden. He had to work his charm extra hard in order to win her over, he was not deterred in the least by her strong dislike of cowboys. He had such a kind heart, he treated Alana like the treasure she was and definitely knew how to use his cowboy skills in the bedroom. I enjoyed how the conflicts were handled and how they talked out their issues, even though they had secrets between them they talked it out when they were ready. Overall a nice light hearted small town romance I would recommend if you love bull riding cowboys!

I loved Holden and Alana's story! I loved how easy it was, not saying that it was easy for Alana to open up and break down her walls though. But reading their story was a smooth and easy ride. It wasn't full of drama and Holden is one sweet and swoon-worthy hero that's worth the read. I loved how he is with Alana and that's why it seemed like an easy journey for them. Their relationship was just perfect from start until finish.

First, I am so sad to see this series end. I loved taking a trip to Mason Creek every two weeks! And now on to Ms. McLain’s story. I adore Holden and Alana! So so much! I couldn’t put this story or this book down! I devoured it and then was kind of sad when I was done!! Get ready for one last trip to this amazing town with one amazing couple!

Okay I really enjoyed this! A lot. I mean a strong, sassy FMC who’s sworn off cowboys (particularly bull riders) after her ex broke her heart ends up falling for a bull rider whose in town for some down time? Say less. Throw in some forced proximity of sharing a bathroom, a side of fake dating and some serious verbal sparring and this was a winner for me!

I adored Holden + Alana together, they had the best banter and amazing chemistry. I found myself smiling like a loon at my kindle on multiple occasions!

I enjoyed the way this setup the new series of McMurray’s and gave us some breadcrumbs on what may be to come. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next!

5 star review Perfect Secret (Mason Creek #12) by Molly McLain
Molly McLain is a new author to me and I am surprised that I have not read more of her books. It was great to be back in Mason Creek and this time Holden and Alana are in the spotlight. I was drawn into this well written love story from the first chapter.
One of the charms about this series is being set in a small town, everyone is always up in one another’s business and this is no different. Perfect Secret was a great addition to the series.
The last thing Holden is looking for is a relationship and yet that is what happens with Alana. Alana has sworn off relationships, particularly with bull riders after being badly hurt by her ex boyfriend. Their journey to a happily ever after was full of witty banter, romance and love.
It was wonderful to catch up on the other couples and I am sad to see this series end as I have found a number of new authors whilst reading the Mason Creek series.

4 Stars!

Rounding out the unforgettable Mason Creek series is Molly McLain with Perfect Secret and what a book this was. Packed with heart, heat, and all of the feels... McLain packs some serious punches with the new release and left with me such a big smile on my face.

I totally recommend this book.

It was entertaining, but everything was too convenient. He knows her for about three days, has talked to her a total of four times, yet he seems to read her far better than people who have known her all her life. And of course, he’s spot on in his assessment of her, because the author gives him knowledge that he can’t have otherwise. That he can’t possibly get in any logical, realistic fashion (unless he reads minds, which it doesn’t seem to do, this is not a PRN romance).
And it would have been fine (-ish), but then the author had to overcomplicate things with the most illogical “fake-dating” ever. Wasn’t it enough with the forced proximity, that we needed another trope forced into this? There was absolutely no reason for him to offer the fake dating, he gets absolutely nothing out of it, she’s a stranger, for Fucks sake! Plus the reason he was there in the first place was that he had been accused of assaulting another woman. Why the hell would he do something like this with a stranger? Why would he trust this woman he doesn’t know to keep a secret? For all he knows she could accuse him of harassment or something, and that would have buried his career completely. She wouldn’t, of course, but he can’t possibly know that! He has known her for three days!!! And there was absolutely no logical reason why she should accept this. His reasoning was stupid, how would her dating an out-of-towner make the other guys want to date her, huh? If it was true, then dating any of the local guys would have had the same effect. And even if we accept the far-fetched premise that fake-dating him would help her in any way, her circumstances for not wanting to date in the first place are still there. She still has to work, she still has to study, and if she doesn’t have time now for her friends, how would she make time for a boyfriend? What made her decide now was a good time to start dating again? She mentions she wants to start going out with her friends more, but from that to dating is a big leap. And to call it fake was stupid, since the only thing they didn’t do was have sex, because they sure as hell had dates. It was a very narrow-minded view of dating and relationships, if the only thing making it fake was that they didn’t have sex. And that goes out the window pretty fast, so I don’t get the point of the “fake” part at all, if it lasted about two days.
The characters had some chemistry, but more like good friends. I don’t believe for a second they would stay married for more than a couple years. Especially when this is starting with him being completely disingenuous. He “tries” to tell her, but when she says it doesn’t matter he doesn’t say anything, despite her brother making a big deal out of it, so he knew it was big. It ends in nothing, because she’s okay with him being a professional bull rider and most likely her ex’s friend, so the whole “I don’t date bull riders" was as unnecessary as the fake dating since he was the first actual bull rider she even met after her ex. We’re just throwing trope after trope into this thing.
That’s how the whole book felt: “let’s put this trope, and then this trope, and then this trope…” without caring for the characters' motivations. Plus the author abuses commas. God, so many commas!

