A nice ghostly mystery that makes you feel good to have read

A beautiful story in a lovely setting with characters you grow to truly understand and care about. Well plotted and paced. Would definitely recommend!

Gave this a 3 star because I got sick of hearing how much the husband loved his wife.

Very Fast Paced

I enjoyed the twists and turns this ghost story took. The characters evolved as the story developed and you were able to see what they were made of. Once again, a book I can highly recommend.

The title of this book was enticing. A little research by the author would have been nice. There are no mountains in Illinois. That was the first slap to my head. Really? Very predictable. I think I'll pass on other books by Hazel Holmes.

While the story shows promise at the beginning, its ending is quickly predictable. It's simply too easy to see what is going to happen when the couple buys into setting up their "haunted" guest house. The "ghosts" didn't happen for me. Also, the descriptions are somewhat confusing. For example, when the decor is said to mix Victorian with modern, the image doesn't work. I like a setting to live. This one had promise but no completion. There are suggestions for the remodeling but too suddenly they're done. It felt that the author wanted to move on quickly, too quickly, back to the plot. Also, there is nothing new here to tickle the reader's thoughtful participation. It's the usual and overdone tale of newcomers moving to a place that is mysterious and then running off to the local library for background. And we aren't fooled that the nice neighbours are obviously the enemy. It's a simple, but too familiar tale that plods along according to formula. I tried, but lost patience and left before the last page.

Book was exceptionally written very well. The author draws the reader into the situation and place as you get to know the people and past history. Although it is listed as a book dealing with ghosts, it does not go off the far fetched end that so many authors want to take you, but makes you wonder if this could actually happen. Good story with twists will have you guessing 'who dun it' the whole time.

I don't know what to say, other than I felt as if I was reading someone's high school English project. I purchased a set of the author's books and decided to give her the benefit of the doubt, but found the second book to be just like the first. I usually love this genre, but will stay clear of other books from this author in the future, at least for now. Her writing gives me the impression that she is young and inexperienced so perhaps she will grow as an author with time.

OK Whodunit

I wish the book had dialogue that moved the story along, but too often it seemed like it was just filling space. The list of suspects were so few it was easy to guess whodunnit in the first quarter of the book. The author also over-explained things again and again; made me feel like she thought her readers were dumb. I suspect this is an early work. She has a good story idea but its delivery wasn’t what I had hoped for.

Good character creation

It was a great book that I was able to read through very quickly. I didn’t find it frightening though and figured out the murderers early on but still wanted to read on to see the story line play out. I would definitely read another book written by this author.

To east to figure out the outcome

I like anything supernatural! My heading I wrote was because I figured out the plot within a few chapters. Once I met the main characters ,I knew who murdered the family previously to the new owners! I wish had been more substantial mysterious. It was just to easy! Need more plot twisting. Still it was a ok read.

Boring

I couldn't get passed page 220. It was exhausting reading about what Ezra thought and felt, and what Clara thought and felt. Too much psychological debate and very little action. I got the sense that the author needed to fill up more pages and added these long paragraphs about what was going on the characters' minds.

Never too late to learn a lesson!

Loved all the characters. Loved the emotional pain that needed to be healed and enjoyed being a part of a new journey with this family. Surely a sequel will come out driven by new adventures the bed and breakfast will experience. Loved the journey.

This book was so predictable. Like so many of these "riveting haunted house mysteries", it started out with a dead relative giving the protagonists a haunted house, (or in this case the money to buy one), and it always turns out that the person or people who are kindest to them when they first move in are the bad guys. At least this author threw in a red herring to try to throw you off.

Rose reads

What a great way to show how a couple can build their lives. Even while being frightened by those and living a nightmare of horrors. I enjoyed reading this story very much. I look forward to reading more from Hazel Holmez.

Entertaining read

My first story by Ms. Holmes, an un expected little gem. You do care about the characters, but I wasn't completely pulled in - I wasn't part of the story. I won't hesitate to try another book by this author though.

It was a well written story with great detail. My only issue with the book is how stupid the main characters are. How closed minded she is once she thinks she has things figured. Still worth the read though.

The pace was far too slow, with many details that could have been omitted. I had the ending figured out about 25% into the book. I would have liked the paranormal aspect to have been highlighted more to really amplify this story line.

the main characters did not act or speak like real people. they were robots! there were also only 5 main characters that weren’t dead, so it wasn’t a difficult mystery to figure out. the second time a character showed up, it was just obvious they did it

Actually bought a tear to my eye

Amazing on so many levels, not only a great ghost story, but some real important life moments and lessons in there as well. Loved it from start to finish, thank you.

A great read. Kept me guessing throughout.luckily this family accepted the house and its occupants...so that they all could go home.

Good plot

This could have been a terrific story but it needed a great editor to lift it from the mediocrity it currently is.
