Spooky arrives at a wilderness boot camp for troubled teens with two suitcases and an ultimatum: either she keeps her head down over the summer or she won’t be allowed home at the end of it. All she wants to do is survive the pyros, bullies, and power-tripping counselors, get through senior year, and start her life somewhere new. She’ll do just about anything to protect that future.

But when an encounter with another camper goes awry and ends with Spooky hiding in the woods, something else finds her. Something ancient and powerful has sent out feelers, hoping to catch a human alone. For its purposes, one human is as good as any other. Even a delinquent teen will do.

If Spooky wants to survive to see any kind of future, she will have to figure out how to gain leverage over a god. And as if the one wasn’t bad enough, a pantheon of dark entities are lining up between her and the life she’s always wanted...

For fantasy fans, comes one girl’s journey through dark worlds of magic, gods, and monsters.

Allison Kimble has an effortlessly descriptive and humorous writing style. The plot of Strange Gods is delightfully peculiar. It’s original, unpredictable, and engaging. It reminded me a little of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy , with some of the outlandish things that happen, the odd things characters will say, and the offbeat twists and turns in the plot. Kimble takes the simple “Hero’s journey” plot template and makes it fresh.

Laurel, who prefers to go by “Spooky”, is your typical teenager, despite being sent to a camp for delinquents. She’s an ordinary girl. She’s a little self-centred, but not overly selfish. She’s self-conscious, as demonstrated by how she brings up her over-sized ears frequently in her inner dialogue. She’s desperate for friends and longs for her parents’ acceptance. Oh, and she’s also humanity’s only chance to save Earth from certain doom.

The camp that Spooky has been sent to that is designed to “reform” delinquents is hilariously inept and borders on the darker side of rehabilitation. There is quite a bit of satire to the way that this is done, and it reflects on our society’s way of handling people that don’t fit the mold. The camp counselors preach “trust”, when it’s clear even within the very same paragraph that they do anything but “trust” the teens.

While the book is full of kooky bits and other parts that had me simultaneously scratching my head and chuckling, the book isn’t without its deeper themes. The book preaches acceptance, and Spooky has several meaningful, heartfelt moments with her new friends.

Strange Gods features an eighteen year old, but the book is appropriate for all ages. I’m not 100% sure, but it seems like it’s likely the first in a series. I’m looking forward to exploring what else this author has to offer, and hopefully I’ll get to meet more of her strange gods...

A bunch of angry teens thrown together at a creepy camp in the middle of the woods for troubled teens? Check. A forbidden meet-up makeout behind the dumpsters? Check. A large frog God who kidnaps the main character, Spooky, to tell him human stories? Didn't know I wanted it, but check. This story was fast-paced, taking the reader to so many unexpected places and original well-fleshed out dimensions. Each character came to life, the worlds popping out on the page. Not only was it a fun romp in a strange multi-verse of Gods, but it was a look inward. Spooky learns more about herself, opens up, and grows as a character. Her transformation is elegantly done--interesting and SO relatable. The middle gets a bit wild, but gripping. The ending, my friends, was awesome! I loved the problem solving. Everything coming together full circle. This is a debut author, but you can tell Alison is a sci-fi/fantasy writer of the highest order. She’s very detailed. If you like Valerian, Jupiter Ascending, and Orson Scott Card, check this out!

Over the years, I have gotten increasingly alarmed at how particular my needs have become when it comes to storytelling, whether literary or cinematic. My itches seem so specific, and those that can scratch them are so few: Neil Gaiman's sweetly tongue-in-cheek forays into the fantastic, Ted Chiang's quiet and observant ability to gently turn paradigms upside down, China Mieville's maddening yet exhilarating world-building, Jeff VanderMeer's heavy-lidded plain *weirdness*.

This book scratched ALL of those itches. I shrieked, I clapped, I gasped, I am desperately wishing for an online forum in which to have late night discussions with other SF/Fantasy lovers theorizing: What. Comes. Next.