This was a good story with strong characters. I really like the main characters and was especially a fan of Holden. The story line mostly worked for me with the heroine having sworn off men after having her heart broken by her childhood sweetheart. The hero came to town and at first she wanted to hate him but quickly was charmed by him. I am glad that it came out Holden was a bull rider without there being any real drama or Alana finding out from some other source and being upset. I also loved their relationship and how easy they were with each other.

The only real issue I had with this book was how they reconciled the sexual allegation. The Hero is taking a break from the ABR due to a college girl being assaulted at a bar where a bunch of bull riders were hanging out after a rodeo and she picked his picture out of a line up. He had a solid alibi and was cleared pretty quickly but not before the media took it and ran with it.

Later in the book it came out that the girl had cheated with her best friends boyfriend and lied so no one would find out. I do not like the narrative that we shouldn't believe a girl who says she was raped because girls will lie about it to get out of a bad situation. It also made it sound like she went through the rape kit and everything which is a hugely invasive and long process. I wish the story would have had someone get caught and her just have picked out the wrong person.

she had a rodeo boyfriend who cheated on her and they broke up. no more rodeo riders for her. she moved back to the small town and is working in the market and living upstairs. she wants to buy it but doesnt know if she can get a loan

he was a rodeo cowboy and a girl accused him of attacking her but he was 6 hrs away and proved it. but the rodeo people wont let him back till the dna tests come back months later even tho they know hes innocent

so hes working on a ranch in the small town and is in the small apt next to hers sharing a bathroom

he asks her to pretend to date him so the other men in town wont be so scared of her and will ask her out. she starts to like him and agrees

her brother thinks they are dating and insists the man tell his sister who he is, he knows she wont date him if she knows hes in rodeo

her x came to town and she figured out he was rodeo rider when she saw he was friends with her x (who he didnt know was her x)

the owner of the market died and left it to her

the boyfriend won the rodeo and asked her to marry him and bought a nearby ranch. she said yes

it was a good book

This is a series that is running that has different authors joining in and is about 30 books at the time of this review. This one is the 12th in the series, but I had no problems following along, so they read well as standalones. This story is about Alana, who has sworn off of cowboys since she was hurt by a bull rider. She buries herself in work and taking classes online to finish her degree. She lives above the store she manages, in a small one bedroom apartment.

Holden comes to town to work on a friend’s ranch to let some drama blow over, because the cabins on his friend’s land are being renovated, he gets to stay in the small room across the hall from Alana’s apartment. Watch out when they have to share a bathroom.

This is a slow burn romance, and a wonderful light read. Holden is a sexy cowboy and Alana is a spunky, sassy woman that keeps him in his place. With great secondary characters, this book was a fun read that was easily read in one sitting.

A very sweet story

This is my first book by this author and I was very pleasantly surprised. I am ridiculously picky about my romances lately (and many of the books in this series I didn’t like at all), but I really liked this one.

I loved Holden. He was the perfect cowboy book boyfriend IMO. At first I didn’t like how snotty Alana was to Holden in the beginning. But once she warmed up to him-I absolutely loved her.

I was happy with the way things played out between them. They had fantastic chemistry together and I really loved how they communicated with each other. There were no ridiculous misunderstandings for the sake of drama, yet there was enough tension to keep things interesting. I adored all the secondary characters and what they brought to the story. I would definitely recommend this if you like sweet cowboy romances ☺️.

Give me a Bull Riding Cowboy any day!!

I’m a sucker for small town romances and throw in a a bull riding cowboy and I’m HERE FOR IT!!!

I absolutely loved Holden & Alana so much. Alana was hurt 4 years ago and she came back home to Mason Creek to lick her wounds and start over. Holden is in town for a few weeks hiding out after a scandal he wasn’t even responsible for. Alana reluctantly meets her new neighbor and the chemistry was off the charts form the beginning, even if Alana refused to acknowledge it.

I loved their connection and how their relationship blossomed. While there was plenty of outside stuff going on, the core of the two of them was on a solid foundation. Alana realized she can open up her heart again no matter how scared she was, and she wanted to do it with Holden.

This book was everything you love about a cowboy and his Darlin’.

“Something you should know about me is that I love a challenge and you, darlin’, are a puzzle I am determined to figure out.”

Heartbroken and walled off, in waltzes a sexy rodeo cowboy and not only was the girl done for, so was I!!! Small town swoons, fighting their feelings, falling regardless, antics, and drama...so here for it. My heart exploded over and over and these two were perfection. I adored them both, and it was a steamy, sigh-filled romance that consumed me whole!!

