I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I read the first book in the series and thoroughly enjoyed it and have looked forward to this book the second in the series. Fiona has been grieving the loss of the love of her life and that is where the story picks up. I would recommend reading the first book before reading this book. The mystery of who is killing prostitutes has Fiona disguising herself as a prostitute and helping to solve the mystery even though she remains a virgin. Several men desire her but there is very little romance in the book. The first part of the book was a bit of history of the previous story, and I thought it was a bit slow. The middle of the book showcases each of the male leads and interactions with Fiona and I enjoyed that. The ending solves the murders. I rate it 3.5 (less)

The world is capable of such treachery...
For some reason I enjoyed A Treacherous Trade more than The Business of Blood. Maybe it was because I knew what I would be getting when I started the second instalment of The Fiona Mahoney Mysteries or it could just be I was in the mood for a new Kerrigan Byrne story. It was probably a bit of both, to be honest.
Some days I think we as a world have progressed so far, then you turn on the news and we are still being bloody idiots. We still have men disrespecting women, using their power to hurt, and not taking responsibility for their actions. The only difference is that now, women can be just as disrespectful, power-hungry and faultless. Kerrigan Byrne has a talent for highlighting injustice, but she also does not shirk away from illustrating that not all men are evil, just as no woman is perfect.
I loved getting to know Fiona better in this story as well as the men in her life. I am completely unsure of whom I want to be her happily ever after. Again, we are left with Fiona staying the innocent little flower (kinda...sort of) and I'm actually happy about it. I don't want her rushing off and getting deflowered by the wrong man. I am happy that she's getting a bit of flower-plucking, though. 😉
The mystery was great, the bloodiness wasn't over the top, and the heart-pounding scenes when Fiona was in jeopardy, made this my kind of thriller. Yes, it probably wasn't as romantic as I normally enjoy, but there were enough emotions between the characters I didn't feel at a loss. I definitely want to come back for more just to find out whom she will pick her flowers with.
Loved it...but then again, I am Kerrigan Byrne's biggest fan so it's not surprising.
That ending, though... 😉

Enthralling continuation!
Oh my goodness! Victorian clean up specialist Fiona Mahoney is surrounded by men of power! And such men! Like the Scotland Yard Inspector, Grayson Croft and The Hammer, dangerous lord of London’s underbelly, alongside the exotic assassin, Aramis Night Horse, and yes, Jack the Ripper. All take an interest in Fiona. Fiona is London’s premier post mortem sanitation cleaner. The sanitation work is how Fiona puts food on the table. Her true passion is investigating who’s killing prostitutes in Whitechapel. This has become her overriding raison d’être after her best friend and prostitute Mary Kelly, was butchered by Jack the Ripper.
In this issue Fiona has slowly come out of the dreadful place she’s been in following her ex fiancé and childhood friend, Father Aidan Fitzpatrick’s death, to be given the news that another young courtesan has been brutally murdered. Not Fiona believes, by the Ripper. Her investigations lead her into dark alleyways, physical assault and DANGER!
Aunt Nola (Fiona’s somewhat unusual aunt who communes with the spirits and taro cards) had it right when she warned of “Betrayal, Fiona. They’ve told me. Someone close to you is going to betray you…or worse. You are going to betray them. Lovers, I think. Your lover? Or maybe someone you love? Someone will be in love, and then…treachery. Treachery will tear them apart.”
Depravity is nothing unusual for the ladies of the night but here new depths are reached, even as Fiona and Croft’s sister Amelia search for answers.
Ending on a note that has me absolutely tantalised with anticipation, and screaming with frustration, I am on tenterhooks for the next in this compelling series.
Let’s just say that this tale has all the energy, passion and suspense that the best of Byrne’s titles give.