I digress. This book, this book, this BOOK: whimsical, delightful, and even terrifying at times...come on, I want every ice cream to have this flavor. The stage is set with Spooky (aka Laurel Specki), a defeated teenager who just wants to get through summer at juvenile boot camp so she can move on to a new chapter in her life. In true YA fashion, that is not at all what will happen - in fact, so much happens that is not what she thinks or wants to happen that it will make your (and her) head spin. She meets a god in the woods, and the story just keeps on unfurling from there. A beautiful, weird, eye-opening, world-building unfurling. Take it from me when I say that you won't be able to rid your mind of the universe and implications of Strange Gods for a long, long time.

In the end, the stories that stay with me are the ones that make me so happy that they exist, that someone thought them up and wrote them down on paper with so much love that you can feel it when you read it. Alison Kimble is one of those writers, and this is one of those books.

What a fun read! You should definitely pre-order this YA Sci-Fi novel.

Number one: the protagonist’s name is Spooky, and that’s just amazing.

Number two: she is such a unique heroine who goes on a personal journey throughout the INSANE things that happen to her.

Number three: the book was super fantastical and fun and reminded me a bit of a Wrinkle In Time, which is one of my favorites.

It’s an incredibly unique story that entertained me from beginning to end. Highly recommend! 5 stars for me.

Strange Gods is a captivating tale of a young girl, Spooky, and her relatable struggle with self-worth. As her life takes an unexpected turn, she embarks on an incredible journey, meeting fantastical gods and extraordinary creatures along the way. And the deer! The writing snagged my interest at the start and when the ending came, I was wholly unprepared. Thank you for writing this novel, Alison! I cannot wait until the sequel!

THIS BOOK. I was so intrigued by the concept - weird boot camp in the middle of nowhere with punishments tailored to each individual???? yes please?? And then a main character (named Spooky!! SPOOKY!) who falls into a sort of parallel universe and meets a god and ends up on a thrilling adventure of EPIC proportions??? It was weird in the most delightful ways, it was funny, it was just a lil creepy, and had me thinking about it constantly. The character development was top tier and I honestly cannot wait for the next book because that ending was just 🤯

Thank you to Alison Kimble for sending me the eARC in exchange for an honest review. I HONESTLY truly loved this book. Preorder it as soon as it’s available and then read it so we can talk about it. K thanks.

Okay I’m gonna jump right in: this was a wild ride and I loved every second of it!

The writing style was so easy to get into and simply so enjoyable I wouldn’t even notice how quickly the chapters flew by. At the same time this book was SO descriptive! I don’t know how you can make up so many creatures and beings and make them all come to life in my head because of the detailed descriptions so well and manage to NOT bore me either! There were so many details but it never felt overloaded or like an info-dump. I’m seriously impressed by that!

Then let’s get to the characters! I instantly loved Spooky. I think her voice as a teenager was so so authentic and just felt real. I connected with her within the first few chapters and never stopped loving her. I think her character arc and character development were amazing!

Elliot - oh god - where to start? I just love him! He was also seemed just so real and he was such a great character especially paired with Bree and Spooky.

And then Bree - just yes. I love me a prickly, defensive girl that can hold her own and she’s exactly that.
This dynamic trio really stole my heart!

The whole story itself was *chefs kiss*
I didn’t see any of the twists coming which I throughly enjoyed and the whole idea is so damn cool. The camp, the gods and how it all came together was really cool to read and I had such a good time!

All in all I really loved this book and gave it a solid 5 stars cause I just had so much fun and really enjoyed myself. I did NOT see the ending coming tho…
Can’t wait to read more from Kimble - I’m still shook that this is a debut!
I highly recommend this if you like teenagers thrown together to save the world, creepy gods and camps and dynamic trios!

If Neil Gaiman took a modern stab at Alice in Wonderland I'd like to think you'd get something like Strange Gods. Alison Kimble's debut novel feels and reads more like the work of a seasoned vet. She weaves together an imaginative tale with ease and style, creating a world that is both easy to get lost in and enjoy. Once this story starts picking up steam it's hard to put down. The protagonist is lovable and someone I wanted to hug throughout her whole journey. Alison has no problems putting her MC through hell and back. Her characters aren't the usual cookie cutter archetypes of normal YA novels, instead Alison has created characters that jump out of the pages, grow, and stay with you long after you've finished reading. While Strange Gods is a stand alone novel, it's left open for possible future adventures and visits to this world. I for one can't wait to see what's next!

