Silence is never an option - stand up, speak out, be the difference.
In his non-fiction debut, Stuart Lawrence talks about what he had learned from life - the tools that have helped him live positively and kept him moving forwards when times have been tough.
From role models to self-control, failure to imagination, Stuart uses his own experience to help young people - to help all people - harness the good in themselves and in the world around them, using that fire of positivity to create change in their lives.
"Believe in yourself always and give more to the world than what you take from it.”
Part memoir, part guide, Silence Is Not An Option is the perfect book for young teens who ask the question- but what can I do to help? Using role models from Nelson Mandela to his own brother, Stephen Lawrence, Stuart uses his own life experience and teaching background to create an easy to read positive step by step interactive book to help be the change you want to see. I’ve used this book to help structure teaching resources and social action sessions with young people and it's been really inspiring for young people to feel like there is actually something they can do to make a difference. A lot of it is about personal self-reflection, but this book is also just the start, to further bring in positive role models and other resources.
After being privileged to see an interview with Stuart in which his book is mentioned, off I went to buy it. Although written with young adults in mind, this book has some great tips for everyone. Reading it has given me some great insights in how to motivate myself and to learn in new ways. The lessons presented in chapter form are written to engage and teach whilst helping the reader to grow. I'd recommend this book as a tool to help change your mindset and learn to view the world in a new way
This book is difficult for me to rate as it's not really written for me, it's written for a teenage audience. However, it was quite refreshing to read a book about achieving ambitions and being the best version of yourself, as adults we often forget we have the power to mould our lives in the same way we might have when we were teenagers. Stuart is a great role model, embodying what it means to work through adversity and create positivity from a challenging situation. I highly recommend this book for teenagers and for parents looking for a way to motivate their children.
Stuart Lawrence is a former teacher turned motivational speaker and specialist in youth engagement. He’s also the younger brother of Stephen Lawrence who was murdered in a 1993 racist attack. This is a thoughtful and at times moving self-help book for children aged 10+ that draws on Lawrence’s own experiences to discuss self-control, confidence, developing passions, having ambition, life-long learning, wealth and privilege.
Feel like I found this book and it was made for me all the talk about graphic design and gcse studies literally touched my soul I can’t believe how much the author has gone through but to still stay an inspiration as he does is admiring! I loved the typography and the mini notebook activities. Though I did some of them in my head they were still effective and impacting activities I would recommend to purchase for a school audience - as here I found this book.