I like my books light, entertaining, with romance and a little mystery. This book is soooo not that. It is tough, gritty and downright depressing. It also is full of unnecessary prose and was just plain slow. Halfway through I swore I would not read the next book, then she ends this one with the one question that would make me even consider opening the next book. Ugh! I just hate that!
Fiona Mahoney had her heart ripped out by the man she loved, not once, but twice. Now he's dead and she has been enticed out of her morning by the murder of two prostitutes. But these are definitely not the work of Jack the Ripper who Fiona has vowed to hunt to her dying day. As it turns out, Inspector Grayson Croft's sister, Amelia, wants Fiona's help to solve these murders. Grayson is not on board with their plan, at all.
As Fiona enters the world of the high-priced prostitute, she discovers there is no love lost between these women who ply their trade in a luxurious place and expect protection. Fiona is undercover to find out what the other women know, not to service customers, but the other women have other ideas and Fiona finds herself face to face with Aramis Night Horse, "The Blade", an underworld assassin. Their encounter is the highlight of the book.
In a meeting with Jorah Roth "The Hammer", the boss of the London under world, he leaves Fiona with no doubt as to his intentions toward her or that he intends to continue their business dealings. He also has dire warnings about the situation Fiona has found herself in. Later she discovers that these women have a sideline that may very well have gotten two of them killed. Jack is also watching, and he doesn't like what Fiona is up to. 3 1/2-Stars

[Book #2 in “The Fiona Mahoney Mysteries” series. Can this be read as a standalone? I did, but as I’m currently reading the 1st book I can see where I missed the important beginning’s of Fiona’s story. It’s very useful to this one. Is best to read them in order.]
After I read Kerrigan Byrne’s 7-book Victorian Rebels series.. AND LOVED, I spotted this soon-to-be-released 1890’s dark historical MYSTERY mentioning Jack the Ripper. So of course I had to read it!
Our heroine is none other than Londoner Miss Fiona Mahoney whom Ripper has been in contact with through his letters. She’s obsessed with catching him—he’s obsessed with her.. or so you’d think, yikes.
Fiona works a job cleaning up grizzly crime scenes as a Postmortem Sanitation Specialist. After two prostitutes are murdered in Whitechapel, her cleaning services are requested by ex-courtesan Amelia Croft at a brothel on Fleet Street where the last woman is killed. After viewing the crime scene she suspects this latest victim could not be attributed to Ripper.
Amelia, and her friend Beatrice—the Orchard’s madam, request Fiona to investigate by going incognito as a prostitute in that very brothel.
Amelia’s brother.. Detective Grayson Croft.. is against it, calling it a harebrained idea. Amelia wears him down enough to look into the murders. And to keep Fiona safe.
Fiona catches on.. a little too late.. that she might be trusting the wrong people. And when she does find something or it finds her, it’s nothing I’d ever.. EVER GUESS.
This is a.. THRILLING.. CHILLING.. mystery with a smidge of pining.. and a smattering of heat.. between Fiona and several admirers. The one man I can see it, but the other two are questionable at best lol. As with many Kerrigan Byrne books there’s some violence, dark scenes and language which I’ve come to expect. Just know that going in.
I loved the dark’n gothic vibes.. so creepy, and finding twists around every turn kept me invested. If you’ve enjoyed her other books don’t hesitate to pick this up. I read in a day, it’s that good! I plan to continue on with this series. Oh one more thing.. it does end with an enticing cliffhanger! #teamcroft 🤩📚🔪 This is out 3/8/22.

I'm really loving the Fiona Mahoney mysteries. And what is not to love we have an unmarried woman of 29 in old school England in the days following Jack the Ripper's ravaging of prostitutes. She was once on her way to becoming one after the death of her family. But after her childhood friend was Jack's last victim she found a different calling of cleaning up after the dead and solving a mystery or two along the way.
A great follow-up to The Business of Blood, Fiona is once again in the middle of a mystery where someone is killing prostitutes in the city. The sister and of inspector Cross, a former prostitute herself, has asked Fiona to help her find the killer of her friends. The best way to do that is to get close to the women in the brothel the prostitutes worked at. While Inspector Cross is not a fan of this idea he can't seem to deny the sister who sacrificed so much for him.
Fiona will play the part of a prostitute in hopes the women of the brothel know something that will eventually help her and to watch some of the patrons to see if they might have had a hand in the deaths. She will also need to call on all three of the men circling around her at some point to help in this farce.
This has been a slow burn in the romance department and of the three men who are tempting enough to rid Fiona of her pesky virginity I can't decide who I'm pulling for the most. I've at least narrowed it down to two.
Jack the Ripper is also following Fiona in her adventures. He has taken a special interest in her and might not be killing on the regular now but he has killed for her and he still sends her letters. Fiona has vowed to find and end the man that took one of her last friends away from her.
Such and interesting story and the conclusion was satisfying. I had guess part of the murder mystery correctly but was still surprised by how it all turned out. What a fun mystery series. Looking forward to the next book of the series.