An exciting and fantastical tale of an unlikely team of Gods and troubled teens joining forces to save Earth

This book is an excellent example of important life lessons for all ages with added humour and eye rolls at teenage surliness! 🤣

The story and themes are very well constructed through captivating dialogue, very evocative and very vivid description!

Its shows humanity at it's most vulnerable but it also displays a courageous strength when the time approaches!

I really really loved this book! Alison Kimble wrote a future hit fantasy novel! I'm really excited to see this BLOW UP! 😁

If you enjoy fantasy, you will LOVE this! This takes you off the planet and you'll get sucked into a new world! 😁

I am so excited Alison Kimble reached out to me to read this book. It was very well written and so descriptive. At first I felt it a little slow, but still I couldn’t stop thinking about what would happen. It really picked up and I got to a point I didn’t want to stop reading. The world, well, worlds she created left me wanting more. She has quite the creativity and imagination and reading Strange Gods felt like an honor to be inside her head.
Now, I’m literally left wanting more with that ending. I hope there’s a second book because I am so intrigued by this story!

What I Liked About This Book

Spooky visits a number of different worlds over the course of the story. These worlds are well-imagined and wonderfully described.

Each character has a back story that makes you feel for them and want them to succeed.

My favourite character was Elliot, he takes the situation he is thrown into in his stride and is forgiving and supportive towards Spooky.

Unique concept

What I didn’t like

It took me till about a third of the way through to get into the story.

Strange Gods is an incredibly inventive story that contains plenty of action, adventure and a tiny touch of romance. I think that this book will appeal to you if you enjoy the YA Fantasy genre.

First and foremost, we would like to thank the author for reaching out and providing us an advanced readers copy of this book and we apologize if it took us awhile to provide a review since we had to compile our thoughts for this.

First thing that we absolutely agreed on is the book feels like a mix of Spiderwick and Percy Jackson. You guys would definitely get the Spiderwick reference once Spooky's adventure begins.

Another thing that we agreed on is that yes, we did enjoy this read but we feel like we would've enjoyed it more way back (back when we were so hooked on Harry Potter and Percy Jackson). Nevertheless, it was refreshing to get lost in this book.

How did we come up with the Percy Jackson reference, you asked? Well, think, Camp Half Blood for delinquents and also, the adventure may have started with Spooky alone but she ended up being accompanied by 2 more campers on her adventure (or should we say misadventure?)

If you're up for some magical and fast paced read, Trizia and I highly recommend this book. The protagonist, the setting, and the so called gods will definitely get you hooked from start to finish. The ending would also make you want to have the sequel asap. I mean, honestly, we need it! Why did it end the way it did?!

Sometimes, all you need is an adventurous read to snap you out of your reading slump and thankful that this book was hands down that type of read. This book with this amazing cover will be out this coming July 20! You guys might be looking forward for this but Trizia and I are already looking forward to the next book (I hope we do have that sequel).

A rivetingly dark YA Fantasy that will ensnare you with it’s gargantuanly bizarre Gods, magical realms and loveably delinquent teenagers.

Sent to a wilderness boot camp for the summer, Spooky aka Laurel Specki has been given an ultimatum:keep out of trouble or she won’t ever be allowed home. All She wants to do is finish high school and start her life somewhere new, she’ll do just about anything to make it happen.

When an illicit nighttime encounter with a fellow camper has her hiding in the woods, spooky ends up in the company of an ancient being-one who’s not keen on letting her leave without a dangerous bargain. In order to survive to see any kind of future she’ll have to navigate the strange whims of this peculiar God.

I really enjoyed this fast paced, dark YA fantasy, I loved Alison Kimble’s writing style and the characters were wonderfully written- I was particularly drawn to Spooky and the emotional transformation she undergoes throughout he novel; though I did like Elliot and Brianna as well and found their backstories made me really empathise with them.

