The first time I have read this author, and I enjoyed the mystery. The premise is that the heroine can see ghosts and the problems this has caused her throughout her childhood and teens. This ability brings her to the attention to the Duke of Blackmoore and they marry. I had several issues with the plot. I never felt the couple were treated as Ducal nobility. People seemed to waltz in and out of the house and treated the former and current Duchess with a casualness that was odd. I can't place the era that the story takes place as horses and candles are used. A bit of the modern historical theme. The romance is sooooo tepid that I don't think even kisses are exchanged. Good gothic story but I thought the solving of the mystery overly long, and I guessed it rather early in the book.

Series: Duchess of Blackmoore Mysteries #1
Publication Date: 5/1/21
Period: ?? Not Apparent – Sometime before trains and cars
Number of Pages: 290

Since I don’t read the paranormal genre, I certainly surprised myself when I decided to purchase – and then enjoyed – this book. The mystery is well-plotted and well presented, with just enough obscure clues to cause you frustration, yet keep you reading. This is a new-to-me author and I enjoyed her writing style which captures the more formal speaking style of earlier historical periods. There wasn’t enough information within the story to get a grasp of the period in which the story takes place, and that always annoys me – couldn’t somebody just put a date at the beginning of the first chapter or something?

Lenora Hastings has a gift – or a curse – depending on your point of view. She sees and communicates with dead people and has done so her entire life. While it all seems perfectly normal to Lenora, the adults in her life can’t deal with it – when she was six, her father left and her mother turned her over to a nunnery soon after. When the nuns couldn’t deal with it, they turned her over to Headmistress Williamson at St. Mary’s Orphanage for Girls, where she lived for the next ten years. The headmistress didn’t care for Lenora nor her abilities, so she never recommended Lenora for placement into any of the employment opportunities that came to the orphanage’s occupants. Lenora was totally shocked when she was told to pack her things at once as she was leaving immediately. Lenora was excited to be going to the Highlands even though she had no idea what position her employment required. Maybe she would be a governess, or a companion, or – scullery maid, she didn’t care, she was out of the orphanage. When she finally learned what position was being offered, her jaw dropped.

Robert Fletcher, Duke of Blackmoore, has been a widower for three years. He has suffered greatly for those years because he loved his wife and cannot imagine what could possibly have caused her to take her own life. When he hears rumors of a young woman at an orphanage – one who can communicate with the dead – he immediately has her tracked down and investigated to see if she is the real article. He then has her summoned to Blackmoore Castle where he offers her marriage and a life of luxury in exchange for her ‘special’ skills. He needs her to communicate with Annie, the former Duchess of Blackmoore, to find out why she took her own life.

Annie is one very angry and confused ghost. She’s hard to communicate with because she doesn’t speak to Lenora in any way. She projects feelings and does other things and Lenora has to guess at their meanings. That communication process is very slow, dangerous, and vexing. Will Lenora be able to figure it all out before it is too late?

I enjoyed the other tangents of the story aside from the main mystery. It was lovely to see the duke come to care for Lenora and to demonstrate that caring by his actions in regard to her friend Tillie and also in regard to Headmistress Williamson.

I could have easily rated this at five stars, but there were just too many historical inaccuracies that I just couldn’t get past them. Proper forms of address were all over the place – sometimes they were correct, but mostly they weren’t. Then there was the ‘adoption’ when formal legal adoptions didn’t happen until sometime in the 1900s. Before then, there were guardianships or wardships, etc. An ‘adopted’ child could not have become the duke’s heir – the title would have gone to the duke’s brother, etc. anyway – lots of historical errors in an otherwise great mystery.