Audio arc review: 4.5 ⭐️

How does Kerrigan do it everytime no matter the genre?! I’ve been intrigued with Fiona since day one of Business of Blood and continue to be fascinated with her. I love that we pick up right where the first book ended and get a little more insight into Fiona and what really drives her. Kerrigan is known for venturing into the dark side with her writing. It’s why I love her books so much. She doesn’t shy away from the grit. She draws you in like a moth to the flame. While this is not a historical romance there is still an underlying element of possible romantic interests and not just with one man either. Who will Fiona end up with that is the question.
Bloody. Jack the Ripper. Gritty. Dark. Intriguing. Strong & fierce heroine. Unputdownable storyline. This is KB’s signature and I love her.

Fiona is fierce and a little ignorant, but I loved following her into a brothel ti figure out who is killing prostitutes who used to be Amelia Croft’s colleagues. Amelia is the sister of the detective Fiona has worked with in the past.
Along the way, we have confirmation that all the men in Fiona’s life want her. She told some time off to mourn her former finance (Adrian, who jilted her to become a priest and murderer, wow). Now, she’s still overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy when it comes to sex, but she’s clearly interested in something happening…but with whom?

2x reading...still obsessed with who she is going to bang....
We start the book with talk of the heroines virginity. The middle discusses it and the book literally ends with a cliffhanger about her virginity. Weird.
However, that strangeness aside, this was a great follow-up to the first book. I wish I could say I was more interested in the murder mystery, but the subject of what MC the heroine had better chemistry with had me more intrigued. I liked all of the men in her life (just ignoring some are murders). The rebel in me wants her to bang The Hammer (no pun intended), the divergent pull wants it to be Night Horse, but the traditionalist in me wants Croft.

Totally disappointed.
#1. I HATE duet narrations.
It also doesn’t help that I reread (listened) to book 1, right before reading this installment. Going from Justene Eyer’s lovely Irish accent in that audio book to this nonsense was very jarring.
#2. The “bad guy” was fairly evident from the get-go.
#3. It was just too long and felt really preachy - man bad, woman good.
Just one big meh.

To have a woman struggling to break out of chains placed upon her within the very thrilling, paradoxical time period of Victorian England is frankly, a hell of a story to tell, because the possibilities are endless. Or at least, it's Fiona Mahoney's fight here, who somehow places herself in the crosshairs of very dangerous people as she for some inexplicable reason, goes on a self-righteous quest to chase justice for murdered sex workers. Jack the Ripper hence, is the man she's got in her sights, just as the legendary killer has her in his.
That Byrne puts this smack dab in the middle of the Ripper murders makes the series a rich fantasy-weaving ground for throwing speculations, red-herrings and suppositions at the unsolved murders during this chaotic time. And undoubtedly, I was fascinated.
But it is slow-going, given that there is a constant tendency towards purple-prose-type dialogues, introspective musings, self-questioning and reasoning rather than actual action itself. There's also something incredibly obsessive about Fiona as she finds herself constantly out of her depth, then (quite stupidly) placing herself in situations where she shrugs off danger in search for 'truth' in her naïveté while trying to keep her own head above water. In short, TSTL in our modern day terms, especially during the times when she really needed to step back rather than take on things larger than herself.
Those who are looking for a romance would be disappointed that there're just some ripples in the water, with 3 questionable men sniffing around Fiona's seemingly preserved virginity as she conducts her business among the 'sullied' women. I'm not entirely sure where this is really leading as well, but if you enjoy the murky and hypocritical vagaries of Victorian morality and sexuality, this is a book that resonates with it as the characters do talk themselves in and out and around sex and what it should or should not be.
Quite a bit of history trails behind 'A Treacherous Trade'; reading what happens in the first book is essential to understanding the sequel as there's a lot going on at every point in time, and Byrne shows no sign of getting these pesky hanging threads to converge just yet.
This turned out a middling kind of read as the storytelling sagged a little in the middle, before the conclusion came like a rush in the last chapter without a consistent and an upward build-up. Still, it's a series I'm hoping to see to the end, with my fingers crossed.