The Gods were expertly written and equally peculiar and perfectly intriguing. I was really pleased that they weren’t just extra attractive humans with superpowers but monstrously powerful and alien-esque which was very creative.

Overall this was an amazingly well thought out (and written) YA fantasy debut that was richly creative and genuinely entertaining. Like a dark supernatural version of Holes,if Stanley Yelnats was forced to do the bidding of a slightly unhinged,earth-obsessed God.

If you enjoy YA Fantasy or Dark Fantasy, then I urge you to check this out, it’s really good.

I also want to thank the author, for providing a digital ARC, in exchange for an honest review.

I want to start this review off by saying, the imagery in this book is FANTASTIC and out of this world (literally)! I could vividly see the worlds and creatures described and brought to life. The book is a fast paced read and it’s definitely the kind of book you don’t want to put down once you start reading it! The ending left me at the edge of my seat and with my mouth open in surprise. I cannot wait for this book to come out for all of you to take a step into the magical journey I was placed on!

THIS BOOK !!
I was in a reading slump prior to picking up this ARC and then continued to devour this story in less than 24 hours. And that ending!! I need a second book asap.

The main protagonist, Spooky, is everything you want in a character. An unsuspecting heroine? A dark past? A girl willing to travel to the edge of the world and back? Yes please.

This book is strictly YA and has a lower spice level, however I was completely gripped by the love interest. Feeling so many emotions over these characters. The snarky mean girl? The sweet boy with a tragic future? This book makes you feel things.

If you’re a fan of grand adventures, unique worlds, and wicked gods, then I highly recommend picking up this book

Wait a second, isn’t this book a part of a series? Cause it totally has the potential.

A horror-themed fantasy story

the writing style was good, considering this book is the author’s first book. The world building, fairly amusing after the half.
& I liked Elliot too toward the end.

But sadly, I couldn’t connect with the book. It wasn’t for me.
For one thing, the plot was boring & I found it slow. It was weaving ahead, but not in an exciting way.
The pace was slow.
The premise was small, black & white, very strict & unreasonable. & something just didn’t make any sense for me. The world building was fairly better, but not complicated or interesting as I liked these kind of multiverse novels be.
But most importantly, the real reason I didn’t enjoy the book was because I couldn’t care for almost none of the characters. Not a relatable protagonist, bland & boring & didn’t exactly believe easily what had happened to her (I know it was hard, but come on! it’ll be boring after you read the thought three times already, go into action) & didn't see the consequences of her actions.
& the fact that she was a delinquent, didn’t increase my sympathy either.
after the half, it felt like a middle grade that stuff just happened randomly, just to fill the plot.
don't get me wrong, I LOVE good, fun middle grades, but the problem here is, it is boring, & with bland, not captivating characters & no fun.
I probably should stop YA, in general...

A big thank you to the author for the ARC! I absolutely adored this book! It was so well written, creative, and imaginative that I am amazed this is the author’s debut novel. This is a YA fantasy novel that follows Spooky, a teen in a summer camp for delinquents, as she accidentally stumbles into the adventure of a lifetime. When she is kidnapped by the god Carcass, she finds herself forced to tap into strength and courage she never imagined that she possessed. Spooky and the other characters in the book are intelligently written and the dialogue flowed so well. I can’t recommend this book enough for fans of YA and fantasy! I will definitely be checking out this author’s subsequent works!

There is summer camp, then there is Camp Dodgson. It’s Spooky’s last opportunity to start over. She HAS to make it through this summer. There is no other option. But when gods and monsters come calling, she just may lose everything.

I’ve only read a few authors who can completely surround you in the world of their books without you knowing. The world building was lyrical and all encompassing. I felt like I was at Camp Dodgson (as awful as it would be to be there). Travel between worlds, encountering gods and monsters. I LOVED IT!

If you like dark YA fantasy, mystery with a time crunch, crazy gods, and a smidge of romance, PICK THIS BOOK UP on July 20th!!

