No one expected the loudmouth of the team to be hiding in the biggest closet of them all. When he’s paired with someone who just wants to keep his head down and play the game, sparks are going to fly.
Kevin Green has always been the life of the party. He’s the one everyone turns to for a bit of comic relief. With so many of his teammates coming out of the closet and living healthy lives, it’s getting harder for him to keep the secret only one other person knows: that he’s not as straight as everyone assumes when they see him out with his hot girlfriend. Now, the façade is cracking as Amber decides it’s time to follow her dreams, but she doesn’t want to leave until she knows Kevin will embrace the side of him he’s hidden from everyone but her.
Clint Davies isn’t sure what to think of his new road roommate assignment. Kevin runs hot and cold toward him and has zero sense of boundaries. He doesn’t think before he speaks, and worse, before he acts. What starts as one night of throwing caution to the wind is instantly complicated in ways Clint isn’t prepared to deal with. He’s never seriously considered a relationship at all, much less an open arrangement with a teammate.
Having a little fun is one thing, but will Kevin and Clint strike out when things start getting serious?
Change Up is the fifth book in the Homeruns series, originally released under the pen name Sloan Johnson.
Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.
When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.
Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?
Now, Sloan is a tattooed, purple haired mom of two kids, one of which was a thank you present to her husband for letting her get a Staffordshire Terrier with more anxiety issues than Sloan has, which is saying something. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself in a good book and forget that she has somewhere to be.
This is another great addition to the Homeruns series but, as with previous books, there are some really glaring editing, grammar and continuity issues.
The wrong MC's name is used at least twice and one time the wrong character full stop is referenced. These stop this book from getting a higher rating which is a shame as I've always loved Kevin and Amber in the previous books and I was interested to see how he was going to end up with a guy.
Clint and Kevin need to learn to communicate more but Clint's parents more than made up for that with their cameo of awesomeness. Great sex, great to see all the previous guys from the other books still heavily involved and I'm really looking forward to book six and finding out about the mystery man and Clint's former fuck buddy.
I think I hit a slump! All my favorite previously reliable authors writing previously beloved series are now firing blanks. Perhaps it's the curse of trying to live up to the prior book in the series while keeping the formula or maybe it's me. Whichever way it goes, Change Up which is Book 5 in the Homerun Series was not a homerun to me. We have met Kevin Greene in the other books and he has a girlfriend and was presumed to be straight, though a small clue to the complexity of his thoughts opened up in the last book. Now we meet Clint, a relative newcomer to the team, who has been assigned as Kevin's roommate. He has also not publicly declared his sexual orientation though he is gay. The story begins with the confusion and sexual tension between the two and leads into the barrier that is presented by Kevin having a clearly identifiable significant other in his girlfriend, Amber. The book tried to overcome the ickiness of laying out that Amber is NOT a beard. They have sex; good sex supposedly and love each other (though they are not "in love"). There is no sign, hint or smoke signal of a ménage on the horizon so the Author has a bit of convincing to do. I am not totally sure she did it well as the explanation came at the expense of Amber's previously strong role in the series and more importantly Clint's lovability as a romantic lead. I fear the plot devices made Clint so ambivalent about committing to the relationship that he first seemed sunny with a side of dick then closer to the end there is a dinner scene in which his asshole side joined the party and it was dicks and assholes allround (and not the fun kind). The sex in this one is just meh. Initially Clint is presented as a devoted bottom yet the story unfolds with scarcely any action in that direction. We are confusingly told in a couple places that he hasn't done that in a while. Huh? There were several other instances where the character backstory presented was totally changed as the story unfolds. Another example is where we are told that Kevin's father aggressively pushed him to excel in sports to live his dreams through Kevin. Later we are told that his Dad hated the idea of him devoting time to sports and not to Academics. There were enough of these small inconsistencies that it just didn't put the story over the top. My final critique; I like epilogues except when it seems they are used to wrap up a story that the Author couldn't or didn't find a way to end in the body of the work itself. I don't want to read an epilogue that has more forward momentum and plot reveals than the book itself. That just seems odd. That happened here and though it filled in missing pieces it also highlighted how much of the story was just dangling. Will I continue to read the series? Absolutely! Sloan has done fabulous work in this series and in others I have read cover to cover. Usually so strong on character development, this one just didn't get over the hump for me. 3 stars.