To have a woman struggling to break out of chains placed upon her within the very thrilling, paradoxical time period of Victorian England is frankly, a hell of a story to tell, because the possibilities are endless. Or at least, it's Fiona Mahoney's fight here, who somehow places herself in the crosshairs of very dangerous people as she for some inexplicable reason, goes on a self-righteous quest to chase justice for murdered sex workers. Jack the Ripper hence, is the man she's got in her sights, just as the legendary killer has her in his.
That Byrne puts this smack dab in the middle of the Ripper murders makes the series a rich fantasy-weaving ground for throwing speculations, red-herrings and suppositions at the unsolved murders during this chaotic time. And undoubtedly, I was fascinated.
But it is slow-going, given that there is a constant tendency towards purple-prose-type dialogues, introspective musings, self-questioning and reasoning rather than actual action itself. There's also something incredibly obsessive about Fiona as she finds herself constantly out of her depth, then (quite stupidly) placing herself in situations where she shrugs off danger in search for 'truth' in her naïveté while trying to keep her own head above water. In short, TSTL in our modern day terms, especially during the times when she really needed to step back rather than take on things larger than herself.
Those who are looking for a romance would be disappointed that there're just some ripples in the water, with 3 questionable men sniffing around Fiona's seemingly preserved virginity as she conducts her business among the 'sullied' women. I'm not entirely sure where this is really leading as well, but if you enjoy the murky and hypocritical vagaries of Victorian morality and sexuality, this is a book that resonates with it as the characters do talk themselves in and out and around sex and what it should or should not be.
Quite a bit of history trails behind 'A Treacherous Trade'; reading what happens in the first book is essential to understanding the sequel as there's a lot going on at every point in time, and Byrne shows no sign of getting these pesky hanging threads to converge just yet.

Kerrigan Byrne set the premise so exquisitely in Business of Blood with its complex and intriguing characters, that in Treacherous Trade I felt the fluidity of the mysteries as one, and for that I warn that though possible to understand and enjoy the books individually, for the full Mahoney experience, one should read them together. Trust me, and heed my warning, you will be left wanting even more, just like I am. I DESPERATELY need more Fiona and all her ‘wolves’!

A Treacherous Trade is book 2 in Kerrigan Byrne’s Fiona Mahoney Mystery series. I read the first book, The Business of Blood, right before jumping into the arc of book 2 and this book picks up right where book 1 left off. This series centers around Jack the Ripper, the heroine’s best friend was his canonized last victim. And Fiona has been trying to track down the murderer/get justice for her friend ever since. This story takes place in 1890, so 2 years past the Ripper’s known last crime and other murders are happening…could it be the Ripper again, or someone new? Fiona is Irish, working in London as a Post-Mortem Sanitation Specialist (aka crime scene clean-up crew), and the book has a very cat-and-mouse mystery vibe to it. Book 1 was more heavy on the gore, this book takes a break from that as Fiona goes undercover at a brothel to try and figure out what has happened to a couple working-ladies who show up dead.
Kerrigan Byrne is one of my favorite historical romance authors, and I knew going into this read that this one was going to be different…it’s a mystery-suspense and does not feature a romance (at least not in these first 2 books, I’m not sure what the series will eventually bring). So I was prepared for it to read differently than the 3 series I’ve read from her before, but I still did have a hard time with this series. They are shorter reads but did take me quite a while to get into the story both times. I do still feel like there are a lot of characters and no one has been well-developed enough for me to fully understand or appreciate them. Maybe a personal thing as well, but I don’t always like having real-life historical figures as characters in fictional reads, so having Oscar Wilde in this series I just haven’t feel like was needed. Fiona’s character has a very “not like other girls” vibe where just every person she meets is into her and how different she is and obsessed with her virginity. And from what time we’ve had with her character, I just don’t get it or feel pulled to her. I also just wasn’t surprised by the mystery aspect of the murders and am not sure if this is a series I’m going to want to continue with.
That said, I do like Fiona’s Aunt Nola and think she would make an interesting main character as she continually seems to have everything figured out. 😅 I think this series would be great for someone wanting mystery, who enjoys Jack the Ripper stories, or who likes the television show Miss Scarlet and the Duke (Victorian era heroine detective).