It reminded me of THE INHERITANCE GAMES, but with a fantasy element and less romance.

This book was such a great read!
-This book had such a unique plot/setting. It gave me Ocean at the End of the World vibes in the best way possible. You meet many gods in this book and they are all so fascinating to read about and learn about their various worlds.
-The main character was extremely relatable. If I had read this as a young reader I would have really connected with Spooky who we follow throughout the book.
-This book is great for readers of all ages. I would have enjoyed it when I was younger, and I still enjoyed it as an adult.
-THAT ENDING...I won’t spoil it but...if you read it lets talk.

This was a book unlike anything I have yet to read in all of the best ways possible! We have this story filled with multiple universes and gods that are described so perfectly by the author that despite how outlandish they all sound I was able to perfectly imagine every little bit of it- from a god with a face like a frog to a god that is… almond shaped with spaghetti-noodle-like arms encompassing it? Oh, and don’t forget a tiny lizard man with a top hat. It all sounds so fantastical (and you’ll have to trust that the author describes it all much better than me 😹) but I was deeply entranced in every.single.minute of it.

This book keeps you on your toes with faster pacing, but any and all questions you have are answered throughout and you’re never left feeling lost or confused. You really jump into this novel and strap in for the wild and wonderful and creepy ride that it is. This was a well thought out story and while reading I could tell the author put her heart and soul into it.

I also appreciated how relatable the main character, Spooky, is. Her internal struggles are something that so many 18 year olds (or anyone of any age!) go through: struggling with self identity, her place in the world, and saving earth. (We’ve all been there right?) in all seriousness I loved growing with Spooky and having Elliot there to challenge every single one of her self doubts. I am now convinced that we all need an Elliot in our lives.

On a final note, I loved the ending. It was something I wasn’t expecting and it definitely moved my wee heart to tears. I would love to see the author continue this story in some way in the future, but I can also appreciate it as it is and how it leaves us imagining.

The title really says it all, folks! This book is STRANGE. And I loved every bit of it.

What a strange book! But definitely in a good way. It's a funny coincidence that I was listening to a true crime podcast about Elan school at the same time I started this. The horrible teen delinquent camp Spooky and other kids were in was very similar, though not totally as horrible as real life schools/camps like that which have actually existed.

But anyway, I liked the beginning of Strange gods a lot, Spooky was an interesting character, and when things took a supernatural turn, I was even more intrigued. The whole thing with Carcass and stories of humankind were an absolute joy to read, so fascinating and effortless! After Spooky, Elliott and Bree began their journey to talk to the god of Earth, the events sometimes got a bit fuzzy, and sometimes I had difficulties figuring out what was happening and what certain things or places looked like, and I had to do a lot of double takes while reading (this might be because english is not my first language, and I'm giving high praise to the author for not making the gods and other creatures look like just basic humans or animals, but something completely different and unique). I sort of wish there had been illustrations to help me picture what everything looked like, but of course that would take away the reader's freedom to picture everything in their own way.

I loved the ending , and I loved how unique and different this book was from a typical YA fantasy story. I can highly recommend Strange gods to all of you who enjoy quirky and unique fantasy settings, and thank you to Alison Kimble for reaching out to me and offering me an ARC of this little gem of a book. I'd like to read moar plz. :)

Did you ever want to know what it would be like if Stanley Yelnats from Holes was dropped into a bizarre Wizard of Oz-type quest in order to save the world from gods you didn’t know existed?
Well, if you didn’t, you should have… and Strange Gods stepped up the challenge!
With twists and turns you won’t see coming, Alison Kimble’s wonderfully written adventure novel kept me enthralled from the first chapter through the last. The leading character of Spooky is a familiar semi-reluctant heroine who finds herself plunging into the middle of a unique battle no one even knew was brewing until it was too late, and the reader gets to see her inner (and outer) struggle with herself and the world as she thought she knew it. The storyline Kimble has created opens up new and interesting worldly planes existing outside what we know as Earth, and invites the reader to see what isn’t seen.

