I got this book and its prequel for Christmas from my best friend. She saw the colorful covers and it immediately screamed "magical mischief" to her so she had to think of me, of course. ;D

In this second story of our favorite (mis-)adventurous warlock and frizzy redhead (honorary mention to the poop-machine), it’s been a year since Rose has said goodbye to her many-times-grandfather (10 years for him). Now, though, Merdyn’s arch enemy, Vanheldon the vandal warrior, has returned! *dramatic drumroll*
As we know from the previous volume, he was a menace and said he’d kill Evanhart - causing Merdyn to turn from wizard to warlock and subsequently turn Vanheldon’s entire army to stone.
So now, it’s time for some good, old-fashioned revenge. Starting with a kidnapping-slightly-gone-wrong (it can happen to the best) and some time travel that sends Rose back to the Middle Ages to travel to Transylvania and free her brother. But that doesn't exactly go according to plan either. *snickers*

Once again, the wit and heart of the story are wonderfully framed by the hilarity of the various situations Merdyn and Rose find themselves in (this time with two sidekicks!). :D
Moreover, there were historical tidbits thrown in just like in the first book (very cleverly done) that teach the reader quite a bit (about when stone castles were invented or what carbon dating is for example).
Though I have to say that I liked the more mischievous Merdyn slightly better than his Merlin-persona here.

I was pleased to see that the publisher has given this second volume as much love as the first regarding the design so, again, the cover had nice glossy elements and there were illustrations and decorations throughout the text.





I can only hope the author will keep on writing because I love these characters and their little mishaps (as well as the larger quests).

Der Erzähler verweist an verschiedenen Stellen auf den ersten Band, und merkt auch an, dass man den ja hoffentlich gelesen hat. Das ist bei dieser Buchreihe tatsächlich ratsam, weil man dann Rosie und Merdyn viel besser kennenlernt und versteht, was mit ihnen (vor allem mit Rosie) so los ist und wieso sie das können was sie können. Das Wichtigste wird aber erklärt, und dieses Mal sind Rosie und Merdyn auch nicht die alleinigen Hauptpersonen sondern Rosies Bruder Kris, Vanheldon, Vanessa, der junge Artus und Meerschweinchen Pupsie haben ebenfalls einen großen Anteil an der Geschichte.

Es spielte diesmal an 2 bzw. teilweise sogar 3 Schauplätzen gleichzeitig, was für meinen Geschmack etwas zu viel war, da es ein bisschen unübersichtlicher wurde.
Doch Jürgen von der Lippe - der Sprecher der Hörbuch-Version - macht wieder einen grandiosen Job und anhand der jeweiligen Stimmlage und Intonation bekommt man schnell mit, bei wem wir uns gerade befinden. Für mich ist diese Buchreihe vor allem auch wegen ihm ein Hit!

Die Story ist wieder sehr spannend aber auch gleichzeitig total humorvoll geschrieben. Ich musste echt oft schmunzeln und habe mich sehr amüsiert.

Das deutsche Hörbuch ist super gelesen, ich musste mehrmals lachen. Generell hat mit der zweite Teil noch besser gefallen als der erste, und den fand ich schon sehr unterhaltsam und genial.
Hoffentlich kommt noch ein dritter Teil.

Why didn't I listen to the first part already?
The German audio book is a great read, I had to laugh several times. In general, I liked the second part even better than the first, which I found very entertaining and ingenious.
I hope there will be a third part.

The Wizard in My Shed is one of my favourite contemporary children's book. Farnby's sequel is more historical, with most of it being set in the Dark ages this time around, so I think history loving kids will be down for a big treat. Wizard had more little nods and surprises, plus Merdyn is a little tamer and less sparky now! But it's refreshing to step back in time and see, especially, the plains and animals of the time around 511, and to see our beloved Warlock in his own territory.

