When tragedy strikes the Bryce Beach Public Library, the choice is clear for librarian Sunshine Baker: solve the mystery or lose her job.
Despite having no prior sleuthing experience, Sunshine feels uniquely qualified due to her ninja YA librarian skills and all those Nancy Drew books she read as a kid. With the help of children’s librarian Molly Simmons and cataloguer Evangeline Dupree, Sunshine and her colleagues scour Bryce Beach for suspects, clues, and the stolen treasure.
Can she and her squad recover the proceeds from the library’s annual fundraising gala and Bryce Beach’s most priceless historical artifact, the Bible with the town’s founding fathers’ signatures?
But here’s the most vexing question of all: could one of Sunshine’s colleagues be a backstabbing traitor out to destroy the library?
K.L. Montgomery writes #bodypositive sweet romance and romcom. A librarian in a former life, she now works as an editor and runs the 5000-member Indie Author Support group on Facebook in addition to publishing under two names.
Though she remains a Hoosier at heart, K.L. shares her coastal Delaware home with some furry creatures and her husband, who is on the furry side as well. She has an undying love for her three sons, Broadway musicals, the beach, Seinfeld, the color teal, IU basketball, paisleys, and dark chocolate.
This was a cute book and maybe deserves a 3 and 1/2 star rating but alas Goodreads doesn’t make this possible. I enjoyed a little light reading and the characters were pretty fun. Some of it was a little cheesy but not unexpected from a cosy. It was still entertaining.
I’ve never read a cozy mystery before, but from what I’ve heard they’re supposed to be this one was executed well. It was a bit cheesy at times but super fun and fast-paced. The main character was relatable and funny and the small town vibe was super fun.
K.L. Montgomery’s Betrayal at the Beach: A Cozy Christian Mystery is the first book in the Dangerous Curves series. It is a YA story of a young amateur sleuth on a quest for answers. I am sure Nancy Drew fans will love this story. In true KL style the message in the story is about body positivity. This cozy mystery is a feel-good fun read.
DNF @ 56% I tried... thought I would try since I got for free on stuff your kindle day. I really wanted to like this, especially because I was on vacation. But man, oh man, I was so bored, and if we are being honest, I dont know what I read in that 56% because I quite literally didn't care.
So good! I LOVED Sunshine, and her friends are FANTASTIC! The plot was amazing, and I knew who it was! It took a little bit, but I knew it! ☺ It's sooo good!
As I read Betrayal at the Beach, I became instantly enthralled. I felt an instant connection to Sunshine Baker and her girlfriends. Life in the beach town was warm and familiar. The cozy mystery maintained my interest, and the characters made me want to see the gang work their magic again. If you are looking to be entertained while curling up with a book, this is the story for you. I've found a new series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Sunshine Baker work in the Bryce Beach Public Library as a YA and she has been working with the Friends of the Library Committee to organise and throw their yearly Gala to raise funds for the library, as well as her role at the library itself and has been enjoying every minute of it and as the night of the gala arrives, she is hoping that everything will go well and that the invitees will enjoy the evening. From the start it looks like everyone is having fun and the catering, magician act and music are keeping everyone entertained, when the food is served and she finds out that she has to make the first speech and introductions, she is terrified, but manages to get through it and the rest of the evening inscathed, that is until after they have counted the donations and are presenting the total to the audience when there is a crashing of glass and a scream where the crowd is shocked into panic. The Founding Fathers Bible, a priceless artifact has been stolen and when Sunshine goes to check on the donations in the locked room, she is devastated to find out that they have been stolen too.
The police are called and statements are made, but when she arrives at work on the Monday morning, the Chief of Police is there to see her and ask her some questions, however, she is surprised to find out that they suspect one of the employees and that they need the information of all who had access to the room that the donations were being kept in, whether they were at the Gala or not. This has Sunshine worrying and this is increased even more when she goes to see the head of the Library and is asked for her opinion and then to look into it in her own time as well. This spurs her onto asking questions of her friends Evangeline and Molly, drawing up a list of attendees and talking through the events of the night again, but all this does is throw suspicion around with no strong leads bar one, so the next day Molly and Sunshine make plans to talk to them, but in a non-threatening way to try and glean some more information from them about that night. As these conversations take place, more tidbits and accusations are thrown around which are making Sunshine feel even more uncomfortable as they are mostly pointing towards one of her friends and another colleague as the police appear to be less than interested.
