I won't be able to update the cover here on Saturday, so make sure to subscribe to Youtube and/or follow the Instagram page to see it as soon as it is revealed!

9/21 Of The Curatrix Code is now finished, besides some proofing for typos, and all the formal publishing stuff. I can say for sure it feels SO weird to have (almost) finished the second book in a series.

The characters.😭

Personal rating, torn between 4.5 or 5 stars.
And now I ramble:
Of the Curatrix Code is a shiny sequel. I don't know if it was the conflict, the action, or already knowing the majority of the cast, but the story caught me from the start and pulled me along for the ride. (Is it okay if I say it's better than book 1?) It was hilarious. It was entertaining. I saw more of the world where these characters reside and understood a little more of the world-building while getting a glimpse at 1 (or 2) upcoming threat(s).
What I care about most, as usual, was the characters. I was thrilled at their deepening relationships. I still love Nikki and Lincoln and Ray and everyone.

If Nikki is the hero in the first book, Lincoln is the hero in the sequel. I feel like I know him. Granted, he partially reminds me of a guy-friend. Could totally see the dude I know quietly working on stuff and then leaving and creeping around in the woods. (He does actually creep around/hiking).

How in the world does she write characters so lovable? Seriously. I think I'm going to stare at this book to try and steal her talent and insert it into my works.
Cole and Felicity grew on me. 10/10
Cole is like Gandalf when he's counting the dwarfs in the Hobbit films (except in this case, it's the Council co.)

I wouldn't say this book was perfect, but I've read "perfect" books I liked less. So, who cares? But if I'm being critical, I have three things to bring up: there were words (can't remember if they were repeated/wrong words/misspelled) that I *whispers* think the editor should have caught and er... I do in fact blame for that*un-whisperers.* Second thing. After the most terrible thing happens, it felt like the "lowpoint" of the book and I was expecting the climax to come next and then the book to wrap up. Instead, it almost felt like the start of a book when the characters encountered a new world, had what felt like new missions and eventually had the conflict and ending I was expecting. (The rest of the book felt like it followed a structure super well, if that makes sense?) (Also, lil upset that Ray isn't in the end. That boi's going through STUFF). Third, there were a few things I didn't understand in some scenes. A re-read may clear it up for me, but *shrugs*

More rambles:
Felicity's character arc was beautiful. Veronica is awesome and
Lincoln and Felicity's friendship was something I was NOT expecting and I LOVED it. I'm also thankful for the age difference because I was almost betraying myself and shipping them even though I'm like NO. IT'S NIKKI AND HIM.

and Ray is underappreciated in this book not going to lie. But Nikki, Ray and Lincoln (plus just Lincoln and Ray) are absolutely the BEST. So funny.

Lawrence is a grouch, who I like a tiny bit, but I thought Cole was a grouch before too, so I think I'll like Lawrence a lot more in the next book. Speaking of the coming books, I'm terrified. Did I just see that two character deaths were coming? Or can those be escaped? I am not prepared. Ever. To lose any of the original beans (sorry new characters :'D)

If you like fantasy/sci fi and goofy, chaotic peoplez *dabs*

.
.
.

Not to flex, but my name was written in the book because (Tabitha?) called Lawrence the wrong name. Yes, I'm still very excited about that.

I absolutely adore this book, Ray and Matteo and Silas are my favorites they need to be protected at all costs. Felicity really annoyed me towards the end, she was really whiny, but then she got out of her whiny stage. Ummmm Lauren??? Excuse me WHERES RAY???? *squints in the distance* I CANNOT FIND RAY!!!!! also after that cliffhanger ending I need Of The Shadow Soul like… STAT!!!!

I was a beta-reader, and I am so grateful to be one. Lauren knows how to make you love her characters and bring you into the world of OTTC a mixture of sci-fi, but also great fantasy. Every time I turned the page I felt like I was experiencing the events of the story in real-time. This book is a page-turner because of just how amazing it is. THE ENDING THOUGH! Lauren gimme book three right now cause I need to know what is up with that. The new characters you are being introduced to are enjoyable to meet as you go through this dark, painful and numb journey. I loved this book so much and recommend people reading this book if you love sci-fi and fantasy.

I’ve been searching for the right words for this review, how exactly to put my feelings into words.