1) This is the fourth gay/baseball book I've read by four completely different authors who have made the mistake of having the HOME team bat in the top of the inning (in this one, the Milwaukee Mavericks are visiting Dallas, which bats in the top of the sixth). Please. This is stupid.
2) In each of the other books, one of the characters was a bit anal or thought he was straight. In this one, both Kevin and Clint are jerks. Kevin opens his mouth before his brain functions and Clint is so hung up on not having a relationship that he lies his way through the one he develops with Kevin--after Kevin's girlfriend Amber leaves him for a job in Hollywood.
Get it?
After that, Kevin, who thinks he's bi and maybe gay crawls all over Clint, who lets him, and Clint gets hot and cold depending on the weather, it seems.
Weirdly, however, I stuck with this one, probably just to get through it. Granted, some of the other men from earlier books help out here, but mostly these two are just jerks. In addition, the Epilogue is totally and completely confusing--it seems as though whole paragraphs are excised which would tell us where it takes place (is it Las Vegas? Isn't that in Clark County?" and how it is put together (what is Amber doing there? Lucy, 'splain!!)
In addition, this is one of at least two chapters in which the narrator (either Kevin or Clint) switches the name of the other guy with his own (e.g., if Kevin is describing something about Clint, he will refer to Clint as Kevin in the same paragraph; this has happened in several other books by other authors with alternating chapter narrators and requires a good proofreader.)
I will buy the next book in the series because it can only get better.
Change Up is the fifth novel in the Homeruns Series by Sloan Johnson. Each book is about a different couple so can easily be read as standalone. I, myself have read them all and love each couple for different reasons. With that being said I recommend reading them because they are amazing. I loved Kevin and Clint's story because they were two men that on the outside would never be together and proves to never judge a book by its cover...
Kevin and Clint play baseball in the major leagues for the Mavericks. They get along but aren't really close. Not until there are some room changes mid-season. For the first part of the new arrangement there is uncomfortable silence. They both don't know what is going on with their heads but their bodies seem to be attracted to each other. The problem? Kevin has been in a committed relationship for the last few years. With a woman. And Clint only has his foot out of the closet. Then one night changes everything. They said it was only sex. They don't want to make things awkward but when Clint is so hot and cold with Kevin he doesn't know what the man is thinking. Kevin knows Clint doesn't do commitment but sometimes actions are louder than words. He doesn't want to lose what they have but he doesn't want to just be a fuck toy either. Can they figure out what they want before it's too late and they lose in the game of love?
Like I said...I loved this story! Both, Kevin and Clint are treading in new territories. Kevin knows how to be in a relationship but only with a woman. One amazing and understanding woman. I love Amber! And Clint hasn't been in one single relationship. This is all new to them. They have to learn that patience, communication, trust, and support are important to any kind of relationship even friendship and teammates if it's going to work.
Overall...it's a great addition to the series! I was so excited when I found out Kevin and Clint were getting their own book. I did not see that coming! I love this genre for many reasons but when I feel like I am getting close to a book funk, I need to read about two sexy men with a story. The steamy sex scenes are icing on the cake. Sloan never fails me when I need this. Thank you, Sloan for another amazing story! I laughed, cried, and got hot and bothered.
***P.S...THERE IS NO CHEATING!!!!!
Quotes:
“If you hate me tomorrow, try to blame the alcohol.”
“Talk to me, Goose,” I said, trying to make him laugh.
It is currently 1.44am as I am starting this review, and I have just finished Change Up.
Woah, what a complex story. Kevin and Clint were an fun couple to read about once they both had their heads out their asses (pun totally not intended)
Loved catching up with old crew and experiencing life back as a Maverick.
As much as I enjoyed reading this I found myself not being to melt into the story as easily as I was hoping to. It felt like I was regularly rereading back over parts to make sure I read it right previously. the character and storyline seemed to be abit choppy as such, and I feel like we missed some scenes which could of been vital in progressing the story more.
don't get me wrong, the story moved at a steady pace and it was easy to stay interested in it, I just felt it was a bit jumpy in places.
in saying all of this, it was good to read another installment of Homeruns series and I can't wait to see what Ms Sloan does next!