As the stakes are raised and jobs are on the line, will Sunshine and her amateur sleuthing skills solve the mystery before jobs and a priceless artefact are lost forever? This is a cozy mystery which will keep you guessing through to the end as the hunt for answers throws light upon a small community with secrets and stories to tell.
I thoroughly enjoyed this enjoyable and engaging cozy mystery which is the first book in a new series about YA librarian and amateur sleuth Sunshine Baker, and is set in the fictional small town of Bryce Beach. Sunshine who is a curvy redheaded librarian who despite her surname can’t bake works at the Bryce Beach Public Library and she jumps into action when there is a mystery to solve. When the proceeds from the library’s annual fundraising gala and Bryce Beach’s Bible, a priceless historical artefact which contains the town’s founding fathers’ signatures goes missing, Nancy Drew fan Sunshine despite no sleuthing experience is keen to discover the culprit. However she soon starts to wonder if it’s one of her own colleagues who is out to destroy the library. I love Sunshine and her catchphrase of “Jesus, take the wheel!”, she makes a great main character who really does bring the whole story together. Her colleagues, children’s librarian Molly Simmons and cataloguer Evangeline Dupree both bring different elements to the story and I loved the relationships and dialogue between the fellow librarians. The descriptive narrative really bought both the characters and the setting to life and I felt immersed in the story as though I was on the adventure alongside Sunshine. The plot twists kept me guessing until the end and I was gripped by the storyline and found I could not put this book down. ‘Betrayal at the Beach’ is the first book in the new ‘Dangerous Curves’ cozy Christian mystery series, and this is a great introduction to Sunshine and Bryce Beach. I look forward to reading the future books in this series and being back in the Bryce Beach Public Library with Sunshine and her colleagues.
Betrayal at the Beach is the first book in the Dangerous Curves series by K.L Montgomery. This is something a little different to what Ms. Montgomery has done in the past- as this is a cozy Christian mystery, so I wasn’t sure of what to expect, but knew anything she wrote was going to be good- and of course, it was. I loved the setting, Bryce Beach, a small town beach community- as well as all the quirky and interesting inhabitants of the town. It was the perfect setting and cast for a cozy mystery, so I was hooked right from the start. Sunshine Baker is one of the local librarians who has worked incredibly hard on the annual fundraising gala hoping to raise enough funds to keep the library running. As the night arrives, Sunshine hopes everything will run smoothly as there is a lot riding on the night’s success. Just when Sunshine begins to think the night couldn’t have been better, a robbery brings the festivities to a screeching halt. Not only has the thief taken the large amount of donations, but also a priceless antique that is steeped in historical significance for all the township. It is now up to Sunny, and her friends, to get to the bottom of it all, to find the thief and return the funds and heirloom, before it’s too late. This was such a fun little adventure and a fantastic start to a wonderful new series. I can’t wait for book #2.
Sunshine Baker is the young adult librarian at Bryce Beach Public Library. This year she is planning the Friends of the Library Gala. The gala is how the library gets its donations for the year. The gala is a huge success until something terrible happens.
During the announcement of the funds raised for the library, the library is robbed. The most famous book in the library, the Family Bible of the Bryce’s is stolen from its case. Upon further investigation, all the donations have also been taken.
Sunshine is asked by the chief of police and her boss to look into the people in the library. Sunshine is very uncomfortable looking into her colleagues knowing that each one would benefit from the donations to the library and some might even lose their jobs without those donations.
Sunshine begins her investigation and automatically goes into “Nancy Drew” mode as she calls it. With the help of her friend, Molly, Sunshine uncovers piece by piece of the puzzle. The actual culprit is a huge surprise to all involved.
This cozy mystery is a quick read. The body-positive messages are great for anyone who struggles with feeling good about who they are. I really enjoyed the story and the way the mystery unfolds leading to dead ends and then the finale.