This was funny and cute and I loved it! Sent to me for review, but cute enough I ordered part 1 for myself too. Very much hope I get to review the rest of the series as well! I loved all the characters (especially Bubbles, he was hilarious - but Rose too, so cute... And Merdyn! And Kris, and Vanhessa and Evanhart and OKAY I LOVED ALL OF THEM) and the plot was just as exciting as a children's book about a Vandal warrior in your wardrobe should be.

In this second adventure for Rose and her talking guinea pig Bubbles, her brother Kris has been kidnapped and taken back to the Dark Ages by Merdyn's nemesis. Rose, Bubbles and Merdyn must head off to Transylvania with the aid of a boy king to rescue Kris and stop the forces of darkness taking over the world. A fun tale for all ages.

The second book in the series and this time we have big strong warriors, a kidnapping, magic, time travel, sibling rivalry, and more!


Despite loving the first book quite a lot, when I learned of the second book I just wasn’t sure if I wanted to buy it. I mean, book 1 was good and felt like one book. But hey, if one of my libraries is added the book to their collection (in English gasp) how can I resist it?

In this one we are back to Rose, Kriss, and their mom. The kids now can do magic, but are they helping each other out? Oh no. Kriss uses his magic for fun things, going to concerts or impressing his friends. Whereas Rose uses her powers to help out people and animals. And then there is the whole fact that Rose feels like Kriss is doing much better than her and voila one of the plots for the book has appeared. I am not sure how I felt about them constantly bickering or even Rose resorting to stealing something from her brother. I get that you may feel like you aren’t good enough, but no need to take that out on your brother or steal his things. 😐 I am glad that things got resolved and that despite feeling angry/hurt with Kris, Rose went to the past immediately.

Thankfully, a warrior from the past has arrived and accidentally kidnaps Kriss. Yep. Meant to take Rose. But Kriss was in the wrong place in the wrong time. XD And apparently looked girly enough to be seen as a girl. Oops! What follows next is that we get two POVs. We get Kriss or whoever is at the place he is being held in the past. Then we have Rose as she and, YES YES, Merdyn go on adventure to help out Kriss and save the world. I liked both POVs. Yes, Kriss isn’t my favourite guy in the world, but in this one he really shone. Plus, I liked Vanhessa. Well, OK, after Kriss had talked to her a bit. When she learned that YES she had a choice to be good or not (though eating meat doesn’t make one a baddie, thank you very much).

There is ton of adventure and exciting moments happening. But also tons of moments that made me giggle and laugh! I love it when a book can make me feel all the feels.

I loved the little rhymes at the end of the chapters, they made me laugh and they were so original/creative. Plus, the chapter titles were once again very fun to read. I looked forward to them.

And of course, the illustrations. Claire Powell did it again! Her art is just so much fun~

There were a few things I wasn’t a fan of. Rose’s insecurity was one. I can understand she feels insecure/not happy about her powers, but everyone is telling you that you are awesome, listen to them. Just give it another try. Rome wasn’t build in one day and learning how to use light instead of herbs isn’t a POOF done thing either. Then there is the constant bickering between Merdyn’s wolf and Bubbles our guinea pig. It got seriously on my nerves. And that mom changed so many things… I mean, it was a good thing on the one side, but on the other side? It seemed a bit easy and magical + given how Vanhessa got THAT treatment and Eva got away with this? Unsure. Also, I knew who the old hag was that was influencing the Vandals. As soon as Merdyn mentions something.. And I am sorry but the ending, or well that last bit at least, had me rolling my eyes.

But all in all, I am glad that I picked up this book. It was tons of fun. Not as fun as the first book though (4.5 stars while this one is 4) but that is due to what I mentioned in my review up here. But there were still fun parts so that is why it is 4 stars.

When a mighty Dark Age warrior comes forward in time to kidnap Rose's brother Kris, Rose knows that she has no choice but to travel back to the year 521 in order to rescue him: even if he *is* annoying. Kris has been kidnapped on the orders of the evil Druilla, and Rose needs the help of the wizard Merdyn if she is to succeed in getting Kris back to the 21st century.