Oh I Loved this book! It’s book #1 for this series and it kept kept me guessing until the very end! Lenora Fletcher an abandoned child at six, Lenora had a difficult life because she had the special ability to see and often communicate with the dead. When Lenora is finally released from the orphanage, she expected to have been hired to be a nanny, however, that was not the case. In the sweeping backdrop of Blackmoore Castle, she is set to solve the death of the former Duchess Fletcher. With the help of Annie, there is action, mystery, paranormal experiences, and clues that help Lenora solve the mystery. The twists and turns keep you on the edge of your chair as you read on (or listen to) to find an unexpected ending. 5***** rating for wonderful writing and creative, approachable characters. The book is also available in the audiobook format with A gifted narrator, Liz Gentle. Recommend for Regency mystery lovers! ❤️

Victoria Holt-ish

This reminds me of books by Victoria Holt. I adored her stories. There is no passion or romance really, more of a story about a woman who can talk to the dead. Or communicate I should say. The Dukes first wife died by suicide and he finds out our heroine can see the dead so he offers her a marriage of convenience if she can find out why. Of course there is a great mystery and a dastardly villain. And poor Annie, the first wife, cannot rest until the mystery is solved. it took a little too long and I got frustrated because i knew what was happening and the heroine was so dense at times. Its a great story if you like those types. And I do.

I’m not sure why I stuck this out to the end. The writing is terrible, the mystery stock gothic romance, the activities of the characters are utterly implausible for their rank and the period. What drivel.

I don’t normally write reviews because I’m not a book critic, but this book has compelled me. I wanted to like the story but the writing style drove me crazy (“said” is not dead!). Lenora is 17-18 but you wouldn’t know it by her dialogue. She speaks like a much older woman born into nobility, not a teenage commoner. Her relationship with Robert is super boring. I didn’t even know there was supposed to be romance because Robert and Lenora had absolutely zero chemistry. They have almost no conflict, except when Robert tries to convince Lenora to stop trying to help Annie, a conversation that happens so often it becomes repetitive.

I thought it was weird that Lenora didn’t seem bothered that a strange (and much older) man was offering to marry her out of nowhere. You’d think she would have been more suspicious. She also did not ask at the beginning how Robert found her. That should’ve been her first question to him, especially since people have mistreated her because of her abilities. You’d think she’d be more distrustful of others.

Everyone at the castle was so nice to her, and everyone just accepted her abilities, but it just wasn’t believable. She had no conflict with anyone in the castle except when Edwin visited. This made everything very uninteresting and dull. There were also a lot of useless conversations between characters that did not move the plot along. I skipped most of them.

Additionally, the antagonists were cartoonishly evil, and most of the characters lacked complexity.

I gave one extra star, because truthfully, Lenora has the framework to be an interesting character, and has an interesting background. Plus, the premise of the story is interesting. It’s just unfortunate that the execution was mediocre. I skipped to the end to know what had happened to the previous duchess, but dropped the book at about 60%.

This book frustrated me

This had the bones to be a great 1st book in a series. However, it felt like the plot was drug out just to fill book space.
You could figure out the villain within the first quarter of the book, but had to slog through the rest of it to see it on page.
This was not fast paced, nor a well thought out 'mystery.', certainly not a romance in any sense of the word,
I was surprised at the high end etiquette and grammar of the female MC (even continuous, monotonous monologues in her head), even though she spent her life first locked in a convent and then raised in a poor orphanage where she was starved, cold and abused. Where was she subjected as to how to `speak and act' like nobility?
This book frustrated me, as I tried to like it but could not.

This story is wonderfully written and you just can’t wait to find out what happens next. The character development is so real I found myself having an actual emotional reaction at a couple of different points. The author keeps you guessing until the end. I can often guess who “the bad guy” is in a mystery but I was still between 3 people until the end. This book really has it all, mystery, paranormal, a historical Scottish highland setting and a small dash of love story. I can’t wait for the next book and I’ll know to not start it until I have time to not put it back down!! This is a stand alone book with no cliff hangers.

I Loved This Book

I fell in love with Lenora when I read all the heartbreak she had been through as a child. And yet, she was calm and accepting as an adult. I think I would have been angry and untrusting. The story was excellent. I love a good haunting and a woman caring enough to put her life at risk to help an angry spirit. I will definitely buy the next book when it comes out.

This is as an excellent read. It had a lovely romance, a woman who could see the dead, and a ghost who at times was frightening . It captured me from the first chapter, and propelled me through. There were so many places of danger in the book. It had a good ending, but I longed for an epilogue. I gave it a five because the writing was superb.

Brilliant! Captivating! Everything I ever wanted in a gothic mystery!