I was super excited to read this book because I had heard so many good things about it from my reader friends. I have read a couple of books by this author previously so I was pretty sure I knew I would like it. Turns out, I didn’t just like it. I LOVED IT! The author did a wonderful job writing for “plus-sized” women that don’t normally get this joy. I think it adds to a positive image for the readers and makes them feel confident and comfortable in their skin. Which is the way that life should be for women. This book also contains some religious undertones which I have never known her to do before but think that they are perfect, and I hope that she continues to use them. The world needs more of that in my opinion. I fell in love with the main character and really want to be her in another life. The writer did such an amazing job describing her and everything little detail around her and her world. This is a mystery as well, but without all the typical gore and brutality. I loved the ending and absolutely cannot wait to read the next installment when she puts it out. This is a very quick read and once you start you won’t want to put it down. I highly recommend you read this book for yourself. And then recommend it to all your girlfriends to read as well.
KL Montgomery is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to inclusive and sweet romance reads. When I saw that her newest series had a curvy redheaded librarian at the helm of a cozy mystery I knew I had to get my hands on it and as soon as it dropped. I was so excited that I opened this book in the evening the moment the kiddos went to bed and I actually had it wrapped up and finished later that night. It was SO SO good I just could not put this down. I’m talking my kindle came with me to the bathroom, that good! Not sorry either lol. Sunshine is just about everything I wanted to be in a past life I think. I always have wanted to be a librarian a bit and this made me feel as if I was living vicariously with the vivid descriptions and chapters that made me feel as if I was right there with the characters experiencing everything as it happened in Bryce Beach. I am so thrilled to come back to this series in the near future again and again. The best part is this is a series I feel will be perfect to share with my growing and blossoming teen and pre-teen daughters. I think they will love this one and it has some underlying lessons that can be learned for them that will be well worth the investment of the time. This is one series you do not want to miss!
Betrayal at the Beach (Dangerous Curves Book1) by K.L Montgomery is a fun, entertaining cozy mystery. Sunshine Baker is the Young Adult librarian in her hometown of Bryce Beach. Sunshine is tasked with planning the annual Friends of the Library Gala this year. The Gala is very important to the library because funds have been cut and the Library needs all the help it can get from this fundraiser. Of all the possible things Sunshine had worried about happening at the Gala, theft of the money raised and of the 400 year old bible that was brought over by the town’s founding members at the Gala wasn’t one of them. When Sunshine finds out that the police think one of the library employees planned the theft, she vows to find the culprit!
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I love that Sunshine and her librarian friends are women with curves. We all come in different shapes and sizes and this book shows that everyone is important.
Betrayal at the Beach (Dangerous Curves Book 1) by K.L. Montgomery
5 +++++ Stars
The Cozy Mystery genre has quickly become one of my favorites recently and when I saw that one of my favorite authors ever had one coming out I absolutely had to have it. Then I realize it's going to be a series!! Win, Win!!
I had really high hopes for this book and in Classic KL Montgomery fashion those were met and included more. I loved this book...I felt like Sunshine’s right hand man on this one, I suspected everyone and couldn't put the story down until I knew how it ended. Then I was left with yet another mystery I see coming in the future. I loved Mom and Dad, they made me smile, and I'm left with a lot of curiosity about Chief James. I can not wait for the next book to be available, and I love the covers on these books, they seem so inviting, and they will look so nice on my bookshelf!
I will absolutely read anything this author comes out with, she has written 2 of my favorites of all time and I can't recommend her and her books enough.
Betrayal at the Beach (Dangerous Curves Book 1) by K.L. Montgomery. I love K.L. Montgomery and her body positive books so it was no surprise when I fell in love with this book. I read it entirely in one sitting. Its the story of Sunshine Baker who is the Young Adult Head Librarian and is a plus size girl. She and her friends at the library are in a pickle because Sunshine is planning the Friends of the Library gala and its a huge success until someone steals all the proceeds she raised from it. That is how the library is able to stay open so Sunshine is determined to figure out who took the money and get it back. Sunshine thinks since she's read a few Nancy Drew books in her time she can figure it out in no time. Sunshine along with her friend Molly begin to find clues and the culprit will leave them shocked! This cozy mystery is so fun and such a good clean Christian read. Do yourself a favor and read it today!
Betrayal at the Beach: A Cozy Christian Mystery (Dangerous Curves Book 1) by K.L. Montgomery was a book full of mystery and suspense. It is a great cozy read.