Fiona Mahoney takes time off from her Post Mortem Sanitation duties. She reluctantly agrees to investigate two prostitutes’ dubious deaths, when the authorities refuse to do so. Fiona knows the case lacks any of Jack the Ripper’s usual trademarks. As her investigation takes a darker turn, she feels torn between three men’s interest. Which man will Fiona choose? And will this case help her become closer to revealing Jack the Ripper’s identity?
Fiona has come quite a long way since the first book. However, she is not done growing. Fiona has endured an emotional setback, and she is trying valiantly to move past it. I like that she is growing aware of Night Horse, the Hammer, and Croft’s interests in her. She understands the pros and cons with each man.
Can I say I am Team Croft? I am happy that Inspector Grayson Croft plays a prominent role in this book. He is my favorite among Fiona’s possible love interests. I cannot resist Croft’s gruff and rough-around-the-corners demeanor. He means well, but he has a rough way of showing it. There are lines that he refuses to cross, no matter what. I like how Croft is starting to show his interest in Fiona. Yes, I am aware the two will face many problems, but I feel he would be a better fit for her.

I love stories about Jack the Ripper and was drawn to the Fiona Mahony Mysteries. The first audio gave us one narrator, but this time around, we have two. While I loved John Hartley giving voice to the males, particularly the men vying for Fiona’s attentions, I wasn’t as taken with Sarah Mollo-Christensen and felt her accent was off, but I enjoyed the audiobook and will continue listening to the series.
Jack the Ripper wasn’t at the forefront of this story, but was always present. The case was suspenseful and well crafted. Fiona cleans murder scenes and is asked to investigating the murders of prostitutes. She poses as one of them in a house of ill repute.
Fiona is surrounded by men of power, and they are all vying for her attentions. We have Scotland Yard Inspector Grayson Croft and the Hammer, a dangerous lord of London’s underbelly. Then there is Aramis Night Horse, a trained assassin. Last but certainly not least, she has caught the attentions of Jack the Ripper. All four men play a part in the investigation. All of them are unique, fleshed out and intriguing in their own right.
The flow of A Treacherous Trade was stronger than the first book and wasn’t as grisly. I loved the interactions between each of the men and Fiona. While this is not a romance, it has romantic elements.I have the feeling all would love to deflower our feisty heroine. Because this is the second novel, the case felt stronger as Bryne had already introduced us to the world and characters. The case felt more like a mystery-thriller and kept me engaged. Bryne is taking her time with the romantic interests and allowing the listener to better get to know the players and Fiona.
We see growth in Fiona as her world and experiences expand. She still seeks revenge, but also justice for the dead. I am looking forward to the next novel. Fans of historical murder-mysteries and thrillers will want to add this series to their TBR pile.
The story translated well on audio and despite some reservations about the female narrator; I enjoyed the changing voices, particularly for the men.

I am so hooked on this series!! The characters are just so engaging and interesting. The action is exciting, just as I expect from Kerrigan Byrne. The first book seemed more about the mystery, while this one had quite a bit about Fiona dealing with events from the first book, and I loved it. The characters are so good to me that I don’t care what they’re doing - I just want to read about them doing it. The banter is funny, the emotional exchanges are deep…I just love Kerrigan’s writing.
I got an arc from netgalley but will be getting a print copy when it comes out.

The Fiona Mahoney series is now a must read. This story picks up after a period of mourning following the events in The Business of Blood, Fiona has not been able to work through her grief when she gets involved in another prostitute's murder. Are other recent death's connected and is Jack involved? The fine line she must walk between staying respectable and doing what she must for justice is once again a major plot point. As is trying to stay alive while searching for a murderer. Inspector Croft and his sister play a big part in this story and hopefully will continue to be.

