What's done in the dark will always come to light... A hideous crime with many layers. This one will either make her, or break her.
After the dramatic conclusion of last month’s missing girl case, Detective Inspector Olivia Austin feels as though she’s finally finding her feet.
With a strong budding friendship in DI Dean Lawrence and a team that finally believes she’s fit for the job, life with Newquay CID could only get better, but the discovery of a deceased male on the ground beneath his balcony shakes a sleepy coastal community.
With injuries not quite adding up, Olivia must work hard to unravel the mystery that surrounds his death. With dark secrets rising to the surface, she needs to find out, do the dead fall, or was he pushed?
This will be the second and last book I read by this Author. I just find the prose awkward and the verbs used for speaking "hummed" and "growled" for example quite annoying. I don't enjoy his style of writing. It actually gets on my nerves. And just for the record there's a "to" that should be "too" . Where are the editors? Anyway I don't recommend the book, but that's not to say people may find it enjoyable. I just didn't...
I've read first two books now and really enjoyed both. Just the right mix of getting to know the detectives, their professional and personal relationships AND the actual crime and the solving of it. Just ordered books 3 and 4 in the series.
My one criticism (and it's a personal gripe) the author uses the word "gotten" over and over again. Why. An English author writing a book set in England!!! Why use this awful American slang. There are a wealth of other more imaginative words to choose from or even good old-fashioned "got" as a last resort!
Ah this one wasn’t for me at all. Just didn’t get on with the writing style, which somehow felt forced. It’s suppose to be a whodunnit, but there’s pages and pages filled with boring personal stuff. Plus if you haven’t read the first book in the series, which I haven’t ( and won’t) a lot of it won’t make much sense. So you’re left with a not very exciting murder mystery, no twists or turns to speak of, and a few boring, rather irritating , characters.
I am loving this series! This is book two and DI Olivia Austin and DI Dean Lawerance are once again involved in a murder. I love how the characters are developing and becoming closer. Nic Roberts does a wonderful job with difficult subjects. Her style of unfolding the story is wonderful. I am looking forward to book three in the series.
Not really my cup of tea. There were quite a few errors that the proof reader should have picked up on (eg Harry becomes Alex at one point and Margaret was a divorce attorney who suddenly became a stunt double) Haven't read book 1 and don't think I will continue with this series either, too many mistakes and not holding my attention.
Read over two evenings I couldn't put it down. It's currently 2:30am, that says something about a book if you have stayed up late to finish it. Perfect combination of the characters past stories and current dramas. I want to know more about Olivia's life and what to read the next book straight away .... sleep first.......then on to the next book.
Fantastic book just like the first book was. Lots of surprises and shockers! I like that the author adds just the right amount of detail, not too much which just drags out the pages and not too little that it leaves you wanting! The characters are easy to like and fit well into the series. Its definitely an enjoyable read.
Started reading this inspite of reading a previous book from her which was equally dreadfull. Got half way through and gave up in disgust. I am at a loss as to why this woman thinks she can write ! ! !
Great book. Second in the DI Austin series and second I've read from this author. I did guess who the guilty party was early on in the book but wasn't until the last few pages you find out the reason. Looking forward to reading more of this series.
7/10 Enjoyable but not particularly gripping. It seemed to lack tension and suspense (no bitten nails!) but it was a decent enough short story that kept me interested and entertained throughout.
I find these books quite short stories. I normally like a long story really. But this author has kept me reading. Stories have been good and I'm know onto the next one
Determined to see this series out, but sadly improvement is slow. It is just a bit too mediocre for my liking. The potential is there for it to be quite good, but the author is not there yet.