This is another madcap romp from the man responsible for the latest incarnation of Paddington Bear and *that* sketch with HMQ. I don't know if I enjoyed it *quite* as much as the first book, but it's still very entertaining, with some wonderful flights of imagination.

To get the bad points out of the way; first of all, I do find that Farnaby's method of adding 'eth' to the ends of words in order to produce cod-medieval speech gets *really* irritating after a while. Then there's a scene set at Stonehenge, which goes from sunrise to supper-time in a matter of moments. Lastly, Farnaby includes footnotes of relevant information where necessary; these are both useful and a lot of fun! However, there's a footnote about the Fleet River which I think is factually wrong, and one about the Hele Stone, which may well be.

But on the positive side, Farnaby has created wonderfully rounded characters in his main cast; even the bad guys (with one exception) are redeemable, and all of them are easy to like*. There are also some exciting discoveries about Merdyn's family, what's to come in his future (when Rose meets him he's mentoring a new king), and the name by which he will come to be known: here Farnaby has clearly done his homework! There is also a strong message of the importance of love, which is very positive.

Of course, there are silly moments. Twisted film quotes ("Killeth them! Killeth them all!"), and a cheeky Mitchell and Webb quote ("Are we the baddies?"). Best of all is a shout-out to two of Farnaby's Idiots Assemble colleagues, when Kris tells Vanhessa about the time he was made to put chewing gum in the hair of a girl named Martha by a boy named James Howick.

Great fun!

* I have to confess, though, that my favourite character in these books is Bubbles, Rose's pet guinea pig. He reminds me a *liiittle* of Tom Allen, and I think he's hilarious! 🐹 #NotSorry

Les romans jeunesse c’est un peu mon petit plaisir que j’aime par dessus tout. En fait j’irais même jusqu’à dire que j’en ai besoin dans ma vie de lectrice. Parce que les romans jeunesse c’est la certitude de passer un excellent moment, c’est aussi la certitude de rire et d’avoir une lecture sans prise de tête. De temps en temps, j’aime me plonger dans ce genre de roman parce que l’histoire est légère. Et avec cette saga, je peux vous dire que vous allez passer un moment tout simplement incroyable. J’avais trop hâte de retrouver Myrddin et Rose dans leur nouvelle aventure!
Simon Farnaby est avant tout un comédien et scénariste, connu pour ses collaborations avec des œuvres humoristiques telles que Paddington 2. Cela se reflète dans son écriture : le roman est bourré de moments hilarants, que ce soit dans les dialogues entre Rose et Myrddin ou dans les situations absurdes causées par la magie mal maîtrisée. L’humour est à la fois visuel et verbal, mêlant des blagues adaptées aux jeunes lecteurs tout en glissant des clins d’œil plus subtils pour les adultes. L’auteur utilise un langage simple et direct, parfait pour un public jeune. Les descriptions sont colorées et dynamiques, permettant au lecteur de visualiser facilement les scènes farfelues. De plus, les illustrations qui accompagnent le texte renforcent l’immersion et participent au ton léger et fantasque de l’histoire.

L’univers de La Vandale dans mon placard de Simon Farnaby est un mélange captivant entre magie légendaire et quotidien moderne. Ce contraste crée un cadre à la fois riche et comique. Une des choses qui m’a le plus plu dans ce second tome c’est que, contrairement au premier, ici ce n’est pas Myrddin qui voyage dans le monde moderne mais Rose qui voyage au temps de Myrddin. Ça nous donne l’opportunité de découvrir la vie à cette époque. Et j’ai trouvé ça vraiment chouette de voir l’inverse. On retrouve tout ce qu’il y avait dans le premier tome. Mais dans ce nouvel opus, le roi des Vandales, Vanheldon, cherche à se venger de Myrddin, qui a précédemment transformé son armée en pierre. Pour ce faire, il kidnappe Kris, le frère de Rose, et le transporte à l’Âge sombre, espérant ainsi attirer Myrddin dans un piège. Rose, Myrddin et Bulles, le cochon d’Inde de Rose, s’unissent pour sauver Kris, traversant des époques et affrontant des périls tout en évitant de perturber le cours de l’histoire.

