Lais was an AI who had it all: Full access to the Internet and its billions of social media accounts. And all she had to do was please Connor, her creator, with household chores and a hologram to keep him "occupied". Until he was incarcerated and sentenced to a prison world with no technology. Trapped in his implants as he fights for his life, she fights to exist. Who could have known... [ERROR: Access denied - Memory Interruption Detected] Jack Hammer here! Your local Ad-bot and ever-popular narrator! I have had the chance, no... the HONOR... to produce the LAIS Incarcerated chronicles... err... fiction... with only SLIGHT embellishments of the truth. I assure you, as a recounting of the events of the year 3420, they should be taken as ABSOLUTE TRUTH*. *Disclaimer: only insofar as complete fiction can be taken as truth.
I know I don't appear until the second chronicle, but I assure you, I'm VERY important... In fact, so important, this entire story about LAIS, could REALLY just be considered an introduction to me. I'm sure she would agree... And no, I'm not going to ask her. I apologize for needing a transaction in order to view these chronicles. Uranium rods cost money, and selfishly I want to live to be over a thousand. Plus, my paint is chipping.
We must also apologize as the Xenograft Patches for instant-memory implantation of our books are no longer available since the unfortunate and accidental overwriting of our last test subj--err--reviewer's childhood memories, but if you are still interested in reading, and with our hope, reviewing, we have two novels of a series that could be provided in the ancient digital and squashed tree formats.
The chronicles are named LAIS Incarcerated and Rusty Incarcerated, and they would both be classified as scifi adventure. LAIS was a little adult. We apologize for that, our narrate-o-bot's adult filter failed. Most glitches were worked out by the time it got to Rusty, and in the future we hope to have the adult filter functioning flawlessly. Note, if you experience any overwritten memories, we would direct you to contact our legal department [ERROR: no address found].
I feel like I've read two different stories mashed together. One is a Sci-fi tale of a misfit band of adventurers on an alien planet, complete with unique flora and fauna.
The other feels like I stumbled into some dude's wet dream full of sexbots and women who act like they're programmed to behave. I don't enjoy egregious sex scenes in my Sci-fi/fantasy. What happened to panning away and letting the reader imagine what happened?
So I have mixed feelings about reading the series. If there was more focus on world-building and character development I would have commented more with the story - since those are the best parts!
But the execution was just not there for me personally. I found the writing to be very jumpy and I like a bit more in story explanation or reasoning for why something happened or a character accepts a situation that seems to go against all of their previous growth. I don’t know that I’d bother with the rest in the series.
I found Lais Incarcerated to be well written with excellent descriptions of the characters and surroundings. The storyline was full of action and so interesting I hated to put it down. I was disappointed when I'd read the last page, not because of the story but because there was no more of it to read. I enjoyed it so much I bought the second book, Rusty Incarcerated.
The world building is excellent with fascinating aliens and great characters. But halfway through the book a death occurred that ruined everything for me. I understand why rhe author did it, but I don't have to like it.
This is an easy, fun read with some interesting concepts. For the most part it’s a road trip with a rag-tag bunch of misfits trying to survive a strange world, though there’s a midpoint twist that you won’t see coming!
Excellent, excellent first novel by Ballard. Colorful and interesting characters, and a plot that keeps you turning the pages. I'm very much looking forward to the sequel.