I had to skim through this book a lot. There was so much internal dialogue. I had to look for the quotation marks just to see when they were actually having a conversation. I really don't see how anyone would want to be with Clint. His attitude about relationships made no sense, and this went on and on throughout most of the story. Didn't like him in the beginning of the book and didn't like him at the end. The whole relationship felt contrived and rather ridiculous, and Kevin and Amber's relationship did not help make the story any more believable or enjoyable.
This quote from the book speaks for itself. "I might be wrapping my head around the fact that I was in a relationship with a dude for the first time, but I wasn't going to let anyone try to put a label on my ass that I was the sensitive woman in this thing." (This is not something the MC says in the beginning but then sees the error of his ways; it's at the 90% mark. But there's also some even worse stuff that he says at the beginning when he's trying to act "straight.")
It is no secret how much I love the boys of the Mavericks, but after the little hints and glimpses of things in Sweet Spot, I have been impatiently waiting for Change Up.
What a complicated complex tale we have here. Kevin and Clint's story is never going to be an easy one for them. Throw in Kevin's girlfriend Amber and things just got a whole lot more complex.
I loved the push/pull between our lovelies. The confusion, the hurt, the anger, the sorrow. The heat, the chemistry.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to slap some sense into them at times, or to hug them both, and get them to hug it out.
I loved that we got more of the Maverick boys from the previous books. Little snippets of their lives, enough to keep me wanting more.
I am going to say thought that I did not connect as well with Kevin and Clint as I did with previous couples in the book. I am not sure if it is because I have been unwell when reading and it took me out of it a little bit, or if it was that the characters at times were so disconnected from each other? Don't let this dissuade you though! I am sure it is just me!
This book (and all the books in the Homerun series) can be read as standalones, but I love that the characters each keep popping up in the next book.
Ms Johnson has become one of my must read m/m authors, and I can't wait to see what she brings us next.
While Johnson's writing has improved from book to book, this one took a step back. A lot of time was skipped over. The MCs had one sexual encounter and then bam, time skips and we're told they're fooling around frequently. They have sex and then bam, it's a month or two later and we're told here having sex frequently. It diminishes the connection by skipping forward so much.
The author accidentally writes the names Kevin or drew sometimes where it was supposed to be Clint. So that was fun trying to figure out what the hell she meant.
But the thing that made me want to put it down was this little tidbit of biphobia. Please, authors, stop with the irrational fears of guys leaving their same-sex partner for a hetero relationship. They could just as easily leave them for another guy. Being bisexual has nothing to do with it, but I read in nearly every book with a bisexual character that they fear they'll be left for a hetero relationship. Annoys the hell out of me. The only reason I'm finishing is because this happens at like 90% of the book so im almost done and I've earned to see the happily ever after.
Quote:
"And since he went both ways, he could’ve decided the best way to get over me was to get under, or over, a woman. At some point, I’d have to address how insecure I felt, knowing that I didn’t only have to worry about him getting sick of me jerking him around. He could just as easily decide that he missed the easy life he had when he was playing it totally straight. He could leave me and live a perfect little hetero life."

I loved this book and once I started it I couldn't put it down. I've really liked this whole series, but Sean and Mason have always remained my favorite of all the couples/trouples. With this book, Clint and Kevin, slide into a solid second place. I absolutely loved them. Their chemistry was amazing, something that is seldom a problem with Sloan's books. Some characters just fit and Clint and Kevin make it into that category. I wanted to strangle Clint at times and tell him to get his head out of his ass, but I still loved him. I loved Kevin's snarkyness. He had no filter from brain to mouth and it made for interesting and entertaining reading at times.
I wasn't so sure about Kevin having a girlfriend. I kind of cringed at first, but she turned out to be really cool and an awesome friend and supporter of Kevin and Clint's. The story is well-written, and moves along at a nice pace. I love the cameos from the former characters. They are done well, but you don't see or hear from so many that it's overwhelming to keep track, and even though we do see these previous characters from the series, all of these books can still be read as a standalone, but why would you want to? If you haven't read the series, pick it up, you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended!!
Change Up (Homeruns #5) by Sloan Johnson 4.5 stars M/M Romance I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
Clint is known for being a well rounded closer. He knows his job and tries to stay out of the spot light. When he receives a new roommate, Kevin, things become more of a struggle. The attraction that he has to Kevin is undeniable, but Clint doesn't want to rock the boat when it comes to his life - his career.