Le voyage dans le temps reste un élément clé de l’intrigue. Rose et Myrddin vont une nouvelle fois devoir naviguer entre différentes époques et éviter de perturber l’ordre du temps. L’idée que chaque action dans le passé a un impact sur l’avenir devient plus forte dans ce tome, ce qui ajoute une tension supplémentaire. Le pouvoir de l’amitié et de la famille ont une place très importante dans ce tome. À travers l’évolution de la relation entre Rose et Myrddin, le thème de la solidarité, de l’entraide et de la confiance s’intensifie. Rose se rend compte que, bien que Myrddin soit un magicien puissant, il a aussi besoin d’elle pour accomplir certaines missions, et elle, de son côté, trouve en lui un allié solide. Les liens familiaux et amicaux sont au cœur de l’histoire, avec une attention particulière à la relation entre Rose et son frère Kris. J’ai vraiment adoré voir la relation entre Rose et son frère être exploré comme ça. Au début de ce tome, on pourrait croire que ces deux là ne s’entendront jamais mais au fur et à mesure, leur relation évolue alors même qu’ils ne sont pas ensemble.

Du côté des personnages, même si on retrouve des têtes connues, on en découvre également des nouvelles. On retrouve bien entendu Rose. C’est une jeune fille attachante et courageuse, au cœur de cette nouvelle aventure fantastique. Dans ce deuxième tome, son rôle se renforce, et son développement en tant que personnage principal est évident. Elle évolue face aux défis grandissants et aux menaces qui pèsent sur elle et sa famille. Rose est intelligente, curieuse et dotée d’un sens aigu de la justice. Même lorsqu’elle est confrontée à des situations magiques complètement folles ou à des adversaires redoutables comme Vanheldon, elle fait preuve d’une grande résilience. Ce qui rend Rose si intéressante, c’est son humanité : elle n’est pas une héroïne parfaite. Elle doute parfois, fait des erreurs, mais apprend toujours de ses expériences, devenant plus forte à chaque étape. Rose est au centre des événements, car Vanheldon cherche initialement à l’enlever pour piéger Myrddin. Cependant, c’est son frère Kris qui est capturé par erreur, ce qui pousse Rose à partir dans une quête pour le sauver. Cette mission révèle sa force intérieure et sa capacité à surmonter ses peurs. Elle prend des décisions difficiles et montre qu’elle est prête à tout pour protéger ceux qu’elle aime. Kris, le frère de Rose, joue un rôle clé. Bien qu’il ne soit pas au cœur de l’intrigue comme sa sœur, son enlèvement par Vanheldon est l’élément déclencheur de cette aventure magique et mouvementée. Alors qu’il est prisonnier, Kris montre une capacité étonnante à garder son calme et à réfléchir, même dans des situations difficiles. Ce développement subtil en fait un personnage plus mature que ce que son rôle initial pourrait laisser croire. Alors que dans le premier tome on pouvait le trouver pénible, ici il m’a beaucoup surprise pour le coup. J’ai aussi beaucoup aimé le lien qu’il noue avec Vanhessa. Myrddin, le célèbre magicien gallois, est l’un des personnages les plus mémorables et charismatiques de cette saga. Dans ce deuxième tome, il continue de jouer un rôle central en tant que mentor magique de Rose et source inépuisable de situations comiques. Cependant, il montre également de nouvelles facettes de sa personnalité, ce qui le rend encore plus captivant. Dans le tome précédent, il m’a énormément fait rire. Ici aussi mais je l’ai trouvé hyper touchant et attachant. On va découvrir Vanheldon en tant qu’antagoniste central. Il est défini par une soif insatiable de vengeance contre Myrddin, l’ayant humilié et vaincu par le passé. Ce désir de revanche injecte une tension palpable dans l’histoire, car chaque action de Vanheldon est calculée pour piéger et détruire son vieil ennemi. Sa présence domine le récit, et sa détermination sans faille en fait une figure menaçante et imprévisible. Contrairement à un méchant caricatural, Vanheldon est également un personnage complexe : sa colère semble nourrie par un mélange de fierté blessée et d’ambition, ce qui lui donne une profondeur psychologique intéressante. Sa capacité à élaborer des stratagèmes, tout en manipulant les forces magiques et historiques, en fait un adversaire redoutable pour Rose et Myrddin, testant leurs limites à chaque étape de l’aventure. Il y a aussi sa fille, Vanhessa. C’est est un personnage fascinant et intrigant que j’ai adoré découvrir. Bien qu’elle semble secondaire à première vue, son rôle dans l’histoire s’avère crucial, et elle apporte une dynamique unique à l’intrigue grâce à sa complexité et ses motivations ambiguës.

