A Life of Divine Encounters is the story of Fred and Ruth Waugh and their humble place in church history over the past century to this very day. At ninety-eight, Fred and Ruth are living witnesses of many historic church movements, from Aimee Semple McPherson and the Pentecostal and Holiness movements, to Billy Graham, Kathryn Kuhlman, and the charismatic movement; they also have close ties to Lonnie Frisbee and the radical Jesus People movement. For the greater part of his early life, however, Fred had an aversion to religion and focused instead on achieving business success, while Ruth faithfully prayed for years that her husband be born again. Then on an around-the-world trip that leads them to the Garden Tomb and a personal encounter with the living God, Fred has a genuine “heart transplant” that changes his life forever. Ever since, Fred and Ruth have become spiritual parents to a multitude of youth and instrumental in Christian universities such as Oral Roberts University, Biola, and Vanguard. They have completely dedicated their lives to helping others experience the reality of the Holy Spirit, and as they near one hundred years old, pray their life story will encourage others to have their own divine encounters today.
Ohmygoodness, I love Fred and Ruth! They wrote this book in 2020 while they were 98 years old. Ruth passed away in 2022 and Fred just last year at 100 and 102 years old! AND they were still hosting young people in their home for Bible studies at that age! Wow.
So, all the other memoirs I’ve read in the past few years—Keith Green, Lonnie Frisbee, John Wimber—-all of them are connected to Fred and Ruth. So cool. It was like reading all the books again—just from another perspective!
Fred and Ruth were just normal everyday people who encountered Jesus and Holy Spirit and then just walked into the next thing God opened to them. Truly amazing. Their humility and love for people was absolutely God given.
This book is awesome, it really points out divine appointments. Their life story is an amazing adventure of a life used by Jesus. It also shoes how Christ is using us in our own lives to further His plan, we all are connected. People mentioned in this book I have had encounters with, though I never heard of Fred and Ruth. Their influence as Lonnie Freebie impacted my wife and I. Thanks for being obedient and thank you Jesus for divine encounters.
I met this couple while attending Christ Chapel Anglican Church in Riverside. At first, I did not know there life, but after many talks and getting the blessing to be there driver to Church, I have seen the amazing things God has done and are currently doing through there stories.
A great read and an encouragement for people who are both know and do not know the Lord.
Enjoyed reading this inspiring book about divine encounters this couple experienced throughout their lives! Both are still living witnesses to God’s power, they are both 98 years old!
Fred and Ruth Waugh were witnesses as well as participants and perhaps even catalysts for some of the greatest moves of God in the last century. Their story is inspirational and a template for how to be used mightily by God and experience many divine encounters.
I have read quite a few Christian (and secular biographies, well over 100). Some are interesting or not and some out of this world. This is one of those.