3.5 stars This is the second in a series set in 1890 London after the Jack the Ripper murders. While I always prefer to read a mystery series in order, I had hoped it would be easy to jump into this series, but page one makes it clear that you need to read the first book. The story even begins in the middle of a conversation that ended the last book.
After a rocky introduction to the characters, the story picks up. Fiona’s childhood friend was one of the Ripper’s victims and she now makes her living cleaning up murder scenes, sometimes as a business arrangement with the criminal behind it. She has a connection to the Ripper that was established in the first book and she helped Inspector Grayson Croft in stop a copycat killer.
Here she’s drawn into another killing by helping Croft’s former prostitute sister Amelia find out who has killed two upscale prostitutes. Fiona’s drive drew me in, and her haunting past pushes her to speak for prostitutes and to seek the Ripper, who is apparently still watching her. She’s a fascinating character who is filled with secrets about herself and the people around her.
There’s a strange subtext around sex and Fiona’s virginity that felt out of place, but maybe that was established in the first book.
The mystery itself seemed second place for me, with more time spent with Fiona interacting with men from the first book rather than actively solving this crime. There are heavy themes about the subjugation of women, sex, and power, and coarse language to go along with it. To fully appreciate Fiona’s motivations and character arc, it’s necessary to read the first book. Fans of the first will probably like this one and be eager to find out what Fiona decided when the third book ultimately comes out.

This picks up right where book 1 left off. The mystery of Jack the Ripper continuing, still its definitely engaging. Detective Croft is starting to show some feelings for Fiona and its just beautiful to watch. Fiona starts to actually be in the investigations to find some answers and I can't wait to see what is next!
I really enjoyed this audiobook in duet style with narrators Sarah Mollo-Christensen and John Hartley. They did an amazing job with their characters.

This is the second book in the series, however I have not read the first, yet. The Book works as a stand alone, but I still wish I had read, and enjoyed, the first so I could understand the relationships between Fiona and the men in her life.
A Treacherous Trade is an excellently written, engrossing and enjoyable dark mystery that has an incredible heroine you can't help but admire. I can't wait to see what Fiona gets up to next! 4-1/2 stars

This is a well written mystery book that keeps you guessing until the truth is finally told. A little upset by the cliffhanger at the end and assume it will be revealed in another book. The characters are well developed, the beginning a little confusing, but as the book progresses, it grabs you and doesn’t let you go. The heroine is real in her feelings and trauma that happens to her. Cannot really say there was a true hero, though I would have liked to see the enemies to lovers been resolved, thus the cliffhanger. All in all a very good read.

Though honestly really what keeps me wanting to read this series is all of Fiona's potential romantic partners, especially after this book's ending. We all know who the end game relationship is, but I wouldn't be disappointed if Fiona thoroughly weighs all her options ;)
I'm hoping Jack becomes more of a central part of the plot though, instead of just writing letters.

This book builds on everything that I loved about the first. Fiona is an admirable heroine. A woman who is aware of her shortcomings (perceived and otherwise) and unashamed of who she is. We get a deeper dive into her connections with Croft, Aramis, and Jorah. I devoured this book. It had equal parts mystery, unconventional romance, and smart humor. It was a fun book to read which might be an odd compliment given the subject matter. I need the next book before this has even released.

Fiona is always getting herself in trouble! This is the 2nd in the series and I definitely feel you have to read book 1 to follow along. I love the adventure, mystery and sleuthing! Can’t wait for book 3!

The story line opens well, with the h, Fiona, still reeling, months after the death of the love of her life (and discovery of the horrors inflicted by that man on others). Byrne can write competent HRs and, in this story, she continues the theme of Fiona searching for Jack the Ripper, but also getting caught up in the mystery of yet more deaths of young female prostitutes. That part of the storyline holds up as well as most reasonable Ripper look-alikes and, at first, my interest was engaged.
However, the constant juggling of Fiona’s trio of prospective lovers was such a distraction that I started to wonder if they were to become the main story.
While I mainly enjoyed Fiona’s first tale, I’ve decided that Byrne’s propensity to feature very violent men as the heroine’s lust interests is a turn-off for me - and, in this story she piles it on, to the extent that the “mystery” is overshadowed by Fiona getting wet (according to one of the trio, The Hammer) and excited by one after the other of the three men as she dithers about who or what she wants.
Of the three men that get the H heated, in rotation, I can only warm to Croft. At least Byrne is blessedly silent about where he is getting sex (if anywhere). On the other hand, much is made of the fact Aramis Night Horse has been engaging in regular paid sex with a number of women - who have all been having sex with many other men (and, by the way, I found the one scene with him and Fiona far too contrived, as the co-incidence of him being in the exact right place at the right time beggars belief).
Similarly, Hammer, who is equally promiscuous, seems to appear in this story to do little more than go on and on about how many men want to “take” Fiona’s virginity and bragging that she should choose him because the experience would be “god-like” (proving that she would need her head read if she took up his offer).
I get it that Byrne is creating “tension” for her readers as Fiona wanders from one bloke to another, seemingly shocked that anyone finds her sexy. What I don’t get is why, after going on and on about love and respect being absolutely vital for her before she shares herself, that the teaser of the final scene is supposed to be anything more than a blatant device to make readers buy the next book.
I gave the first book in this series a 4 star rating, in the main because of Fiona’s character, and expressed the view that I was eager to buy this sequel. I pre-ordered it as soon as I was able to do so. I’m less eager to pre-order the third book in the series.
PS The cover for this edition is a vast improvement on that for the first in the series. The design is less cluttered, the atmosphere more eerie and Fiona’s presence more dominant.