Fans of Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern that found themselves woefully yearning for a sister story, should do themselves a favor and add Strange Gods to their To-Be-Read list.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book to read it early and write an honest review. Honestly, I really enjoyed it.
This is a story about a girl called Spooky (it's a nickname) who is at a camp for troubled teens where she meets a God who sends her on a journey to save the world.
I loved Spooky as a character. Even though we don't really have much in common, I could relate to her a lot. Especially, because she struggles with wanting the Change to happen. With that she means, for her life to change for the better at the beginning of a new school year. I could really relate to that because I had the same wish every year at the beginning of the year (although my school experience really wasn't that bad). So, for that reason I was already rooting for her the whole time.
I also really liked the other characters: Carcass, the God, is really funny (not on purpose) and Bree and Elliot are also extremely relatable and likable characters. In general, I felt like all the characters were really three-dimensional.
Also, the setting was pretty great. I liked the different worlds and the Gods that were completely different from each other.
So, as you can see, I really enjoyed this story and I really hope there will be a sequel.

I feel as though most of what I want to say has already been said in other reviews. So in order to not regurgitate too much, I'll just say that if you are a fan of YA fantasy where character development is great, this is the book for you.
Additionally, Alison Kimble was able to create a fantasy that is unique in both plot and character personality.
Highly suggested.

Thank you to Alison Kimble for reaching out and sending me an e-arc of her debut novel! - To be released July 20th.

This was the weirdest and most unique book I've read in a long time, which really goes to say something considering I've read a lot of strange books in my time.

This was genuinely like nothing I've ever read before and the concept is so intriguing. The characters were what fully sold this to me. I liked Spooky as a main character because she was very real. Often times in YA books I can never quite connect with the saviour-complex-perfect protagonist but this wasn't the case here.

Spooky is flawed, snappy and selfish and I like that she both acknowledges this within herself and challenges her behaviour throughout the novel.

I also liked the dynamic between Spooky and the 2 other main characters characters Bree and Elliot. These characters, who never previously liked each other, are thrown together in a completely absurd situation.

Instead of just blindly going along with each other as often seen in many YA books (eye roll), there's actually conflict between the three. Bree in particular is shown in the beginning to be to typical popular bully type character and throughout she's snarky and mean but that's what made her all the more interesting to me.

I think my only gripe with this book and the reason that it's not a 5 star read for me is because there was a LOT of dialogue, some of it unnecessary and a little tedious at times which stuttered the flow of the novel.

"For the one truly committed to a goal, there is no possibility that could stand between her and success."

In her debut novel, Alison Kimble spins a strange tale about immortal gods, their thirst for power, and the defeated teenagers that have to put up with both. Laurel "Spooky" Specki has been shipped off to a boot camp for teen delinquents for the summer, after her desperate actions to make her parents notice her went a step too far. Now stuck in Dodgson with a bunch of other problematic kids, all she hopes for is a second chance, when the summer ends. For that, of course, she has to survive the camp..., which quickly takes a back seat in her list of priorities when an ancient god that calls himself Carcass takes her into her realm, demanding that she tell him stories, and maybe do something far more dangerous and world-changing..

"She would rather wait in the shadows than fake it in the sun."

Even though this has been marketed as a YA novel, I personally think that readers of all ages will be able to enjoy Spooky's story. Any fan of a good "let's go on a quest" trope will be delighted with this book, in which different deities take turns tasking Spooky with their whims and desires if she wants them to help her. There were pretty Percy Jackson-ish vibes in this sense, as well as a certain Gaiman-like worldbuilding.

Spooky is by no means a Chosen One. For starts, she was picked up randomly by Carcass because she happened to be in the forest, and there's also the fact that she's nothing special. She doesn't have any particular talents, and she's not even really motivated to do what's asked of her at first. All she has are her fears, and an unconventional nickname. It was quite refreshing to see a YA protagonist having second thoughts about the mission, about the responsibilities thrust upon them, and about herself, if I'm being honest. Spooky's doubts and fears felt very real to me, and I just wanted to give her a hug from time to time! The fact that she started out like this made her character development arc all the more satisfying, and turned her into a main character I slowly became invested in.

