There is a guitar teacher in YouTube who says that he can tell that a new student isn't going to do very well if they utter one phrase when he starts teaching basic music theory: "But I know this already." He then goes on to say that, as of the time of the video's recording, he had read thirty books on basic music theory and was starting a thirty-first. Further, he says, every time he has done this he's gained a new perspective or insight that has deepened his appreciation of music.
Reading this book's cover or skimming through it, you might feel a tendency to say the same thing. And you'd be right. Nothing in this book is revolutionary in concept. This is not the business equivalent of Newton's theory of gravity or Einstein's theory of relativity. So why bother? Don't you have enough on your plate a a business owner already?
What this book is is a reminder of the importance above all else of integrity in business dealings. Integrity as a business, yes, but especially on the part of you and every person you work with and for. The big, revolutionary ideas are still out there, but it's the day to day of dealing with people in an honest, respectful way that your business will live and die by.
The genesis of this book is one of love and loss; but what came out of a grieving for the sudden loss of a much beloved father and mentor is practical, solid, and peppered with relevant real-world examples from the author's own experience. That is probably the book's greatest strength and gives it an immediacy that any book based on large-scale studies cannot match (although those kinds of books can have much to offer as well). This book is focused on the small or "small for now" business. It would be fantastic if multinational companies would read this book and take its lessons to heart, but that's not its purpose.
The book does not talk down to its reader, but presents challenges and asks where things look easy on paper, but are really hard to put into practice- du hard in fact that out of every one hundred people who would read it and say "But I know this already," you would find very few living as if they really did know it.
The book is very short. I would say almost too short but, much like the saying goes in music, it's better to leave people hungry for more than to bore them with too much. This book is about running a business ethically and having a good time doing it. What's not to love?
