Hazel Longuet - Biography

Hazel Longuet is the author of the House of Scarabs series, mythological action thrillers that follow a trio thrown together by a heritage passed down their family trees for over 3,000 years. A passionate reader, Hazel’s first love was always writing, and an unexpected illness enabled her to start writing the first book in her series, House of Scarabs. She draws from her varied life experiences to frame much of her writing.

Hazel Longuet’s survived a plane crash, a revolution, and even nearly drowned twice - so, to say she’s accident-prone is an understatement! A gypsy at heart, Hazel loves to travel. She has lived or worked in Bolivia, Colombia, Egypt, Dubai, and Sweden and has travelled to every continent except Australia. She was raised on the grounds of Longleat, an English Elizabethan stately home, where she cleaned out lions’ cages and guided tourists around areas of the house.

As an international business consultant, she was lucky to work with amazing companies and gain friendships with people from around the world. She now splits her time between Egypt and England, where she’s shadowed by her devoted Rottweilers, who are rumoured to be the inspiration for some characters in her novels.

Hazel Longuet’s A Theft: A Kiya Short Read is a perfectly crafted gem, a swift, immersive, and utterly captivating dive into the intrigue-laden corridors of an ancient Egyptian palace. In just 32 pages, Longuet proves herself a master of the short form, delivering a complete, satisfying narrative rich with tension, divine mystery, and compelling characters.

The premise is elegantly simple yet charged with high stakes: the theft of Queen Tiye’s priceless, sentimentally vital earring. This isn't just a crime against property, but a blow to the queen’s heart and a direct threat to the palace’s fragile peace. Longuet immediately establishes a palpable atmosphere of suspicion and dread, where every character feels both a potential victim and a suspect.

The story’s strength lies in its focus on Kiya, the High Seer. Her investigation becomes a race against a “royal wrath [that] turns deadly,” and the pressure is expertly conveyed. Longuet weaves in elements of divine silence and political maneuvering, reminding us that in this world, the earthly and the godly are inextricably linked. The interplay between Kiya and High Priest Haremakhet adds depth and hints at a rich, larger world from the House of Scarabs series.

The prose is lush and evocative, painting the opulence of the court and the shadowy corners where secrets hide with equal skill. The pacing is impeccable, making every paragraph count in the sprint to unravel the truth.

A Theft is the ideal appetizer for newcomers to Longuet’s world and a delightful treat for existing fans. It’s a bite-sized story that feels as substantial and thrilling as a full-length novel, proving that great drama needs no extra pages, just a masterful storyteller. A superb, quick escape into a world of magic, myth, and suspense.