When tragedy hits the Bryce Beach Public Library, librarian Sunshine Baker must choose between solving the mystery and losing her job. Sunshine feels unusually equipped despite having no prior detective experience, thanks to her ninja YA librarian talents and all those Nancy Drew books she read as a youngster. Sunshine and her colleagues explore Bryce Beach for suspects, clues, and the stolen riches with the assistance of children's librarian Molly Simmons and cataloguer Evangeline Dupree. Can Sarah and her team reclaim the funds raised at the library's annual fundraising gala, as well as Bryce Beach's most valuable historical item, the Bible with the signatures of the town's founding fathers?
I loved every page of it. I can’t wait to read the rest of the other books in this series.
Betrayal at the Beach was a great cozy mystery story. You can’t help but be drawn to Sunshine Baker and her amateur sleuth skills. This was just the type of book that you would want to read on a cold and snowy afternoon in a blanket with a nice warm cup of hot chocolate, like I did.
I felt that Sunshine was a very strong character whose quirkiness came through beautifully. This was a lighthearted read and the perfect way to start a new year. The secondary characters all enhanced the story and I’m hoping that as a series goes on will get to know them even more in depth.
It had just the right amount of mystery you would expect for a true cozy book. It was a very quick read that kept you engaged from page one to the last page. I very much enjoyed this authors writing style with just the right amount of humor.
If you enjoy quick reads, and true cozy mysteries, then you will want to pick this book up and give this series a try.
Betrayal At The Beach: A Cozy Christian Mystery is the first book in the Dangerous Curves series by K.L. Montgomery.
The main character is called Sunshine, and she definitely lives up to her name. She is in her forties, quirky, and very relatable. To be honest, I thought the whole cast of characters was amazing and helped to make this book so enjoyable. Despite having no professional skills to do so, librarian Sunshine rallies the troops when she discovers that the library's funds have been stolen along with a Bible that has a historical worth as well as a spiritual one. The story is filled with twists and turns as Sunshine and her friends get closer to solving this mystery. I found this story very enjoyable and the author’s storytelling skills had me turning the pages late into the night.
I really like this author and I was really looking forward to this story and as usual I wasn’t disappointed. It was such a lovely book to read, the story flowed really well and I loved the characters. Sunshine really was a joy to read about, she certainly lived up to her name! I loved the mystery of the storyline and it definitely kept my interest throughout. One of the many things I love about this author is how she makes her characters so body positive, it really makes her characters so relatable – I just adore the way in which she writes. I loved this book; it is definitely one of my favourites from this author and as always, I can’t wait for her next book release! Betrayal at the Beach is a must read and I highly recommend it!
5 Stars Betrayal at the Beach (Dangerous Curves Book 1) by K.L. Montgomery
I absolutely loved this book. Betrayal at the Beach is the first book in the Dangerous Curves Series by KL Montgomery. This is a Cozy Mystery that once you start reading you won’t want to stop until you’ve finished. I’m a big fan of this author and never hesitate picking up a book from her , her style of writing and attention to detail simply blows me away every time. This is a story about Sunshine, she works at the library and finds herself managing and planning a fundraiser. What she didn’t know is that it would lead her to having to solve a crime to save the library. Sunshine along with help from her friend Molly search for clues for the missing Founder’s Bible and the stolen money . Find out what happens next in this absolute must read. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
What an utterly fun read for a lazy afternoon! This little mystery has great characters, a well-timed plot, and an engaging mystery for readers to solve along with Sunny Baker. As noted, it does have a "grown-up Nancy Drew" feel to it, and made for a captivating story. The heroine, a 42-year-old librarian in a small beach town was relatable and fun, an ardent supporter of reading and comfortable in her own skin. I liked that she had a bit of sass and jumped into rescuing her library despite some fears she had. While this is called a Christian mystery, you certainly don't need to be Christian in order to enjoy it. Sunny is a woman with faith, but the book doesn't centre around this - it's just an aspect of her personality. If you are looking for a fun cozy book to curl up with today, this might be the one!
Sunshine Baker is in charge of organizing the Friends of Bryce Beach Public Library Annual Gala held to raise funds, the only way to keep the doors to the library open all year, increase the book collections, and pay for current staffing levels. But at the end of the evening, the priceless Founders’ Bible and the money raised for funding the library were stolen! Can Sunshine find the thief? Will they recover the Founders’ Bible and the money? Or will the library have to close its doors?
Relying heavily on her “Nancy Drew” detective books read during her childhood, along with help from children’s librarian Molly Simmons and cataloguer Evangeline Dupree, Sunshine is off and running to see that justice is served and the library fully funded!