This book is filled with emotion, the kind of emotion that always makes your heart flutter and brings tears to your eyes. Lauren writes the characters so well that you always feel connected to them, feel what they feel with them. Whenever they cried or felt pain, I felt it along with them. It doesn’t feel as if you are reading them living their lives, it feels like you are living it right along with them. Everything about these book draws you in and holds you there till the last page, every line and every moment makes you want more.

I adored this book and I am so lucky that I got to Beta read it, I don’t know if I could have survived the wait for it to be released. I will be impatiently waiting for book 3.

I am impressed!

The Unanswered Questions (book 1) was a pretty good book for a teen debut author, but there were some issues that I found distracting. Of The Curatrix Code was an excellent book for anyone to write, and all the problems I had with book one were easily resolved.

The prose was smooth and much easier to read. The world-building, magic system, and general exposition was well explained and easy to understand and remember. The character’s internal conflicts and motivations were woven seamlessly into the action-packed plot.

The characters are as meme-able as ever. XD The dialog is sharp and snappy. The humor made me laugh out loud on multiple occasions, attracting strange looks from any nearby siblings.

The series is a must-read for fans of fun, fast-paced, upper middle-grade and YA adventures like Artemis Fowl, or Keeper of The Lost Cities.

So, to anyone who has read book one but are uncertain if they should stick with the series: give book two a try before you make up your mind, because it’s on a whole new level.

Lauren Fulter delivers a worthy sequel to her first high-pace adventure with even more characters you'll love to love and love to hate! Beta reading for OTCC was one of my major highlights of the year and I've loved getting to finish up 2021 with the physical copy in hand.

All my favorite characters were back for round two with even higher stakes and bigger feelings. I especially loved the addition of Lawrence, who gets swept up in the drama a little bit against his will. His story is a compelling one as we watch him slowly come to terms with who he is and the destiny that awaits him.

My heart will always belong to Felicity though, who remains an incredible representation of anxiety and PTSD as Fulter proves that even as a young author, her grip and understanding of the human experienced is deep and nuanced. She doesn't shy away from hard topics, especially as she tackles grief, depression, abuse, and death in this latest installment.

Despite the heavy material, Fulter shows the importance of hope, faith, and self-sacrifice, especially when things are at their darkest and most dire. With every chapter she showcases just why you shouldn't underestimate teen authors. By the time you reach the last page, you're hungry for more and thankful that Fulter has at least another 5 books planned.

This book was simply amazing! I love it more than the first one! Chapter 35 crushed my soul, and I will never forgive Lauren for that. 😅

The characters are wondrous. The relationships even more so. The story, plot, everything is just so immaculate. Lauren truly did an amazing job.😭

I can’t wait to see what adventures the council kids go on in OTSS. >:)

Now go read the TUQ series!!! 😑

I’m watching you 👁

This is quite literally the most mid book I've read in a long time. I'll start off by saying that I enjoyed Cole and Lawrence's characters, as well as Nikki's, but everyone else fell completely, utterly flat in this book. Felicity was whiny, Tabitha was just annoying, I didn't feel any sort of connection with Matteo, and Ray tried far too hard to be comic relief. Nikki was MIA half the book, and I have to remind myself Lincoln isn't a seven year old kid who got his toys taken up. I'll give the author some grace, because perhaps the characters haven't developed yet and their arcs are still in the works, but the sorry excuse for a cohesive plot and worldbuilding needs to be discussed.

The characters seemed to only exist to patch up the gaping plot holes and move things along (something the plot failed to do). I understand this may be a more character-driven book, but there should still be a balance. Some scenes were hard to follow, at times I couldn't tell who was alive, who wasn't, what was a flashback, and what was in the present. I found myself going back and rereading several scenes to try and understand a fraction of what was happening. The prose was slightly less clunky than it was in the first book, but the writing style still felt amateur and didn't quite flow. I have nothing against young or indie authors-- I've read some fantastic books by young self-published authors-- but Of the Curatrix Code still needed to see another round of editing before publication.

To touch on worldbuilding again, there are some basic things that could have been given to us, like the rankings of positions within the Defenders (are they supposed to be the military? Does this world have a military? They should, given its history... I also failed to understand the Council, and what their purpose is, as well as where the Council's powers and positions came from. Also, the romance feels so horrifically forced and just bleh. Where is the chemistry?

The setting suffers from white room syndrome. Reading this felt like an absolute fever dream, or maybe the backrooms. Is this book what Ohio is like? I'm already using up a lot of cognitive energy reading this book, at least provide some details. The book is entirely too long, and half of it is just the characters arguing, traveling, and running away from things. I can, however, compliment the unique personalities of the characters, even if I have to sort them into the categories of whiny, annoying, tolerable, grumpy, level-headed, dead(?), earbud kid who lives in a big house, evil, and wannabe-comic-relief.

