Dr. Orison Swett Marden (1848-1924) was an American inspirational author who wrote about achieving success in life and founded SUCCESS magazine in 1897. His writings discuss common-sense principles and virtues that make for a well-rounded, successful life. Many of his ideas are based on New Thought philosophy. His first book, Pushing to the Front (1894), became an instant best-seller. Marden later published fifty or more books and booklets, averaging two titles per year. "Live in the very soul of expectation of better things, in the conviction that something large, grand, and beautiful will await you if your efforts are intelligent, if your mind is kept in a creative condition and you struggle upward to your goal." Orison Swett Marden (1850-1924) was an American writer associated with the New Thought Movement. He also held a degree in medicine, and was a successful hotel owner.
Marden was born in Thornton Gore, New Hampshire to Lewis and Martha Marden. When he was three years old, his mother died at the age of 22, leaving Orison and his two sisters in the care of their father, a farmer, hunter, and trapper. When Orison was seven years old, his father died from injuries incurred while in the woods, and the children were shuttled from one guardian to another, with Orison working as a "hired boy" to earn his keep. Inspired by an early self-help book by the Scottish author Samuel Smiles, which he found in an attic, Marden set out to improve himself and his life circumstances. He persevered in advancing himself and graduated from Boston University in 1871. He later graduated from Harvard with an M.D. in 1881 and an LL.B. degree in 1882. He also studied at the Boston School of Oratory and Andover Theological Seminary.
This book is packed with information on changing your mindset. It talks about regeneration of the mind while sleeping and places so much emphasis on positive thoughts and actions. Each of the chapters could be a book in itself. It also gives faith great importance. That everything comes from a source. Your faith is your friend the author says.
Excellent, excellent, excellent advice. Perfect for the person who wants to get themselves together but may not even feel like they could. Great book to start with if one wants to read a course of self-help books.
Another classic self-help book with an emphasis on the power of positive thinking and a winning mindset. The author argues that our attitudes and beliefs influence our success and happiness. If you can overlook the religious references and sections, and some over lengthy paragraphs on science facts, this book can inspire developing a positive mindset.
Would love to sit down across the table with Marden over a up of coffee. What an experience that would be! What can I say? I have become an avid reader of Marden's books of which there are many. Each one seems to be better than the last with my favorite of all being Pushing to the Front. That was until I read The Victorious Attitude - WHAT A GREAT BOOK! That's a statement, not a question. I cannot imagine anyone reading this book and not coming away without a MENTAL TO DO LIST of thoughts and actions to do to improve your life but more importantly the lives of your children and their children provided you follow along with the guidance Marden writes of.
His books have proven to me to be a treasure trove of wonderful thinking. I am amazed that he wrote his books in the late 1890s early 1900s and the contents are more valid today than they were in his day. I am more amazed that few if anyone I have spoken to are aware of his books. What a loss!
If you wanna be a winner, act like one. Act as the person you really wanna be. That is the core message of this book. As also the believe in the infinite shines through, believe in God and Christ. But all is in accordance with your own attitude. Be who you wanna be.
It circles over the same idea throughout the whole book. However I was in a slump when I read it and it successfully bored me out of it with boredom itself.
The Victorious Attitude rings with the truth of our oneness with the Creator and each other. God is omnipresent. When we fully understand that nothing is impossible.
“The great prizes of life are for the courageous, the dauntless, the self-confident. The timid, hesitating, vacillating man who listens to his doubts and fears stops to make up his mind, and - the opportunity has passed beyond his reach.” Page 21
