A good girl follows the rules. So does a smart woman. That's why I've resisted my brother's best friend for years.
Fine, fine. Maybe the sexy, charming confident baseball player hasn't given me a reason to suspect he's thinking the same flirty, dirty thoughts as I am.
But then he starts showing up by my side at sporting events. At galas. And his eyes are saying all sorts of flirty, dirty things.
Like maybe we should cross the friends line and head right into benefits?

FYI this is not a standalone novella — it is a prequel, with a cliffhanger, for the couple in Blakely’s next release, “The Virgin Rule Book.” I didn’t realize that when I picked up this freebie earlier today. As the pages ticked by, I kept wondering when we were going to get to the romance. Spoiler alert: we don’t.
The focus of this prequel is not the couple. We get a few flirty moments. Honestly, though, I feel like I know absolutely nothing about the hero. This little story is mostly getting to know our heroine — the young, female owner of an NFL team who is pining after her childhood friend and is being set up exclusively on dates with men intimidated by her wealth and power. Not a bad setup for a heroine.
Also a bunch of couples are name dropped, who I assume are from previous books by this author. But in such a short novella it overwhelmed and distracted from the main character(s).
The teaser did its job, though — I’m now in two library hold lines for a book I hadn’t previously heard of.
This is a teaser of what the characters are like and how they know each other for the full length book - The Virgin Rule Book. You get a great feel of the banter they share and how deep their friendship is. It’s only eight chapters but I feel it will help set up the novel and have you itching for more. And if you’re forgetful like me, you can still read it after and appreciate more of this Fab couple.
The Rules of Friends with Benefits is a freebie that gives us just enough of a taste of the characters and their world to want more. It's like an extra long prologue to get us excited about the Rules of Love series. It's well written and gives us a little background about Nadia and Crosby. Crosby is her brother's friend although they've all been friends and have known each other since childhood. Now they are both successful adults in the sport world. Nadia owns a football team that just won the Super Bowl. She's young and successful and lives in Vegas. She should have all the men at her feet. Unfortunately, most men don't want someone of her success level. She's having a hard time meeting men, even with a professional women who sets her up on dates. Crosby, meanwhile lives back in SF and plays baseball. He jokes about her coming back with her team so they can hang out more. They have this easiness between them and they miss each other. As friends. But can Nadia really return back home and bring her football team? 3.5 stars just beginning stars. Lots of potential and can't wait to see where these two go.
This is a cute quickie prequel that lays the foundation for The Virgin Rule Book. You definitely see the chemistry between Nadia and Crosby so let's see how it plays out in their full length novel.
Friends-to-lovers is one of my favorite tropes and Lauren Blakely has done a fantastic job setting the stage for The Virgin Rule Book. If it is anything like The Rules of Friends with Benefits, Nadia and Crosby’s story will surely be an entertaining friends-to-lovers romance!
Nadia owns the Vegas Hawks and they just won the Super Bowl. She has worked hard to get to where she is and now that she has time, she’s looking for someone to share her life with and she can’t stop thinking about Crosby, her brother’s best friend and her childhood friend. They have an easy friendship and sparks are definitely present but they are only ever friends. So, she turns to a matchmaker who assures her she’ll find the perfect guy. You know what they say about famous last words.
Nadia goes on first date after first date but none of them lead to a second one. Every thought always comes back to the wonderful connection she has with Crosby. Their banter is gold and they have so much fun together. I rest believed their friendship and I was dying for them to just go for it.
I loved this prequel. As with most friends-to-lovers romances, neither want to risk their friendship but sometimes they just have to take a chance.
Overall, The Rules of Friends with Benefits is a quick, entertaining read and the perfect setup for The Virgin Rule Book. I cannot wait to get more of Nadia and Crosby, I just know these two will bring on the heat, humor, and heart!! I loved it!
I loved this introduction to Nadia and Crosby. It is the perfect teaser to The Virgin Rule Book. It is a super sexy, short and sweet and it is just the beginning!
If you read My Week Husband will have met Nadia as she is Scarlett’s best friend. Nadia is the owner a Vegas NFL Team. Crosby is her brothers best friend and the two have some serious tension and attraction to one another.
I read this free prologue before the first book. While this was cute and great for introducing you to this world, after reading the first book, it's really not necessary to read this beforehand. The first book is really a standalone. This one gives more details but is summed up really well in The Virgin Rule Book.
It's a prequel novella for the first book in a new series Rule of Love by Lauren Blakely. Just an introduction to the main characters it sets the base for The Virgin Rule Book.