On the other hand, much is made of the fact Aramis Night Horse has been engaging in regular paid sex with a number of women - who have all been having sex with many other men (and, by the way, I found the one scene with him and Fiona far too contrived, as the co-incidence of him being in the exact right place at the right time beggars belief).
Similarly, Hammer, who is equally promiscuous, seems to appear in this story to do little more than go on and on about how many men want to “take” Fiona’s virginity and bragging that she should choose him because the experience would be “god-like” (proving that she would need her head read if she took up his offer).
I get it that Byrne is creating “tension” for her readers as Fiona wanders from one bloke to another, seemingly shocked that anyone finds her sexy. What I don’t get is why, after going on and on about love and respect being absolutely vital for her before she shares herself, that the teaser of the final scene is supposed to be anything more than a blatant device to make readers buy the next book.
I gave the first book in this series a 4 star rating, in the main because of Fiona’s character, and expressed the view that I was eager to buy this sequel. I pre-ordered it as soon as I was able to do so. I’m less eager to pre-order the third book in the series.
PS The cover for this edition is a vast improvement on that for the first in the series. The design is less cluttered, the atmosphere more eerie and Fiona’s presence more dominant.

I love the author’s books & this didn't disappoint, its dark, it’s chilling & it's thrilling - I loved it. The characters have depth, the pace is good, there’s a touch of romance & lots of mystery. I devoured this book in two sittings & look forward to more

A Treacherous Trade by Kerrigan Byrne is the 2nd book in the Fiona Mahoney Mystery series. It follows the life of Fiona, a Sanitation Specialist, who cleans up grizzly crime scenes. She is a woman of contradictions. Soft and hard. Innocent and informed. Delicate and strong. Careful and brave. Like a fox, Fiona is not just lovely, but clever mysterious and nearly impossible to capture. Fiona is obsessed with solving the crimes of Jack the Ripper. This obsession leads her to become acquainted with the seediest parts of town and mingling with the most dangerous of men in an attempt to catch the killer while also finding justice for the overlooked bawdy women of London. Kerrigan Byrne is the most talented author I have ever read! It’s not just the multifaceted characters, the intriguing plot lines or the vivid settings that she creates, but it’s her artistry with the English language that captivates me in each of her tales. I look forward to the next in the series.

Reread now that book 3 has finally come out. If my ship doesn't sail, I will be ANGRY. Anyway. Like I said last time, Fiona is a fantastic protagonist and I was hooked from start to finish, even on reread. Utterly compelling and full of twists and turns.

I literally shrieked like a banshee over that ending. And then immediately preordered book 3 because obviously.
Anywho. This was great. It was tense and creepy and compelling. Fiona is a fantastic protagonist and I loved the complex relationships she has throughout the story. Byrne does a brilliant job of depicting the gritty underbelly of nineteenth century London, and honestly? This was just one hell of a good time.

Really enjoyed this new installment in the Fiona Mahoney mysteries. She's a fun heroine, very clever and resourceful but also imperfect. Her romantic entanglements were intriguing (though she is certainly another case of the heroine who is irresistible to every single man she meets). I enjoyed The Business of Blood but enjoyed this one more since it wasn't quite as bloody and disgusting. :) I am endlessly grossed out by all the descriptions of murder and viscera and autopsies, but there wasn't quite as much of it in this book since Fiona is involved in a number of other activities besides just crime scene cleanup. The plot was fast-paced and interesting (though dark, as to be expected) and I cannot wait until the next installment (especially b/c of that cliffhanger of an ending!!).