"You're upset because you're so afraid of being selfish. Selfish people don't usually end up shouting about not caring enough."

In regards to the plot, it took me a while to get truly absorbed. Maybe this is me having some kind of issue with books, in general, as of lately, but the way it started didn't really grab my attention? I forced myself to keep reading for the first bunch of chapters, and I'm relieved to say that, once the "true" plot (AKA, the godly affairs concerning the Earth) began, I did feel pulled into the story and curious to know how it all would play out. Still, the ending wasn't closed, and actually opened a number of questions regarding more than one character. I don't think the author has any plans to write a sequel to "Strange Gods", and I was a little sad to realise that we'll be forever left hanging in regards to those final pages of the book.

This is a book you'll probably enjoy if you like reading about scared teens trying to make decent choices, gods messing with the world, interdimensional adventures, and unlikely Chosen Ones.

Thank you to StoryOrigin and the Publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Spooky is at a camp for troubled kids. All she wants to do is keep her head down and get through the summer and get on with her life. After she gets kidnapped by a God obsessed with stories, convinces him that an internet connection is even better than only one person and robs an electronics store in the process, that dream seems very far away. But the God has another deal for her, she helps him save the earth (and his precious internet connection) and he keeps her out of prison.
The premise of this story when summarized sounds silly. It does. But I am not lying when I say I fell in love with this book. The characters were complex, the worldbuilding was intricate and completely unique. The way the book was written was gripping. I loved the ending (but I still have tons of questions). What sounds like a silly bedtime story turned out to be a story of found family, trusting yourself and worlds beyond my imagination.
There is barely a romance, which was refreshing, especially in YA fantasy. The bit there was felt natural and as slow as you'd expect a first romance to progress.
While I do miss diversity in certain points, the sheer amazement at how well-written and thought out this story is overshadows it.
I recommend this book to anyone bored of reading similar books over and over. This absolutely unique novel will blow you away. I especially recommend it to teens about 13 to 15 years old, but this is a story you can enjoy at any age.

I was instantly hooked by this story and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see how it would all play out. It’s such a gripping story and I’ve definitely never read another one like it. It had me gripping my head in my hands and I swear I felt the stress and anxiety the characters were going through and I loved it. Parts of the story had me all up in my feelings and other parts had me laughing and cheering. I loved that the story made me feel such a wide range of emotions, it had me all over the place! My one complaint throughout is that I didn’t really feel anything for our main character Spooky, I enjoyed the side characters, especially Carcass, more than her. I wanted to know more about her story but I felt we never got that full connection with her. That detail aside, this remains an excellent story and I particularly enjoyed the ending. It wasn’t at all what I was expecting and it has me crossing my fingers for another book because I want more of this story!

Eighteen-year-old Spooky is a camper at Dodgson ⛺️, a camp for delinquent teenagers. One night when she sneaks out of her cabin to meet another camper, things don’t go exactly to plan. This is a young adult contemporary fantasy that is exciting, coming-of-age, and adventurous 🗺.

We both really enjoyed Strange Gods and thought this was a unique story. It’s definitely targeted towards teens and young adults, but it still has dark elements to keep us older readers interested 🤩. While this story takes place on Earth and in the contemporary world, the characters in the book visit other worlds and creatures. The world-building was done really well, and Alison was able to give info about how the world works without taking away from the story. Our 16 y/o selves would have absolutely LOVED this 💕. We also really liked Spooky. She was flawed, but that’s what made her relatable. Spooky definitely learns throughout the book how her choices affect others and through that becomes brave and courageous 💪. We also really enjoyed the side characters of Elliot and Bree - they both had their own interesting backstories. The Gods in this book were very different from other books we’ve read, but we enjoyed that aspect of it and found it very refreshing. Alison definitely created a unique universe that overlaps with the world we live in today. We also really loved the ending of the book and are excited to learn more. If you’re looking for a YA fantasy adventure with unique world-building and relatable characters, we highly recommend Strange Gods 🖤!
