A WISHING SHELF BOOK REVIEW 7th March 2021 TITLE: PEAK SELF-CONTROL: BUILDING STRONG WILL POWER TO ACCOMPLISH IMPORTANT GOALS AUTHOR: SAID HASYIM
Star Rating: ****
‘Accessibly written, this is a well-crafted self-help book offering advice to people who want to achieve their goals but often don't have the willpower to do it.’ Wishing Shelf
REVIEW Everybody wants strong willpower. But how do we get it? In fact, what is it and how do we replenish it when it begins to run out? In this self-help book by Said Hasyim, the author has put together a wealth of information on the subject. Written in a chatty, informal sort of way - and, as a result, highly accessible - people who find it difficult to ‘keep going’ will find a lot of helpful advice within this text. Said Hasyim, who seems to have a plentiful supply of willpower, looks at such topics as Why Self Control is Hard, Willpower Limits and Increasing Willpower through Mental and Physical Exercise. And, I must say, it's all very interesting and thorough. The author, who I see has written a number of books on related topics, seems determined to help people to attain their goals. His writing seems very ‘genuine’ and ‘honest’, and I felt very comfortable listening to his advice. So, can I recommend this book? Absolutely. Who to? Well, if you are the sort of person who can't resist an extra slice of chocolate cake even though you know it's killing your long term goal of losing weight, this book might be of help. I'm not saying this book will give you the willpower to resist that cake, but it might help you to understand why you can't resist it and how you can go about developing your willpower to do better in the future. And any book that can possibly do that, has my blessing. Enjoy! (The book, not the cake!)
This is the kind of 'self help' C level executives need to read, understand and internalise. And its exactly the kind that will fit into their schedules.
Said Hasyim gives us a clear, filtered, executive summary on various critical aspects of will power and self control.
These come with practical steps and principles that can easily be understood and will directly maximise and optimise your life.
Reading this once was a pleasure and highly beneficial but Im definitely keeping the book on hand for reference over the next 6 months as I try to implement the practical side.
Looking forward to more excellent literature from Hasyim and ill be checking out the rest of the 'peak' series.
Being a software crafts and an agile coach for the last 20 years, I m always pursuing the ways to improve my willpower. Believe or not, willpower his an essential compound to achieve greatness in the software industry. When Said, proposed me to read his book about willpower, it was an opportunity for me to know more about it. Said is not just another scientific working on theory, he pursued the same goals than me, improving our life and our work. His book reflects his passion on the subject and I learned things, and I am grateful he propose me to read his book. So now I propose my followers to read his book.
It turns out our motivation is limited. Spearheading temptations shoved on you only weakens your will. Without a strong control of our willpower, we are doomed to fail any goals we set ourselves to achieve.
I'm glad to have discovered this book. I've followed the guides in the book and it's been a consistent 3 weeks of daily exercising for me. The longest streak I've ever had. I am full of energy now, and ready to employ more positive habits into my life.
It turns out willpower is real and exhaustible. The author covers complete details of practical willpower use. I can now choose to use my willpower more wisely, thanks to this book. I was expecting some examples of the habits types so I can see which one I currently fall into. But I suppose that is not the essense of this book. The willpower explanation alone is life-changing.