Castle. Mysterious suicide. Contacting the dead. A Duke. I'm in!

The story wraps you in its gothic atmosphere from page one and doesn't let you go. The writing is smooth. The ghost and the mystery of her death are haunting and heartbreaking. As each piece of the puzzle falls into place terrible secrets are revealed. You don't know what happened until the very end.

Riveting read. Spellbinding. Linger with you long after you close the book.

I loved every single aspect of this book! It was perfection. I am a fan of Nellie H. Steele and can't wait to read more of this series!

Loved it!

Normally I don’t read things that are historical because of the outdated ways women are treated. Not with Nellie Steele writing the books! Lenora is a strong and fierce character. What she went through trying to solve Annie’s death was something that only a strong person could handle. I also loved the ending!

Damn it. Can't wait for the next in series...

I really wanted to not like this book! I loved the premise of a ghost seeing heroine solving problems relating to hauntings. I did find this book to be a bit melodramatic and the heroine to be a bit obtuse at solving the crimes; but damn it..I am hooked and have to wait until 2022 read the next one!!

Lenora Hastings is born with an unusual ability, to see and communicate with the dead. Her mother, being unable to cope with Lenora's special talents, decides to abandon the young child, and after a short stay in the care of nuns, Lenora is placed in an orphanage. After realizing her limited future expectations, Lenora decides to make the best of her predicament until one day, years later, her life will changes. The Duke of Blackmoore has heard of Lenora's special abilities and proposed an arrangement. The Duke would marry Lenora in exchange for her communicating with his deceased first wife to find out why she committed suicide.
The story draws the reader, first by the unusual talent of the protagonist, then by the mystery surrounding the death of the first Duchess of Blackmoore. Lenora's otherworldly discoveries are dangerous, disturbing, and brutal. I found the story gratifying because although Lenora obtained a title, riches, husband, and a bright future, she never forgot her past, where she came from, and who her friends were.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a mystery set outside the box, enjoys historical mysteries, and is looking for a lesson in humanity.

Well my goodness, this MC said all the right things to be considered nice etc but the writing was imbued with virtually zero emotion imo. And the plot was astonishingly transparent, the big reveal foreseen since early on.

A wonderful blend of mystery, the paranormal, and a bit of romance. Years ago, I feel I love with historical fiction of this era, but had not read anything in this genre in years. This story, set in Scotland in 1863, made me glad I returned to the genre. The story is about a young woman, Lenora, who can see and communicate with the dead. She has lived most of her life in an orphanage when she is suddenly whisked away to an ‘arranged’ marriage to the Duke of Blackmoore. Years before, the Duke’s wife had tragically jumped to her death from one of the castles turret rooms and the Duke seeks to find out why she was driven to end her life. In exchange to solving this mystery, Lenora will become his wife, the Duchess of Blackmoore. Lenora does indeed solve the mystery. I have to admit, I thought I had the mystery solved early on, but I was wrong and surprised by the ending. The author envelopes you into the story with her writing, and you will find yourself not able to put the story down until you turn the last page.
I have not read other books by Nellie. H. Steele, but I noticed she has two other characters which have developed into series. I certainly hope that will be true with the Duchess of Blackmore.

Lenora's life is about to chance!

Can you imagine if you could see and communicate with the dead. Well, Lenora doesn't have to, they have been her companions her whole life. Unfortunately, for her that ability has not made her life easy. Rejected by her own mother, she ends up in an orphanage, but her life is going to soon change for the better, better than she could ever imagined. All she needs to do is enter into a marriage of convenience with the Duke of Blackmoore and use her special talent to find out why his first wife throw herself from the tower window. Lenora is one determined woman. I really liked her " I don't give up attitude. " And Robert, the Duke, her husband is a dear, understanding and ready to spoil her as she well deserves. The story moved along nicely with slow building interactional relationship between Annie, the first wife and Lenora. Believable, if such abilities do exist, I would think this one would progress in this way. Although it is listed as a mystery, I figured it out pretty early in the tale, though the author did try to throw the reader off a bit by offering more than one potential culprit. However, there was one mystery that was not solved at the end...who was the little girl? Maybe we will find out in the next book.