Betrayal at the Beach: A Cozy Christian Mystery by K.L. Montgomery is the first in the Dangerous Curves Book series. I was excited to pick up another book by this author because I have enjoyed her other books. This was no exception. We are taken to Bryce Beach and get to follow Sunshine as she uncovers what happened to the missing Library Gala fundraising money. Sunshine is a perfect name for this character because she just exudes happiness. I love her background of sleuthing knowledge and her devotion not only to the library but to her town. This is a great start to a fun, easy reading series. This was the perfect curl up with a cup of tea and read type of book. I look forward to more adventures in this new series.
Betrayal at the Beach: A Cozy Christian Mystery by K.L. Montgomery is the first book in the Dangerous Curves series. This is a fantastic book that is so entertaining from start to finish. It is a little different from what this author has written previously but it has been done so well that you would never realise. The characters are all so interesting and all have the perfect role within the story. I also loved the fact that Sunshine actually felt like a normal person - it was so easy to imagine her and relate to her as though she is someone you would see on the street everyday. I always enjoy books written by this author and this one is definitely no exception. It is entertaining from start to finish and a great start to a new series. I am already looking forward to book 2!
OH MY GOODNESS!!! This was a great read!! I am huge on watching mystery shows and still missed the clues on whodunit. Sunshine is distraught that the town’s most prized treasure; the town’s Bible with the founding father’s signatures in it, and the proceeds of the gala she had orchestrated to help the library stay open are stolen. Only the town’s elite people, members of the library foundation, and the library employees are at the gala where they were stolen from. Who would have done such a thing? Will the police listen to her views and ideas? The main characters in this book just jump off the page. I would be friends with them. I love that the book ends with an extra mystery, I am very encouraged to read the next book, so maybe I can solve the case.
Betrayal at the Beach by K.L. Montgomery a thrill of a five-star read. This has it all, a great story, librarians, and a mystery thrown in for good measure. I adore this author and all of the hats they wear; I enjoy how each story has its own details, there isn’t a scene that doesn’t fit, just because it may be what they are known for, it adds more power to each story. I started this one after being on a massive reading binge and was expecting that my great reading would start to slow, but this just added more excitement to my reading, it kept me guessing and just added to my love of reading overall. I am always excited to see a librarian as a character in a story and this gave me joy in spades.
Finally! A book I can share and discuss with my preteen daughter! I’ll admit, I’ma sucker for romance, hot and steamy romance which doesn’t make for mummy-daughter book club. So this was something different for me and I have to say, once I was a few chapters in I couldn’t put this book down. I felt completely drawn into Sunshine’s world, the writing really helps you care about the things important to her. This book was expertly created and wonderfully gentle to read, but still with a gripping plot. I’m so pleased to have found out this is book one in a new series, I can’t wait to find out what Sunshine gets herself into next.
As a long time fan of this author, I’ll admit I was a little hesitant when I heard she’d written the first of a planned cozy mystery series. However, it is as charming as her romances, and set at the Delaware seashore like they are. Sunshine is the main character: a 40-something librarian with a penchant for mysteries who finds herself solving one in her own backyard (aka her small town library). She is a cute character with fun; slightly quirky sidekicks and I look forward to reading more of their adventures as the series progresses. The author has definitely found a new niche in writing with this one! If you are a fan of cozy, lighthearted mysteries then this series will delight you.
I enjoyed this mystery story. This is an author I never hesitate to pick up. Her books are well written and her attention to details make the stories feel realistic. This book is no different. I enjoyed being pulled into the story from the start by the characters Sunshine which I love this name. She is a great character that brought the story to life as she tries to solve the mystery and keep doing what she loves. This is a story that is full of mystery, treasure hunt and suspects that will leave you guessing. This is truly a great mystery story that I read in one afternoon. I highly recommend this book and this author.
Betrayal at the Beach: A Cozy Christian Mystery (Dangerous Curves Book 1) by K.L. Montgomery
4-stars
This book was an absolute joy to read! Though this isn’t my normal go to genre I thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish. It was sweet, detailed, interesting, and captivating, I was kept on my toes the whole way through and I loved that.
The author wrote with so much detail that it was easy to picture everything playing out in my mind, which kept me entertained the whole time. I look forward to reading book 2 of the series ASAP.
If you are looking for a light fun Christian read look no further, this is the book for you!