I'll do myself a favor and use this book as a murder weapon rather than reread it. Lord knows it's big enough.

Also, this isn't to throw shade to the author. I read the book, and I'm now sharing my thoughts. I am a firm believer of the fact that skills can and will improve over time, with practice. Readers are entitled to their reviews of a book they've actually read, whether they're two or five-star reviews.

Fantastic continuation of the characters' journeys. I loved reading about each of their struggles and journeys and growth (whether slow or fast). I love the big, vivid world with lots of settings and details, and again the balance of POVs was great. And LAWRENCE! He's wonderful, a good mixture of stoic and sensitive, harsh and gentle, broken and healer. Lawrence as a character gets ten out of five stars. And I'm excited to see what happens with Ray, too.

The prose in this book felt cleaner than the last; there were way fewer typos. That said, there was this one thing throughout the book where a second speaker would start in the same paragraph. That made some scenes really hard to follow. There was also a scene where the POV character switched midway through, and at one point, a character's wounds kinda get healed too quickly for what makes sense in that world. I know the editor's work and she does a good job, so I think what's going on is that this book just needed a bit more polishing (aka, at least another round of line edits).

Oh! For both this book and the last, can we talk about the chapter headers?? They're gorgeous.

I love how the book explores the different characters' journeys, including diving into their trauma and healing processes. Though sure, the external plot is interesting and all, I love the characters' internal stories even more. It's fantastic and I'm definitely a huge fan of each and every character.

Oh, and I wasn't expecting to like Giles after his first appearance, but by the end, I've joined the Giles fanclub.

.
And not just cause I'm in the acknowledgements (?! Scammer of the Year over here. I'll be signing autographs till 7.)
.
Excellent fight scenes, definitive characters, millions of small details and plot points executed brilliantly, and rich scenes of emotion to boot.
.
Each book LDF creates gets a little deeper and a little more exciting. The technological and sci-fi elements of this book blend seamlessly with the contrast of high-fantasy inspired swordsmanship, talismans, and ancient powers. Each character has an enthralling story, complex relationships, and bold personalities.
.
Usually it's literally sluggish torture to put myself through large books with time constraints, but I finished this chonker in 2 1/2 days and now I'll be scooting over to my email waiting for the author to give me more.
.
I would recommend reading the entire book and not trusting Google docs to leave you on a massive cliff hanger 3/4s way through. Not that it's happened to me, just a tip.

I'm looking forward to seeing where the characters go next. Some characters had a lot of great development in this one, especially Felicity and Lincoln, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they continue to grow.

Admittedly, the last third of the book was my favorite and was a lot more polished than the first part.

The introduction of Giles was awesome! I found him annoying at first, but then there were a few moments where his golden heart shone through, and I began to fall in love with his quirky self. By the end of the book, he had emerged as one of my favorite characters in it.

I don't think I enjoyed it as much as the first book, but I'm still looking forward to continuing this journey with LDF's kiddos! I know there are lots of adventures ahead and questions to be answered 😉

GOODREADS I REQUEST YOU ADD MORE STARS BECAUSE THIS BOOK CANNOT BE DEFINED BY ONLY FIVE!
This, in pure honesty, has been one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. It’s rare I find a book that I can hardly sleep while trying to figure out what happens next. Or a book can make me cry!!
It’s has beautiful themes; amazing characters you will all love to pieces, each one so different and defined and recognizable; and beautiful storytelling that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
If you’re thinking about picking this book up, please do! It’s criminally underrated for such a vibrant story. <33

This book was fantastic. LDF kept all the amazing qualities that made the first book so great, and ramped them up in this one. The characters are so real and relatable, and the relationships between them are beautiful. If you read nothing else this year, read this!

I read TUQ, thought, “I liked it!” and then wrote a very long review.

I read OTCC, screamed, freaked out, and am now writing a very short review, as follows:

OTCC was AMAZING, I loved it, I love the characters, I love the plot twists, I love the themes, and the characters - whaaat no I didn’t mention the characters twice. But if I did, it would definitely be justified cuz just *whispers* Nikki and Lincoln and Ray and Lawrence and Cole and Tabitha and Felicity and Giles and Miriam and Charles and - you get the point, right? Right.