Kevin is a no holds bar, life in the moment kind of guy. He has an amazing girlfriend, best friend in Amber and he knows that even though he is usually the life of the party, something is missing from his life. When Amber encourages him to explore his attraction to Clint, it is with reluctance that he begins that journey.
When the two of them come together, there is a lot of chemistry, but not a lot of talking. Both characters seem to lack the ability to communicate effectively. This is both a challenge and a blessing. Clint is worried that he will repeat his past and Kevin is worried that he doesn't know what he's doing.
Overall, this was a great story with a semi-YA feel to it. The writing flows nicely and the relationship is complex.
Oh where do I begin?!? First of congratulations on another great book! I always love reading Sloan’s books and seeing what she will come up with to keep me wanting to read more. I love the way she makes the characters come to life. I really feel like I know them. Ok so, I loved Kevin’s character. He was funny and had that socially awkward thing going. He knew it and he didn’t care. He also had the sweet side that showed just how big his heart was but he had the strong side also. Then there was Clint who was messed up and afraid he would never find the perfect love so why try. Most of the time I wanted to reach in and pop him upside the head to knock some sense in him. He drove me a little crazy but I still loved him. Then we can’t forget Amber. I LOVED her and she was great. Everyone needs an Amber in their life to help push them in the right direction. She was funny and brought that little extra to the story. It gave some new friends and a peak at our old favorites too. Can’t wait to see what is next!
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This is the fifth book in the series - and yet is fresh and new in its topic and plot, Still based in the world of baseball, and at the only gay friendly club in the game, we get to see two current players finding their way to a possible future together.
I enjoyed the story, although I found that the constant changing of POV was on occasion confusing, especially when they were speaking to each other. I had to go back and check who was speaking more than once. That said, It didn't stop me wanting to know what happened next. As things heated up, the story was strong enough to distract me from the issue.
It was also lovely to catch glimpses of the relationships from previous books in the series, both Nick and Eric are instrumental in a few scenes, which was absolutely in character!
I really enjoyed this book, there were a lot of emotions in this one. You either wanted to kick Kevin & Clint's a** or hug them to pieces, lol. I laughed, I cried & got a bit angry. It was a great story that you'll get hooked on first page & not want to put down & eventually fall in love with these two men :) A TBR
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was definitely one of my favourites of the series so far. The chemistry between Clint and Kevin was completely off the charts. Clint really doesn’t know what to take of his new roommate Kevin. He’s a loud mouth, has no filter between his mouth and brain which gets him in trouble a lot. He’s been with his girlfriend Amber for a few years now and she’s the only person who knows his secret, that he’s not as straight as everyone thinks. He’s actually bi but has never been with a man. Amber helps him to be true to himself and gives him the nudge he needs to finally cross that line. Clint has known he’s gay for years but has been totally focused on the game, so he’s never allowed himself to be distracted by a relationship. When Kevin finally tells Clint what’s been putting him in a sh*tty mood and that he’s actually bi. Things quickly heat up between them after Amber and Kevin break up as she moves to LA to live her dream. Both Clint and Kevin are adamant that they’re just having a bit of fun, but things turn pretty serious.
I loved that when Clint was an a*sehole to Kevin while they were out for dinner with Clint’s parents and Kevin was that hurt that he walked out that Clint’s dad tells he that he’s an a*sehole and that he needs to do whatever to earn Kevin’s forgiveness otherwise he’d regret it for the rest of his life. I also loved Kevin’s heart to heart with Eric and then his heart to heart with Clint’s dad when he went to Clint’s to try and find him so they could talk about what happened. Clint’s dad told Kevin that he’d given Clint and piece of his mind after the way he’d treated you and that he’d give Kevin the same treatment if he thought he was being an a*sehole towards Clint. It made me smile when he told Kevin that family doesn’t just mean bl*od. I do kind of wish that Kevin and Clint ended up exploring some k*nk, since how much Kevin loved watching all types of p*rn no matter how weird it was. I’m looking forward to reading PJ’s book next. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.
Change Up is a delicious sports romance by Quinn Ward. It was previously released under the pen name Sloan Johnson. If you didn't read it then, be sure to read it now. And if you aren't familiar with this series, go read it! It's awesome.
When Clint and Kevin become road roommates, things get interesting. Of course, it doesn't help that Clint catches Kevin watching porn.
