About the author

D. Rus

36 books545 followers
D. Rus is a young Russian author whose books took the Russian literary market by storm in 2013. AlterWorld - the first novel of his Play to Live series - made him a bestselling author overnight as critics now credit him with single-handedly creating a new science fiction genre: LitRPG. Set in the virtual reality of MMORPG - Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games - his books tell stories of real people who'd become stuck in the game and are forced to follow its rules while preserving their intergrity and fighting to make their new world a better place. The five books of the series have created a huge following as more authors followed suit, making LitRPG the latest bestselling Russian genre that merges science fiction, fantasy and gaming conventions. D. Rus has been nominated for Start, one of Russia's prestigious literary prizes for the best debut science fiction novel. The first two novels of the Play to Live series - AlterWorld and The Clan - have been translated into English, and talks are under way to have the rest of the series published on Amazon.

I give up

Made it 40% through. The translation is terrible, the shear amount of new entities being introduced or randomly aliased to some new name is beyond annoying. Same things are referenced as two complete opposite words, e.g. kitten and tomcat. The jumps in continuity is also beyond annoying, e.g. jumping from end of battle to middle of battle to end of same battle to being in a market. Not to mention publishing a new book 3 years after the previous and NOT PUTTING IN A RECAP!

don’t read if a fan

Whoever D Rus had to do this translation needs to be fired. I could barely get through this book despite my desire to find out what happened to AltWorld. When did it change its name btw? That wasn’t in the last book. Anyway, if the translation is fixed, I’ll reread it again and probably change my opinion. I saw others complain about it too, but guess they’ll give a grade based on work. Wonder if they were also ones who received participation trophies too?

Avoid.

This is book 9.

I really enjoyed the first 6 or so books.

Book 7 was ehhhhh, but it seemed like it was over.

Book 8 is him being a god and doing the same schitk as a gamer.

Then there is book 9.

The translation is difficult to read. Names change a lot, I think Nazgûl and Elekys are the same. And as if that wasn’t bad enough. The last quarter or fifth is heavily disjointed.

So to recap. Reread the first couple of books. But avoid this entry.

translation is off

Noticed that like previous volumes of this series a lot of grammatical errors, mislabeling of persons, one book even had two character’s backstories mixed up. I get it, the language translation, but how do the names of items suddenly change?
This one had a lot of confusion in comparison to the rest. Love your story though, Mr. Rus.

Shrooms Much?

The last few chapters read like a psychedelic trip.
Previous books have been far more fun and interesting.
One more like this one and I won't be revisiting this series.
