Before I start, a warning that hopefully isn’t a spoiler. I mostly read romance these days - the rules of the genre and the happy ever after are my escape from the world. It’s quite a while since I read the steampunk offerings of Gail Carriger, Bec McMaster, and Pip Ballantine/Tee Morris. I’d forgotten that a book of this type does not have to obey the rules of a romance novel. I mean, they can. Many of them do. But *they don’t have to*. Twists are allowed. And as the title of this book suggests, they definitely occur. If that leaves me with a similar feeling to when I read Tamora Pierce’s Alanna series as a young teen (if you know, you know), that’s on me to deal with. And I’ve dealt with it. Moving on.
(That said, there’s one more book to go. Who knows what further twists are in store?)
This book picks up where the last one left off, and immediately throws the main characters into a whole new configuration. Torn loyalties are prevalent. Amethyst quite rightly starts to think that the threats to her are never-ending. And through it all is the growing realisation that aether has many more secrets and uses than most people have imagined. The book raises more questions than it answers, but rattles along at an exhilarating pace and sets up an intriguing final instalment. The typos/ name issues do still grate a little though (Jenson becomes Jensen several times and at one point Emerald becomes Emily). 4 and a bit stars, and onwards to the finale.

Nope nope nope you can’t spend 3 books drawing the reader in with an epic love story only to have him wander off with another woman of no consequence the second he is free. He wouldn’t cheat on his horrible wife but would simply walk away from Amme. Nope nope nope.