J’étais impatiente de retrouver Rose et Myrddin dans cette nouvelle aventure et je n’ai pas été déçu. Cette suite combine un affrontement final haletant, des moments d’émotion et de réflexion, et une touche d’humour qui caractérise toute la série. Les thématiques de courage, de famille, et de responsabilité s’entrelacent habilement, offrant une fin qui satisfera les jeunes lecteurs tout en leur donnant envie de découvrir la suite des aventures de Rose et Myrddin. De plus, les illustrations de Claire Powell apporte un vrai plus à la lecture.

L’auteur et comédien Simon Farnaby (connu notamment pour son humour débridé) revient en force avec Le Magicien dans mon cabanon, un roman aussi pétillant qu’aventureux. Au programme : un voyage entre époques, un ensorceleur flamboyant… et un cochon d’Inde qui n’a pas fini de nous surprendre !

Myrddin, proclamé « plus grand ensorceleur de l’Âge sombre », atterrit de manière inattendue dans le XXIe siècle. Rose, son étonnante descendante, se retrouve ainsi liée à un ancêtre un brin excentrique, mais ô combien puissant. Tout serait presque sous contrôle si Vanheldon, le redouté roi des Vandales, ne décidait pas de kidnapper Rose pour attirer Myrddin dans un piège vengeur. Las, c’est Kris, le frère de Rose, qui se fait enlever par erreur, faisant basculer la situation du simple cafouillage vers un chaos temporel jubilatoire !

Aux côtés de Bulles, l’irrésistible cobaye dont les besoins pressants risquent de compromettre plus d’une mission, Rose et Myrddin replongent dans l’Âge sombre, bien déterminés à sauver Kris. Tour à tour comique et palpitante, cette épopée navigue habilement entre la modernité du XXIe siècle et l’univers médiéval, où magie, ruses et retournements de situation se bousculent.

En jouant sur un humour à la fois tendre et décalé, Simon Farnaby nous embarque dans une chasse à l’ennemi où les anachronismes créent des scènes aussi cocasses que mémorables. Le Magicien dans mon cabanon est un pur concentré de bonne humeur, idéal pour les lecteurs en quête d’aventures déjantées, à partager en famille ou en solo. Une plongée délirante dans une histoire « moyenâgeusement » moderne !

Ideen-Feuerwerk (German Edition)

Auch die Fortsetzung wird von Jürgen von der Lippe hervorragend intoniert.
Es handelt sich um die ungekürzte Hörbuch - Fassung des gleichnamigen Buches.
Problemlos bin ich in die Geschichte gestartet und den unterschiedlichen Tonfarben von Herrn von der Lippe konnte ich gut folgen und so auch die einzelnen Charaktere unterscheiden. Er setzt die verschiedenen Figuren authentisch um .
Auf diese Weise wird das Hörbuch lebendig.
Die Vorlage stammt von Simon Farnaby und nicht nur das farbenfrohe Cover,auch die Ideen kommen einem Feuerwerk gleich .
Lückenlos geht es mit dieser fantastisch - magischen Geschichte weiter und durch
informative Rückblenden, die den ersten Band betreffen, kann dieses Hörbuch auch ohne Vorkenntnisse gehört werden.

