Rate this book

In truth I felt this was an absolute waste of my money and time. But I think to fashion design students and hopefuls it could be useful, to an extent.

While the layout of the book is visually appealing and unique--they go as far as to give you a "how to read this book" section--reading it I couldn't decide if I hated it or liked it. There was never a thought of loving it. I agree it would be a great book for a starting point for someone interested in the "Fundamentals of Fashion Design", the title really is well chosen.

The positive aspect of the book is that there are so many quotes, photos and images from collections, and the design process of designers- sketches, patterns, inspiration/mood pages/boards.

There is a bullet point style of insight and information on the steps from inspiration/research to production and the book gives actual examples from successful designers and houses- in the form of the above mentioned images, but I found it to feel as more of a table-top book than a book I would reference. That's not to say it's a bad book- it really does tell you so many aspects of each process, it's just that each one is a little blurb which I find almost useless to someone who knows what it is and barely a description to someone who doesn't.

If it wasn't a recommended book, I would have never purchased it- the description and layout did nothing for me and my collection of functional design books have so much more value.
I regret purchasing it at near full price. But if you can find it for a third of the price used on Amazon for under $10 it's worth a read through if for nothing more than the explanations on the "inside view" of what other designers and professionals do.

It's a fantastic book that helps you to understand the process involved in fashion design. From the first stages of collecting ideas in a mood board to the final process of having the creations in a catwalk. It explains all the process including the parts related to fabrics, templates and sewing the garments, how to present the ideas, how to market them, and so on.

It's certainly a book for fashion design students, but if you need to know about the business because you write about it or have dealings with it or simply interested in how it's done, it's a great book as it covers everything but without going to the smallest detail that can only be of use to fashion designers. So it's general enough to be a great read for non-fashion designers, but goes into enough detail be a great introductory text to fashion design students.

Overall it was great, really easy to read with plenty of illustrations and photographies to understand something that it's really visual.

This book was annoying to read. I believe this is supposed to be an informational read for aspiring fashion designers. However, the book was filled with little quips about how hard this thing is and how much skill is needed for that thing...it felt more like reading a very long warning label. 2 stars for being boring and discouraging.

Studied this book while studying Fashion Design at LCF by the author RIchard Sorger himself. Taught me uncountable things which gave me a strong foundation to start my career. I recommend it to every Fashion Designer out there!