I liked the characters so that's why I'm giving it two stars, but this prequel was completely unnecessary. It could've been covered in a page or two. That being said, I hope the actual story is more interesting.
This is an OK prequel novella for the Rules of Love series. It is very short, and basically just introduces Nadia and Crosby, who will be the couple in the first book of that series. Since it is so short, there really isn't much plot -- it truly is an introduction to the series. I do think it was good that I read it, though, since I learned a lot about the couple in the first book.
Since it is just a short prequel novella, and not really a complete book -- it gets 3 stars from me.
I will say that both Nadia and Crosby seemed a little spoiled. Nadia was insanely wealthy, and spent money for entertainment, but couldn't get a date because she intimidated men. Crosby was a baseball star, who could have any woman he wanted just because of his money and looks.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
This book meets my first favorite requirement of friends with benefits. Initially I was worried when I read a baseball player and football team owner were the characters. I thought this was going to be a sports romance, but it’s not about the game or the sport. It’s about friends reconnecting and hoping for more.
Crosby is Eric’s friend. Growing up Nadia hung out with Crosby and her brother. They lived in San Francisco where Crosby became a third baseman for the San Francisco Cougars. After Nadia’s father died she inherited his football team in Las Vegas. They haven’t seen each other for awhile, yet no matter how much time passes they fall back into easy conversation. Nadia has always felt a spark between them, but wasn’t sure he felt the same way. So she kept her feelings to herself. Neither one has tried to cross the line eventhough they flirt. Nadia is focusing on her football team, yet she wants a partner whom she can share her life with. Dating guys has been challenging with her career. Each time she goes on a date her thoughts come back to Crosby and how easy they connect. I noticed that prequel novellas are simply the same as requesting a sample except you get more chapters. In this case the novella has eight chapters. It read like a lengthy prologue setting up the story of two childhood friends who like each other enough to venture into the benefits of friendship. I have to ask myself if I’m invested in Crosby and Nadia’s story. From what I’ve read so far it seems this is a light fun story. However, I’m not in the market for this book quite yet. I’ll keep it in mind for a later read.
Zzzzzzzzz. So. Boring. I. Fell. Asleep. In. Chapter 3. And 5. Then yet again in Chapter 7.
It's probably needless to say, yet I'm going to anyway for full disclosure ~ I skimmed through the remaining pages in roughly twenty minutes. I looked for interesting or exciting parts with no success whatsoever. Shock (not really). Nadia is only twenty-four, but has an unexpectedly unprecedented career that falls strangely into her lap when her father passed away. She's the youngest daughter, and she has an older brother, yet Nadia is the one to whom her father chose to leave his shares and controlling interest of his Las Vegas professional football team to. The title theme involves Nadia and her older brother's best friend, and their sizzling chemistry. Except, WE don't see or feel it when it supposedly occurs, because Nadia's all inside her own head over-analyzing the tingle she tells us about. Over, and over, and yet again, in phone calls to carefully vetted friends, co-workers. So much talking and explaining, but no doing. Boring, boring, boring! Worst book I've ever read by this writer!
This story tells you a little bit about Nadia how she owns a football team and has a crush on her brothers beat friend Crosby he plays Baseball. They are also best friends. This is a cute little into into their lives as she tries to figure out the dating world and realizes that she just wants him but does she cross the line? Does he want her too? He also makes a suggestion or her to move her football team back to San Francisco to be closer to him.. closer to her family.. they joke back and forth and talk a lot.when she tells him her good news that she got the ok to move her team back to San Francisco. He is so happy. The he makes sure that she knows to save dances at her brothers wedding for him. At her brothers wedding he hints that it’s going to be so much more then just dancing. Their story will Continue in The Virgin Rule Book. I can’t wait for it too come out!
The Rules of Friends with Benefits by Lauren Blakely is a prequel novella to the Rules Of Love Series.
Nadia and Crosby have known each other for years, and there’s an element of forbidden romance as Crosby is Nadia brothers best friend. Both live and breath sport - one football and the other baseball, so their friendship has that as a connection point. Plus they both have an attraction to the other, but neither has taken the step to change it.
After numerous failed matchmaker dates, Nadia is ready to give up. But there’s someone she could have the relationship she wants if she just took the plunge and an even big career move.
Nadia and Crosby’s romance is slow burn build up that leads you into wanting to read the first full novel - The Virgin Rule Book.