Both these men are closeted. Clint's a closeted gay and Kevin meanwhile, has a girlfriend who's the only one who knows he's bisexual.
I love this book. I love this series.
Kevin and Clint are delicious together. They're hot as sin. And I love the way the sparks fly between them long before they're even together. The tension is high and the chemistry between the two is awesome.
And hot damn, dancing with Nick and Cody! Wow! Love those two and the way they talk to Clint. Simply sizzling.
But even better is the first move between Kevin and Clint. Smoking!
This is a tale that's enjoyable from start to end, as the two go from being awkward together, to hooking up, to friends with benefits, to more. I appreciate all the little things about these guys. Clint's feelings about Amber are wonderfully honest and raw. And, damn, I love Kevin's hesitations in the bedroom. I love everything about his fears.
There's no cheating, but Kevin is definitely sleeping with Clint while still with his girlfriend. And it's tough for Clint to deal with it. But not for her, as she's definitely all for them being together. It's refreshing to find a female character like Amber.
Everything about Change Up makes me happy. This Quinn Ward book is just another fabulous sports romance in this addictive series. I can't get enough of these men. Thank you Quinn for these incredible men.
3.5 stars. This story was a doozy oh boy. I almost didn’t read it because the blurb put me off - I’m not really into mmf (it’s not) and that’s what I thought this would be but I thought “what the heck” and gave it a go.
The exploration of sexuality in this story is...messy. Which is pretty realistic to be honest but also a little maddening. I had two minor pet peeves with this narrative. The first being Clint hiding his sexuality from the team; at this point it seems like half the team is gay so his hesitance is a little confusing as a reader. The second is Kevin’s inability to commit to Clint. He conducts his “open” relationship with Amber while fooling around with Clint - no cheating, it’s all clearly communicated like consensual adults - and that’s just...not really for me. Not my flavour.
Aside from that, the connection these two have is spicy. I loved the way they came together and Kevin’s eventual self realisation. Also loved the snippets of the characters from the earlier books - who doesn’t love found family :’)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It has been a joy to get to know Kevin over the past few books and I was happy to see that he would have his own book.
Clint doesn't really know what to make of Kevin. Once he realizes that Kevin isn't as straight as he thought, they pursue a friends with benefits relationship that grows into more.
I love Amber and how she's the guiding force in ensuring that Clint and Kevin end up together.
As always, I love checking in with the rest of the gang and I love that the books have moved forward in time. This was a great addition to this series and I can't wait to read the next one!
This one surprised me a little. Quite frankly I was ready to hate it. In the previous books, I thought that Kevin was a bit of a crass idiot so I wasn't looking forward to spending a whole book with him. However...I loved the way that he grew on me and became a much more rounded lovable crass idiot. Plus the romance was tip-top with oblivious boys and terrible communication. Very enjoyable.
OMG I love these guys so much. Kevin changed so much as a person in this book I absolutely love him and how can you not adore Clint. These 2 made me swoon they were so perfect for each other and the way they developed their relationship and grew as individuals together was just so perfect. So happy they got their HEA together!!! 5/5 ⭐️ wishing I could give this one more!!!
All I know was that this story felt like mass confusion!
Considering I had to keep going back to the start of the chapter to figure out who was " I " talking and who was " HE " talking!. Both of these guys were too much alike considering they didn't want a relationship, only sex, lying, avoided each other, didn't want to TALK, and hiding in the closet. Then there was the "girlfriend?" That was a roller-coaster of a story. THANK YOU, QUINN! ENJOY!
This was a sweet romance, but dang Clint and Kevin are thick! It was painful seeing these two come to terms with their relationship, yet the sex was hot and the ending satisfying. The story could use another round of edits though as there was some confusing name swapping and typos. Other than that another good tale in this series.
This has become one of my favorite series! I love these guys and their loud and crazy found family! I can't believe there is only one more book! I want more! But seriously, nobody write smart and sexy characters like Quinn Ward. Can't wait to start the next one!
A lot of things on this book made no freaking sense. Motivation of two main characters seemed forced. “The big breakup” used to move the plot was unrealistic. Halfway through I just started flipping pages to be done. Also abundance of internal dialogue killed me.
I feel like the Clint from the first couple of chapters was much different from the rest of the book. I really did not like him and I felt bad for Kevin.