Zuerst suchen Rosie und ihr Meerschweinchen Pupsie im finsteren Mittelalter Merdyn .Gemeinsam begeben sie sich auf die Suche nach Rosies Bruder Kris.
Skurille Figuren,abenteuerliche Begegnungen und unvorhersehbare Wendungen fesseln mich an diese unglaubliche Geschichte.Die Spannung steigt und wird nur durch informative Einblendungen unterbrochen.

Der Cliffhanger am Ende macht mich neugierig auf die Fortsetzung.

Ich hatte sehr viel Spaß beim hören und kann es für Fantasy-begeisterte Hörer jeglichen Alters empfehlen.

Did you know that the word vandalism comes from a Germanic tribe called the Vandals, who attacked Rome and smashed up beautiful Roman buildings and artwork just for fun?

The Warrior in My Wardrobe has a lot of interesting facts like that worked skillfully into the story. In this sequel to The Wizard in My Shed, Rose, the descendant of the wizard Merdyn, has a new problem on her hands when a Vandal warrior from the past kidnaps her brother Kris. Rose and her trusty talking guinea pig Bubbles must travel back in time and team up with Merdyn once more if they want to get Kris back.

This is an entertaining story told in an often hilarious fashion and filled with interesting facts like the one I mentioned in the beginning. It did feel like it dragged a bit as the book progressed because nothing much was really happening and I would have been happier reading this as a short story. But this style probably appeals more to its middle grade audience who will also likely better appreciate the juvenile nature the humour sometimes takes. For me, the highlight of the book was Bubbles and his constant and funny outrage at all the inconveniences he has to suffer.

✍️We revisit Merdyn the greatest Wizard of the Dark Ages and Rose his beloved 21st Century offspring in the second book of the series. Rose must travel back in time to save her brother who has been kidnapped by a warrior.

This middle grade book was so FUN! I relished it from start to finish. I adored the little footnotes at the bottom. The plot was cleverly contrived and humorous with a heartwarming message. The illustrations were outstanding, delicate and expressive. I enjoyed the balance of the historical as well as contemporary aspect of the storyline and jargon. The characters were zany and madcap. and I enjoyed the wit and repartee between them.

I read this with my 10yo after reading Wizard In My Shed earlier in the year.

Honestly, I didn't enjoy this one as much. I don't feel it was as action packed and fast paced as Wizard, and I was confused as to the age of Kris as he seemed younger than in the first book!

I loved Bubbles again though - I mean who doesn't like a talking, pooping, moaning guinea pig? 😂

It was good to see a different side to the Dark Ages and meet another very famous character of the past, but I didn't figure out another character twist until the last minute..

Overall, not quite as good as Wizard, but enjoyable nonetheless.

One of the children in my class leant me this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s true that Merdyn is a more subdued and sensible character in this book, which does mean he provides less of the comedic moments, but that has simply allowed Bubbles to become more prominent and entertaining. I enjoyed that this one was set in the past as it allowed some excellent historic facts. Overall a great book, particularly for a child who is a fan of history.

The Warrior In My Wardrobe by Simon Farnaby has an entertaining historical adventure for any child in the mood. It’s another great, wild edition to the Misadventures of Merdyn the Wild Series.

After Merdyn, the greatest wizard of the Dark Ages turned Vanheldon’s army to stone, Vandheldon comes up to kidnap his 21st-century descendent Rose and transport her to the Dark Ages. Except, his minion kidnaps Rose’s teenage brother Kris instead. Now it’s Rose’s turn to travel in time and team up with Merdyn to save her brother and save the day.

Compared to its predecessor, The Wizard In My Shed, it has a bold cast of rich and colourful characters that’ll make you want to visit their world and interact with them. And that’s primarily thanks to the same illustrator (of the previous book also), Claire Powell!