I was looking for a short book to read and this story was exactly what I wanted.
If you're a fan of romance novels and looking for a steamy read, I highly recommend "The Rules of Friends with Benefits" by Lauren Blakely. This book is the prequel to the "Rules of Love" series and follows the story of a successful businessman and his best friend's sister, who decide to embark on a no-strings-attached relationship. But as they navigate their way through this new territory, they start to develop feelings for each other that go beyond just physical attraction. The story is well-written, with well-developed characters and plenty of sizzling chemistry between the two main characters. It's a perfect book for a weekend read, and I guarantee you won't be able to put it down until you've finished it. Give it a try and let yourself be swept away by the passion and romance of this captivating story! Happy Reading...enjoy!
Maybe, if I gave even the tiniest of fucks about football - American or otherwise - or sport or rich people problems, then The Rules of Friends with Benefits might have been worth reading. I don't.
If I knew that the heroine owned a football team and 80% of this novella would be about that, I would never have read it.
If I knew that her biggest problem would be deciding what dress to wear to an awards gala, I wouldn't have read it.
If I knew that I'd be expected to feel sorry for a woman who can afford to buy a £600 pair of shoes every time she goes on a bad date, I wouldn't have read it.
And if I knew that the title was a misnomer, given the book is barely a prologue, barely an introduction to even a friendship, I definitely wouldn't have read it.
This is a sweet little novella about Nadia and Crosby. We met Nadia in My One Week Husband as one of Scarlett's best friends. Nadia owns a professional football team, but has never really had a serious boyfriend. Her professional football team is currently located in Las Vegas, but that is about to change. Crosby is Nadia's brother's best friend, and is a professional baseball player in San Francisco. These two have always had a close friendship but nothing more. This novella sets us up for The Virgin Rule Book which will be released in April. I'm super excited for it after getting a bit of background about these two upcoming characters! I can't wait LB!
Great prequel to Crosby and Nadia's story. This was included at the end of My One Week Husband audiobook.
I've been crushing on Crosby for a while, and couldn't wait for his and Nadia's story. Having been friends for years, Crosby and Nadia share a lot of themselves. Him being a successful baseball player, and Nadia owning a football team. They meet when they can, usually at family or work functions. While there's definitely some chemistry between them, they both have steered clear of going past mile flirtying. But, we wouldn't be talking about this if Lauren hadn't written them a story. I'm so excited to finally get their HEA.
This short novella is the prequel to The Virgin Rule Book. It sets the stage for Nadia and Crosby’s friendship and the possibility of them becoming more than friends. It is written in first person, and except for the last chapter, is from Nadia’s POV. I love that Nadia is a powerful woman in a man driven world. I love that her dad believed in her and made her dream possible. I love that she is fierce. And I adore the teasing friendship she shares with Crosby. As a prequel, this novella is perfect in setting up the story for the book that follows. Though The Virgin Rule Book can stand alone without the prequel, I really enjoyed having some background.
2.5ish stars. I was getting extremely annoyed that the author kept mentioning couples and their love stories as it made it seem like this was the third or fourth book in a series instead of the begging of the series. And moving a sports team without the media finding out would never happen so that entire storyline just seems extremely unrealistic. I also didn’t like how the chapters weren’t given timelines but instead some said “a little while later”.
I will try giving the next book a chance but I know I won’t be able to read the whole series if I get as annoyed with those books as I did this one.
The Rules of Friends with Benefits is the prequel to The Virgin Rule Book by Lauren Blakely. It begins a year before and you get a glimpse into Crosby and Nadia’s friendship leading up to her brother’s wedding. I read the VRB first so this was fun going back to see how they were before the made the rules of their time together. You can read it before or after but it would flow better if you read it beforehand. I love these two. The baseball player and the Football team owner. They have been friends for years and now is their time to add some benefits...
What a tease! This short novella is the start of the newest series by Lauren Blakely that starts in April! What a way to hook me too! I love a friends-to-lovers trope, throw in sports and I’m a goner!
Nadia and Crosby are childhood friends that have a great relationship. Despite not seeing each other often due to their schedules their friendship is strong. The witty banter between these two is great and the ease of their relationship is so relatable.
Prelude says it all. Back story to catch you up to the actual story. Crosby and Nadia are friends since childhood. Crosby is best friends with Nadia's brother. So this is how they know each other. Giving clip notes here will only spoil this prelude read so I won't. If their story is as good as this teaser, I'm looking forward to their release. Enjoy 🤓