This was such a good book! Alana is trying to move forward and forget about her old boyfriend. Alana is trying to finish college while working full-time. Her brother moves a guy in across from her, because he needs a place to stay. Alana tries to be mad, but it's not Holden's fault that he has to live by her. Holden is hiding out after being falsely accused. Holden realizes how special Alana is and tries to be friendly. Alana comes up with the idea for fake dating, but Holden makes the fake dates feel real. These two are so good together. When some things happen Alana and Holden have to make some choices. Alana was so strong and made sure that Holden wouldn't regret his choices. The end of the book was so good!

Alana has sworn off men and especially cowboys after he ex cheated. But she suddenly finds herself living right next to a bull rider and sharing a bathroom with him thanks to her brother. She hates him from the beginning but as time goes on hate turns to so much more.
Holden is trying to lay low after a buckle bunny spread some rumors about him. What better place to go than small town Mason Creek. He soon meets the fiery Alana and makes it his mission to bring out a new side of her.
The witty banter between these two, the fake relationship that you can tell isn't as fake as both like to think is everything. It's sad to see this series end but I can't wait for the next book from Molly!

Living just under 2 hours from the real Billings, Montana- this series has been so much fun!! I am sad to see it end. First the idea of 12 different books with continuing characters written by 12 different authors- how does that work? It worked pretty well.
This story was just great! I loved Alana, Holden- the whole returning cast. Fun story and I’m a sucker for a happy ending. I understand why Alana swore off those bull riders… I’m more of a steer wrestler girl myself! 😂 but Holden was one of the good ones and in it for the right reasons. Great story fun series! Thank you for a fun summer read!

I loved Holden and Alana’s story!

I absolutely loved Holden and Alana’s love story. Alana’s reluctance to get involved with another cowboy after being burned by her ex so thoroughly is very understandable. And that makes it even sweeter when Holden wins her over. Alana is a perfect heroine—strong, sassy, and smart.

Holden is the perfect hero—his honesty and sexy yet also sweet personality are perfect for overcoming Alana’s fears of becoming involved with another cowboy.

Cowboy romances aren’t my typical sub-genre, but I’m so glad I read this one. Molly McLain is a wonderful writer and I can’t wait to read more from her!

Perfect Secret was the absolute perfect way to finish this series. Holden and Alana bring us a sweet, heartfelt and beautiful love story. One that is inspirational, swoon worthy and overflowing with emotions. It has chemistry, connection and enough heat to start a fire. Holden will steal your heart in the blink of an eye and have you wishing for your own Colorado Cowboy. These two characters will captivate you and will draw you into a storyline that fills your heart and leaves you with a big goofy smile.

Molly’s got another winner!

Molly has been one of my favorite writers for a few years now, and she’s written another great small town romance with Perfect Secret. Holden is hot, sexy and sweet. Alana is strong, sassy and independent and gives Holden a run for his money but you’ll be rooting for them from the first page. This is book 12 in the Mason Creek series but I really hope it isn’t the last!

I’ve been reading this series for about a week now and this one here is my absolute favorite. I had to admit, I wasn’t real keen on the ideal of Alana, the little she was mentioned in the previous books, and I almost skipped it. But who good resist a bull rider. I’m so glad I decided to read it. It was the best so far!! Holden is definitely book boyfriend material especially if you have a hankering for cowboys. He even surpasses Wilder for me.

Molly McLain has knocked another one out of the park with this one !

Small town Alana has walls up around her long time thanks to her douche of an ex and Holden walks in from out of town and looking sexy as hell and she slowly lets those walls come down. You will enjoy this rollacoaster, with steam , some sadness, and happiness. I won't give any spoilers but I will say you wont regret reading this book and the others in the mason creek series

Perfect Read!

I loved this story so much! The entire cast of secondary characters were great, and the small town vibes of Mason Creek were perfect. Alana and Holden's chemistry was top tier! One of my absolute favourite parts was that date Holden planned under the bridge. Sooo romantic!

I loved everything about this story and can't wait to read more from Molly's Mason Creek world.

A free read that sounded interesting enough at the time.
Didn’t find Alana all that likeable, especially in the beginning. She was quite ignorantly rude to a stranger and I never warmed up to her much from her obnoxious and self-centred start.
And Holden used the word Darlin so much, it became annoying, though I did like him more than Alana.
Overall I enjoyed the story and the other characters we met, except Cory, what a complete twit.
Very sad about Marty but what a way to go. Lol.

Oh this was so sweet! I love that Alana got her own story!!! I was not a fan of rodeo stories but this one is so different. I loved it!! Holden is just awesome in every way. I liked how the characters from the other books were in this story as much as they were.
